One of the more unsettling Teams notifications I've received from a manager

I asked a question and she said "I have to run, I'll be back in a few minutes and I'll get back to you." This was the next message...two hours later.

She's still going on about this bath.

    "so refreshing"

Auditors - Financial Chefs with no ingredients or cookbooks

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 04:47 PM PDT

You get no ingredients or cookbooks. You're lured into the culture because it looks organised from the outside. The branding is professional, the office looks neat and clean. It's quiet and far from chaotic on the outside.

"We just want you to prepare the audit" - sounds simple enough, there'll be guidance when you start off, it'll be laid out so you accept the job only to realize that you're initiating the process from scratch with no proper guidance when the client has already been given the fucking menu and a time to show up for dinner. No prepwork is done, no one checks or really cares if it's likely you'll get all the ingredients on time or if you'll have enough staff helping you achieve the prepare the meal.

Partners and management need to stop attending all the CPA bullshit conferences on audit standards and enroll in logistics management because I have no idea how they arrive at these deadlines. There's all this talk about ethics in accounting but what's more unethical than making false promises and then trying to mobilize hastily acquired resources to sell a flimsy audit opinion.

If you got hired as a chef and you were responsible for the sourcing and preparing of meals with no proper instructions on how to prepare them but an unwavering expectation that you do it all on time, you'd quit without second thought. Just because this is an "office culture" doesn't make it any less abusive, unethical and toxic.

Proposed Changes to the CPA Exam

Current U.S. accounting student wondering if I made the right choice...

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 07:40 PM PDT

TLDR: I don't have lofty career goals, just want to be financially comfortable and not stressed. Am I not cut out for this industry?

I am about to start my Senior year in my accounting program and I've been feeling very unprepared for my career. I came to this sub to get some clarity and all the posts have been both helpful and overwhelming. I'm hoping some of you may have some sound advice for me.

I didn't choose accounting to work the corporate ladder and make a lot of money. I liked that the skills I learned for my career would also benefit my personal life (in the way of taxes and overall finances). My ideal career would be working in the nonprofit sector or freelance - a work-life balance (emphasis on the life) is more important to me than making money. I just want to be financially comfortable.

I'm starting to think that I'm not cut out for this industry. Recruiters and mentors that visit my university make it sound like being a CPA is a must, that I need to start networking like yesterday, and working for a B4 is the only way to go.

I enjoy my classes somewhat, but I don't love them. Academically I'm doing fine. Am I wasting time with this degree if I am only wanting to be a casual accountant?

What is the difference between equalization and rebalancing for private equity funds?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 07:26 PM PDT

Equalization = for past drawdowns, in proportion to the new commitment %s after the subsequent close.

Rebalancing = for inception to date PnL, in proportion to the new commitment %s after the subsequent close.

    Does this sum it up?

I'm just struggling to imagine why these two would even be separate concepts. If you perform rebalancing without equalization, then you would just be diluting the older investors with no adequate compensation, correct? Why would anybody agree to that?

    Happy to be corrected!

Kobe, Lance, Tiger, MJ, & Brady: Is Accounting For Extremely Competitive People?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 08:29 PM PDT

So I have always admired these guys because of their competitive spirit and work ethic. In the accounting world, are any of you competitive personalities? I am just wondering if I will feel constrained because I am. I mean, is it sitting at desk looking at screen literally all day? I dont know if my high energy will fit but I would like to. I love the CPA challenge but not sure after that. Finance seems to get the rep for being competitive personality type. Not interested in sales as I just hate pressuring people.

    Cost Accounting for individual Clients

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 10:32 PM PDT

What method are you familiar with to get business insights and to a granular level on each client, staff bill rates, and hours spent? Boss wants a dashboard analyzing profitability, and wants to be able to drill down into either clients or staff, so looks like I'd need to be approaching this from a cost accounting/managerial accounting perspective. Not sure how to make this easier on myself or what anyone would recommend. Trying my hand to learn Power Query in Excel incase it helps.

    Thank you!!
