    Dobby is a free elf.

UPS just picked up my laptop and work phone. I am no longer in public accounting!

While my stress level has dropped, there was one team I worked with that I'll miss. They were good people and made a good team that sincerely cared about each other as well as the work.

    Other teams weren't as good.

I'm glad for my decision, but it does feel odd to have let go of a job I poured so much time and energy too.

Now that I'm less consumed by my job, anyone know of these things called hobbies or how to start one?

    Is this a deal breaker?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:56 PM PDT

I've been seeing a girl for years now. We have great chemistry, she's beautiful, loves my family, and I thought I wanted to marry her (have been looking at rings). The problem I have (and what is now crowding our once-picturesque future) is the devastating realization I came to last night. We were talking about accounting methods and their respective merits, and she told me that she prefers the specific goods LIFO approach over the vastly superior dollar value LIFO method.

I was shocked. I felt betrayed. I just took her back to her apartment and haven't had the nerve to say anything to her today. This just really shatters the future I thought we had.

How can I trust her judgment? How can I raise children with someone who cannot see that the dollar value method is much more effective in avoiding LIFO liquidation and, thus, far superior to the specific goods approach? I am lost and heartbroken.

I figured I would turn to you, Reddit's premier Accounting sub-Reddit, to give me advice. Should I cut this off? And how should I go about it? Would it be best to do it via our monthly workbook exchanges? (For example, I code a cell to output the data "we are through"). I know this was a lot, and I thank you in advance.

Since I know I won't be at the firm next year, I've basically checked out of the establishing/maintaining relationships with clients thing, and it is so freeing.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:57 AM PDT

I work at a tiny firm that only audits local non-profits, so we're supposed to really get involved and build relationships with the clients. The supervisors in my office are public accounting lifers and seem to really love that part of the job, catching up each year with their clients, but I just honestly could not care less.

I started in public with the sole purpose of getting a CPA to sign off on my experience, then move on. I swear I'm not a psychopath lol but I am an introvert and trying to be fake peppy and outgoing with clients is so uncomfortable. Public is obviously not my calling and I'm planning to leave after the coming fall busy season (most clients are June 30 yearends), so just knowing that I won't have to follow-up with the same clients come next summer has really helped to change my mindset toward the grind.

Just wanted to share, for any other fellow introverts who die inside every time you talk to a client. Once the end is in sight, faking it gets a little bit easier.

Is an accounting degree with no CPA somewhat useless?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:50 PM PDT

First, I got a bachelors degree in accounting. Could not get a job to save my life! Worked as a bank teller. then went to grad school. (this was all pre pandemic, when the unemployment was sub 4% btw)

2 years later, I graduated with a masters in accounting and I still can't find a job. I only got 2 interviews. I got my resume looked over by my college's HR department, an accounting manager and senior from my last accounting internship (both approved, with additional comments. No job was offered from the internship btw) , and my older brother and sister(who is a doctor who applied to lots of residencies/jobs herself.) They all made their own adjustments and added to the resume.

I don't want to do the CPA exam now because I am wornout/tired/depressed at the moment.

Is this degree useless with no CPA and little work experience (besides the internship) ? Thoughts?

Has anyone successfully convinced their firm to allow them to work fully remote?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Currently going into my 3rd year in public and I am pretty content with my teams and compensation, but the biggest thing pulling me to leave is that there is a different city(that my firm doesn't have an office in, 2.5 hours away from the closest one) that I want to move to for various personal reasons. I am thinking about making the ask to be fully remote and ultimately if they don't allow it, then I will leave. I am a high performer based on ratings the last 2 years and it has become pretty clear in my LoS and market that they are quite desperate for bodies right now. Would I have a chance? I am open to occasional travel when needed for a week here and there if it is on the firm's dime.

What is the best industry job title to aim for after leaving senior level at Big Four?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:43 AM PDT

I'm guessing senior accountant is on the lower end of job we should look for.

So should we focusing on either assistant controller, accounting manager, revenue accountant, technical accountant or FA&P? What's the best in terms of pay and future growth?

I know some might want to aim high at controller position but I feel like that would be tough without actual industry experience.

    IRS 2021 Compensation Thread

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:27 PM PDT

Alright bois, it's that time of year.

    1. Role
    2. Salary increase
    3. Bonus
    4. Utilization

    I'll start us off:

    1. SM2 > Partner
    2. 59k > 59.1k (I live in a super HCOL area)
    3. 1% of my tax examination audits, so I got $20k
    4. 10%

What can be done to catapult your accounting career beyond the CPA and master's degree?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Like the title says, just wondering what else can be done, if anything? It seems like the obvious things of CPA, master's and experience, but is there anything else? I would like to pursue a JD in the future, but not sure if that's possible given the hours in public accounting. Also, not sure if it would make much of a difference. Just wondering if you guys have suggestions on things that can be done to take it to the next level. Thanks.

Would a retail theft conviction keep me from getting an accounting job/my cpa?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:09 AM PDT

In 2015 I was struggling with an addiction to drugs and got arrested for retail theft in Florida. It was a misdemeanor and I kept failing drug tests so when they offered me to accept a plea of adjudicated guilty and said I'd just have to pay a fine I accepted.

Well, I've been clean for a while now and I was offered a really good accounts payable position and I'm in school for accounting. I'm hopeful they won't rescind the offer and I'm also hopeful I can still one day become a CPA. I just moved to Philadelphia yesterday and got extended the offer today. It is a dream job for me making and I'd be making 50k a year. Will the offer likely be rescinded based on this?

I've been working so hard and completely changed my life around. I have no other convictions on my record. Does anyone have any experience with this?

A Canadian CPA with only public practice experience looking to move into industry in the USA...any guidance?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:32 AM PDT

    1. I don't currently plan on getting my US CPA. Is this something necessary if I want to work for a Fortune 500

    2. I have 3 years of experience mostly in Canadian Tax/Review files/some IFRS audits. What sort of positions should I be looking for?
