Leaving public before senior in this job market is not a bad idea, public accounting warning for grads

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:07 AM PDT

Just got my offer letter for 20% more not including bonus with a solid 40-45 hour work week after 1.5 years in public accounting.

Just wanted to say leaving before making senior in the right job market (this one) is not a bad idea whatsoever. I'm getting a pay bump, less hours, cooler people to work with, and I'm even up for promotion to the equivalent of senior this fiscal year for my new company.

Public accounting made me depressed and completely unhappy these past near two years. The industry as a whole just sets those at the bottom of the pyramid scheme up for failure and misery.

College grads listen up, this is why public stinks:

You are put on an engagement and have specific amount of billable hours you must meet (let's say 55 per week) and then the work takes you 65. You do all of this work and eat that 10 hour difference and then the manager complains that it's taking too long and "we need to be under budget on this client." HOWEVER the partners just care about how many billable hours you can work so they just want you to work as long as possible. So kids, you are stuck between a manger that doesn't want you to work long hours but get the work done correctly and quickly, and then a partner that complains you aren't billing enough. You can't make everyone happy.

Now you might say "well I'm a high performer and I get my work done correctly and quickly under budget! No problems! Right?" WRONG. You, my precious little partner track employee, will just get even more work so you can bill more. Congratulations! You are a high performing employee and here is your reward! A 5% difference in raise (after taxes equivalent to about 3k compared to Johnny next door who is average and gets to go to sleep 3 hours before you do everyday. Is that 3 hours 5-6 days a week worth that 3k in pay? You decide. Either way they work you to death and then make taking time off the biggest hassle in the world. Personally in my office we couldn't take off busy season (as usual, nbd) but then they would add blackout periods half of summer and other times so in reality you can only take off about 5 months out of the year. That's fun!

I live with other big 4 consultants and believe me kids, we in audit work WAY harder than they do for less money. It's a joke. Public accounting isn't the right path to go to out of school. They prey on the desperate and dumb college grads and convince them that it's there way or they are worthless. For all of my friends at big state schools, don't you ever wonder why half of your professors are ex-big 4 managers? It's because they realized public accounting works people to death and they needed to get out so they chose academia which has decent pay and good life balance. Their sole job is to convince you to go back to big 4 and public accounting because those same firms literally sponsor half of the accountancy programs in colleges in the nation. If you do want to go to big 4 go for consulting because in my personal experience (YMMV of course) their lives are soooo much easier and they are paid more.

PLEASE look at good corporate finance jobs out of college for accounting grads. It will be much better hours, you will most likely be paid more, and you won't have to deal with the absolute bs that goes on in there.

    Good luck and Godspeed

Folks in industry, what are some things auditors do that drive you nuts?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 07:08 AM PDT

We always hear about auditors lamenting on obnoxious behavior from clients (sending TB in pdf, hardcodes in excel files, being dumb, etc.) so I was wondering if we could flip it around.

It's ridiculous how many times I've seen 100% turnover on the audit from the prior year. Yeah some turnover is expected in B4, but MAN it would be nice to just have ONE PERSON, whether it is a manager or staff, be on the job year over year.

Also, don't confuse me with another client when making small talk. I don't care about cricket smh

Where do accountants buy all of their clothes?

PSA: If you're considering a new job or want better pay, NOW is the time to look! It's a job-seeker's market and we have the upper hand!!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 10:22 AM PDT

PSA for anyone considering looking for a new job, whether it be for more work-life balance or pay or etc. Go apply for that job you're not quite qualified for! Chase your dreams of fully remote! Shoot for the salary you deserve! So many companies are on a hiring spree and quality employees are becoming scarce.

    Put yourself out there!!

I took a leap and applied for a job I never thought I'd have a chance at, to my surprise I got an offer. I'll be starting the new job in 2 weeks and it's everything I dreamed for my career, never thought I'd make it here at 25. I was shocked at the sheer amount of opportunities and high demand for accountants, it was NOT like this 2 years ago and you'd have been hard pressed to find remote work. For many, including myself, remote work is a dream and adds so much flexibility.

Current job: plant controller with 3.5y experience making 74k, 3 wks vacation, in office every day, 2h daily commute New job: software company controller, 110k + bonus, unlimited vacation, fully remote

Am I a horrible person? I'm leaving a job in less than a month for a 33% pay increase elsewhere.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:45 PM PDT

I started a job in Public less than a month ago after spending a few years in industry for $75K and just got offered a job at a specialty east coast tax consulting firm that 100% work from home for $100K. Am I a horrible person for quitting a job in public less than a month after starting?

High achiever wondering why they were so high achieving. Is my life a mistake?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:06 PM PDT

Just wanted to see if people out there also relate to this feeling or help me understand what is going on within me

I always thought I was ambitious and driven, and envisioned success for myself in the accounting industry - aka partner at firm yadda yadda. I was head girl at high school, participated in a lot of leadership extracurriculars and was at the top of my cohort in terms of grades and teachers recommendations. I'm currently a first-year university student and I got hired through the young starters program at a big 4 firm. Getting this job was extremely competitive, but I worked hard because I thought - yh, I wanna make my parents proud, yh I wanna be a corporate top dog one day, yh getting into big 4 will really set me up.

but now I'm having an existential crisis just three months into the job, and seven months into uni that I want to pursue 'happiness' and 'peace' (there are better words for this, I'm basically chasing a feeling) and not chase the security behind daily grinding in a well-paying office job just because the world says its the order.

I'm considering dropping out of uni to pursue comic book writing, despite having the artistic skill of a six-year-old. I'm constantly thinking about "finding myself", "running away from home to live in a share house with people I don't know" "working in a bar on a shift schedule so I can concentrate on different things without thinking about uni grades or deadlines or ....''

Bear in mind I'm part of the minority race and come from a low socio-economic background. I understand the benefits of a stable job that gives amazing support. I'm just not happy with the person I have spent my whole youth trying to be.

    TLDR - Am I depressed?

    Intermediate Excel classes

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:17 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm starting a new job as a financial analyst and I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know how to use excels advanced features (I.e pivot table, vlookup, etc)

Is there any website that will teach me how to do all these functions for free? Other than Excel.

After a month or two of searching I am officially done with public accounting tax

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:33 AM PDT

Thank you anyone who has posted similar stories or answered my previous questions. Leaving PA and going from tax to an industry (non tax role) was a little bit of a challenge - but not Impossible.

After applying at many places I ended up having multiple offers. This market is hot and now is the time to make the jump if you are on the fence about it.

I realized the past couple of years that in PA things won't ever "get better".. as you become more efficient or learn processes you are rewarded with more work and the cycle is endless.

After 6 years in public tax I will now be enjoying better hours and my personal life back. The best part is I didn't have to take a pay cut to make the move.

Good luck to anyone else who is in a similar situation!

Industry vs Public hours: Is day to day industry way easier?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:16 AM PDT

I'll preface this with that I know I'll get a million "industry just depends on company" but big picture, do industry workers work a lot less within the same time frame?

For example, I'm a senior in public. We have minimums of 40-60 billable hours most of the year. 40-60 billable means actually like 55-70 hours of worktime as I'm sure many of you know, even if you don't eat hours (especially as a senior I've found, some of the nonsense I do just isn't billable and yet I still need to hit minimums)

I would like to think that if an industry position says hey we work 40-45 hours a week, this includes all the nonsense you usually hear from industry folks about playing on reddit 7 hours a day even though you need "40-45". Is this how it usually works in most of your experiences in industry everyone?

    PWC Hirevue interview

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:50 PM PDT

How long does it take usually to hear back after the Hirevue interview was completed?

I did the virtual interview but feel like I completely bombed the first question. My anxiety flared up and I panicked. I didn't end up answering the question initially, but at the end of the interview there was a portion of time left where I attempted to answer the first question. I feel like I nailed the other 5/6 questions in the interview but I whispered the F word during the first question as my social anxiety kicked in.

    Am I royally effed?

When do I tell my career advisor that I'm not sticking around.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 04:05 PM PDT

I work for top five firm and was promoted last week. On the contrary to the majority of this subreddit, I don't hate the people at my office, I actually enjoy them. The higher up are respectful and I feel that I am more than a body to these people. I also have a really solid, honest relationship with my career advisor and she's excited for me and wants to see me grow.

Bad news tho, I can't do tax PA anymore - it is killing my soul. I have been putting in applications left and right and feel that I am going to hit with a company sooner or later. I don't see a future at my current firm. Managers and partners are trying to elevate my position with more client interactions and new roles within the firm. I know I don't have anything set up at this moment, but I don't want to get involved in these roles when I am planning to dip.

So question, do I continue as normal until I get an offer and let my advisor know or should I give the heads up now? Anyone been in this position before?

Also this is my first ever reddit post so sorry if I did anything wrong.

As an accounting professor, I've spent many hours in webinars this summer learning about the new CPA exams launching in 2024. 3 exams in the Core and the 4th exam is a specialty. Only one specialty exam can be taken. If you had this option, which specialty would you choose?
