Those of you who have been in business for many years... how good is your poker face?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:15 PM PDT

Had to give a customer his "big" $1500 bill... as his face shows signs of agony.

Meanwhile he's driving his brand new truck, talking about buying a new "side by side" ATV (20k plus?), and purchasing a new "toy hauler" camper (50k plus?)

I'm surprised they can't feel the annoyance in my blank expression.

Advice on reaching potential customers for consulting business.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:16 AM PDT

I am really trying to get started into a sales consulting business on my own. I don't want to throw money into paying for a website, hosting, and other expenses without making sure I can get some clients first. I have been offering sales consulting services to three businesses completely free of charge in return for allowing me to use them in my portfolio. I can't get one single bite. Where other than Facebook or LinkedIn or what else can I do to get the ball rolling?

Feeling discouraged. What can I change?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:13 AM PDT

My pandemic boredom prompted me to try to turn my hobby into a business. I'm about 7 months into this adventure and I'm due for a change. I have a small craft business. I'm a one woman show. I make all my items (wreaths, hair accessories, bookmarks, and ornaments around Christmas), post to social media (I struggle with this), and I have recently started going out to local craft fairs. I like the craft fairs, but I haven't been getting the kind of sales that make me feel like business is going well. Time and money are limited resources right now.

What can I do to reach more potential customers? Should I stick with the craft fairs to build my name locally? Any other advice?

Cheapest Shipping for >1 oz item?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:41 PM PDT

I was sending out an earring order in a bubble mailer via USPS and they charged me $4 for shipping!! This is too much for an item that costs $10 and weighs around 1 oz. I haven't built up my smal business enough to invest in printers, etc. but I anticipate that i'll have to make a few more trips to USPS to send out earring orders. How can I bring down shipping costs? Thanks!

What is Micro-Marketing? Types, Benefits, and Things You Need To Know

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 03:25 AM PDT

Micromarketing is a type of advertising that focuses on specific groups of people in a niche market. Micromarketing is a method of promoting items or services to a specific set of clients.

To deploy micro-marketing methods, a company must first define its target audience based on a certain characteristic, such as gender, job title, age, or location, and then build campaigns targeted at that group. It can be a more expensive tactic than other marketing approaches because of the lack of customization and scale economies. learn here Micro-Marketing

Shopify or Big Cartel for small business site?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:47 AM PDT

Hello small business owners! I am wanting to get some opinions on these two e-commerce sites.

One major thing that is critical to my website is my customs area. Similar to websites that print stuff for customers, I would like to do the same. So this requires customers to upload images.

I'm okay with cartels 500 products to plan because I do not believe I will ever have 500 products listed at once because I will turn older products into packs of clearance.

What do you think? I'm unsure if this could help your opinions but I do not currently make much revenue and I am on Etsy and currently trying to spread to multiple platforms especially for customs and wholesale.

I can not wait to here your replies!

Have you ever heard of this? Trying to decide if scan, legit, or ?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:57 AM PDT

I got this email overnight sent to our two published email addresses. Would you respond? It doesn't seem like it's trying to ask me for money or anything. Thoughts? Thanks!

(If you are not CEO, please kindly forward this to your CEO or General Manager, because this is urgent. If you believe this has been sent to you in error, please ignore it. Thanks) Dear CEO, This email is from China domain name registration center. Recently, we received an application from TianXin Ltd requested ************** [my domain] as their Brand Name and some asian domain names(.cn, .hk etc.). But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it's necessary to send email to you and confirm whether or not you authorize them to register those names?

    Edit: scam/sales. Got it. Thanks!

    Should I Go Self-Employed?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:25 PM PDT

Hey, I'm a creative writer, by default from my degrees and stuff. I've got a portfolio and references as to my editing skills and proofreading. I also edited for my peers before so I have a little bit there but obviously, I'm pretty much new.

Anyways, like a typical student, I'm all textbooks and no experience and I'm struggling to find it in creative sectors. Due to family commitments, I also have to stay relatively close to where I live and I think most internships have closed for covid anyways.

I was trying to figure out what to do and I've been apply for non-creative fulltime jobs. I was thinking of going self employed and doing little projects on the side for people, mostly editing and proofreading I hoped. Does anyone have any advice about the self employment process for writers (or whatever I'm considered as) or know of this would be a seriously bad and stressful mood? Also any info on hiring processes and bids and stuff when looking for clients. I've seen Upwork but I've heard really bad things.

Any help at all is appreciated. Thank you :)

    Security company sales questions..

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:09 PM PDT

So I live in a small town (7000 people) with a serviceable surrounding area of about 40,000 people. I own/operate a small security company.

We install residential and commercial alarm systems and camera systems.

Question is: I'm having a really hard time getting new customers, we are currently surviving on existing customers and I feel blessed to even have a job.. but I look around at other "trades" and they seemed to be booked out months in advance. How do I get new customers? Or what's going on?

More history: dad started the business in 1984, and I started working for him in 2005, then bought him out in 2015. Almost the only time we ever lose customers is when they move away. Very vveeerryy rarely have we lost a customer on "bad terms" (like it's happened maybe 3 times in the last 15 years)

We get maybe 2 or 3 calls a month from "new potential customers" the rest is service for the existing customer base. And out of those 2 or 3 calls, ill do quotes and maybe get 1 out of 3 jobs I bid.

I have a Facebook page that I post on at least once a month, but even when I do it only engages maybe 7 or 8 people. I have a website which is top of the list on Google when you search "home security in (our town)". And most recently I got our van wrapped with logo/what we do. (So people can see us around town)

I know a good thing would be to get in touch with local general contractors, but the few times I've tried that it seems like they already have a "go-to" security guy..

I've seen a lot of other companies local installs, and they are pretty poor compared to ours. So I don't know, juat trying to figure out what I can do to get moving.

    Suggestions or thoughts?

Making Robots Do Your Marketing Work

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 06:01 PM PDT

Remember that dystopian future where the robot uprising happens? It's going to suck, but before that time is the time we're at right now: I'm drinking a beer. But the other thing I'm doing is marketing myself automatically:

    1. LinkedIn. I'm messaging and creating contacts for my ideal customer. I'm using software to send LinkedIn messages (right now with a 45% acceptance rate). Now, this is the start of a conversation. And over the coming weeks, they'll see my content in their LinkedIn feed.
    2. Pageviews. I know who visits my site. So when I send out proposals or am debating on who in my ecosystem is serious -- I know they're thinking about me if they're on my website. Again this is nightmare future stuff, but I know to the minute when you visit my site.
    3. Remarketing. Every blog post--every new page is a way to bring people into the ecosystem, but as every visitor feeds into a list for a digital campaign across multiple channels. Again, marketing for me 24/7.

The point is obviously that when you're small - you have to be scrappy--you can't send out proposals, chase work, and do the actual work unless you hire someone to do it. Instead, I argue that the opportunities to make robots do tasks that aren't great for (outreach at scale)... pretty great, at least right now.

Really short read/guide I put up here: https://www.matthewdeal.com/guide/small-business-automation

I hope that this is useful!

Can a LLC be used for receiving 1099?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:19 PM PDT

Long story short, my wife and I own a LLC with nothing in it. Was going to hold a rental property but it fell through. Wife lost her job about 3 weeks ago and is going to independently represent a product she sold at her old company.

Can we use that LLC to have it become 1099 to the company that owns the product, and will essentially pay commission for selling it?

    Thanks in advance.

Need Help with an Inventory Issue

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 06:38 AM PDT

Hi, so I'm actually not the owner of a small business though I do work for one. I've run into a problem that I'm not quite sure how to fix. We currently use Quickbooks for our inventory management (yes I know it's honestly pretty shitty for inventory management as it wasn't meant for that, and yes I've been trying to convince the owner to switch over to a different system which would be far better for it), and I keep running into this issue.

The company I work for is a service company that fixes A/C on boats, though we do keep our own consistent inventory and we have opened up a second business connected to the first which is solely for selling parts online. The problem I'm having is that because we are a service company, the mechanics often need to buy parts from many different vendors including many we don't often do business with. We do have our own regular stock inventory which I keep track of but how do I deal with all these parts we buy from other random vendors or even with parts we only buy from our regular vendors on rare occasions for specific jobs? In the past we tried to add every single part we ever bought into our inventory system and made them non-inventory but that just clogged up the system way too much. Recently we've been labeling the parts in quickbooks all under the same 'misc' part name and in the description we put the vendors part # and info for the part. Should we keep doing this, or is there a better way we can deal with this issue?

Edit: So I see I have kinda screwed up in describing our parts system. So at the business I work at, I am the only one handling parts as it is a very small company with only four mechanics. When I said earlier that we have, "been labeling the parts in quickbooks all under the same 'misc' part name and in the description we put the vendors part # and info for the part", I did not mean every single item we have in our inventory is this misc item. Essentially how it has been working is we have our regular inventory of parts which we keep in stock, and then whenever we buy parts from vendors that we will likely never buy again we use the 'misc' part in our system and follow what I described above.

Are personal guarantees as dangerous as they seem?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 03:50 PM PDT

I formed my own company last year and I'm now at the point where I'm getting ready to approach potential clients.

A core part of my business' project development involves filing applications with my country's government, and if those applications are denied for whatever reason, the project is dead in the water.

The risk of this happening can be minimized to an extent by involving the government early and taking gradual steps, but it still requires tens of thousands of dollars to get past the first, riskiest stage.

With this in mind, I'm finding it very difficult to accept taking out a loan with a personal guarantee attached, which seems to be the only option for a small business like mine.

If the project were to fail - despite my best efforts to minimize the risk of that happening - and the lender demanded I personally repay the loan, it would likely financially ruin me for life. I am in my mid-20s, don't own a home or any valuable personal assets, and have <$10,000 savings. If I had to repay the loan I'd likely be forced to repay all my savings and then have to declare bankruptcy on top of that.

Is this really what is considered normal? I find it hard to believe that every small business owner has to stake their entire livelihood just to get started. Do we, as developed countries, really create such a hostile and unforgiving environment for enterprise?

This might sound like the naive whining of a 'typical young person', but I genuinely cannot understand how most people accept this monumental risk.

Electric forklift power usage while driving?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I'm not sure where to post this on Reddit so I thought I would try here. I purchased an electric forklift that is 6 years old with about 4000 hours. It's a 3 wheel Clark.

I'll have it in a few days but about 2.5 miles from the warehouse. Sadly, I don't know the state of the battery other than that it functions. I believe the battery originally was 36v 800 ah.

So my question here is does the forklift drain the battery quickly when driving without a load on the forks? If a new battery lasts an 8 hour shift, how much of the battery would be drained in 2.5 miles?

Should I fire my consultant? Not sure what my expectations should be

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:56 PM PDT

I hired a business consultant early April to help streamline operations (improve efficiency, hire the right people, develop better business systems etc.) and reduce the load I'm taking on as a one man business.

There is only one thing that he's done for me in the past 2 months, and that's introduced me to a fantastic accountant. My books have been cleaned up, my taxes filed, and all my revenue/profits are being tracked accurately

But my consultant has done nothing for me directly. He made a lot of promises which all sounded great but has capitalized on none of them so far. I'm sorely disappointed, but I don't know if my expectations are too high. How do you know if you should keep a consultant or not? How long should you give him/her to see results?

Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus vs Xero

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:07 PM PDT

    Hey r/smallbusiness

Myself and 3 partners left our previous jobs to open a consulting-type business. I'm going to need an accounting software that can take care accounting for basic office operations, reimbursement for expenses, and generate invoices (but not take payments) for clients.

When I was planning out my new business I planned on doing QB Desktop pro, however it looks like some changes came down the pipeline between last year and this year. I'm now conflicted on if that is still the way to go (it's what my accounting firm prefers but its not mandatory we use QB) or if I should just look into doing Wave/Xero. Can anyone give me some input? Also to note I'm not sure which version of QB Desktop is the right purchase (it is priced differently all over the internet - $199 on sale from QB, $400 on amazon, etc).

    Thanks in advance!
