    Sometimes shit just happens

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:26 PM PDT

This was early last year in the first few months of the pandemic. Me and my girlfriend had been working hard on our e-commerce store which we were running out of our townhouse within a small gated community. We shipped via USPS and would schedule pickups once a week and leave them outside our door.

One day we had about 80 packages we left out RIGHT outside of our door the night before. Around 2pm the postman rings our doorbell

    "Hey, where'd the packages go?"

    What do you mean?

"I came around a few hours ago and dragged the bags of packages from the door to the curb so it'd be easier for me to pick up when I came back, where'd they go???"

I paused for a moment and told him..... Uhhh, buddy... you dragged them to the curb? It's trash day....

"Yeah but where's the packag- ... oh...."

I called the local branch and the lady on the phone was extremely apologetic and admitted fault from the postman. She said to follow up on Monday, but they continued to drag their feet, not get back to me, etc.

Here's what makes the situation even more complicated though. So, I still had 80 customers who needed their goods. The mishap with USPS was our problem, not theirs. We went and remade all of the goods and repackaged them ready to ship. Then we got back in touch with the local branch regarding trying to get a reimbursement. While the total value of the packages was around $2800, the cost of replacing everything was probably only $700 or so, so that's likely the amount our claim would be for.

They told me that in order to process a claim, I would need to provide a full list of tracking numbers for each package I wanted to claim. However, I had already re-printed the labels for all of the packages that had been thrown in the trash. To the governing body, it would appear the packages were never actually missing since they ended up getting shipped shortly after anyway. The only way to make this work was to unpackage all of the orders, tear off the labels and manually create new ones. This would take at-least a few hours.

Here's the real kicker though. In order to do this, I'd have to buy 80 new shipping labels and leave the other 80 missing ones sitting in limbo, meaning I'd have to pay another ~$600 out of pocket and hope that my missing package money + the label cost got reimbursed. The thing is, once it's been 30 days you can no longer void USPS labels. So, I'd have to go through all that effort to even submit the claim, only to potentially risk losing an additional $600 in postal fees?

I thought about it for a moment said "eh, fuck it, let's just eat the loss".

It sucks that a postman who was clearly in the wrong cost us $700 and a days worth of work, but yah know... sometimes shit just happens. The effort to fight it wasn't worth the trouble. That's part of life sometimes, accept the situation as it is, calculate the time/reward payoff, and proceed accordingly.

    Opening an arcade

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:09 PM PDT

Good day everyone! I'm opening a retro arcade in my town in northwest indiana. I'm looking for any other current or previous arcade owners in here that may have some tips on things I won't see coming. We're going to open as a free play model where you pay a set amount and play all the games for free once you're inside. The space/employees/insurance/maintenance/fixed assets (the games) are pretty much all lined up, just curious if anyone has experience and can tell any things I don't know that I don't know. I have business experience as I own a few different entertainment spaces and a few service based businesses, so I'm really looking for anyone specific to arcades or barcades. Thanks so much!

How to start a family attraction?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:22 PM PDT

I am looking to start a small business in 2 years time in a tourist location close to me. We want to open a Mini-golf/Restaurant, but I'm not sure where to begin, what pitfalls to look for, and how to achieve it in such a short time? Any and all help would be amazing, thank you.

Any small market or friends and family bakers?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:35 PM PDT

I am going to be attending two farmers markets and have one year round market stall. My ideal is to have people place orders for pick online at these markets and where my commercial kitchen is.

Until I get to that point - how much product do I bring? 6 pies? 12? I don't want to run out but I don't want huge quantities of leftovers.

I know there's not a magic number but more where did you start and where did you end up?

[ON, Canada] Can I use a business (corporation) as a structure for side hustles and passive income?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT

Not sure if this is a stupid question but I have no clue.

Let's say I want to start multiple side hustles or passive income streams. Can I start a corporation and have all my money go there? My aim would be to minimize taxes and have limited liability if I get sued.

    Restaurant charge backs

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:18 AM PDT

My restaurant has been open for over 2 and a half years and I got my first charge backs!

A regular customer who has ordered 24 times and always orders for pickup through our online store, filed 5 different chargebacks from April and May - all just now. The orders were made online so she does get an email receipt.

If the food was bad, why did she come back so frequently and wait so long to do something about it? If the food was mistakenly taken this would have been resolved immediately in-store.

It's just so blatantly fraud. Who files chargebacks almost 2 months later for FOOD!? She has stopped coming since then and I'm sure something happened that made her unhappy but she never communicated with us.

I've heard that chargebacks on restaurants are rare. Do I have a good chance of winning the disputed charges?

Market research without losing your ideas?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:04 PM PDT

I want to open in an untapped market in a tourist destination, but I want to make sure I'm not giving my ideas away to someone before I can get into business. How would I go about doing market research without giving away a potentially good idea?

Customer portal to view invoices & statements

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:12 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm trying to find a way for my customers to have access to a portal to view invoices and statements.

We run a WooCommerce site, Hike POS in one bricks & mortar store, and use Xero for the books.

Xero natively allows customers to see only current and outstanding invoices, but not history or statements. There are a couple of add-ons for Xero I've seen that achieve this. One is Invoiced, but that's $500/mo and better suited to much larger scale use. Another is Invoice Sherpa, but the 2-3 customers a month we need this for doesn't justify the $50/mo.

Do you know of any other options or even a way of such a portal being accessed through WooCommerce?

    Thanks!

    Small Business/Office IT Support

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:39 PM PDT

What do y'all do for that? Hire someone for that? Contract it out? To an individual or company? In general how much do you allocate for that? 1% of office costs? 5%?

Also, what exactly do IT do for a small (say management) company that uses say, Comcast Business for internet (and I guess) security. Does that company even need IT?

Finally got offered a loan... sorta

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:09 AM PDT

Finally got offered a loan!!!! Kinda....

So I've literally been dealing with this mess of a program for over a year and have yet to receive a penny from the sba. I've written easily 500 emails called another 400 and have gotten nowhere. I was declined for the loan originally , told I was going to get the 1000 grant for weeks until it ran out of money then got the targeted advance invite in March got declined because I didn't show a 30 percent decline ( I started my biz 12/2019, only made just under 1k that month and only claimed that amount on my taxes for 2019) I sent in for re-evaluation because the rules were you had to be in operation by feb/2020 and if you didn't have an 8 week period in 2019 they were supposed to use a different formula to show the loss in revenue because they couldn't compare an 8 week period in 2020 to 2019 as there wasn't enough weeks to do so... and because of Covid, I have multiple 8 week spans in 2020 that have a 30-100 percent reduction compared to other 8 week periods in 2020 so by the verbiage in the bill and using the different formula for the people that opened in the end of 2019/early 2020, I do infact have a 30 percent reduction and a 50 percent as well and should also qualify for the supplemental.. ok so to my next point, I have been contact by 3 separate "loan specialists" or loan "officers" in the past two weeks all basically stating that they have been appointed to take over my case file and to expedite the process etc (I'm guessing because I emailed mr Rivera and ms Guzman multiple times and recently threatened to give my congresspeople a heads up as well as file lawsuits because I was being discriminated against and my civil rights violated and how I was just disappointed that this was what my tax dollars got me etc etc) so the most recent loan specialist contacted me weds to ask if I was in bankruptcy and requested a blank check(I had already uploaded one multiple times in the portal along with emailed every one of the 7 email addresses I have for sba a copy of the check) I wrote her back that day explaining in much greater detail everything I summarized in this post as well as asking her if she handled the advances as well ( apparently they also put my file into RECONSIDERATION for the loan I was declined for) so I decided to check my portal, all of a sudden I had a loan offer and all my boxes were now able to be clicked to sign documents and verify myself etc (the one to upload docs had been open and completed with the 20 separate docs they requested like 4506 and 1040 and ID and explanation of low score etc) so I emailed my loan specialist again because the loan amount was only for 1900 yes nineteen hundred... and I assumed it was due to them only using my 2019 taxes (earned about 950 so 24 mos x 950 a year is 1900) and I explained again how I just started in dec and that I made 57000 in 2020 even with Covid and I felt that I should be able to get more than 1900 because what is that going to even do? I haven't heard a word back and I've tried calling her and emailing and now don't know what to do .. should I just accept the amount and then once I finally get ahold of her see if they'll increase it like I have no clue I just desperately need the funds and I still haven't heard back from the targeted re-evaluation uhhh this is so nerve racking anyone have any suggestions or dealt with anything remotely similar ??? Please anything will help at this point !!!

    Selling imported food product

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:44 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have a few questions for anyone who has insight or experience with producing food related products that are imported. If I were to get a hold of a farm in a foreign country that would source, produce & pack (make a complete product) and have it imported to the US to sell:

    1. What are the laws and regulations i.e import, fda, tax situation & licenses
    2. What about contracts and language barriers
    3. How to make sure product keeps quality when not physically overseeing production

TIA, also if you have any additional info that might be helpful would greatly appreciate it!

Small business income and house buying

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:04 AM PDT

I recently started a small business detailing cars, currently I'm projected to break 150k/per year in profit after bills, taxes, etc. On average how long do I have to show this level of income before a bank will let me either finance a house, or a new car? I've got a good credit score and I'm working on building my business credit as well.

    Revive Instagram or start fresh?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:05 PM PDT

I run a small marketing agency with about 10 clients. I started an Instagram account around a year ago and was posting marketing tips and carosuel posts. I started getting a bit of attention and I got overwhelmed and stopped posting to focus on my clients.

I'm thinking of starting on social media again so would it be better to start a new account or try and revive the old account?

The account has no engagement but i have 3.5k followers (all organic).

Would you even consider letting your customers pay in crypto if you could alway receive the payment in a currency of your choice?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:10 PM PDT

I've been thinking about a problem I had lately. I have a growing proportion of my assets stored in crypto and would love to be able to pay for things with it directly. However most places don't accept crypto payments. So instead I'd have to convert my crypto to fiat and use that to pay for things which is a high friction process.

At this point I also get that it's not entirely realistic for all businesses to start accepting crypto and have your books exposed to a potentially volatile asset. So I was wondering, what if instead there was a payment system (like PayPal) that handles the conversion automatically so that I can pay in crypto but your business can receive the payment immediately in regular USD (or any currency of your choice).

I'm curious if this would be something you'd consider using for your business? Or maybe something like this already exists?
