My business within 1 year made $360,000 in sales how to find investors / get a loan to produce more inventory?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 02:16 PM PDT

Last summer I have created new e-commerce and within 1 year I made $360,000, I'm looking to produce new models for my brand but I do not have much cash flow to do that, the product is expensive to produce and the shipping price has been increased 8x.

I'm trying to find an investor or get a loan but I do not have idea how to do that since my business currently is registered in the USA but I do not live there.

Small business website not generating many leads. Feedback as to why?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 01:06 AM PDT

I'm learning to be a web developer so I've used this project to help train. I quite like the end result of the website but I'm not sure why it's not generating leads?

Do you think that you could take a look and spot any areas that would put you off?

    - Is it clear what the service is?

    - Do you understand the value proposition?

    - Is the web design, writing and flow easy to follow?

    Here's the link: www.decorelm.com

    Thank you!

Having an intern sign a contract?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 03:59 AM PDT

I own a bookstore in my area and since I've started, about three or four have popped up using the same business model as mine. I have a junior at a local college who reached out to me and wants to be an unpaid intern for the summer. I, of course, think it's a great idea however, my mentor and Mom are wary that she is going to come in, see my systems, and then just join the ranks of others trying to do what I do. So my question is, should I have them sign some sort of contract to protect my business? My parents are realtors and are suggesting a non-compete but I'm curious how that would work with an intern who will likely be working with me for only three months. Any and all advice is appreciated. TYIA.

What are common expenses small business owners don’t know they can write off?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Heard a real estate investor would have his kids come to the office to shred papers/clean windows and write off their allowance as employee wages and it made me curious. What things can be written off that most people don't realize can be classified as a business expense?

Having a " WTF " kind of week.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 12:30 PM PDT

Venting to my fellow small business owners. After surviving the pandemic and a stressful 2020, now getting hit with rapidly increasing and unpredictable labor and goods costs feels like a 1-2 punch.

Trying the figure out my pricing, my wage rates, adjusting to ever changing supplier rates...it hasn't been a fun week. I am hoping this shit settles down for the Summer, because this is really frustrating. Running a business with no real grasp on costs is trying, to say the least.

We will work through it, so it isn't a survival issue, but it is not fun. LOL

Some of this started before this week, but is seems like this all came to a head this week. Anybody get hit with similar issues recently.

Afraid to grow business beyond what I can handle personally

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:27 PM PDT

I'm a career firefighter and also have a small limo business on the side. Recently I've come across this dilemma of finding myself afraid to grow the business because I don't know how I'll manage it when it grows. I know just who to call to blow the business up but then what? Of course anyone would say this is a good problem to have but it's been holding me back.

I have 1 car and it works fine with my schedule and I can still manage the phones when I'm at work. Years ago I added an additional car and an SUV thinking naively it would be smooth. Figured just have the drivers run around everywhere and I'll just hang on a phone. This resulted in a lot more calls and a lot more managing of unforeseen problems and became too much for me on my own to manage with my other job.

If I had 50 cars I feel like I could justify dispatchers and all the other luxuries that come with a bigger company. How can I pay a dispatcher when I only have a few calls coming in? I can't pay per call because sometimes there's a quote that comes in or a few confirmations need to be sent. How can I pay someone for a 24/7 service when they're not needed that entire time. I might be tied up at work and have no problems or I may have a problem that requires my full attention for 20-30 minutes.

I need a duplicate of me that can fill in when I'm not available. Any thoughts on this transition process?

    Question for business

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 12:46 AM PDT

If I have one big business (we gone her "mama bear" for now) do I list her as a regular LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp.?

And then for the other business following (we gone call them her "baby bears" ) do I still need to file them as an LLC or just register them as a regular business license but with "Mama Bear" as the Business Name and the "Baby Bears" as the DBA 💁🏽‍♀️

Because the mama bear business doesn't have one specific business, she's more like the Corporation/headquarters of the baby bear businesses

How do I build customer confidence without a brick and mortar?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 05:07 PM PDT

My business is repairing carbon fiber bike frames which I've been doing for several years as a side hustle but I'm just about to transition to trying it full-time. I expect that I will eventually grow big enough to need and justify a commercial space but for now I'm doing all the work from my house. Most of my business is local so I will meet with people in public areas like parking lots or I will occasionally go directly to a customer's house. I try not to have people come to my house for many reasons.

Most people have no problems trusting me since they are referred to me by local bike shops or previous customers. But there is occasionally some hesitancy from some customers which I totally understand since they're in a parking lot handing over their multi-thousand dollar bike to a complete stranger.

Does anyone have experience with similar situations in their work? The nature of the work leaves me pretty well covered since I leave the meeting with their bike as collateral in case they ghost me but they have nothing more than my word I'll bring it back.

One thing I've offered before is I will let them photograph my drivers license but I don't love that since it seems like a possible opening to identity theft.

What tips do you have for 1: creating a professional interaction in a non-professional setting and 2: what kind of collateral or insurance can I offer to put my customers at ease?

Client hasn't paid, best course of action?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT

    Hi Team!

I'm the owner of a carpet cleaning business in Alberta, Canada and it's just a husband and wife show. Looking for some advice on what to do with a not so nice customer, I apologise as its quite long to explain it all. TLDR at the bottom. TIA for any help as well

Our standard process on the day of the clean with our clients present is first to complete a pre clean walkthrough, sign a contract, complete the clean, complete a post clean walkthrough with our clients present and then take payment when finished. It's quite thorough and allows us to meet any expectations are clients have typically.

Two things to note which are important, we don't move furniture and we don't clean underneath furniture.

I'll call my client Karen, because well.. for obvious reasons.

Anyway Karen books us in for a clean over instagram. Vinyl floors, an area rug and some upholstery. Upon booking she tells us she'll be able to come for the pre inspection.

Karen sent two photos of the main floor and her original estimate was about $550.

Karen adds on all the mattresses in the home a few days later and I decide to add them onto the work order when we do our walkthrough.

The night before the job she informs us she won't be able to come to the walkthrough. No problem as we have lots of clients who hire us and don't live in the city. We inform her we'll complete our walkthrough, adjust our estimate and call to confirm with her before carrying out the work.

We arrive at 9am and complete our walkthrough, turns out it's a three story home with vinyl on all levels and our quote comes out to be over $900 adding on two flights of stairs, adjusting the size of the rug, adjusting the sq footage of the floors, the king bed and two single mattresses to the clean.

I call Karen and she's not happy with the price adjustment and takes off all the mattresses. After measuring out the home, adding on the two staircases that weren't mentioned, we're now at $650 instead of the original $550 and she reluctantly agrees over the phone to confirm the work.

She's upset with our adjustments as we had 'all the photos' and should've known before the clean. She asks if the bathroom tiles and showers are going to be included as well as that was expected of us. We don't have it on our work order nor any prior communication of adding that in. I tell her I'll take care of the bathroom tile complimentary to smooth things over. It's 112 Sq Feet and a 112$ complimentary discount.

She tells us to go ahead with the work.

We didn't complete a walkthrough with her, we didn't get her to sign our contract and we don't have a credit card on file but it's worked out in the past and we've got a confirmation of the work over the phone.

We clean it all, turned out great imo. The same standard of work I give to any other home or property. It's an AirBnb so lots of dirt is pulled out from the floors and upholstery. We finish the work and send the invoice off at about 1230pm.

Close to 7pm we start to get some very upset text messages and photos of how everything underneath the furniture is dirty and uncleaned. The shower is still looking dirty. There's dirt under the beds and we didn't even try to clean it. I call immediately. No answer, just more texts. I tell her I won't respond to any text messages and will need a phone call from her.

I get a phone call at 745pm, she's not happy about the shower floors, there's dirt under the beds, wine stains under the cabinet, popcorn under the area rug. I explain that we don't move furniture, don't clean underneath furniture, that we didn't charge her for that and it's all in an email sitting in her inbox sent two days prior to the clean. I apologise for not meeting her expectations but tell her straight up we don't clean any of the things she's listed and complained about. If she wanted the floor underneath all of the furniture cleaned she would have had to move it prior to the clean, something we say in our email sent 2 days prior.

She's not happy and tells me she has to speak to her husband about it all.

I get an email around 1030pm. Not happy with this, with that. Same things I've mentioned above. Karen is happy to pay for the upholstery cleaning but won't pay for the floor cleaning.

The next day at 11am I fire of an email in response about our satisfaction guarantee, how even though she didn't sign off on our contract that would allow for us to return and clean any mistakes, we'll come back to do so anyway if she wants. I made it very clean we'd only clear up any issues that we've had on our work order and that she'd need to be there personally as well. Again trying to be as professional as possible and salvage anything that's possible.

Another email later at 5pm, she seems less upset and has cleaned everything up already herself and doesn't want us to come back. Thinks our google reviews are fake (103 five star reviews yeet!) and that we've given her a lesser service than the rest of our customers.

I call twice by 530pm to try and get in touch, no response. I send an email in response to ask her to call me. Still haven't heard anything and it's not 9pm.

All I have is a $50 deposit and a not so pleasant taste in my mouth from this whole ordeal. Lots of lessons learned on how to protect myself in the future which is the silver lining of course!

Now $600 is owed. I know it isn't a TON of money, but it's not exactly $20 bucks either. Honestly I'm pretty peeved that I gave her a free tile cleaning to help smooth things over and this still blows up in my face.

I'm curious to know what would be the best way to approach the situation should Ms. Karen attempt to ghost me or not pay me whatsoever?

TLDR: Client isn't happy with work that wasn't requested or paid for. Offered to come back and fix mistakes for items on the work order. Won't pay invoice to the tune of $600. Won't pick up phone or respond now. What should I do?

How do I report or bookkeep what was paid to business credit card payments from my personal account?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I have Small S-Corp established in 2017. For some months I had to pay business credit card payments from my personal check-in account. we didn't have much revenue last year. Since we are slowly getting back with our clients, we are seeing some revenue from a couple of months.

How do I report or bookkeep what was paid to business credit card payments from my personal account? Also now I would like to take that money back... how do I report it once I take it back. so don't have to show it as my income.

    Thank you

    Rebranding/changing business name

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 11:26 PM PDT

Hi! So, about a year and a half ago, I started a wedding stationery business. About 6 months later I transitioned into selling hand poured candles and soon I'll be adding handmade home decor to that. I feel like I've completely moved away from the stationery. I make maybe one wedding suite every few months. Whereas, the candle and home decor aspect is thriving. My whole business branding is based on the stationery aspect. Especially the name, Le Papier Raffiné, which translates literally to 'The Refined Paper'. I want to rebrand and change my business name. Especially since I'm considering just removing the wedding stationery from my shop completely. But, I'm scared about what that would entail. I have stockists who stock my candles which have my current business name all over them so I'm not sure how to start when it comes to transitioning new stock with updated labels to them without confusing them and their customers too much. Not to mention my own customers too. I'm not sure where to start in general! It seems like such a daunting thing to do. But I understand things like this happen and changes happen. Any tips on how I should handle this would be very much appreciated.

    Questions about online selling

I was approached by Vogue asking if I wanted to be part of their advertorial showcase. Worth it?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:09 AM PDT

I got an email today from British Vogue asking if I'd be interesting in their advertorial showcase. I make handmade jewelry. They seem legitimate. The email address appears to be their publishers and invoices are issued after the magazine goes out. I get to say that 'as seen in Vogue' on my site and social media. I'm really focused on growing my brand so just being able to associate it with Vogue seems worth it but-

holy smokes it's expensive. It's a three month package, meaning I get to be on their October, November and December issue. It's 1000USD Per issue. So a total of 3000USD plus tax. Would this be worth it? Family says it is but I'd love to hear other creators and small business owners opinions too!

Had to fire an employee. They left me a fake 1 star review.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 07:03 PM PDT

Had to let an employee go today for a lot of reasons. Later I got a text message from him telling me that I should be careful about firing people because they might f*** me over.

One minute after getting that text I received a negative google review. I do not have the a customer by that name.

I flagged the review but from what I've read it will most likely not be removed.

Does anyone know of anything I can do about this?

    Pension Plans

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 10:05 PM PDT

I was wondering if there is some kind of a pension plan system that allows small business owners to offer competitive pensions just like large corporations do. I'm not talking about 401(k)'s. 401(k)s were never meant to be a substitute for a retirement plan. If they were, they wouldn't be called 401(k)s.

I got to thinking of how UPS is leaps and bounds more efficient rights now compared to FedEx. The difference is in their labor structure. The UPS workforce is composed of teamsters that have long term retirement plans. My guess is they're not playing games with extended unemployment benefits and have a long term view of their future. In other words, they have job security and as a result perform better. FedEx, on the other hand, is composed of independent routes and their model of blacklisting bad employees has deteriorated. These independent routes don't offer the level of job security as the others and therefore create more problems. FedEx is driven by penalties and UPS is driven by benefits. UPS is succeeding right now.

So, my question is whether there is some sort of association we can join or some kind of a pool that would allow us to offer something like the job security UPS is offering? Just curious.

Would you use a service like this?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 01:11 PM PDT

I have an idea to launch a service to help local businesses automate they're social media and keep their content high quality.

The idea is to go in once a month and do a 2-3 hour photography shoot of the business, products, atmosphere, whatever the business is focusing on that month. I'd edit ~30 photos from the shoot, crop them, and schedule them to automatically upload to Facebook and Instagram with a social media planner (I'm think creator studio).

I've found online companies doing something similar but they only give stock photos and cheesy graphics, my service would be custom photos shot at location once a month.

Online companies I've found charge around $300 for a post a day, and don't set up any automation or caption. I'd plan on having my client write a caption for each post so they have control over what it says, and I'd take care of the rest of the hassle.

Would you use this for your business? If so what would you pay for it to be worth it to you? Is there something you'd change or add to make it more valuable?

I built it so small businesses and entrepreneurs can post their availability for all to see, free.

Do I just need to make a social media ad and pay a bunch of money? How do I get this thing out there?

How to properly use IG for my marketing & IT company?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:28 PM PDT

I've been struggling with this for a while. I own a digital marketing & IT company, we do web development, PPC, and social media management and then I have a team of integrators that install security cameras, security systems, and automation systems. I was contemplating making an IG for the marketing and a 2nd one for the IT/Security. Now I'm thinking I just put badges on the posts and have marketing in the left column and IT/security in the right.. What do you guys think?

My name's David Seidman, and I'm a writer at the tech company Exela Technologies. (You can see some of my work at https://dmr.exelatech.com/blogs.)

I'm working on an ebook about digital mail services -- like my company's Digital Mailroom (https://dmr.exelatech.com/) -- for small and medium businesses. If you use digital mail, I'd like to interview you.

In particular, I'd like to know:

    • Why did you switch from accepting paper mail at your office to outsourcing it to a digital mail service?

    • How has the change affected your business?

    • What features and benefits should small businesses look for if they want to hire a digital mail service?

I prefer to conduct the interview by email –– I'm at [david.seidman@exelatech.com](mailto:david.seidman@exelatech.com) –– but I can work in any way that works for you.
