Do you have a hard time finding like-minded people?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 07:01 AM PDT

    Hey guys!
I'm 15, in high school. I have big dreams, I'm working towards them.

I just don't want to be stuck in mediocrity, that's all. Now, I don't know what it is but I can't resonate/relate with anyone. For example, my classmates have such a narrow worldview and want to live such a linear life. My parents believe in me and always say "I know you'll do something good in life" but that really doesn't do anything for me.
I need people who I could talk to that I could actually resonate with. I need people who could guide me.

I don't where I'm going with this post...just wanted to know if you guys have this problem too?

UPDATE: Overwhelmed by the amount of people who relate with me. Upon request, I have created a WhatsApp group where like minded people could join and discuss ideas and ventures! Here's the link: https://chat.whatsapp.com/Jl3MV6fsBL9BfzwrZRd2Wi

Heads up on scammer in this forum

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:43 AM PDT

This one guy with the username dylanburton with a number at the end of his name which I now forgot and he blocked me, but created a thread on here saying he was selling his business. I was stupid to be interested and trusted the people in this forum. Long story short he made me pay him $1800 for just a stupid business idea of drop shipping on Facebook marketplace. Whole thing was a scam never tried to help or anything and was definitely not selling me any business. Stay away from him or anyone trying to sell something like this. Consequently I've lost 1800 that is non refundable. At least you guys can learn from my mistake.

I'm sick of not being taken seriously being self-employed.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:47 PM PDT

If you tell someone you are self employed they look at you weird. The US has one of the lowest rates of self employment of any industrialized country and I think I figured out why.

The subject of "what do you do for a living" is so common when meeting new people, it feels like employment or work is literally as important as our appearance or personality. I've been asked that as one of the first questions when dating women, at the doctor's office, the list goes on and on.

Basically the logical thought process I've observed with most people is that if you can't work for others, then something is wrong with you.

Then of course the credit situation comes into play. I live in an at-will state and can be fired at any time. Banks see you working for someone else at a lousy rate of pay as being more "solid" than working for yourself.

Which makes no sense. I can't be fired from self-employment. I can literally make money forever. I had a hell of a time getting a car loan and luckily my credit union helped me out. You can show them your bank statement showing $75k in income and they don't care. You can deduct so much stuff on taxes that my adjusted income is less than what I make. Which also puts me at a disadvantage because people working a regular job, their income looks different on paper than a self-employed person.

How Do I Scale the Strong Word of Mouth Marketing that I Have?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 07:27 AM PDT

I'm in the automotive industry and had a question about scaling my outreach/marketing. Our word of mouth marketing is very strong but are having problems scaling that. Targeted ads is what I'm thinking is the next best action but any advice would be appreciated. We have an Instagram that we would also like to drive more traffic to to help generate leads. Thanks again and can provide any more info as needed.

I created a lightweight Sales CRM in Google Sheets + Gmail. Looking for Feedback. :)

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:58 AM PDT

Sales peeps spent most of their day working on spreadsheets even after having so many advanced sales CRMs in the market. Spreadsheets have a low learning curve and most salespeople are already familiar with it. This is what we experienced when we first started cold emailing for our service business.

Based on this idea we created a Google Sheets and Gmail addon that enables a lightweight sales CRM enough to manage email outreach campaigns for startups and small teams.

I am looking for a few people to try it out and share constructive feedback to improve the tool. Please comment and I will share access.

Event attendees from your large competitors are a great source of potential customers to your b2b business. Here's how to find them.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:31 AM PDT

As an entrepreneur, if you still doubt that these people are a great source of potential customers, here's why you should try it anyway:

People attending conferences are investing time and money in it, so this is a relevant topic to them right now. When you reach out to these people, it's like speed networking on steroids, but with the most relevant audience for your business.

You'll hardly find a better opportunity to start a new conversation with someone that is in the same mindset as you, meeting new people and exploring new solutions for their challenges.

    ------

Here's a quick 3-step process if you want to try it out:

    1. Open your competitor's LinkedIn page. Go to events.

You'll find all past and upcoming events.

    2. Open a relevant event to you and click to attend.

Once you're in, you'll be able to find on a LinkedIn search everyone that is also attending the event.

    3. Use a dedicated lead gen tool to export all the contacts (with emails) - or you can use a free phantombuster account specifically for this

With only one click, you can get all the data you need from these contacts to reach out to the ones that match your ICP.

    -------

This should be enough for a quick first test or to get you inspired to learn more.

If you're looking to dig deeper on how to leverage your competitor's events to find more potential customers on a recurring basis, feel free to check this guide I've created after testing this approach with dozens of our clients.

    Happy prospecting!

Started the family business with my mom and I feel like my work is being undermined and don't want this to impact our relationship. Any advice ?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 12:46 PM PDT

So to start off I'm the one who started the company , I registered it , I did everything under the sun , I reply to all emails , I was the one to get our manufacturer , create our logo , I built the website myself , handle all the social media (instagram , pinterest, tiktok etc) , reach out to our customers etc.

However when all is said and done I feel like my parents are undermining the hell outta my work. Firstly my mom creates the product , my dad could be considered an investor but that's it. However when talking about the future of the company and when and how much I'd get paid it came down to me getting 10%....and tbh guys I felt like my parents undermine literally everything I did to cultivate this business I literally started it and do all the work besides the making of the product. I feel like they think I'm some kid so me getting the 10% is like a big deal (I'm 28).

So my mom is like "oh if we make 2 million worth of profit , you'd get a lot money" , guys I'm the one who sits and reads books non-stop and researches and then creates and manages everything. I'm unsure how to feel or what to do because I love both my parents a lot and they've done a ton for me but I'm clearly not a child I ran this whole business. Is there any advice or suggestions you guys could give ? Even if I'm being unreasonable or not seeing it clearly please call me out on it and I would appreciate feedback.

TL;DR : Feel like my work is being undermined despite me doing literally all the work and at the end I may not be paid fairly.

just created a niche pm platform. need feedback

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 08:02 AM PDT

    Hey guys.

Sounds bizarre, but I spent 73 days trying to figure out what problems, when it comes to project management, professional services firms face. Insights aren't 100% accurate, but here's what I figured out so far:

At least 51,32% of project management tasks like communicating project status, extracting data, filling out reports, tracking progress are repetitive, and can be automated to save some time and money. So I tried to design a solution - Jarvis, a PM platform that would automate all of the above things.

According to data from beta testers, on average, Jarvis saves up to 10,43 hours per month per employee, and up to 19,61 hours per month per project manager. The math is simple: if your employee's average hourly rate is 50$, then you're gonna save ~ $500/month.

I understand it's not for everyone, but those who have any of the above problems, DM me.

    the platform's free.
just need ur feedback to understand what to improve.

My entrepreneurship is based on a service and product. What do you think would be a better combination to both of them?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 02:20 PM PDT

Greetings, I want to thank you each one who post and comment. It helps always and to see how everyone is making their dream come to reality is truly something meanigful.

I am new into entrepreneurship. I have just started, and my business is about selling my service and products.

I was applying for an internship because I need it to graduate. However, I wasn't able to find because I'm in a new country and it is a new culture, hard to find an internship easily.

I have had the chance to be contacted with a company (outside where I currently live) that creates systems for any business in the world but not for space industry. They are a very good company and I have studied carefully their service and I am understanding more about their products. Their products is creating system for business such as for example, a restaurants that needs a system for orders, payments, inventory, cashier, delivery, takeaways...etc. They also make mobile applications and websites. They have artificial intelligence services as well.

I was told by the company to market their product in the current country I am in. I have thought carefully, that just going to potential clients and offer them the product is not enough. So, I gathered the skills, experience and my knowledge to use in my entrepreneurship and create a service to show the benefits (the importance of having these products in a business).

I have decided to create a service based on Business Development. Currently, I have one client who has clothes and shoes store for men and women. I have decided to create for him a business development plan, to show him a marketing strategy and to show him how it is important to use these softwares because the benefits will complete the idea of the service I provided him.

So, my idea is basically offering him as a gift a business development plan, marketing, brand management..etc as a service. For then, I offer the products of the company I am working with.

I am creating my website on WordPress, still need alot of work, but in process. I am not using a marketing strategy yet( I am looking at potential clients in streets and prepare for them presentations so that I offer the service and products).

Do you think it is a good idea? I would love to hear your opinions. Thank you in advance.

I've almost quit my successful side project several times

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 06:13 AM PDT

I'm Austin and I built GoodJobs. Over the two months I've been working on it, it's seen some pretty good success, and it's been a lot of fun to work on. It's been front-page on HackerNews, generated tons of great discussion on reddit, and a company has even paid me to list one of their open positions. And yet, I've almost ended the project several times now. Why? Because building things is hard, failure isn't fun, there's always another struggle to overcome, and the emotional aspect of indie-hacking is something I really overlooked.

    Here's the story (so far):

    The Ups

What did 'success' look like for GoodJobs? It's looked like a bunch of things, at different milestones. The first success was getting to the front page of HackerNews after launching my weekend-project MVP. This resulted in a bunch of things I would consider success. In order of importance, least to most:

    • Drove ~10k unique visitors to the site
    • Generated a bunch of discussion about the project, a lot of it positive
    • Resulted in 2-3 emails with really positive feedback
    • Caused in 8-10 companies reaching out to have their positions listed on GoodJobs
    • Convinced ~25 people to give me their emails

These things were all really cool, and generated a ton of motivation for me to keep working on the project. It also set a high bar for what I thought of as success, and I wasn't able to repeat that for a while. That caused constant doubting afterwards. Was the project really any good if I was having a small fraction of the engagements from before? Were the negative comments in the right, about the site's simplicity, its un-originality, its lack of features? Should I shut it down?

Eventually, I had some smaller success after various reddit posts about the project. There was no particular success milestone here, but it was definitely a morale boost to see consistent positive discussion about GoodJobs, and about the value it could provide. These small wins patched up the bruises from the long spell of inactivity, and I knocked out a few new features and a bunch of newsletter emails with the new momentum.

    The Downs

After this series of smaller wins, two failures came back-to-back. The first was a failed ProductHunt launch. This one was entirely my fault. I'd read a little bit about how to organize a successful launch on PH, but egotistically I felt the rules didn't apply to GoodJobs. From the positive feedback I'd gotten on other forums, I'd concluded that PH would pick up GoodJobs just by virtue of its virtue. That was wrong. It got no upvotes, drove no traffic or engagements. It died in obscurity. At the same time, the first company got back to me after I'd reached out offering a paid listing. They said 'no', and 'no' because the free listing had only driven two (2) visitors to their job description.

This didn't just feel like failure, this was concretely failure. The purpose of GoodJobs is to get engineers to interview with and join companies doing good work. That obviously wasn't happening here. I thought about how I'd end the project. A tweet? A short post? The feedback was super discouraging, but obviously useful. I needed to spend more time on getting talented engineers looking at these jobs, and less of everything else. New features don't matter if no one is using them.

I took that to heart and re-focused on some marketing efforts...

...And they worked. I convinced a company to list their position as a featured listing on GoodJobs, in return for the first $100 in revenue (Thanks Rikard @ Otovo!). That coincided with a really successful post on r/programming, and ~15k unique visitors. It's hard to overstate how validating it is to have someone pay you for something you built from scratch. It felt better than all of the other success milestones to this point.

The ups and downs of building GoodJobs have definitely been a learning experience for me. Thus far, I'd say my biggest learnings have been the following:

    • the right thing to do is sometimes the uncomfortable thing. I don't like posting links or creating content about GoodJobs, even after the positive feedback it's gotten. I'd rather think about features and technical problems, but those just haven't been the important problems to solve.
    • Building side projects takes a lot of emotional energy. I'm super privileged in this regard (no real commitments like kids or family, no huge responsibilities outside work), and still it surprised me how much my mindset affects everything about the project, and how little energy is left after 'real' work on some days.
    • I'll probably keep failing, and I'll probably keep doubting. But it's cool to look back on a couple cycles of this, and be able to think "It's alright, getting past the hard parts is the hardest part"

Thanks for reading, and until next time.

What does it really take to raise money?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 01:09 PM PDT

I'm a software engineer, and I have several idea that I'd like to explore turning into real startups.
I've built several in my off hours, but they were small due to the limited amount of time I had.
I'd like to get much more serious about the next few ideas, and would like to work on them full time.
To do so, I would need to get about 50k to give me 6 months of finances to get something off the ground.

I have no rich family friends to ask, and no real network to speak of. Is raising that money realistic?
If so, where would I even begin? I'm 100% comfortable giving away a big % of ownership, but my feeling would be googling for investors would bring me to people who wouldn't even blink in my direction as I have nothing but skills + idea, but no track record to show.

I will be mixing that 50k with my own savings, so I am putting in my own time/money in as well.

I often here about how people left their jobs to start their companies, but I never heard about how they sustained themselves in that year or two it took to get off the ground. So I dont really have a sense of what is realistic.

    Hotel project

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 12:57 PM PDT

I'm not an entrepreneur, this project isn't really going to be made, it's just a school project wich has to be possible and yes, I need your help.

So.. the flair is "internships" because I'm an intern at an hotel, I need to make the professional aptitude test (I don't know what it's called in the USA) to finish school.

Basically this projects needs to be possible to be actually made and the goal is to have a product, something that can exponentiate the visibility of the hotel for more possible customers while pleasing current customers, but I don't need to really do it, I just need to make a sustainable project for the hotel where I'm an intern at.

I though about making a wine tasting event because the hotel where I'm a student at is a business hotel, it has more clients that come in business and not for pleasure and it has a lot of big reunion rooms that could be used for a wine tasting or any other event.

I couldn't do it though because of corona, basically my teacher said that it's not a good project because it has to be a real project that could possibly be made in real life and putting almost 80 people on a room is not possible, i could trim it down to 40 people but it would lose the credibility.

So I thought of making a pack for couples with night movies and picknick and a lot of good stuff, but again.. this event/project is trash because the chance of failure is too big, it would be need special things Wich cost money and if Boone would bought it I would go bankrupt 🤣

Then I thought about something for responsible tourism, where I would make something with recycled stuff and sell it, but again, wtf am I even thinking, my project has to be done this month and I don't have any ideas to writte it

Do you guys have any idea of what the fuck could I do in this shitty project?

    Please help me 😭

    Startups supporting startups

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 12:13 PM PDT

You have a startup. You know the grind of acquiring and retaining customers.

In my opinion, there should be a sort of compassion and empathy between founders of startups.

I believe that startups should use other startups as much as possible as opposed to bigger established companies.

Now I'm not arguing that you should pay 30% more for a startup's service than an established service, nor am I saying that you should use a 5-week old status instead of something like G Suite.

What I am saying is that using a company like Undock which is well built out as opposed to a more established company.

Here are 10 well-built startups that you can look at (with their tagline):

    1. Tap - Drop-in audio-only chats and instant collaboration with your remote team.
    2. Innos Note - A platform for idea exchange and knowledge sharing.
    3. Hoist - Transform your business with video testimonials
    4. Jitter - Motion design, made simple.
    5. Writier - You write, we take care of the rest.
    6. Fundstory - Match with the right capital partner.
    7. HockeyStack - Easiest & fastest way to understand your website visitors.
    8. ilo - Understand how your tweets perform, so you can get better at Twitter.
    9. Singlelink - The open-source micro-site platform, Singlelink
    10. Undock - Save the Calendar. Save the World.

Again if these alternatives are a significant dropoff from your current solution, then by all means ignore this but if not I think startups should support startups.

Practical approach to selling a one-client list, or a "white whale?"

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 11:58 AM PDT

Not sure if anyone can help with this question, but I figured this would be a good place to ask. Not asking for a step-by-step guide, just maybe a nudge in the right direction.

    Here's the lowdown:

I'm a general contractor, residential remodeling, and relatively green in the industry. Details not really important, but I recently moved from one area (city A) where I have spent the last few years to another (city B), but I ended up not staying and moved back to the original location to take over a business I previously managed. I did so for a number of personal reasons.

During the few months I was in city B, I did a decent amount of work for family of real estate investors who is *very* well financed, but quite inexperienced. They have a history of being taken advantage of by their previous contractors, which is not uncommon in this industry, unfortunately. I, personally, found them extremely pleasant to work with for a number of reasons. The main being that they were willing to pay a fair price for the work they wanted completed. Anyone familiar with this industry knows that, in general, you will fetch higher rates while working for multiple homeowners, whereas working for real estate investors typically yields a lower profit margin, but is consistent work that is less stressful in many ways.

These investors were more than happy to meet me beyond halfway, with an expectation of quality work and good communication, having experienced what bottom dollars bids typically yield. I was more than happy to complete work for them at our agreed upon rates.

Since I left the area, I know they have had bad luck with their next contractor, and are currently completing whatever work they are skilled enough to do on their own, but making little progress. To my latest knowledge, they are currently sitting on five or so full-gut renos. At least one them has been uncompleted for roughly two years, which in this neighborhood is around $50k in missed rental income. The total contract valuation for these five properties alone probably sits somewhere between $500-700k. They also continue to look for properties, and have no intention of slowing down.

These people trust me. I would like to help them out in a very professional sense, but obviously I would also like to profit off of this. I don't want any part in managing any of these projects, as that would require me to split my time between two cities and would make my life more unmanageable than it already is, ha. My idea is to approach them with some sort of consulting/head-hunting agreement to seek out and perform due diligence on potentially suitable contractors in city B. What I'm wondering is should I only be seeking payment from the investors, or should I seek a fee from them, and then a percentage point on the contract price itself from the contractor, or something totally different?

I have zero expectation of any sort of residual income from this. My primary motivation is to raise funds for a project I have been working on to develop an MVP in an entirely unrelated industry that I am significantly more passionate about.

I appreciate any help I might receive on this matter!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I've seem similar posts and great feedback so I'm hoping I can tap into that also!

I've created a SaaS solution, which I have a few companies paying for in a closed beta (weird, but works with the heavy discount provided). Its not currently advertised at all and not open to the public. The test companies are already getting a lot of benefit for it as its post-MVP and its a niche that hasn't been catered to before. Its a data automation/BI solution.

A request that keeps coming up, and something we've done in the past, is creating some bespoke functionality which is unique to the company requesting. Where possible, we've made that functionality more generic based on the requirements and offered it to the rest of the test companies.

The issue is with pricing these bespoke changes. They buy the base package for the software which is an annual commitment but monthly cost, and they get in contact to ask for a feature bespoke to their needs. The base package is required for the bespoke feature. This is something we can provide quickly due to how our software is built. Its also easy to price, the annual commitment for both the base package and the bespoke feature(s) usually start at the same time. We price the bespoke based on how long it takes to implement + a profit margin / 12 months, and its generally very lucrative.

The issue comes when they would like a bespoke feature a few months into the annual commitment. Obviously we can't charge for 12 months as the base package would expire before then. And changing the pricing calculation to implement + profit / months remaining is quite high.

    The solutions I've come up with to this problem are sub-optimal;

    - Add an implementation charge to make up for the months already expired on the base package

    - Renew the base package with every new bespoke feature (these could come up almost every month)

I'm a novice at pricing, but I think it may be a fairly unique problem. Does anyone have any advice on how they would handle this scenario?

    Thanks for reading!

A curated list of inspiring startups from around the world

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 07:13 AM PDT

For months I was looking for websites where I can find new, interesting, and inspiring startups from all over the world. Most of the websites are listing only the very few that are already successful or are focusing exclusively on mobile apps/websites. So I decided to create my own list, share it with other people that are interested, and encourage anyone to submit their startup.

You can find the list here. I am trying to add new startups more often (even daily if possible).

Any feedback or suggestions are welcome.
