PwC lacks empathy. Venting here so I can get through this and not take it out on others. Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:29 AM PDT I lost someone I viewed like a father and grew up with during my childhood. His entire bloodline barring one person who survived was killed in a hate fueled attack. I got the news on Monday from my older brother. I was nowhere capable to work and just balling crying the entire week. Initially I said I don't want time off but then it just started to hurt more and more and was initially encouraged to take some time off and they'll try to find a replacement associate. Literally not even 2 days later the manager is messaging me being like "hey can you come back to work." I message him back saying I have to be there for my family and the funeral is on Saturday which will give closure. My dad won't leave his bed anymore. He was the only person he felt a close connection with him, viewed him as a best friend. Mngr didn't reply. Then on Friday they pretty much insist I work when I wanted to come back Monday, okay no problem. Also mention I should consider working on the weekend when I tell them I will go to the funeral so of course I say no maybe Sunday. I go to the funeral the next day which gave some good closure. Was too shaken up to work on Sunday. I return to work on Monday and have the full intent to finish my sections because of course they couldn't find a replacement associate. Like okay I get it, life, you gotta earn a living. What I didn't like was during the call my manager says "hey you know these guys need this audit to get their funding which goes towards a good cause and towards helping others. It won't look too good if I'm talking to their committee next week and we're not done the audit" in an attempt to guilt me somehow? Like buddy I don't need your lecture and this isn't going to somehow make me work harder. Yea I intend to complete my sections but maybe it's difficult for me not because of my lack of morality but because it's a tough period? And besides, they'll get their funding whether the reporting date is this week or the next. It's not a public client. I just didn't like that note from him as if the reason I'm struggling is a lack of morality. Maybe it's because I lost a childhood father figure. Maybe it's because my dad is balling the fuck out and doesn't want to be here anymore and won't leave his room. Maybe it's because my entire family is a mess and still shaking. Anyway I'm putting in an honest effort but it shows the state of the firm that they can put out work life balance messages on LinkedIn but overwork people so much they can't manage a replacement associate or can't push a private side reporting deadline back a few days even when organizationally their resources are so over stretched they can't overcome one person struggling. Job postings that do not list the pay are a waste of time. Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:31 PM PDT It's almost daily now that some recruiter sends me a job listing without pay listed. Do they think I don't care about pay? Jfc. [link] [comments]

Python and why you should learn it and not shouldn't learn it Posted: 18 Jun 2021 01:06 PM PDT After a few years of creeping the Accounting subreddit and seeing a lot of posts about what programming languages people should learn, how it can benefit their careers, does KPMG actually do auditing or just golf, I wanted to make a post about how easy python is to learn and how beneficial it can be. After 258 posts asking if accounting is worth it to learn because someone's uncles roommate said it's going to be automated away, you can finally become the automater before the robots take over. This is certainly more geared towards industry accountants or people wanting to jump over to industry from public. I say this because auditing tends to change depending on your client, position, etc. while industry tends to have a very set list of tasks that need to be done on a regular basis. I think a lot of times non-engineer people think that coding is either too hard to learn or that it wouldn't be useful as an accountant. I can say that through my career I've built out multiple reconciliations and scripts that have saved me and my team 30 or so hours during close and freed up a ton of time. As someone who has been on both sides of the interview table being able to talk about how you automated things and can code in python is a giant plus and puts you ahead of other candidates all things considered. A few examples of some things you can do with Python:
I started out learning Python from this website, http://automatetheboringstuff.com/, which is a fantastic resource and geared towards repetitive tasks that don't change too often (Month-End Close?). The author, Al Sweigart, does a much better job than I could at talking about what Python is, how to install it and use it so I'll let him speak for himself. From completing this I was able to have enough of a background to write basic enough scripts to start automating some tasks with some heavy Google and Stackoverflow viewing. Two of the really helpful modules are Pandas, which is basically excel that can parse millions of rows of data very quick, and Selenium, which allows you to automate a web browser. I'm at a point now where I can fairly quickly get a script together ad-hoc and automate whatever comes my way. Python can be as simple as setting a variable, telling the script what to look for, and having it pull things down. I'm not an engineer or a coder at all but python is extremely straight forward and logical and I was able to get up and running in a month or so, anything after the basics has been answered on StackOverflow before and can be found with some quick googling. All in all, if you're in industry learn Python. It makes month-end close easier, getting information from large sets of data, some large audit requests, and it makes you much more desirable when you're interviewing. [link] [comments]

Being told you're a burden and to quit feels great! Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:31 PM PDT I'm a staff 1 in the big 4. My mental health have been suffering from being on a toxic team. I tried getting off it and talking to my coach , but was told if I left I would get a bad reputation and that I should just keep my head down. The effects started manifesting physically and I ended up in the ER. I wasn't feeling well the following week and tried work some days, and ended up having to take time off due to doctor instructions. I had 4 teams and one team I had returns to do. I came back the return wasn't finish but they had another associate do it. Then they gave me over 80 Review comments to fix it on multiple returns. It was the toxic team I tried getting off. Those days I was back, I started feeling ill again and having dark thoughts dealing with that team. I told all my teams I wasn't feeling well so I'm unable to focus and would try to get it sorted out. All my other teams understood and said they would get someone else to do the work in the meantime and to keep them updated. But this toxic team manager got aggressive and basically blamed me for the team not getting the return done by deadline and basically told me quit and that I was a burden on all my engagements. But he preface it, "feel better". He's always passive aggressive for no reason even in his review comments. So I'm resigning immediately the day I get back, it's just not worth it. I knew it would bad but not this bad. Why do people forget we're human at the end of the day ? These arbitrary titles mean nothing outside the workplace. [link] [comments]

Why do accountants make so little? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 10:02 AM PDT Just saw a job posting today for the job I had out of highschool that requires no education for about the same pay I make now as an accountant with 6 years of post secondary. Oh and they pay overtime! Kinda feels like a stab in the gut, why do we do this again? [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Jun 2021 04:19 PM PDT But, holy is it so damn difficult to just up and leave an hour early when I have nothing else to do, without everyone around me judging and asking why I'm leaving. In public I could leave at 2pm and work from home if I wanted to, no questions asked. But then I remember why I left. [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Jun 2021 08:21 PM PDT I am an analyst and I am looking to switch jobs. When I was hired at my current job, I hadn't graduated yet and I was supposed to complete my last class the first few months I was working. However I failed that class and never graduated. I still wrote on my resume that I had a degree completed in 2020. Now that I have gotten an offer for another job, they are going to do background checks and I don't know what to do at this point. Should I wait for them to find out and make up an excuse or do I tell them upfront? This new job is very important to me and it would be a huge pay increase. Should I begin by telling the recruiter who connected me? [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:46 PM PDT Hi, I'm a young junior accountant looking to move up in my field. I have three years of experience, one in public and two in private. I currently make $47,000 as a junior accountant in private accounting. Does anyone know what I could be offered at the staff accountant level? [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:10 PM PDT I'll be going through fall recruit this year and I'm interested in tax. I have no interest in audit. A lot of firms in my area (BC) have a "Direct to Tax" route or a "Direct to Audit" route, pre-approved positions. What exactly do these two mean? I'm looking into the direct to tax stuff, but there's no real details given regarding what exactly "direct to tax" means. As a side note, I'm also interested in compilation work and will need hours in that as well to get that license. Is that something I can expect to be doing in the tax route at some point or request to do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Jun 2021 08:47 PM PDT I just wanted to reach out to see if anyone has had experience with jobs at fund administration companies. Cultures seem fun and flexible but I somewhat get a public accounting culture/work situation vibe. Anyone have advice to fund accounting jobs? Roles I've talked to are Senior Fund accountant and Fund Controller. Both on the PE side. [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Jun 2021 02:38 PM PDT I have so many questions and concerns, but I don't know what to actually expect which is causing anxiety. Generally, am i somewhat "safe" from all the horror stories since I am NOT in big 4? Also, does a normal public firm only have crazy hours during tax season? Should i be less stressed the other parts of the year? [link] [comments] |
