Anyone have any experience opening their own business/ restaurant?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:36 AM PDT

    Hi. Throwaway here.

I've come across an opportunity, but I'm money illiterate and lack business acumen, but would still like to make a smart decision.

To start, my husband and I are 32 years old with only about 10k to our name. We don't have much bills and pay everything on time. We're not really struggling.

My husband is a chef. I'm a marketing professional. We recently had an investor who approached us as he wants to open a restaurant. My husband is quite known in our city due to his experience (worked at a Michelin star restaurant, blah blah) and he is an up and coming star chef.

When the topic of ownership came up during our meeting, the investor (basically just a rich dude- has no restaurant experience) stated that his previous restaurant deal fell through because the chef wanted 60-40 ownership and he thought that it was unfair because he would be putting up all the money. We're guessing he wants 50-50 ownership. He pays everything. We do all the work. My husband will manage the kitchen and I will do the marketing and other admin duties. Our concept only requires 300k up front, give or take. Is 50-50 a good deal? My spidey senses are saying they're not, BUT we are desperate to start our own business, and as we have no assets, a business loan may be tricky. To be honest, we haven't pursued that avenue.

What can we do to protect ourselves down the line? We are relatively young, but together have solid experience and we are afraid of being taken advantage of. We don't want to do all the work and give someone 50% of profits. Although honestly, we would do it, I suppose. I wanted to give ourselves some leverage and make sure we can make the most of this situation. I was thinking of filing an LLC and having the restaurant under husband and I. Is that even a good idea? Eventually, we would like to open more restaurants and also have CPG food products (that will be sold in the restaurant) in major grocery chains. Obviously we would like CPG profits for us. How can we separate the CPG sold in restaurant, if at all possible?

    Thanks in advance.

My dad is in serious trouble tax wise.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:35 PM PDT

Ok so basically, my dad owns a small pizzeria, and he got a loan from his friend to pay it off since it belonged to his friend. Long story short, he did something to get into the situation of owing 50k in taxes, and the big problem is that it needs to be paid now or else they'll take the house. My family has good income, both my parents bring in about 18k-20k a month, but they aren't budging in terms of not paying it within the next month or else. My dad has already consulted our representative so my family has no idea what to do, we've liquidated all our assets because the amount owed was more than 50k and thats the amount left that needs to be paid, is there anything we could possibly do?

Edit: many of you are saying its a scam which i pray it is but the thing is the accountants my dad went to apparently said he owed that amount in taxes? First thing tomorrow I will apply the feedback I got especially bringing up contacting a tax attorney

How do you get over weird and negative reviews?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:15 AM PDT

    Hi small business fam ^_^

Have you ever gotten weird reviews that are kind of negative?

So I run a home bakery based on IG, and surprisingly am having a lot of success recently. It's a lot of work being a one-woman show: admin, social media, accounting (I hate this part LOL), the actual baking, packaging, etc. Since starting in February, I've had nothing but amazing reviews and I'm so happy that my clients love their goodies.

I literally put my heart and soul into my side hustle and my baked goods, so I get very affected by one negative review. I know this is just constructive criticism (my client was very nice about it and I was being very open-minded), but I'm just super paranoid now with every new bake =(

As a small business owner, how do you get over weird/negative reviews? Thank you so much for your time! =)

How many hours do you work?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 03:47 PM PDT

How many hours do you guys work on your business? I am trying to choose between a 9-5 and my own business. People tell me having your own business and hard and that most people work in excess of 40 hours a week. I understand that I will have to pay more taxes, be responsible for my own health insurance, etc, and that I will have to be disciplined and work everyday. I understand that having a small business isn't easy, but I wonder if it is possible to make just an average amount like 50k working 40 hours a week? I know there must be ways to make a decent amount without working 24/7. I just want to have a healthy work/life balance.

    Starting a tutoring service

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:40 PM PDT

I have decided to try and pursue my passion of tutoring math for a living. I have tutored part time for many years, and want to see if I can start my own service to do it full time. I want to build a website which is user friendly, has a "whiteboard" functionality for teaching, can have a scheduling tool, payment accepting tool, etc. I have a lot of experience coding in Matlab, but have never coded in html but and very open to learning. What would you say my best bet on website builder is? I am thinking word press, but I want to make sure I make the right decision. Any input appreciated!

At what point ... how many times a day did you need to use one, before you bought a Thermal Label Printer?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 11:17 PM PDT

I guess I want to get it early. Lol. I'm sick of folding pages, copy and pasting labels etc. I've got a newer business online but it's grown so fast. But at $250 after all is said and done, to print addresses, small labels and shipping labels... I'm trying to figure out when the cost of ink and the saving of time is worth it. I know it's diff for everyone. But if you've got one, how many shipping labels were you printing per day when you got one?

    Random question; I know.

Ambassador/Collaboration requests are so out of hand

    Posted: 02 May 2021 04:58 PM PDT

I put it on every piece of social media we have, on multiple parts of our website, but nothing helps. I get several requests weekly from random people asking for the same thing: free shit for "advertising."

Recently I updated our IG profile because someone messaged asking about a "collaboration" & when I pointed out our profile says "no ambassadors" she said it wasn't the same. I asked her to explain the difference & of course, it's the same thing.

Just now I got approached asking if I'm looking for "sponsors" & when I pointed it out again, the person said it was different, but it's not.

I can't keep up with the amount of ridiculous things people call themselves trying to get free shit, thinking they're providing ME with a service. I don't want to be rude but it gets so exhausting because a canned response doesn't always work & people get SO angry when you turn them down even politely.

Sorry for a bit of a rant, it just seems like nothing preventative works because everyone thinks their situation is different. Other than losing your mind on people, how do you handle it when people skip over your policies & email you anyway?

When doing B2B work, how do you show that on a portfolio?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:46 PM PDT

I own my own LLC and do software work for clients, but this could also apply to other industries. I'm just getting started and would eventually like to have a sort of portfolio section on my website showing work that I've done. Is it kosher to just say whatever I want, or is it important to get approval from the companies I've done work with?

I'm trying to get into the mindset as a business owner that I don't need to ask anyone anything and that I call the shots now but I'd also like to tread carefully and not burn bridges. Do I just do it, and if they find out and complain I can talk with them and remove it if necessary?

I wouldn't go into any real details, just "I helped x company with x solution" to give myself credibility. I typically am in favor of "it's better to ask forgiveness than permission", hoping it doesn't burn me here.

    HELP-taking over a small business

    Posted: 02 May 2021 03:12 PM PDT

Long story short- I've worked at this local pizza restaurant since high school/college and the owner is ready to get out of the business and asked me if I wanted it. The owner cannot sell since he's going through a divorce but is willing to write up a contract until everything is finalized. I will be doing all the work and he will collect a certain % per month. That being said, what do you think a fair amount of % would be to split? What type of business partnership would I need or do I even need one?

    Thank you

    Food Truck Ideas

    Posted: 02 May 2021 08:20 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm looking into starting a side business in the food truck sector and I am wondering if anybody here has any experience with this.

I am looking for any suggestions regarding sourcing a trailer/truck that I can modify for this. Has anybody here dealt with any reputable companies they would recommend or is there another suggestion regarding this?

We can use a trailer and tow the trailer with vehicles we currently own.

Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

The food service part is not an issue and we are covered on that part. We are mainly looking for tips on sourcing the vehicle itself.

    'Your Murder' or 'VIP Mystery'?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:38 PM PDT

I've been producing murder mystery party games for several years. But I wanted to rebrand the company to focus on offering bespoke games. Polls had two clear winners on a new name:

    A) Your Murder (41 votes)

    B) VIP Mystery (35 votes)

What do you think is better?

'Your Murder' better catches attention, and indicates the product is bespoke. But I'm worried it would limit the company to the niche of bespoke murder mysteries, and having 'murder' in the name means I'll never be able to fulfil my dream of partnering with family friendly IP's like Cluedo has done.

What are we doing wrong? Why don't we see conversions?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:08 AM PDT

So we recently started a Skin Care & Wellness enterprise named Tamra Botanicals. We already have a website done on Shopify and people seem to be loving what we do on social media but conversions are not happening. We recently ran some conversion campaigns on Facebook and Instagram which did drive 2-3 conversions but the cost per conversion is coming out to be almost double of the price tag we are selling on. And Instagram traffic campaigns are driving enough traffic on our page but we don't see any conversion happening through the SHOP NOW button. I've attached the link of our website and Instagram both below and any help I get from here would be much appreciated.

I'm establishing an LLC for a 3d print farm and I would like to know if I can use the LLC for other businesses not related to that?

As stated in the title I'm planning on incorporating a 3d print farm however I also want to start up a business unrelated to that in the near future. Would I need to incorporate the other business separately or can I use a DBA under the umbrella of the LLC. If this is not the right sub for this please could anyone direct me to another sub that could assist.

How am I supposed to figure out how much money/ financing I need for my small business?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:40 PM PDT

I'm in the process of starting my own business, a luxury dog kennel. I'm working with my county's SBDC and have been assigned an advisor who is really helpful, but I would like to get some more advice from Reddit and people who have gone through this personally as well.

So I've literally done nothing besides get an EIN, and feasibility plan and working on my business plan.

I'm going to contact a CPA or tax advisor or attorney on Monday tomorrow to figure out if we want to file as an S Corp or leave it as is.

But now my question is..... okay so what now? I know I need to get a business banking account, but should I wait until I'm ready to get a loan and then bank w the bank that I get a loan from? Or does that not really matter? I know I need to set up sales tax, I know I need to get several insurances for my business... I may not get a loan from a bank - so would that affect where I bank?

But I don't even know how to figure out how much it's going to cost me to get it off the ground - INCLUDING construction which is what will take up the most money.

How am I supposed to how much everything is going to cost: if I don't know how much construction costs and how do I find out how much construction is gonna cost if I don't have any blueprints, and how am I gonna get blueprints/ any type of construction drawing if I don't have a lease / know the floor plan of the potential business location??? And how can I even seriously consider locations if I don't have any financing yet??

And HOW am I supposed to even know just HOW much financing/ loans I need if I don't even have any construction costs estimate Bc I don't have a floor plan and thus I can't draw up any construction plans???

Like I'm so confused? I can figure out base costs of supplies/ kennels but then I have to think about: installation costs, construction costs bc who knows what the potential building looks like inside, etc.

What am I supposed to do? What are my next steps? Get financing despite not knowing how much it's gonna cost? I estimate it'll be possibly around 500k based on research from what it would cost to open up a franchise of a similar concept w/ luxury dog daycare / boarding (they've got their prices broken down on their franchising page so I based it on that), but actual costs? Who knows...

    A question about realtors

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:58 PM PDT

First post, longtime lurker. I'm in the very early stages of putting together a business. Without going into too much detail on what that business may be I had some questions in regard to commercial real estate agents. Recently I've been viewing locations and seeking out realtors, casting a fairly wide net kinda thing. I agreed to meet with a realtor recently for a sit down to discuss my needs. He sent an email after our phone conversation confirming our appointment but also through in one of his associates would be attending the meeting. What was more odd is that this "associate" who my realtor is doing "shadowing" training him in creeped on my LinkedIn. Weird cause me and this "associate" had never spoken before and why would someone who's being trained even feel compelled to look me up. I mean, the agent who I'd spoken to never even bothered to do so. Upon further investigation of this "associate" (creeped back on his LinkedIn) happens to be a former owner of several businesses, including things conceptually similar in nature to my business idea, though only in a bar/restaurant capacity, not in the other things I'm doing. My question is, should I be worried these guys are trying to steal my idea? I just get a really weird feeling about the whole situation. The agent seemed awfully eager to know details, which I explained as vaguely as I could. I'm trying to hold my cards to my chest here as this concept could be worth a fortune if executed properly and I know how everyone is thirsty for "the next big thing". Am I overreacting? Has anyone heard of realtors trying to snatch ideas? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Where to find Boxes for Chilled Home Delivery

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:54 PM PDT

    Hello!

Does anyone know what affordable solutions there are for insulated cardboard boxes?

I run a small yogurt business in Canada and am looking to do some home deliveries. With the warming weather I need to make sure they arrive cold and insulated. Looking at u-line, some of their options are $3+ per insulation (without box), so I'm hoping there's something cheaper! The boxes that the home delivery kits like HelloFresh arrive in seem to come to mind, but I haven't been able to find out where they come from or the cost.

    Would love some advice here!

    Logo Artists

    Posted: 02 May 2021 04:51 PM PDT

Does anyone know where to hire a good logo designer? The available budget is between $700-$500.

The next part is just extra information. Don't have to read it.

My business partner and I have $4000 to start a simple drop-shipping business off of Amazon FBA and Shopify. Our niche has very few competitors but extremely high sales. After doing the math, we should have around $1100-$900 leftover from the business startup fees, amazon fees, shipping, inventory, Shopify, etc. Should we invest the rest into a good logo or keep some cash spare? Hence the $700-$500 budget.

I'm not keen on "cheap Fiverr" logo artists before anyone recommends them. I got recommended to a good $5 artist that used stock images and copied designs. Tried it. Refunded it. I'd rather hire a professional in the US if possible.

Restaurant Revitalization Grant via SquarePOS when sales tax is included in gross sales?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 02:09 PM PDT

We use Square Register and are eligible to apply for this grant through them, but like most bars here we include the sales tax in the price of our drinks to make an even amount and not deal with change on busy nights. So the "gross sales" numbers that Square has do not match the actual gross sales we report to the state for sales tax or to the IRS, where we use the same number that we use for the state instead of separating out the "sales tax included," just so everything matches up nicely, as I thought state and federal gross sales should always match up on various forms. Now I'm realizing this will probably make it difficult to apply for this grant. We have not submitted our 2020 taxes yet as they are so bloody complicated last year and all the local accountants are booked up through June, so we'll have to use "sales reports" for 2020. But Square only gives the option for a spreadsheet export for the year, not a pdf. And their 1099 they give us only lists CREDIT CARD sales, not the cash sales that also get rung into Square. Anyone else having a similar issue?
