Is it bad to start an LLC even if you’re not going to work towards it much at all during the foreseeable future?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 04:01 AM PDT

Hey everyone, some background about myself. I'm a software engineer that has an idea for a new suite of video games that I'd like to develop. I'm interested in starting an LLC, as a small software development studio. Given my current demanding career and pursuit into higher education, I don't see myself working much on my project, but I'd still like to make it official and have the business ready to hit the road when I'm ready to as well. Is there anything wrong with just starting the LLC, in Michigan, and just holding the business on the side until I'm ready to work towards it?

Any small businesses look at hybrid office or work from home structures?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:17 AM PDT

It seems that there will be a lot of workers asking for hybrid office or work from home structures upon returning to work. This could potentially have a major impact on small businesses. I'm curious to hear from small businesses about the challenges that you are facing with this.

    • How are you thinking about it?
    • Are you evaluating multiple possibilities?
    • What are the possibilities you are considering? ( i.e., hybrid model, distributed workforce, back to normal with everyone in the office)
    • How do you look at the financials of the situation make sure you've covered all aspects?
    • Are there any articles or materials that you've found helpful?

Turning Down Future Jobs with Existing Customer

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:55 PM PDT

I'm looking for suggestions on how to delicately turn down future jobs with a customer whom I have some personal ties to. I'm a contractor and I had the opportunity to perform a job for the parents of a good friend of mine which has turned into a nightmare that consumes most of my time and prevents me from attending to other customers. Even though the job will be finished just fine, I do not wish to continue doing any business with them. However, they had previously asked me about doing additional work and I have already received calls from their family members and a friend of theirs. The last thing I want is a customer that's angry because I won't work with them, but I absolutely can't continue working with this customer. Do I just come straight with them and tell them why we can't work together or do I just keep putting them off until they give up? What about referrals? It'll be pretty obvious that I'm blowing them off if I give them an excuse and then start working on their buddy's house. Do I have to turn down all those potential jobs as well? Anybody deal with this type of situation before? How did it turn out?

Can you 'give' a % of your LLC business to someone who you're partnering with?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:49 PM PDT

    (Washington state, USA)

I own my own LLC, though I was going to dissolve it because it was more of a side-hustle and I didn't have time to keep it going.

However, I recently brought someone on at their request, and agreed to give him 30% of the company if he can make it profitable, and I would pay him in commission as a contractor as he grows it, if that's what he wants to do.

He has worked at it and turned it into a profitable business, and running it is his full-time job now. Per our agreement, I want to sign 30% ownership over to him.

Obviously, I need an attorney to put the paperwork together. Do I just e-mail a business attorney or contract attorney and tell them I need to give 30% of my company to someone? I have no idea how to go about this.

    Thanks for any input.

Edit: We do not have an operating agreement, which is something we need to rectify. I'm just not sure how to lump that in with all this.

Profitable alternatives to pimping myself out in the digital marketing arena?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 06:01 AM PDT

    tl;dr:

I'm looking for a profitable direction in the field of paid advertising and marketing in general as an alternative to managing clients.

    Background:

Been in the digital sphere quite a while, worked for an ad agency in the past, have a deep understanding & experience in hands-on campaign management (mainly Facebook/Google Ads), Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics - from strategy to implementation and documentation, as well as reporting using Google Data Studio etc.

    Currently I'm freelancing.

    Problem:

This market has become insanely commoditized, and people are willing to pay dimes for work that is complex, never-ending, and requires 100% devotion to get results. Clients don't realize that this "commodity" is one of the most important aspects of their business since it equals sales.

    Rant:

    I'm fine with selling.

But I'm tired of trying to convince people to pay what I deserve.

I know, for instance, that, if I had my own "core" business (say... remodeling) and I would implement the knowledge and experience on my own business, it would skyrocket.

But trying to make a business out of selling marketing as the main service is what feels to me like a waste of my skillset. A never ending cycle of pimping myself out. A never ending race to the bottom.

    Question:

What are some interesting directions I should look at for increasing my income while utilizing myself to the fullest?

Business secrets are the most precious secrets. I don't expect you to share it with me.

But some direction would be appreciated!

    Trouble Retaining Staff

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:41 PM PDT

I am in So Cal. We do live honey bee removal. I hire folks as contractors. They use all their own equipment, and get 50% commission. We charge $260 hourly. With revisits, drive time, and all it averages somewhere between $50-100 an hour. I also pay bonuses if folks train. Most of my guys make $30-50k working the bee season, which is primarily March-June.

Then we start the Christmas season. We hang Christmas lights. Season lasts from Oct-Jan. Guys usually make an additional $10-30k.

Techs come and go, which is a bummer, but its bees. It's hot and difficult. Most of the folks that join had an under $20 hourly job, and they are SO excited when they start. Then around 2-6 months later they usually start demanding increases in pay, and ultimately quit.

My best guy makes a lot. I asked him to come and do a light job. Pay was $700 for around 6 hours of work. Client downsized the job, so it was only around $500 for 5 ish hours. He was so frustrated he quit on the spot.

What do you do to help retention? It isn't pay. I know the job is difficult, but overall I feel like getting off your butt, working 3 hours, and taking home $390 is pretty neat, with occasional bonuses thrown in, but it just doesn't cut it. Do I raise prices to try and keep guys on staff? Do I just start over?

One of my biggest issues is that I recently became a licensed Realtor. It pays a lot more than the bees and lights do, so I haven't been as involved as I used to. Not sure if I will just walk on the entire thing or not because of the staffing issues. Company grosses around $400k a year, and I usually take home $70k. I really don't want to walk away from it, but I just can't keep folks, and I can't afford to keep training new staff every 6 months.

Opportunity to Lease Business, Would Really Like a Partner

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:24 PM PDT

How do I look for prospective business partners?
I'm in Orlando, and I am getting an amazing deal on leasing a business with potential but I feel like there is more work than I can do alone. There used to be 3 employees on top of the owner, but now it's just me and one very very old dude (no offence my elderly friends), and the owner leaves to go home as soon as I show up (about 7am). I feel like I'm already doing just about everything already. He's offering me to buy it from him and isn't very willing to be a mentor after the fact. Sure, I can hire other employees, but I'm interested in someone who might have a shared passion to improving this thing. It's a niche business that is pretty consistent, but I want to see it grow and would really like a partner who can check my ideas and offer their own.

Struggling to rent shops in a small Mall

    Posted: 09 May 2021 02:32 PM PDT

Hello, I am the owner of a small shopping center in Marrakech, Morocco. The center is still being built, but we are already trying to rent the shops. The problem is that our main commercial argument is that we are in the most touristic area of the city, and since it's been almost 18 months without any tourists, nobody is willing to take that risk and rent. I already reduced the prices, and we signed 2 people (still have 20 to go) and I don't wanna reduce the prices more. What should I do ?

    Weebly and Instagram Shopping

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:26 AM PDT

So anyone with a weebly shop set up, is it actually possible to do Instagram shopping or Facebook shopping? I can't find a straight answer from the forums, weebly doesn't talk about it directly but square online does. Since it looks like square bought weebly… is it actually possible on, say the $6 or 12 a month weebly subscription to have Instagram/Facebook shopping?

Anyone ever experience payroll company NOT remitting taxes?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 01:59 PM PDT

Long story short: my wife and I are business partners and in January transitioned to S-Corp status from LLC, and had to put ourselves on payroll for the first time. We onboarded with a payroll provider (fairly large and supposedly reputable too) and found out they took money out of our account for taxes (to the tune of $4,000) but these funds were not actually remitted to the government agencies.

I'm working on getting this sorted with them (also with support from my CPA firm who had recommended them to us, and are no longer recommending them out based on this experience). It's been dragging for about 2 weeks now since I discovered this and I fear I'm going to be subject to fines as a result.

Needless to say, I am moving to another provider but has anyone here experienced anything similar and what was your course of action? I'm steps away from getting a lawyer though frankly hesitant there as I've been f'd like many through the pandemic and now feeling pretty f'd by this company too.

What should my spouse be making? CFO of a construction company

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:38 AM PDT

My spouse helped start a construction startup 3 years ago as the CFO. They've gone from 10-15 employees the first year to about 85 now. They did about 40 million dollars in gross revenue in 2020 and show a net profit of about 1.5 million dollars. For such a short history, the company is doing extremely well. The owner does come from a wealthy family and so they don't have some of the same hang ups that many startups might have.

My spouse was basically running everything from internal accounting/billing to payroll to HR alone in the beginning. now has a small staff helping with some of these more monotonous duties.

They're currently implementing a brand new industry specific accounting software program to move away from QuickBooks which they have quickly outgrown. This has caused to have to work about 80 hours a week for several months but that should be over soon hopefully.

This is located in a MCL medium sized Midwestern city.

They have very good benefits and thus far has been getting 5% bonuses each year as well as 5% annuall raises. Also is provided a company vehicle to commute.

We are just wondering what kind of annual salary a position like this should expect. My spouse loves The position and is comfortable with the fact that it's a newer business and needs to try and keep costs down but now that things are looking great, just wondering what a reasonable expectation should be Now and going forward as far as salary goes

Edited to add that my spouse is highly organized and extremely talented as well as one of the most well-liked people you will ever find. Is extremely bright and social. Everybody truly loves my spouse. I've always thought my spouse should be running a large company making huge money but that really never interested them.

But this is a job my spouse absolutely loves. The owner and all of the key employees know how lucky they are that my spouse works for them and treat My spouse extremely well.

Thanks in advance for any input

    Laundry business advice

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:06 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm thinking of starting a washer/dryer business for multi family and apartment building property owners. Essentially I would own the machines, manage collections and provide maintenance. All the stress goes away for the PO and they just receive a check bi-weekly. Simple enough right? Personally this is my first venture and completely new to running my own business. I've looked into loans, initial costs, storage, insurance, started a business plan and looked into starting my LLC.
I know it will require a lot of work to find possible developers to work with me and I believe can handle that but I feel like it all sounds too simple (given it's just household appliances) but I feel like I'm missing something. Any advice on things I could be forgetting about, or how to strategize/market, retain clients would be appreciated!

Hello, thinking about starting a hotdog cart/class 2 food truck. How do I get starting capital and what are the essentials I need to start up?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:49 AM PDT

Hello, in the Tampa, FL area and intend to cater to a niche market of maintenance workers (where I currently work), we only get half hour break and all food is pretty far away. So I figured park in the parking lot and sell snacks/hotdogs and such. Just wondering what licenses/permissions I need and how to get starting money. Any links to YouTube/your own experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Any examples of successful small SaaS startups?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:07 AM PDT

Making a successful small startup may be a great challenge. but there are a few small SaaS startups that have overcome this challenge. Enquiring about the present environment and knowing the current market structure and understanding the demands of your targeted customers may be the key to a successful SaaS startup. Doing initial research will also help you prevent making mistakes that others have already made.

Top 3 SaaS startups of 2021

Although it's quite a tough job to pick the most successful SaaS startups, the list of top five startups is chosen to keep in mind some most vital points like innovativeness, growth rate, and future perspective of the business.

    CoSchedule

The SaaS company was founded in the year 2014 that has now gained over 9000 clients around the globe. The company has its satisfied customers spread over more than 100 countries. The company is also considered to be the fastest-growing company in North Dakota.

    Setapp

Developed in 2017, Setapp packs more than 140 apps for Mac. These apps are like MindNote, Ulysses, Any Trans, etc. At the present date, the company has more than 30,000 paid customers all over the world. Setapp offers a subscription service at just $9.99 to get access to all its apps.

    How to start SaaS

Starting a SaaS ( software as a service ) company can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. As many entrepreneurs want to start a SaaS, the competition in the field is tough too. But with some pro tips, you can always stay ahead of others. With the few pro tips mentioned below, you can plan and grow a successful SaaS company.

    1. Pen down a lean plan

The first thing you must do to start a SaaS company is to make up a lean plan. If you are testing new ideas constantly then making a lean plan can be the best way to proceed in your business planning. The points that you must cover in the plan are, strategy, tactics, business model, schedule, etc.

    1. Know more about the customer acquisition and pricing models

It is recommended to make a subscription model where your customers can pay monthly or annually instead of paying once for lifetime use. It increases the lifetime value of each customer. Now after you have decided about your pricing model, find the right price that your targeted customers are willing to pay. When you are a startup SaaS company, your main goal should be to gain maximum customers instead of maximum profit. So even if your services are better than others you should be ok with offering them at a low price.

Can my endeavor be considered a business?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:01 AM PDT

I'm an engineer by trade and a few months ago I was let go from my job. I'm taking some time off before I go back to a traditional job and in the meantime, I've been conducting research and development for a device I've been wanting to make for a while. Honestly, I'm not sure what my endgoal is in regards to patenting it and selling it as a product. For now, I just want to develop a prototype and then go from there. Anyway, for tax purposes, can I consider this endeavor a business and have the equipment I buy for the development be considered a business expense? Thanks!

What is SEO and how does it work ?

Search engine optimization (SEO) has been truly necessary and broadly utilized over the most recent couple of years, despite the fact that it has been around for quite a while. With the new improvement instruments used to make hefty sites in Java, Flash, and pictures, you should have something that search engines can learn. On the off chance that search engines can't understand content, they won't list you. On the off chance that your site can't be recognized, it won't be accessible when individuals search for you on Google, Yahoo, MSN, or somewhere else. . This article will diagram what SEO, how it works, and other unlawful SEO strategies you ought to stay away from.

Luxury Consignment Store Owner - resellers license?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 03:40 PM PDT

Hey All! So excited to meet everyone!I own a luxury consignment store @ Working Girls Boutique on instagram, and I was wondering if anyone from Ontario Canada has heard of a "resellers license"? I was told there are Resellers licenses or permits which allows you to purchase pieces outside of Canada without paying import duties. In fact, I was speaking with a company that won't sell to you unless you have proof of this license. I can't seem to find anything online in Ontario, I was wondering if anyone in Ontario has heard of this or something similar? TIA xoxo

US Business co-owned between American and Canadian

    Posted: 09 May 2021 06:22 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am looking at potentially pursuing a business opportunity in the US (as a Canadian). I (Canadian living in Canada) have a potential business partner (who is American living in the US), and we may want to start a business together.

I was hoping to get some guidance on what additional tax and legal considerations have to be considered (that would not arise had the owners of the business been only American residents).

I realize this is somewhat vague and that more information may be needed. So feel free to ask more if more information is needed to help with this.

I'm not looking for any final answers and understand that ultimately I'd have to consult an accountant and lawyer on our specific situation, but I just want to be armed with some of the major relevant considerations up front.

    Thanks!

Im trying to plan out a smaller space that feels slightly rustic, organic and i guess more interesting than the basic boring stuff. Of course, im also trying to stay mid range on price (no custom build). Ideas of places to look?

Owning an overseas company in the uk,that operates in Italy, of which I don't perceive income.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 06:18 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I was discussing with my family the hypothesis of shifting ownership of a company my parents run in Italy, to me. I am resident in the UK and regularly employed as a software engineer and i perceive a regular income.

I was wondering if i would be exposed to any specific tax by owning a company that operates abroad, considering that i wouldn't be perceiving any income from it. I also wanted to ask if there is any specific requirements in terms of needing an official physical location to which the company needs to reside at, or any other requirements that i might be missing or not considering.

On top of the above-mentioned questions, if anybody has any further details to provide, please do so.

If this post doesn't belong here, i will promptly remove it but, I'd highly appreciate recommendations about other communities that might prove more appropriate for this specific problem.

Edit: Thank you everyone, I'll look into getting some professional help or just outright refuse the deal. Sounded shady from the start anyway and I'd very much rather avoid getting attention from the authorities
