The idea that AI systems are somehow neutral arbiters that won't end up with prejudice is so naïve that it's hard to take it seriously.

Driving to Mexico w/ my car, living there for couple months.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:09 PM PDT

Hello, I plan to drive to Mexico in the winter and plan on living there for a couple months, possibly six months but most likely less (yes I'm aware about the six month temporary permit limit). I have state farm right now, and have a great rate for my age group, ( I'm 23/M and pay $120/month full coverage), I should mention, I live in NY incase the rules are different for my state. I would like to either temporarily suspend my policy, or somehow decrease the cost while I'm living in mexico, since I'm assuming it will be useless while I'm there, and I'll have to purchase Mexican car insurance anyways. I just want to keep my current rate that I have, without having to spend the $120/m while I'm in mexico. Any advice?

Smoke/water damage during move, what’s my next step?

    Posted: 28 May 2021 04:11 AM PDT

Hey all, wall of text incoming! I recently did a huge move and the company doing my move had one of their warehouses catch on fire. None of my stuff was burned but when they opened the containers for delivery today, I instantly was overwhelmed with this smell of smoke and the containers showed cleared evidence of smoke damage inside and out. In addition, a few containers still had water saturation on the paper and containers when they opened them. I didn't accept delivery of any items (except one container which was stored away from the rest of them, and had them sent back to the warehouse until we figure out what to do.

What are my options? What is my next step? Someone mentioned hiring a public adjuster to help but they sound pricey and I haven't read such great things online about them.

Edit: this happened in Guam during a military PCS.

    Hail damage

    Posted: 28 May 2021 03:34 AM PDT

    Hello,

I believe the answer is no ..but I just wanted to know that if you moved into a home that has an old roof that occurred prior hail damage the year before you bought it would your insurance policy cover replacing the roof due to the prior damage or does it need to of occurred whilst you owned the home? We recently noticed a leak through the roof when it rains but I feel there may be past damage from hail as the roof is 20+ years old

Wrong address on business location, claim denied. (US)

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:59 AM PDT

My wife owns a bakery in King Country Washington (US) and we have the bakery insured. We have had the same insurance for 5 years and never made a claim.

Someone broke a large window and so I told my insurance about it.

They came back and said that the location was wrong (it was our house location were we receive mail and we use as the official business address) and so they could not honour the address.

When we filled out the paperwork we gave them the lease agreement and photos. Maybe we filled out something wrong on the paperwork I don't know but they had enough information back then to validate this.

So for 5 years we have been insuring a home we own and already have home insurance on.

    1) Are we legally able to get them to honour the claim?

    2) If not are we able to have them refund the total insurance we have paid over the years?

Car Accident, Insurance - Did I Screw Myself?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:17 PM PDT

We bought a new car about 3 months ago (traded in an old one in the process). A couple of days ago my wife and kids were in a car accident. Everyone was okay apart from some whiplash, thankfully, but the car was seriously damaged. The other driver was at fault, and admitted this to the police officer. He has insurance. We do not live in a no-fault state.

The problem: I could have sworn that I logged into the insurance website and switched out the vehicles. But it turns out I didn't.

I called the insurance company and they added the vehicle but back-dated it by 30 days. I thought that would be it, but later that day the claim examiner said that in order to address this "coverage issue," I also needed to send the bill of sale and complete a recorded statement where they asked me a bunch of questions about the vehicle purchase. She said she needed to review my statement with her supervisor, and that she would follow up with me today to confirm how to move forward. She didn't end up calling and now I am more and more anxious.

Am I basically screwed (i.e. no coverage, car totaled, still have to pay off the loan)? Should I be contacting the other driver's insurance company myself, or should I wait for my insurance company to tell me the outcome of my coverage issue?

I feel lost in all this and don't know how to move forward... any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Someone used my health insurance to get the vaccine

    Posted: 27 May 2021 04:35 PM PDT

I just got mail in today about a claim from a month ago and when I messaged my health care provider they said they received it from a CVS in Louisiana. The issue is I haven't done anything & I live in SoCal. Is this something I should be worried about? Is this normal? Have people accidentally sent a claim to the wrong account (esp since I live in a different state)?

Assaulted with a vehicle while active duty military.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 05:21 PM PDT

Hey all, was looking to get some clear guidance and advice here.

Background info: Last week I was involved in a incident where another driver overtook me in oncoming lanes then boxed my vehicle in. After my vehicle was stopped him and his passenger verbally threatened me and wanted to fight (classic road rage) etc. Upon trying to drive away to de-escalate the situation the driver then decided to intentionally ram the side of my vehicle with his and then proceeded to flee the scene. This was all recorded on front and rear dash cam of my vehicle. Immediately after he started to flee I called the police and they came out to take a report and view my footage. They ran his plate and decided to go to the address listed that was only 4 blocks away. After he was identified he was charged with Assault with a deadly weapon (felony) and Hit and Run.

The day after I woke up in pain and got checked out by base medical since I'm active duty military. Had X-rays and test done and was told I have a "L5 pars defect with grade 1 spondylolisthesis L5 on S1" and that the accident made it worse to the point where I'm in physical pain and why my sciatica nerve is causing pain in my lower back and right leg. I'm also currently seeing mental health for anxiety from the incident. This all happened a day before I was on leave (approved vacation) where I was suppose to drive across the country.

With myself being active duty I have full healthcare. But with that being said I wouldn't be covered for future treatment when I'm out of the military (less than 6 months) as well as cost for damages and depreciation of my vehicle etc. Would this be something that would probably be worth getting a attorney for and try to get compensation for? If so for things like this what kind of results could come from it? (Like is it worth it) And if so is my lost of vacation days (leave) something I'd be able to ask for compensation for? Will his insurance still cover him even though he is getting charged with a felony?

Sorry for the long post and tons of questions, just stressed and lost about what to do. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    EDIT: This happened in CA.

    Am I being upcoded?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:32 PM PDT

I apologize for the length, this is all kind of a mess. I live in MN and recently went to the doctor for a Pap smear, which is supposed to be covered by my health insurance because it's preventative care. I got a bill for nearly $500. I saw multiple charges on there for the Pap smear, a birth control consult, and a new patient charge. When I called the billing office I was told that I have to pay for the Pap smear because I went to my obgyn instead of my primary doctor so it would be billed as an office visit instead of the covered preventative care?

As for the birth control consult, I just asked my obgyn if there was any way she could look and see when my IUD expires as I lost my card, I wasn't looking to change birth control or have it removed, can this really be charged as a consult? The new patient charge was bs as well, the same obgyn I saw for my Pap smear is the one I saw less than 3 years ago for my IUD insertion. When I called the billing office they removed the new patient charge, but this all just seems like upcoding to me? I looked over my insurance coverage and I don't see anything about having to go to my primary doctor for the Pap smear, just that it has to be an in network provider.

My company demands a physical examination before I can start a new (dream!) job. Am I required to disclose to the physician that I am bipolar? Should I do so, will this information be available to other companies that I might work for in the future?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 04:37 PM PDT

I have been diagnosed with bipolar (II) in late 2017. I've recently landed an absolute dream job, but before I start I am required to undergo a physical examination, where I was asked to provide documentation regarding any chronic illnesses I might have.

I thought about hiding my diagnosis, but the check-up will be performed under a medical insurance provider which I'll be covered by once I start my new job, and which I fully intend to use for my future psychiatric appointments. I don't know anything about confidentiality, but I'm guessing that the diagnosis would come to light pretty soon even if I tried to hide it at first?

I am currently residing in Poland, but plan to move to the US with my partner in a couple of years, and I'm worried about how my diagnosis might impact my career.

Question about out of state car insurance.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 09:32 PM PDT

So I am from Minnesota and currently stationed in California (I'm in the military) for the next few years, once my contract ends I will be moving back. I plan on buying a car when I am in California and I was wondering if I was able to purchase the car here but get insure/register the car in Minnesota. I will not be driving the car back to Minnesota until a few years after the purchase. Could I do this and if so what does the process look like?

Need Advice - Not at fault Car accident (NY) At fault limit exceeded.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 09:30 AM PDT

    Hello fellow redditors,

I'm looking to get advice from anyone on what I can or should do. I learned my lesson and will get collision in the future, but this is what's going on. Sorry if this is all over the place but Its just been stressing me out.

    I'm driver (1)

Guy who ran stop sign (2)

    Parked vehicle (3)

I (1) was involved in a car accident on 4/6, other driver(2) ran a stop sign and I ended up hitting him and then he hit a parked car(3), so 3 vehicles involved.

1 has a dashcam which proved 2 was at fault, me and him both insured by Geico.

Parked vehicle is insured by progressive and at first was claiming against driver 2 but after finding out that 3 policy is going to be exceeded is now filing through his own insurance.

Geico said (2) is 100% at fault, I only have liability so I will be claiming against his policy. I believe his limit might only be 25k.

The accident was on 4/6 so its almost been 2 months, there have been many, many delays. My vehicle is totaled, all airbags went off and I was told it had to be approved through multiple departments. Driver (3)'s vehicle is also supposedly totaled, even though the damages didn't look severe. At first he was going to claim against (2) but I think he find out that (2)'s policy is going to be exceeded, so he is filing through his own (Progressive). And they have been supposedly inspecting or valuing his car for the last 2 weeks. Driver (2) Geico agent isn't the most helpful in keeping me up to date, I've had to reach out to him every time and he said its going to be another couple of weeks, I don't know if he is purposely being slow, or he just isn't proactively working on this claim or if progressive is really taking this long.

My car was valued at around 23k and was told I would be receiving around 12-14k because (2) doesn't have enough coverage.

Does anyone know what my options are now or how this would work? Is there anything I can do to speed up this process as its been almost 2 months without a car. I haven't gotten a rental aswell because the insurance agent told me not to get one since (2) doesn't have enough coverage to pay me back for it.

Also if I'm only going to be receiving 12k,& I'm not accepting that offer, would my only other option be to sue the driver at fault?

I was told different things by different Geico employees.

One said I would receive the highest possible settlement dollar amount from Geico, a check for (17k) and keep my car to sell to a salvage yard for around (6k) and that would be how they're going to get me my 23k.

Another said I would only receive an offer for (16k) and then the salvaged car is worth 6k so I would get a check for 10k and another for 6k when the salvage yard picks it up. And I wouldn't get near the 23k

oh yea one more question is it possible if driver 3 files through his own insurance, gets a check for the totaled amount from his own insurance, and ends up not claiming it against driver 2. Will the policy limit not be exceeded then and I would be able to get my full amount?

again, I apologize if this is super all over the place. let me know if any more info is needed

and if you have any advice I really appreciate it.

    Umbrella Policy

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:42 AM PDT

I own a home worth around half a million and I'm looking into whether I should obtain an umbrella policy. My current insurance carrier is quoting me 990 dollars for 6 months. I would be provided with 1 million protection. I live in Los Ángeles CA.

    1. Is 990 dollars too high?
    2. Is it worth it, In your opinion to even get an umbrella policy?

Is there an opportunity in insurance as a technical cyber liability agent?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:42 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone!

I live in Missouri (if that makes a difference), and have spent the past 8 years in IT. I am currently working an IT job mainly in security but as silly as it may sound, I feel like insurance is a really great fit for me, based off conversations I've had with people in the industry and from everything I read about best character traits for this field.

I'm trying to figure where my fit would be - is it a possibility to be an insurance agent that specializes in cyber liability insurance? I feel that I know the technical side very well and think that could be a great benefit. I know the sector is growing, so I wanted to ask for feedback - do you think this is worth pursuing? Is it worth pushing for this specific niche, or am I just daydreaming about an opportunity? Would agencies take someone on in this role?

I've never owned a car in this country. I already know my Insurance will be really expensive. What is the best way to shop around? [NY]

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:39 PM PDT

Are the Auto-Quotes that you realize in the insurance companies websites any reliable?

How much it can be reduced from one model of a car to another.

I don't know if I'm wrong. But it seems that one needs to get the car first in order for then eventually getting the insurance. But if I can't afford the insurance, then it'll be pointless to get the car.

I don't know if any of you guys can give me some guidance with that first car purchase.

    Metlife short term disability [MA]

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:16 PM PDT

So I was involved in a car accident. Needed to be out of work. Employer uses metlife as their insurer. Massachusetts now has paid medical leave. So they required documentation from my doctor. My doctor faxed that in. Hadn't been received, stating they needed the claim number on it. I tell the doctors office that. They resend it with the claim number. Call metlife again. Nope. Still not there. Tell my doctors office to email it. I call again. Still not there. Idk wtf is going on. I need disability because I'm currently unable to do my job. When I asked for a supervisor multiple times, no one calls me back. When I called today, they stated they called me at x:xx o clock. I check my call logs. No the fuck they didn't. Anyone ever dealt with this?

Dumb question about plan year [Eye Insurance]

Should I try to negotiate with my Car insurance company?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:11 PM PDT

Last week I got into an accident where a person ran a stop sign and I hit them. Insurance has claimed my vehicle is a total loss and is offering me $1,300 for it. The problem is is that when I look at Kelly Blue Book value of the worse version of my vehicle (mine is the performance edition vs the normal) it gives me a range of $3,500-4,500. In my area dealers are selling the normal version of my car for $3,000-5,000. There was some damage prior to the accident such as a passengers side quarter panel being dented and some scrapes on both passenger side doors, but the car was only of the most commonly produced vehicles in America in the 2000s and had the same body from 2000-2007. It was also produced by both Ford and Mercury (for reference its a 2001 Ford Taurus SEL). After looking up the replacement parts for the preaccident damage I figure just parts would've came out to ~$800 at most. Am I within my rights to try to negotiate a higher settlement with my car insurance company? I feel like they tried to lowball me by a lot. I also would like it if someone could try to explain "right of recourse" to me as I feel like there's some definite ways for them to fuck with me.

Edit: I am in the USA and more specifically Illinois

Agent tried pressuring me into whole life policy

    Posted: 27 May 2021 05:41 PM PDT

My workplace is switching insurance companies. We are being offered life insurance, either term or whole, and other add-ons, one of which is specifically for cancer. I asked if that coverage was possible for someone, such as myself, who had been treated for cancer. She asked for details, which I provided, and she basically said I could not get coverage. I made it clear that this was not a life-threatening condition in any way. She told me I better sign up for whole life insurance while I could, because I may never have an opportunity to do so again. I told her I felt pressured and declined the policy. She assured me she was not on commission and was just trying to help. I've since researched the matter and it looks like with my type of cancer I will not have trouble getting a policy should I choose to do so. I think she has sales targets she needs to meet even if she's not on commission. Or maybe she just doesn't know what she's talking about. I'd love to hear other opinions on the topic. I am in Virginia, US.

Advice - I inherited a share of a business, some vacant land, and just got married. What insurance do I need/should I look into?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 05:32 PM PDT

    Hi all.

Unfortunately, as the title states.. I inherited some vacant land and a small share in a mini storage business (all in North Carolina). I currently reside in WA state with my new wife and I'm trying to sort out what sort of insurance we should get.

I'll be honest, I'm feeling a little exposed. I don't think my father carried any liability coverage for the vacant properties (all undeveloped forest land), and while I understand the Warehouse carries property and tenant insurance, it's run purely as a joint venture and is not protected behind an LLC. I suppose my question is, what would you recommend I look for with insurance.

Totally out of my element here so If you need anymore information please ask.. I'm happy to answer what I can.

    Thanks!
