So I’m pretty much going to resign on Tuesday

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:17 PM PDT

I've been working for this non profit for almost five months and it's been a complete disaster.

This is my first job in producing financial statements and I have to produce a handful of financials every month and I just dont have enough prior experience. Financial closings have taken longer and my boss has been having to review my financials 2-3 times before we can finally close them.

My boss is expecting me to be excellent because I have a masters degree. They are expecting me to just know everything and I feel like I can't afford to make a mistake or have to re learn of refresh a topic. They told me that when I submit financials for them to review it pretty much has to be final.

On top of it we couldn't even start 2021 financials until late March which meant we had to catch up in so little time. The department is such a mess right now.

Last week I was called into a meeting with my boss and HR and now on Tuesday I have to meet with them again to tell them what support I need and whether or not I can do this job.

I may as well walk in Tuesday morning with a signed resignation letter. Even though this is my second job in one year, I don't want to leave but if I stay any longer, I will get fired.

I really hate this but I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like my career in financial accounting is over before it even started.

Can anyone give me any advice on how I can continue my career and if I'm able to?

Either I suck or need to scale back and work at a smaller company. I just don't know what my future in accounting looks like anymore.

Should I leave Big 4 at 9 months for an internal audit job at an insurance company with a sweet compensation package?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 09:29 AM PDT

For some background, the jobs is at a privately held company and pays about 83K total comp including 401K match and bonus in a medium-high COL and I am leaving a job in big 4 audit with around 9 months of experience or 1 year if you include internship.

They have pretty much the best healthcare plan you can get (free therapy which I will need after my stint in B4 audit lol). All the people I interviewed with gave examples of great upside within the company for people in this position and I was honestly pretty surprised when they offered it to me because the job description said 2 years experience required. I think one of the big reasons I got it though is that this insurance company is very into digitization and automation though alteryx, UiPath, etc and I sent in a demonstration video for an alteryx workflow I made while I was at Big 4.

The position is also actually hourly which I found extremely strange at first but after thinking it over I love the idea of being paid for my overtime (the busiest they said they get is 45 hours a week for 3 weeks a year and the rest of the year is a straight 40 hours). Also it is work from home for at least 5 or 6 months and then flex schedule after that.

Basically the only downside I can see is that this would be working in their ICFR controls department and they have a separate operational audit department. So I imagine I will be doing mostly ICFR testing but they have said that they also assist the operational audit team during some parts of the year on projects as well which aim excited for!

Overall I think this is a really great opportunity for me to heal from the fucked up time I've had the past year working virtually in Big 4 audit and work at a company that really seems to take care of their people well. Any thoughts?

Where did you start when you knew it was time exit public?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 06:19 PM PDT

Four years into big four and know it's time to leave auditing. Not sure what I want to do but know I need a change. Where do you even begin?

[CAN] How valuable is starting in Industry vs Public Accounting for career growth

    Posted: 29 May 2021 11:45 AM PDT

As the title said, will entering industry side out of school negatively impact my career growth in the future? I know this is a hotly debated topic.

I made a post a couple of days ago about a position in Big 4 Audit versus a Corporate Analyst role at a small Real Estate Private Equity firm. Most people commenting were urging towards the Corporate Analyst role and I ultimately decided to pursue the Corporate Analyst position but am having some second thoughts now.

The initial pay is much higher ($43k vs ~$70k including bonuses) but doing more research I'm worried about growth opportunities without Big 4 on my resume. I'm planning to obtain my CPA within the next 2-3 years and reevaluate then but I'm not sure what the implications of opportunities are coming from industry vs a Public firm.

Especially with the prospect of going into mid-upper management without Public experience. The Real Estate industry in Vancouver where I am is somewhat niche but has a reasonable market so I think I can at the very least job hop reasonably well but would have to compete with people exiting Public at the same time.

    Trying to leave tax

    Posted: 29 May 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I have a couple years of tax provision experience (industry) and want to leave tax for corporate finance. I'm willing to start over and apply to entry level finance roles. However being a non English native speaker, I'm having trouble interviewing and explaining my current job duties to make them sound relevant to a typical financial analyst role. Has anyone gone thru this before? I do calculate the effective tax rate but I don't see the connection between that and the typical forecasting, analyzing trends and financial modeling experience that those jobs ask for. I admit I'm not the smartest accountant and found tax very difficult to understand. I can do my job and am able to get work done. I just don't understand the entire picture and it makes it hard to explain what I do. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Public Nonprofit & Government Auditing

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:14 PM PDT

Hello all, Could anyone share their experience regarding career opportunities in industry coming from The nfp & gov auditing from a public firm?

I see many job postings mentioning public audit experience preferred and I'm wondering if this niche is transferable to those roles in for-profit organizations. I'd like to be a controller for a company one day and just want to align my career to that.

    Thank you!

Do Accounting Advisory (FAAS) jobs require prior audit experience?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 09:50 PM PDT

Have noticed that jobs in FAAS start from "Consultant/Associate" designation and applicants should have 1-3 years prior experience either in FAAS or in Audit.

So is it necessary to have audit experience, to work in this field?

    Stupid interview questions

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:45 AM PDT

recently i had an interview, and it seemed like the interviewer went out of his way to make it harder than it should. what are your thoughts on these questions? is it just me or is this a demeaning way to do interviews?

    - "tell me your 3rd top trait"

    - "what is your biggest flaw your best friend would say about you"

    - "someone has the exact same resume as you, why should i pick you over them?"

at one point he asked me a question, and he kept repeating it over and over and i awkwardly tried to give a new example each time, like he wasn't happy with my answer.

Is accounting just data entry? How much of your job is repetitive garbage and how much is problem solving?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 09:12 PM PDT

Fall 2020, i decided to switch careers to accounting and major in accounting because I didnt like what i was doing, .. Luckily , as somebody that swithced to accouting major and luckily found a job title called "staff accountant" that should have really been titled "data entry bitch".... Im expected to graduate in Fall 2021, but this is insane. I do literally no thinking, or speaking with anyone at work. I get paid $16/hr (and i took it thinking that Id get experience in accounting, not sign up for a data entry role..) and to sit in a chair and click the same 4 boxes over and over again. Is this what accounting is like? I feel like I'm in.... purgatory.

    Core 1: exam prep

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:41 PM PDT

Hey okay so i took the course twice. It was really tough both times. So i thought i would share what worked for me

    1) practice, this is a tough course so you gotta practice! Re do the cases. (if you don't have time, at least read over solutions)

    2) make your own study notes

    3) don't waste time making assignments all perfect and pretty

    4) make a list of topics to study (that you might not be good at)

    5) practice some more.

If you can get some external cases it would help.

I used http://cpacasevault.com and found their cases very helpful.

How do I adjust myself after being given really negative review?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:34 AM PDT

No suggest quitting because I applied everywhere and got rejected. Main reason is being in my current position for only 4 months.

I'll give myself 3 months to see if things might get better.

I felt like I'm in a really bad mentality now that I don't want to try. I felt really exhausted and incapable. My team can see it.

How do I adjust myself to really try hard again?
