    Happy Memorial Day

    Posted: 28 May 2021 01:34 PM PDT

Just took a career call to discuss my promotion. I was working in shorts outside by a river and celebrated by taking a swim. My manager was happy I was outside on such a beautiful day. I just want to say to all of those who complain about accounting. It's not the career it's the company.

Ex-Big 4 Salary Progression (IT Audit)

    Posted: 28 May 2021 11:47 AM PDT

Wanted to give back to a community I have stalked for several years now. But first, some background information:

I graduated from a masters in accounting program and passed my CPA prior to starting work in the great state of Texas in August 2017. I was fortunate to get on some great teams who taught the ins and outs of taking screenshots daily. Following Big 4, I left to a financial services company right before the covid crisis in March 2020. I recently passed my CISA and will probably marry application controls one day. This helped me to job hop again to an IT manager role at a recently IPO'd company. All jobs are in Texas.

And now for the part you care about:

    2017: 53,500 (Staff 1)

    2018: 60,500 (Staff 2)

    2019: 70,500 (Senior 1)

    2020: 91,000 (Industry Senior)

2021: 96,000 (Industry Senior pay raise)

May 2021: 133,400 (IT Audit Manager)

Happy to answer any questions on my journey in DM. Don't get too drunk on the koolaid- do what's right for you!

Big4 Intern deathly afraid of public speaking

    Posted: 28 May 2021 07:54 PM PDT

My firm is forcing us interns to present our introductory PPT slides next week. I have an intern class of 100+ people so a fuck load of ppl watching me

I am so scared of public speaking. Basicaly we need to say our name, our hobbies etc and I am afraid if I stutter and it will be cringe.

I checked the LinkedIns and half of my class is bunch of sorority girls and frat boys. I bet they will snicker at me behind their screens and this will feel like highschool all over again

    Loving WFH makes you anti-social?

    Posted: 28 May 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Obviously there has been a ton of posts about either hating or loving WFH lately. My only issue with these arguments is when people who hate WFH say that people who love it are anti-social and don't have people/soft skills. My thing is, like bro if you only socialize with people or only have friends are work, who's really anti-social lmao. Get friends outside of work bud.

    Working in Industry

    Posted: 28 May 2021 07:20 PM PDT

I see a lot of post on here joking that working overtime in Industry is stay until 5:15 pm or something similar.

In all seriousness is that true? I have worked in 2 public firms and 2 different industry jobs. I feel like I actually worked less in the public firms than I do in my current industry job (not management level).

Maybe I just have crappy industry jobs.

Tips for first year tax who doesn’t feel ready?

    Posted: 28 May 2021 12:24 PM PDT

So I graduated last year and starting a position in tax. Online school made college a blur along with heavy depression I honestly I do not remember anything about accounting tbh.

What are some things I need to know before starting if anything? Habits to be successful? Is it normal to literally not know anything before coming in or can they tell?

I changed a lot this past year and feel like I grew backwards....tax sounds even more tough now that it's closer to reality and I'm nervous this isn't the path for me since I'm not that smart either

How long does it take in Big 4 until you feel like you know things?

    Posted: 28 May 2021 08:28 PM PDT

I started in Big 4 tax about 6 months ago and feel like I'm really struggling in terms of my overall tax knowledge. I guess I know more than I did 6 months ago, but that's still very little. I still have a hard time getting up to speed when I roll onto new engagements and feel like I'm constantly bothering my seniors with questions. The work from home environment isn't helping in the sense that it can be tough to get help when I need it and also that I don't really have a good idea of how normal my confusion is and whether other newer hires are having a hard time with the same things too.

So I guess I just wanted to get a sense of whether others who have been in this position think this is normal. How long does it take until you feel like you generally get how things work? I'm starting to feel like maybe Big 4 just isn't for me, but I don't know if that feeling is premature.

Yall make accounting sound awful and I need to know is it really that bad or is it just alot of outlier situations

    Posted: 28 May 2021 06:02 PM PDT

I scroll through here occasionally when I need help with homework or if I feel like seeing the memes. I notice that a lot of the accountants here are miserable. What I cant tell if it's because its outliers or if it's just all bad. Just wanted to know how to avoid falling into the misery trap

    Tax Exit ops

    Posted: 28 May 2021 08:43 AM PDT

For you tax guys that left public accounting, what were the exit ops like? How much of a pay raise did you take when you left, and what role did you leave for? Do any of you regret doing tax instead of audit? Interested to see what people's personal experiences have been

Why does decreases in accrued liabilities need to be added to net income when converting from cash basis to accrual basis? I don’t understand the reasoning behind it.

    Unclaimed Property/Uncashed Check

    Posted: 28 May 2021 07:03 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right place to post this because I usually get notifications for other posts that are completely unrelated to what I am about to ask. Please direct me elsewhere if this post does not fit.

Recent accounting graduate currently helping my father-in-law with his business. I am running the books for his company. Without going into detail...he writes a lot of checks to vendors. These vendors receive a 1099 at the end of the year if they are above the threshold. I've done my due diligence about unclaimed property law in my state (PA). However, I am wondering if his situation differs from what is laid out per the law; I could not find anything specifying 1099 subcontractors in the fine print. Would I need to account for uncashed checks, for these vendors (1099 sub contractors), as unclaimed property? Or, because they are 1099 contractors and not employees, I can write their check off as Misc income.

    Any help/direction is appreciated! TYIA

KPMG Executive look and community experience program

    Posted: 28 May 2021 05:46 PM PDT

I know for executive look you get an interview and there's a potential of you getting a job offer, does anyone know if it could happen to community experience impact as well?

I'm a little confused... I thought the community experience program would require an interview but it didnt. But when applying it asked for resume and cover letter along with asking what division you were interested in, and location.

Does anyone know if the community experience program can lead into a job offer?
