    MS Accounting or MS 13?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:09 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm a rising senior majoring in accounting and I'm trying to decide what to do after I finish my bachelor's. Long story short, I'm trying to decide between finishing up my 150 through my school's program and recruiting for a big 4 firm, or possibly joining an El Salvadoran street gang. I'm fortunate in that I attend a target school for both options.

I'm a little concerned about the penchant for violence that MS13 might have, but I'm trying to weigh that against the generally low pay and longer hours at a B4. In addition, while turnover seems to be high in both industries, it looks like there are more options for early promotion if I sign with MS13. Either way, I think both places offer a pizza party for a job well done.

    Any advice is appreciated!

    I did it! Left public!

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:14 AM PDT

As the title says. I left back in March after being in public (Top 10) for five months. I left without a job in place but somehow it worked out and now have a job in government, the promised land! Started today and just wanted to share with you all. Don't need black tar heroine anymore!

I don't get it. Why do some entry-level positions require an applicant to have experience when that's the main reason they applied in the first place?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:17 PM PDT

It's a rhetorical question but it bothers me so much.

Like I'm trying to have an experience in real-world accounting. But this company that needs a volunteer accountant wants someone with an experience. OK, but you literally don't pay the volunteer who wants to gain experience. It's not fair to ask for experience when the applicants are trying to gain experience through volunteering!

It seems like there's no accounting job that wants you to start for the first time, even those that need volunteers!

Edit: It's ridiculous cuz even freaking accounting-related student club positions want you to have accounting experience

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone who is looking to exit from public to industry?

Just started studying for the CPA and the imposter syndrome just kicked in. Anyone else feel that way?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:42 PM PDT

I started studying for FAR, and I feel like I know less than what I thought I did. I have my masters in tax and work for a tax firm and I'm always learning something new but studying for this exam made me realize I really don't know if I truly know anything about my profession.

Welp, good luck to anyone else studying for the exams.

    Feeling unappreciated - just venting

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:27 PM PDT

    Hi y'all

I'm writing this so I can get this off my chest. I work for a company that is about to go public but due to terrible working hours and no work life balance I decided to call it quits. I couldn't do these crazy hours anymore with an understaffed team. Everyone is burnt out and I feel bad that my team has to go through this.

I was searching for a new job and finally received an offer (which I am super excited about). A week before I received the offer, the controller called me to inform me that I would be getting a bonus for all the work done for the public offering - all in writing. The following week, I received an offer and officially resigned from the current company.

I should have seen it coming but when I looked at my paystub, it has my bonus but it did not hit my bank. I thought hm maybe there is a day delay so I decided to wait after the weekend and asked payroll on Monday (today). I emailed payroll and they said the controller put a stop payment on the bonus. Uh oh.

I scheduled a call with the controller and we talked. It felt like a slap in the face. Basically said bonus is discretionary (I understood this) but we "don't reward/invest in employees that don't stay with us." I bought up that we discussed that this bonus is for work that was already done and they repeated the same thing back to me. The controller touts open communication constantly (amongst other things) and yet didn't bother telling me that I will not be receiving my bonus. The conversation went nowhere and I just told them that I was disappointed in their decision to pull my bonus.

So at the end of the day, I can't help but feel pretty shitty. I worked all those hours just to get a slap in the face. I really thought of quitting today but that would be too implusive and put my team in a bad spot. I care deeply for my team. So I plan on working until my last day (probably with minimal effort after this lol)

    The end. Thanks for reading.

    Bridge burning

What are some of the bridges you've burnt in your career that you look back on and regret? Or at least wish you hadn't burnt.

    Burnout before even graduating

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:44 PM PDT

I'm having struggles finding motivation for this career field and I haven't even graduated yet. Please tell me if the actual job is anything like the school work or if it's more tolerable. I love math and I love tedious work, but I'm not sure if it's just the school work burning me out or what. It's making me really hate accounting.

Getting a year in as senior worth it?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:35 PM PDT

Coming up on 2 years as a B4 staff at a regional office. Been senioring most jobs, coaching first-years, taking care of deliverables, working with managers/partners directly, etc. and reviews have been pretty good.

Is there any value in staying another year just for a busy season with the senior title if my experiences already reflect the skillset of a senior? If my goal is to get a senior financial analyst role in industry and I can get offers now, would I still be stunting my career long-term to leave as an A2?

Everything about this job has gotten significantly shittier this past year and between pay raises being a joke and the stupid hours I've worked, can anyone think of any reason not to get out of this meat grinder a year early?

    [CAN] September 2021 CFE stress

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:32 PM PDT

I am looking at the Capstone 1 module, and am already beginning to stress about the upcoming CFE in September. I am not sure when the appropriate time to begin studying/reviewing technical material is for this exam, as I began lightly reviewing technical material last week (reading the eBooks and developing notes), and now that I have seen the Capstone 1 schedule I am even more stressed about finding time to review technical material leading up to Capstone 2. Just wondering if any successful CFE writers can provide some advice on how much I should study/when is (or was, lol) a good time to start reviewing technical material for this exam? I am very stressed out in figuring out how I am going to find time to review the technical material for the CFE.

Are the salaries really that low?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:36 AM PDT

I was watching a youtube video about what type of salary to expect as an accountant and the guy said the average pay is 43,000 dollars a year. That sounds really terrible and demotivating. Go to college and get a bachelors degree only to make a barely liveable salary when you finish. Someone please tell me that guy was wrong and accountants actually make more money than that.

Auditor/Sox - Do you know of a good freeware TickMark Excel add-in?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:14 PM PDT

I was asked to fix an add-in developed for excel 2007. I figured the big 4 might have released their version or smaller companies would have found a good one.

I found one that is ok. Then I found one that is bad ass but the download site is gone.

    All help appreciated.

Does anyone genuinely enjoy working for the big 4?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:36 AM PDT

I'm starting a big 4 job in audit later this year. I keep seeing posts about how terrible it is to work for them, so I have to ask: are there any positive testimonies out there? Does anyone think it's a pleasant place to work?
