I'm so burnt out. After 5 busy seasons I think I'm done.

Government is all that is was hyped up to be.

Spent the first six hours of my day today leisurely researching a $30 variance while listening to a decent audiobook. I'm never leaving.

    First day on the job

    Posted: 05 May 2021 08:47 AM PDT

First day on a big 4 client, fresh out of college, I was asked to pull some contracts that were stored on the bottom shelf of the file cabinet. As I bent down my discount store dress pants ripped from my ass crack down to the bend in my knee. I was so embarrassed. It was my first time meeting my team and the client and there was no way I could let them find out. I scurried away trying to angle my backside out of anyone's view. Luckily it was winter and I had a long duffle coat that came down to my knees. I threw it on for the rest of the day and made it out with my dignity intact. Moral of the story, buy quality dress pants.

What St. Matthew the tax collector was thinking when he became an Apostle

I’ve had it with all these accounting teachers not teaching.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:03 PM PDT

Just need to rant for a bit, currently a senior in college majoring in accounting. I was able to understand almost everything in financial and managerial accounting but did not learn an absolute thing in intermediate 1 or 2. The professors offering the classes(online, no in person classes currently) absolutely blow. They all just use McGraw-Hill which consists of the smart book, a HW and a quiz each week. They do not provide any resources outside of that. Which brings me to why even pay the teacher at this point when literally everything is through McGraw-Hill. I rather just pay the 200 dollars for that awful software and learn nothing instead of paying a teacher and a software to learn absolutely nothing.

I honestly feel like I understand the fundamentals. Debits/Credits, depreciation, financial statements etc. but I think if the accounting field gets any more in depth than that I will be so lost once I enter the job force.

I just want to go back to in person classes again and have teachers actually stand there and try to teach the material instead of just having us do these connect assignments.

Edit: I should share that I'm stuck with the same professors for most of my remaining classes, with the exception of tax since they are the only ones teaching those courses at the moment.

I am convinced accounting 20-30 years ago was 10x easier than it is today.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:28 AM PDT

Your work load was nothing what it was compared to today, you just spend hours adding numbers on a calculator, you didnt need to learn a new computer program or IT system every 6-12 months, ddint get emails calls and pings 24/7. and there wasnt and SOX yet.

How much notice is appropriate as a senior?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 07:48 PM PDT

How much notice is appropriate? In going to quit relatively soon as a 1st year senior. Things are pretty slow now until mid July. Is two weeks sufficient? Will it impact whether they are willing to be a reference?

Hello accountants of Reddit! I'm wondering if any accountants here have a second job / side hustle that they do aside from being an accountant? How's that working out ?

To the people who decided not to get your CPA, do you regret it? How is your life/career going?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:14 PM PDT

I visit this sub here and there and I see a lot of "get your CPA or you're doomed."

I'm curious to hear from people who chose not to get their CPA and how their life/career is going for them. Do you regret not getting your CPA?

    Thanks!

    Finance major.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 06:46 PM PDT

I'm currently a Finance major, but I want to pursue a career in Accounting. To be specific, I want to work in audit. I spoke with a few people and they said it might be difficult for me to break into audit unless I have 150 credits (CPA eligible) or CPA.

The problem is, I'll be graduating in the summer and I plan on working for a year before I enroll for classes again. Does major matter when applying for audit positions? If so, what other positions should I apply for that can help me pivot into auditing?
