Starting a company without the right idea from the get-go

    Posted: 07 May 2021 06:03 AM PDT

A few weeks ago, my team had the chance to interview Illit Geller.

She's a serial entrepreneur and the founder of TradAir, a leading provider of institutional trading solutions, that has just completed an $11M Series D round. And when I read her story I could see why.

She didn't just build a solution for her target market, she built it with her target market: "I decided to start a fintech in this market without a specific idea.". Reaching out to them, listening to their problems, and sharing ideas on how to solve them.

If you're looking to build a business, make sure you make your target market part of that decision.

Reach out to them, hear their problems and share your ideas for a solution.

In this interview, we discussed how she validated the idea, built the MVP, her road to product-market fit, the early-stage startup team, and some entrepreneurial advice.

    Here´s the full interview: https://altar.io/building-a-fintech-by-listening-to-the-market-founder-interview/

A chrome extension that recommends local businesses while shopping on Amazon or eBay, tailored to what you were previously searching for.

I recently created my first chrome extension. I would truly love some feedback (UI and practicality) and some tips to move forward. I made this app because I know that local businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic.

It ain't lonely at the top or bottom, it's always during the process!

    • You have people with sympathy at the bottom.
    • You have people who want you for ransom at top.
    • You either have no one or few ones who trust or critize you.

Starting a business, you will often feel like you are losing. Struggling here, there, everywhere

But the real loss is losing without learning anything. If you lose, but you learned, then it is not a loss

I have ideas, but struggle with execution. How do I get started?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 09:03 AM PDT

I feel I have some good ideas and have seen a few adopted elsewhere with some success. But I struggle with the execution and how to actually get started building the business. I'm a college student so I do not have access to any adequate capital to start via a homerun.

So how do you guys go from idea to final business ready to offer the service or product?

    How to overcome expensive shipping?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 01:07 PM PDT

About to start a book company in Europe, and one of the main hurdles that I've been trying to solve is that shipping to the US is rather expensive. The books will cost 25€, and the shipping to the US is 15€. If they order 2 books, then shipping is 19€. And that's normal shipping, tracked is 23/27€ for 1/2 books respectively.

Maybe other people view it differently, but to me, that's way too expensive and I'd be pissed off seeing that in check out. For some context, where most of my audience buys books from the shipping is free.

But not sure what to do about it? The ideal would be to have a fulfilling center in the USA also but that requires a much larger investment that I just don't have money for. The only thing I can think of is:

    1. Say the shipping is less expensive (10€?) and try to get the other 5€ by increasing the book from 25 to 30€, but I'm afraid that won't payoff much, as the price increase will be sufficient for some people not to buy.

    2. Again reduce the shipping cost to 10€ but keeping the price the same and just accept the profit loss for the US, and just have the profit from the European market.

    What would you do?

After 1 year of development our social photo challenge app, Moonshot has been hunted and featured in Product Hunt

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:34 AM PDT

In reality we were not planning to launch the product hunt page until the app was in the app store (currently is in beta) but a hunter liked our idea and now it's online, we were not ready at all for product hunt.

This is how our idea started:

We love photography, other social networks are full of fake news and everything seems an advertisement. We wanted a social that could inspire you taking great photos and we love videogames so it has rpg elements.

The idea started with creating a social network where only instant photography is allowed, this means that you can't upload pictures from your gallery. Then we added game elements, like real time ranking for photos and users.

I suggest to always be ready. Your product could always be promoted by fans anytime

Should I create another business for real estate or should I use my current business to do real estate? Does it matter?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 12:57 PM PDT

I want most of the profits from my sales business to go into real estate but I am wondering if I should create a business on its own for the real estate part.

I see pros and cons of both choices which is why I am asking you.

Pros and cons about having two different companies:

    Pros:

    1. Easier to sell one of the businesses
    2. The economics of each business will not be mixed
    3. More fitting names

    Cons:

    1. Have to "run two businesses"
    2. The economics of each business will not be mixed and therefore more advanced accounting work. (I dont know how much this matters)

How much would 3D printing a prototype for a carrying case cost, and how what's required (pre-reqs) to do so?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 12:13 PM PDT

I have a friend that sells allergy products (think glass vials in packs of 12) for a company. He is asked often, "Do you have a case to carry these vials from place to place?"

We have reached out to our alma mater engineering departments to get some students to help create a Solidworks / Autocad diagram of a carrying case for the vials.

I own another company so am familiar with patents and the business side of things, but my friend and I both are clueless when it comes to making a hardware prototype.

We are thinking we get a 3D design created (we are paying a mechanical engineering student to help us!), but then what?

The vials come in a "vial holder" that is 11" x 10" x 8". We want our case to hold one single "vial holder".

Creating a Unique And Sustainable Competitive Advantage In the Innovative Technology Sector

    Posted: 07 May 2021 11:32 AM PDT

When it comes to operating and managing a successful business in an increasingly cut throat business world, it's important for entrepreneurs to understand their company's competitive advantage and how to best position themselves in heavily saturated markets.

How can businesses in the technology sector ensure their competitive advantage strategies allow them to achieve sustainable growth, not just short-term profitability?

Simply leveraging innovative technology on its own can never be enough to, as improvements in technology are ever-changing and constantly evolve on a day by day basis.

Utilizing technology to bridge the gap between communities

For George Siosi Samuels, founder of Honā, managing director of Faiā, and co-founder of The Pack, community technology is a way to not only uplift his homeland in the Pacific but other communities across the globe.

Samuels is widely known as "The Digital Wayfinder", a respectable nod to his ancestors who mastered the oceans as "Wayfinders" as he finds himself similarly exploring new territories of the ever-expanding digital ocean to bridge gaps between communities and technology.

The ventures he has created all align with his overall mission in bridging gaps between communities and technology. With Faiā specifically, Samuels helps organizations improve technology adoption through nuanced understanding of culture and community. They also hold deep expertise in blockchain technology (e.g. Bitcoin SV), so that they can translate complex topics into simpler terms.

"I believe there is a wealth of opportunity in the Pacific, and it's my sincerest hope that I can help connect the pathways that lead Pacific nations to leverage future digital economies for their own benefit, reducing the need for foreign aid or assistance. And even more so, use that prosperity to protect their lands, harness their oceans, and balance power."

My life became the guinea pig.

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:12 AM PDT

My job as a mom of 5 is the most important in my life. Unfortunately, back in 2016, I wasn't certain that I would live to see my children grow up. I was suddenly diagnosed with multiple conditions to include Pericarditis (fluid and inflammation around the heart), Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Hashimoto's Thyroid disease. At 34 years old I was falling apart. Placed on bedrest for months, I was unable to care for my 4 children at the time. I could barely walk due to severe chest and back pain. The fluid and inflammation around my heart made it difficult to breathe. The thyroid symptoms caused severe fatigue. Rheumatoid Arthritis caused my joints to be extremely sore. I worried about receiving so many diagnoses at once, but I felt confident that my doctors would get things back on track for me.

A month went by and my conditions became worse. The heart issue was due to a viral infection that neither of my cardiologists could figure out a cure for. I was given medication after medication, but my symptoms became worse after each attempt. A daily cocktail of steroids, antibiotics, and inflammation medicine were not well received by my body. I thought I was going to die. My main concern at the time were my children, and who was going to take care of them in my absence. I had lost all hope.

One night after another failed cardiologist appointment, I had the idea to begin research natural healing remedies. I knew a little about herbs at the time but was impressed by the information I discovered in relation to healing some of the symptoms that plagued me. At this point I had nothing to lose. I made a promise to myself that if the doctors couldn't heal me, that I would figure out how to heal myself, which is exactly what I did. I taught myself about herbs and researched every single symptom I had. Once I found and herb to heal each symptom, I began to slowly incorporate those herbs as teas daily. I stopped all of the prescription medicines. After about a month of using the herbs, both my doctors and I began to see improvements in all of my conditions. My cardiologist told me that he wasn't sure what I was doing, but to keep it up because it was working!

This was a great start, but my healing did not stop here. As I began to learn more about holistic healing, I came across an article about chakras. Chakras are 7 major energy centers in the body that can cause both physical and spiritual symptoms if they are out of balance. They become unbalanced to due issues like stress, anxiety, heartbreak, and not speaking one's truth. I made the correlation with my symptoms and began to work on each chakra through crystal therapy and meditation. For example, my heart condition was due to an imbalanced heart chakra, so in addition to the herbs, I also began to use crystals that are associated with healing the heart chakra along with other self-love practices.
I was told by both of my cardiologists that Pericarditis has no cure and that I could expect it to return quite often. That was five years ago and I have yet to experience any of those symptoms again. I have since gone through my 5th pregnancy successfully without the thyroid or Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms returning. I don't take any prescription medicines. I am fueled by tea and crystals.

This experience has resulted in a business that I hold near and dear. Bea's Wellness Teas is my company that was birthed out of this life-changing experience. Our online shop carries 17 different wellness tea blends for the most common wellness concerns. From anxiety, sleep issues, inflammation, chakra balancing…there's a tea for that. Chakra crystals can also be found in addition to different incense and smudges. We basically sell everything that has helped to heal my mind, body, and soul. Through my experiences I have been able to help many others heal, and for that I am grateful. Recently I decided to apply for ClearAngel and got accepted into the cohort by Clearco (formerly Clearbanc). You have my gratitude for listening to my story, I know it was a long one. Hopefully it was helpful to you on your journey.I choose to empower myself by healing through natural holistic remedies when everything else seemed like it wasn't going to work. How about trying something new before we try another pill?

Does mindset affect your business results?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 10:00 AM PDT

    Hi,

I see a lot of entrepreneurs in this group on different levels in their journeys and I love that :) I am wondering about times when things were tough for you when it comes to mindset around making money or transitioning from 9-5 to the business world. Have you ever experienced inconsistency around what you say you are going to do, and what you actually are doing? Has it ever affected your results in business or life in general?

UPC question for our product. Will be have any issues?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 09:40 AM PDT

Were laucnhing our first product and want to make sure our UPC is going to work. Our UPC A is 6/8" tall and 1-3/16" wide; this is from the edge of the white background to the edge of the white background and not from the edge of the bars or numbers. I downloaded the GS1 app and the UPC was able to scan with the app and I went into Home Depot and scanned it and I believe the system at Home Depot was able to read the UPC as it said the product couldn't be found which I think is a good sign as the scanner was able to read the UPC but it couldn't find the product as it hasn't been loaded into their database.

I also saw barcodes on products in Home Depot which were smaller than mine.

I'm also pretty sure the smallest size a UPC can be is:

I found the below quote here Link to site

"What are the Sizing Requirements for UPC Codes?

The standard magnification for (100%) UPC symbols requires a total area of 1.46″ x 1.020″. UPC sizes can range between 80-200%. Symbols less than 80% (1.1875″ x .813″) may not scannable by retailers."

Question: Do you think I'll have any issues?

    Thanks!

How do I drive traffic to my Shopify site for little to no cost?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:49 AM PDT

I recently created a website to sell disposable gloves and PPE on and I am finding it difficult to get eyeballs onto the site in order to convert those eyeballs to sales. I am looking for advice on the best ways to catch the attention of potential buyers, get them to go to the website, and to actually stay on the website long enough to hopefully buy something.

School me on promoting a lifestyle apparel brand

    Posted: 06 May 2021 09:08 PM PDT

I'm building a startup apparel brand (outdoor/angling theme). It is modeled after successful brands in the same space (though ours is very tailored to our location). My designs are on tees, performance/sun shirts, trucker hats, etc. as well as art prints. Running no ads yet produced 4K in revenue this past month simply by sharing images of shirts and art on social media. Shopify-based website is complete as are our FB and IG pages and a sister Etsy shop.

We are slowly learning the FB advertising platform and plan to scale ads over time. Questions:

    • If this was your business, how would you go about promoting it?
    • are FB and IG our best bets for driving sales via ads? What about Google ads?
    • Is the casual apparel space saturated on FB, in your estimation, or does the cream (quality products in niche markets) still rise?
    • at what point should we seek expert help with FB and IG ad campaigns rather than managing them ourselves?

Please be blunt. II will value all thoughtful counsel from bottom-line-oriented types. Thx!

Am i suffering from the grass is greener complex? Undecisive about business.

    Posted: 06 May 2021 03:38 PM PDT

My background is in engineering and my dad runs a successful business in the power sector in another country. Dad makes of 2 million USD per year.

We switched to a different country and dad wanted me to continue the business. However, i do not have much experience in that industry and realistically speaking it will take me decades to reach any sort of decent level. Personally i am not even sure i can ever reach a good level of business because i do not have the requisitve experience. However, i can start from the low end of the market, from domestic customers and build it up slowly.

I am slightly iffy on this. The other option is I take a risk and try going for other sectors of businesses. I like the idea of going into e-commerce.

I have around 200K I am able to spend. On one hand my brain says I should play to my strengths and go in the sector i have studied in, worked in and have experience in broadly speaking.

On the other hand, my head says if i were to go into another lucrative sector, i could end up making much more money.
