Learnings from 10 yrs. Wall St. Experience - Understanding Shareholder Behavior

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:46 PM PDT

Hey all!! There's interest so I'm moving to share the knowledge and tactics I've learned 10 years of Wall St. starting with a simple step-by-step book!

My plan is to share as much as possible. Here's a fun one to start.

Shareholder ownership as a tool. TLDR: Shareholder lists help you anticipate how stock moves, the quality of the business, and ideas potential "catalysts." And be valuation flexible!

If you are interested, I'd love to hear your feedback here (2 minutes!). Here is the outline of the book. (or leave a comment!). Or get in on the pre-sale!

There are three major institutional groups in the markets.

1 - Passive funds. ETFs and funds that invest based on indexes (like $SPY). They are over 50% over equity assets and likely account for most buying / selling volume day to day. They buy with inflows (people buying the fund) and buy more when stocks goes higher (market-cap weighted).

So how do you use this insight?

One is pick stocks in macro / sector flow ($XLE, $XLF, $XLRE, $XLC - top returns YTD - oil prices, rates, real estate, retail - all higher), and style flows ($IJR and $IWD - top returns YTD - small-caps, value).

The more % shares are ETF (i.e. passive), the more the stock will move with the factor / sector.

Second and very importantly, you must be flexible on valuation. When company's growth improves, the value of the company increases, so passive funds will buy more of the stock.

This is exactly what happened with $TSLA. ETFs will buy MORE as it gets bigger.

Use valuation to understand the business and its upside but know that valuation is NOT a reason (alone) to buy or sell something - the majority of funds don't even look at it.

2 - Hedge funds (HF) These funds that invest with specialized strategies (provide "alpha"). Well-respected names like Lone Pine / WhaleRock for growth, or value HFs like Scion (Burry), Miller, Nuance.

When you see a HF they are stock for a reason. There could be a catalyst ("event") or strategic business change, or some emerging "secular" trend.

Use them source of interesting ideas. And check 13Fs for new positions.

For example, Lone Pine is playing the new growth of $SNAP and continuous glucose monitors $DXCM. Whale Rock is is in auto travel ($UBER, $CVNA). Pura Vida is in $INOV for its strategic pivot.

Now the downside is HF activity can make the stock more volatile. A stock like $MSCI bounced around a lot last year as HFs came in and out.

The long/short (LS) funds Citadel, Point72 and Millennium don't show up on 13Fs - but they are also very active since they crowd in and out of names with leverage (i.e borrowed money). When volatility picks up like in February / March these funds all "de-gross" or reduce exposure and that can be an opportunity to pick up shares sold-off hard.

3 - Long only investors (LO) - These are the mutual funds that manage retail retirement assets. Companies also love them as shareholders because they usually hold for many years.

Respected names are Capital, Fidelity, TRowe, JP Morgan, American.

    How is this useful?

Use them to help assess the business. These funds are in high-quality companies (like $SPGI) where there is less risk of blowups like fraud. Fidelity and TRowe have management teams rotating in and out to see them -where they are grilled by specialized sector research teams. They do their diligence.

The stock will likely be less volatile since LO's don't trade and may buy dips to accumulate shares.

Names like Baron, Ballie Gifford, Jennison are very respected at identifying growth / innovative companies. Use them as a vote of confidence in a new company. For example, Baron and Ballie were both early to invest in $TLSA and Jennison in $ADYEN, and have both done very well.

    Happy investing!!

(You can see this information in Atom Finance ownership lists. And WhaleWisdom for 13Fs.)

DD ON THE ORAL COVID VACCINE THAT THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:22 PM PDT

VAXART - Hold the ice (and the Needles!)

Imagine receiving your vaccine as a pill 💊 sent to you by mail. Or delivered by drones to your distant village. No freeze boxes required, no nurses to administer any needles. No more ruining the environment with empty syringes. No more complicated logistical problems slowing down the aim, the endgame, which is herd immunity. You just take the pill with a sip of water, done.

VAXART👑💊 Advancing a technology named VAAST, which aims to create oral pill vaccines that are room temperature stable, effective and easily distributable.

Pipeline has so far demonstrated excellent results regarding the covid19 vaccine/norovirus/universal flu studies.

Covid19 vaccine phase 2 expected to start during Q2. Oral tablet, room temperature stable, eliminates any problems with logistics. Will be a key solution to vaccinate the developing world & boost the developed world. Emphasis is on it's ability to target the S & N proteins, thus be effective even against any kind of mutations. Because believe me, this virus mutates, and it does so fast.

Possible collaboration with JNJ on the universal flu? Awaiting JNJ response, deadline approx 3rd May. Newly rented building next to JNJ with a bridge connecting the 2 buildings.

Possible funding by governments outside the US? Biden advisor Richetti's brother is lobbying to get Vaxart funding.

Active recruitment ongoing, many newly hired employees and available positions. Since Mid-March they have added enough postings to double their workforce and almost 50% of those hires would be in Quality Control and Manufacturing for a company that does not have a product yet.

Financial stability to survive on its own for a long time without outside funds.

They have really stepped up their PR game and are more transparent on social media.

2 conferences and 1 ER expected in early May. Vaxart will welcome T-cell expert Mark Davis, Ph.D., Stanford University School of Medicine, to report on the importance of T-cell immunity in COVID-19 vaccines (3rd of May).

Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:19 PM PDT

This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report.

Here is a Market Recap for today Thursday, April 29, 2021

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:11 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Thursday, April 29, 2021

Stocks hit fresh record highs as market participants considered a batch of stronger-than-expected corporate earnings reports and new proposals from President Biden aimed at revamping the US' infrastructure and supporting families, children, and students. The S&P 500 (SPY) hit a new intraday record, driven by gains in mega-cap stocks like Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL), both of which reported blowout earnings.

Last night, President Biden addressed a joint session of Congress, during which he said "America was back on the move again" following the coronavirus pandemic that devastated the economy. In his address, President Biden touted his $2 trillion infrastructure plan and unveiled a new $1.8 trillion proposal aimed at supporting children, students, and families. This proposal, called the American Families Plan, would be funded in part with the newly proposed tax increases on the wealthy. Read the details of the proposal here.

Earnings season continues to deliver blowout results, with Apple and Facebook massively outperforming analyst expectations. Facebook's stock, in particular, gapped up more than 7%. The strong results from these companies adds to a parade of mega-cap companies that have vastly outperformed estimates, driven by a surge in demand as the US economy gradually reopens thanks to effective vaccine distribution. According to FactSet, as of early Wednesday, companies comprising nearly half of the S&P 500's market capitalization had reported earnings results, with 83% of these corporations topping estimates, and by an average of 21.7%.

Market participants also digested recent commentary from members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which included no major changes to policy but did highlight recent improvements in the US economy. FOMC members said the effective distribution of the vaccine in the US has improved economic conditions but reiterated interest rates will remain near-zero and the current pace of the asset purchasing program in place. The Fed said, "Amid progress and strong policy support, indicators of economic activity and employment have risen." The committee remains optimistic about the rebound in economic activity, describing the most affected sectors as "having shown improvement", but shows no signs of slowing quantitative easing or raising interest rates. With more than 8 million people still out of jobs compared to pre-pandemic levels, FOMC reiterated its commitment to supporting the economy.

    Highlights

    • The Labor Department released its Weekly Unemployment Report, which shows fresh pandemic-era lows as the economy gradually reopens.
      • Initial jobless claims, week ended April 24: 553,000 vs. 540,000 expected and an upwardly revised 566,000 during the prior week
      • Continuing claims, week ended April 17: 3.660 million vs. 3.590 million expected and a downwardly revised 3.651 million during the prior week
    • Shares of Uber, Lyft and Doordash (DASH) fell sharply after Reuters reported that Labor Secretary Marty Walsh supported reclassifying gig workers as employees. This change would give workers additional benefits at a large cost to companies. Recall the battle last year over Proposition 22 in California, which eventually passed in favor of companies in the gig-economy.
    • US gross domestic product (GDP) increased at a 6.4% quarter-over-quarter, seasonally adjusted annualized rate in the first three months of 2021, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said Thursday in its first estimate on GDP. This marked an acceleration from the 4.3% annualized growth rate from the fourth quarter of 2020
    • New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that NYC would open with full capacity beginning July 1. "Our plan is to fully reopen on July 1. We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full strength," de Blasio said.
    • The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Thursday it is auditing Boeing Co's process for making minor design changes across its product line after a 737 MAX manufacturing issue grounded dozens of planes.
    • **Please note that current stock price is written premarket and does not reflect intraday changes*\*
    • Apple (AAPL) with a host of target raises following their blowout earnings report. Consensus price target $180 at Buy. Stock currently around $137

Question about risk and profit management

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:02 PM PDT

Hi all, I've got to ask you about opinions and suggestions on my current risk and profit management.

I've been using it about a while to a success but now I'm thinking that it might be tweaked a little.

So basically I have four Risk Percent thresholds of possible losses: 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%. Each of these is correlated to Decimal Amount of profit (reward part of risk and reward), 10% is 0,25; 20% is 0,5; 30% is 1 and 40% is 2.

When setting stop loss/take profit I first set my entry price. From that I calculate stop loss by doing simple equation: SL= Entry - (Entry * Risk Percent).

After SL is calculated I calculate take profit: TP= [(Entry - SL)* DecimalAmount ]+Entry

So what do you guys think about it? I was thinking that I might be taking too little profit, especailly that I'm more of a swing/position trader.
    What would you guys suggest?

SNCA merged with Leading Biosciences to create Palisade Bio (PALI). Potential Investment Opportunity.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:47 PM PDT

Palisade Bio (PALI), formed by the reverse merger of Seneca BioSciences (NASDAQ: SNCA) and privately held Leading BioSciences, will begin trading on the Nasdaq today.

    • A concurrent $20M investment was led by Altium Capital as part of the merger.
    • Palisade is focusing on drugs for gastrointestinal conditions.
    • The company's sole pipeline product, LB1148, is an oral broad-spectrum protease inhibitor for multiple indications in phase 2.
    • Palisade intends for LB1148 to compete against Merck's Entereg (alvimopan)

Seneca Biopharma (SNCA) performed a 1 for 6 reverse split and changed its name to Palisade Bio (PALI). This means shareholders will receive 1 share of PALI for every 6 shares of SNCA they held in their account on April 28th, 2021.

    LUCID AIR REVEALS AMP-1 EV

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 06:15 AM PDT

Forget about the marketing and focus on how Lucid will make its cars.

Peter Rawlinson is not only Lucid's CEO but also the company's CTO: Chief Technical Officer. That said, he must know every bit of every process the company developed to create its cars. Yet, he managed to play surprised in this video in which Peter Hochholdinger, Lucid's VP of Manufacturing, presents the production processes of AMP-1. Forget about the marketing attempt and focus on the real deal: how Lucid will make its cars.

The visit to the plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, allowed us to see the factory is pretty ordinary in most of its aspects. All car manufacturing sites have a body shop, a paint shop, and a general assembly area. Far from being a disappointment, this can be a relief for investors: Lucid will follow a well-known recipe for making its cars.

Not by chance, most of the video describes the paint shop. When AMP-1 is at full production capacity, it will be able to handle 365,000 vehicles per year. In this first phase, it will paint 34,000 cars annually. Lucid already presented the paint shop in a previous video, and it seems to be pretty proud of its quality, an Achilles' heel for some of its competitors. The body shop presents a few innovations, such as the own robots working as fixture stations. Fixtures are fundamental for the body geometry to be absolutely perfect. Any deviation on any side will represent problems with gaps, water leaks, and wind noise, apart from other unpredictable issues. That means these robots have to be very, very precise.

Finally, the assembly line shows that the battery pack joins the body at the end of the process. If it were a structural component, it would have to be integrated into the vehicle much earlier. Although that presents advantages in cost, it may penalize serviceability. Lucid is promising to give its customers an impeccable car. It even postponed deliveries to make sure the first Air owners will not regret being early adopters. Let's hope that is not just marketing talk.
