    Im wondering if anyone has dealt with a bad neighbor,, and if so, how you dealt with it? I started a winery tasting room last year in a location that used to be a restaurant. I met with neighbors and we all seemed friendly and they seemed excited to have us as they didn't like the previous restaurant who operated a bar until 12 or 2am (depending on night). We are a completely different vibe, very low key, and close 8pm during week and 10pm on weekends.

    Because of the pandemic, the only real money-making nights were the occasional Saturdays when I'd have a guitar player on the patio for socially-distanced events. One neighbor whom I thought we were on good terms with, decided we weren't allowed to do this per our permit. I decided to pay the fees to go to council and get an amendment rto clarify that we could do these events, which we were approved unanimously and given a 63 decibel limit at our property line. Neighbor fought this, sent letters to council, harassed us as well as council, and stood up in council meeting to bad mouth us. He had nothing bad about us, but compared us to the previous bar. He was overridden and we are-and always have been-good neighbors.

    Fast forward to last weekend and we had a guitar player on patio from 7pm to 9pm and he calls the cops on us. I step out with the officer, show him our decibel reading of 54, and the police officer doesn't even tell us to turn it down because it's ridiculous. Also, there is a highway that runs by us both which spikes the decibel meter to the 80s regularly. 54 at our property line means it's much lower across the busy street and at his house. I can't even hear it from my own parking lot.

    I have no doubt this neighbor will call the police on us every time we have any event on our patio in order to create a history for the next council review. He called the police 56 times on the previous business during the previous year. He pulls video off our social media and sends it to council members to show how obnoxious we are- he can't do it from his house because I'm sure we are not loud enough to make his point. I mean, it's still daylight, for goodness sake when we have music.

    Has anyone dealt with this and if so, is this something where a cease & desist would work? I'm not too worried about the city as when he pulls these stunts the mayor and several council members were patronizing my business. They know what's up. It's just the constant headache from this guy (and txt msgs, and harassment online by his son, etc)

    Easiest way to get started hiring part-time employees?

    Hello - I run local photography business in California. Pre-covid, I was absolutely kicking ass and thinking about hiring a virtual assistant + another photographer. It's taken literally 14 months to get back to my prior peak, but thank god it's here.

    Within the next two months, I'll need to hire another photographer (potentially two) in order to keep growing.

    What's the easiest/fastest way to get started? Do I need an HR system? Anything I need to file with the state? Any hires would be part-time to start, then go full-time within a couple months.

    Any and all help appreciated. Or, if you know of a guide/book I can buy that would help too. Vendors pls don't spam me.

    Sending handwritten greeting cards.

    I am getting so much pleasure out of sending handwritten funny cards to my customers, sometimes for no reason at all. It's so appreciated by people and it feels good to me too.

    I suggest this form of communication because everything is so digital and handwritten cards, even just to say hi, are LOVED! It's a great way to stand out in the crowd.

    Now, I need to go restock my funny card stock from Amazon after I got an appreciative call from one of my peeps.

    How much profit should I take home vs how much to re-invest back into the business?

    If a company is making $1 million on average annually and has a profit of 10%, which is 100k, what is the general percentage rule on how much to reinvest back into business vs how much/what percentage to home and keep to yourself?     Recommend a good credit card management tool

    I use multiple credit cards, and managing them can be a bit difficult. I don't like to put everything on auto pay as I like to verify my charges before paying them out. I just missed my due date and got charged with a late fee 😡. Can you please recommend a good bill management tool that you use to take the hassle away ?

    Small business LLC and sole proprietor... what is really deductible for my car?

    I am starting a safety consulting business (one woman wolf pack) this month and have spent time outlining what will actually be deductible for my small business. Many items are pretty cut and dry (home office portion of mortgage, business computer, business cell phone, monthly service fees) but I am getting different opinions from CPAs depending on who I talk to regarding business vehicle deductions. NOTE my vehicle also doubles as my personal vehicle. I also plan to have my business logo / phone number plastered on my vehicle side doors so as to serve the intent of a roaming billboard.

    Can I deduct all mileage, even if I'm not going to clients / work related travel? Can I deduct all vehicle payments (current payments are 500$/month)? Insurance? How about car washes? Gas?

    My income will be pretty minimal for a while. Keeping my business as a 'gig' and staying at my primary job until my business hopefully takes off.

    Learning to work "in" a business vs. Working "on" a business?

    I'm a young aspiring entrepreneur - I want to someday start a small business with growth potential and then lead/manage/grow it until I'm ready to retire.

    I've been working in B2B manufacturing for a few years, which I enjoy, and I've started to notice there are plenty of opportunities to differentiate / outperform some of the small business suppliers/vendors that my company works with. I don't yet know exactly what I would do if I were to start my own, but I think B2B manufacturing is a good fit for me.

    What I've noticed is some of these businesses seem to have been started by a person who was really good at one particular thing (for example, welding or engineering), but they're not really the best at running the business itself. I expect that's common, which probably explains the advice I've heard to work "on" your business instead of "in" it.

    In my current job I'm on a management track. I think I'm suited for that, and I'd be good at working "on" my business if I started one. But I feel like if I stay on a management track, I'll never be able to get into the details of manufacturing and the broader market enough to really figure out how to make the jump into starting my own business (that is, how to work "in" a business).

    So my question is: Does anyone have advice for my situation? Specifically, would it be better to stay on a management track, or take a step "down" in order to learn a skill (such as welding or engineering) and become more aware of the specific needs of the market?

    Should I Onboard with AngiesList Since I Am A Startup Home Improvement Company?

    Hello Folks,

    I am trying to figure out if I should invest in AngiesList. I talked with a sales rep today and he gave me a good rate of $300 monthly for unlimited advertising for a select trade / specialty. He even threw in free credit card processing. To me, this sounds like a good deal as most of my jobs would be pulling in way over $300 which would then offset the monthly charge. Can anyone share any experiences they have had with AngiesList from a contractors point of view?

    Getting Over The Initial Hurdles

    Hi all,

    I was wondering if anyone has some advice on getting past a major hurdle I've run into: Finding clients.

    I recently started a small, one man shop to manage Google Ads for various businesses. I've been up and running around 4 months now. And ironically, while there is a ton of things to get done (forming an llc, learning how to run a business, etc.) the single biggest issue I am having is finding new clients to grow my business with.

    I know once I get established with several customers it becomes much easier to scale, as I can ask for referrals, reviews, etc. But what do I do to get to that point?

    I've tried a few things: Obviously, Google Ads was my first thought. Only issue is in my niche the big companies all run fairly intense campaigns that I just don't have the capital to compete with at this time.

    Facebook ads was my next thought, but I am not familiar with the platform just yet. I'm planning on learning, but that's more long term option.

    Blogging, etc is also a good strategy, but I need clients now, not 6 months to a year from now after I've developed a following of some sort.

    The classic cold email was also super high on my list, until I found out about email warming and delivery rates being effectively zero without warming up an inbox first. Which takes about 3 months. So that strategy is definitely on the table and going to be used, but is also slightly more "long term" for lack of a better way to describe it, since it isn't that long.

    I actually have a client right now (my only one so far) that was someone I happened to know that needed the service. But he's the only person I know that does, otherwise I would reach out to others that need it. He is thrilled with the performance I'm getting him, so I know that I can do a good job.

    I just need help getting in touch with the right customers and feel like I've hit a wall.

    So, to restate my question: If I wanted to find 5-10 new clients by the end of May, how would I do it? Do I resign myself to the fact that all this setup is going to take a long time? Or are there other ways? I'm sure I'm not the first person to find myself in this position.

    My ideal client is an E-commerce store, or someone who sells online.

    Hi! 👋 My name is Jennifer and I work with a non-profit. Our non-profit was established in early 2020, right before the pandemic. Thus, we delayed fundraising efforts until 2021. So, we're excited to kick off developing and funding the organization this summer.

    Create with Care is a non-profit organization that benefits people with marginalized identities; each project supported by Create with Care emphasizes equity-driven, universal design. "Universal design" is the concept that any environment should be designed to meet the unique characteristics and needs of ALL people regardless of their race, color, creed, nationality, gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, or ability. Thus, each Create with Care project embodies universal design as a fundamental component of facility and program operations.

    This summer, we'll be funding project Camp4All. This project is in the midst of acquiring a 120 acre parcel of land that was previously a Boy Scout Camp and will need significant renovations to meet the project goals. Project Camp4All aims to create an inclusive campground that embodies universal design. This means that all facilities will be ADA accessible, all showers/bathhouses will be individualized and all gender, signage will include braille, etc. In addition, I will be leading cohorts of marginalized college students (LGBT+, transgender, POC, etc.) each summer; this cohort will earn course credit and provide them an inclusive environment in which to learn about outdoor recreation management.

    Agreement for twice per month billing on a contract basis, question about timing and method

    I'm used to just receiving a direct deposit automatically as an employee so this is new to me. I have been contracted for 4 months through my LLC. The payment term has this:

    TheirCompany will pay MyLLC a week-rate of: $Amount
    paid in arrears on the 15th and last day of every month (or the preceding bank business day)

    I was not asked for my bank details so I assume I have to request payment. Ie invoice them before every pay period. The timing is unclear to me, as is the method of payment.

    1. Should I request we fill out another agreement for payment via ACH? I prefer this to checks in the mail
    2. Is the invoice sent on the 15th and last day? Or in advance of these dates by say, one week to allow for payment handling?

    HELP! Want to remove Father from the business!

    So Family run business for the past 8 years. Originally started by my Father and I as 50/50 partners. The business quickly took off and a year later brought my younger brother in and gave him 10% ownership. The business was great for years and was generating 7-figure revenue annually. In the past 2 years or so revenue has steadily declined to the point we're now losing about 4k a month and are on pace to be out of business in the next 8-10 months.

    My brother and I are in our 30's and cannot afford to lose this company! We have families to support for years to come. Our Father is turning 65 this year and within a year of retirement. We completely disagree with our Father on why the business is failing, and I mean completely disagree. He is in denial and sees no issue with the business itself (don't ask me how). We know that we need to get better across the board. This company needs massive change and is desperate for cash flow. He's not concerned like we are because as it stands the company while failing still has enough runway to pay him a full salary for maybe up to a year if we're lucky. And when it finally goes out of business he can just slide off perfectly into retirement. Me and my brother will then be left drowning.

    Over the 8 years of business, my brother and I have grown a ton and now just have complete 180 different approaches to business and we simply can no longer co-exist with our Father in the company. There is literally no compromise anymore, we tried. Currently, the ownership percentage is as follows:

    Me 42.5%

    Father 30%

    Brother 27.5

    Between my brother and I, we own 70% and own the majority share and have the power over my father to remove him from active involvement and can control his salary. This company is starved for cash flow and we need to drastically reduce our Fathers salary. We've had very heated discussions where he is insulting and very disrespectful to us and we're tired of it. As it stands he is willing to drop to 40k annually and have no responsibilities.

    We still don't think that's right at 40k considering he will have no active involvement or responsibilities and will be free to use his time elsewhere. We want to work out a "pension type" of calculation for his salary which comes to about 1k a month, max of 1.5k a month. He would receive that forever into retirement as long as we're in business and still keep his 30% ownership profit cut. Considering we're a small business and currently failing business I honestly feel that is VERY fair! We know he won't willingly accept that so we're at the point where we may need to use our power and just make it the case, unfortunately. Any tips or guidance?

    I'm starting a small consulting business with some Canadians. How can we structure our company to keep our tax process as lean as possible?

    Hey guys! I'm starting an IT Consulting business in the US and could use some guidance as what type of corporation would be best for my situation. I am not seeking legal advice, just looking for a starting point for my research. I will likely end up hiring a professional but want to be as prepared as possible so keep the cost to a minimum.

    About the Business

    • The business is an online IT Consultancy with a mix of US and Canadian owners.

    • We plan on incorporating in Delaware, US.

    - The person incorporating the company has a permanent US address in WA

    • The company would be doing business with Canadian and US customers.

    • We will not have an office, everyone will be working remotely from the US and Canada, but our official base can be anywhere.

    Goals:

    • We want to simplify taxes for the owners as much as possible. The Canadians do not want to file personal taxes in the US. Ideally we would pass through taxes to individuals who can then file in their own country. Each owner would invoice the company respectively and after said consulting expenses, the corporation will not have any net income.

    • We want to simplify business operations as much as possible.

    • We want the business structure such that ownership is clear. We want all 7 owners to have an equal stake in the company.

    • We have no interest or need for investors.

    At this point I am not sure if we should be looking at forming an LLC or a C-Corp.

    LLC

    It looks like if we form an LLC with foreign owners and are doing business in the US, the Canadian members may have to file personal taxes in the US. Will this complicate things for the Canadian owners? Are there fees associated with Canadians filing personal income tax in the US?

    I also read that that foreign owners may be able to avoid paying personal taxes in the US if there is a written consultant's agreement: "A positive point to make is that foreign owners may act as consultants to the LLC under a written Consultant's agreement completing all consulting work within their home country and billing the LLC in the United States for this service. By doing so, it may be possible to eliminate profits thus avoiding some taxation, as well as U.S. situs (located) earnings, which would be subject to the U.S. tax regime, even for non-residents."

    Would this consultant's agreement mean that the Canadian owners would not have to file personal income tax in the US?

    C-Corp

    While the C-Corp provides a much clearer ownership structure, it seems like there may be a bunch of operational overhead that we don't want to deal with such as filing corporate taxes and any corporate ceremonies.

    Is it common for small online service businesses with cross-border owners to form C-Corps?

    Is a C-Corp going to simplify taxes for all parties involved and operations or complicate them?

    Hoping for advice with business finances

    Hello all,

    A close relative of mine runs a small business that was deeply effected by the impact of covid. He has a small business that employees a crew of around 5 people. When his business had a sudden drop of income he didn't apply for a government loan. Instead he pulled money from his personal brokerage account and paid his employees directly using that money. Over the course of a year he pulled roughly 40 thousand dollars out of this account to do so. He's a kind hardworking person and did not fully understand that capital gains taxes had not been applied on these withdrawals. I'm wondering if there are any tax write offs he can use to his benefit for his business to offset the capital gains tax he'll now have to pay personally. I realize this was probably a dumb financial decision. But my relative is just a caring person who didn't want his employees to lose their jobs, and also happened to be very lucky making a profit trading stocks while not being very experienced with the associated taxes. At this point he has not applied for any kind of assistance from the government for PPP loans. Any advice is greatly appreciated by our family. We were just made aware of this situation.

    Clothing business owners: what % people order the wrong size?

    For people who've run an ONLINE clothing business, I just wanted to know what percentage of people want to exchange clothes based on the fact that they ordered the wrong size? Just an approximation :)

    I know that the industry average for returns are 15-30% but I wanted to know how many are because of the wrong sizes?
