I hate working with people that care about their jobs

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:23 AM PDT

I've realized that the this is a common denominator across the financial sector. Public accounting is a particularly bad area, but pretty much any fund or anything similar is full of people that are obsessed with their jobs. Just today I had a director skip taking her kid to get vaccinated because it clashed with a client meeting. Like, that's your fucking kid. People will be "always online" checking emails at all times of the night and even on vacation. People are legitimately invested in the performance of a company that would give them the fucking boot as soon as it became beneficial for them. I don't understand if I am the crazy person that is just working for a paycheck and to live the rest of my life, because everyone seems to care about their thankless jobs punching numbers into excel sheets so fucking much. I'm realizing now that for the sake of my sanity I need to find a workplace where most people are like me - for whom work is a necessary evil to live the rest of their lives.

There's an inverse relationship between happiness and your likeliness to pass the exam, the more miserable you're studying, the more prepared you're going to be and the higher likelihood you're going to pass.

My professors killed my curiosity in accounting

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:03 PM PDT

Currently, I'm having a hard time in my classes because of my professors. I don't think they want us to learn.

Why do professors brag about students failing their tests?

How can we learn from our mistakes if we don't see what problem or multiple we got wrong in tests and quizzes?

Accountants in Ontario - Business Accounting to CPA?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:04 PM PDT

    Hey, r/Accounting!

Looking for some advice related specifically to Canada, or maybe Ontario if things are slightly different here than the other provinces

first my background - I'm currently a part time (approx 7 shifts a pay period) xray tech at a hospital, living in an apartment with my common-law partner. Hopefully soon we'll be able to more evenly split rent as she will be starting a new job soon, and I'll be able to save more money. Money is tight however and it will be incredibly difficult to start at the bottom with university, and I have no university courses or degrees.

Anyways I was looking at one of the colleges (any of them really) that offer business accounting diploma programs. They are within my price range, but they are only college level and a diploma program, and I would definitely want to work towards a CPA.

I guess my question would be where can I go with just a business accounting diploma. Ontario Colleges lists some specialties to go from the business accounting diploma, but some are related to CPA like the forensic accounting, and it also links to the CPA canada website. When I try to find a career path or 'how to' CPA it's all related to university and a business degree focused on accounting.

So if I start with a college diploma will I be able to advance to better/higher paid position? How can I use a diploma to work towards a CPA? What kind of jobs would I be able to do with the business accounting diploma and how high could I advance without university? Do any universities even consider the business accounting diploma if I want to get a degree?

I would love to hear from anyone who can clarify some things for me

    thanks!

Thinking of making switch to Government

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 06:36 PM PDT

To those who have made the switch to government, I am looking to do the same. Below is a little bit about myself

1.) I've been in private for about 6 years. (Never worked at a B4 or a firm) a.) Most of my duties have been preparing financial statements (creating JEs, balancing ledgers, reconciling cash, etc.)

2.) Currently a senior accounting at my current company.

3.) I currently do not have a masters or CPA.

4.) I'm starting a family soon and am looking to to be able to spend time with my future kid and not be so burnt out. I currently work 10-14 hour days and just don't see how I can juggle that with having a new born and still keep my sanity.

5.) I have never been the auditor, I've always been the auditee.

    My questions to the group are as follows;

1.) What GS level should I be looking at with my experience/lack of further education?

2.) Would I have to eventually obtain a masters to get to a GS-9 or above?

3.) Since feeling a little burnt out from all of the JEs/preparation/deadlines of financials, are there any accounting roles in government that are not constantly preparing these?

4.) If I so happen to apply and get accepted for a position as an auditor, is there on the job training that will help me excel at said position? Or do I need the prior experience to even be considered a candidate?

All answers are welcome. Apologies if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find anything in the days I've spent looking for this info.

what was your first Accounting Internship?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:51 PM PDT

Hi! I'm a Junior in university majoring in Accounting and thinking about applying for internships. But actually when I look at the job description, I feel so discouraged. Like what if I'm too dumb for it or I mess something up really bad?? I know everyone makes mistakes... it's just my own personal self doubting, but hopefully the people there can guide me? What was your first accounting internship and how did it go? :)

(and omg hopefully this post doesn't bother anyone LOL... last time I posted on here, someone called me a bitch...)

GAAP revenue recognition Q: how important is it to have individual customer deferred revenue burn-down?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 06:45 PM PDT

I have been running finance for my companies for a long while.

Usually, before the company gets big enough for audited financials, I run revenue recognition. The way we do it now is that we just look at the recognized revenue report in Chargebee for the end of the period and do a journal entry in QBO for the total to debit deferred revenue in BS and credit Income in P&L.

Now the argument I got into today with another exec was that we should be doing journal entries for all individual customers not just one for the total.

What is the right way to do it. We are going to seek reviewed financials for this year, given the board wants us to start doing that. Audited financials likely we will have to do in 2-3 years at our growth.
