Anyone else seeing a lot of turnover right now? [Industry]

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

We just had our 8th staff accountant quit today (F500 company) in the last few months. ~75 accountants (staff/senior/manager level) in the company.

I assume these accountants are all off starting jobs at companies who are also experiencing high turnover (how else would they all be finding jobs so easily?).

I suppose turnover begets turnover, but this seems out of the ordinary. I know everyone is burnt out. Is everyone just taking each other's job that we were so frustrated/burnt out that we quit?

It's like a giant game of corporate hot potato.

For all you that went through another busy season

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Welp, the end is near for me

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:23 AM PDT

Performance review went horrible. Was told was my college degree even real :/ .

I'm only 5 months in with any accounting experience and they knew that when i got 'hired' (on a probation period for 6 months for new hires) . I've asked questions and written down both my questions and their answers all the time. Ive asked for them could u kindly take at least 20 - 30 mins out of 1 day out of the week to tell me how I'm doing / review what I've worked on, and I've never received feedback :// . Their faces scrunch up whenever i try to ask questions (even simple ones imo) .....

I absolutely dread coming into work every morning. Was it really necessary to ask me "Am I going to have to review everything you've ever worked on?"....... Umm, I would hope so? I don't understand why u would let me audit 3 clients and go through audit procedures by myself and i have no previous experience ever. And then shit on me when there's errors.

Fuckkkkk im so ready to get out but 5 months in public accounting might as well be no experience at all :(

Edit: Yes I understand busy season everyone is working... but (1) 20 minutes out of 13 hour workdays really gonna kill u? I'm not asking you to hold my hand the whole way, but please, when u tell me to refer to PY WPs, why are they hard keyed and have no references of what the info is based off from :/

[CAN] CRA is going on a hiring spree for new auditores

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:41 PM PDT

Hi my Canuckia peoples, CRA's doing a big hiring push right now for AU-01 positions. I'm sure probably half of you know this, but for those who don't:

Since the AU designation requires a bachelor's degree and 4th-year financial accounting, it tends to be quite a bit less competitive than other government jobs. Added bonus is, because some tax service offices weren't able to have any students in for a whole year (and that's where many new AU hires come from), there is significant need, it sounds like. (Someone I know from my old workplace was saying they're pretty hard up this year and planning on hiring a tonne of people.)

AU-01 work can be quite variable, and I can speak from my own experience that AU-01 work in Income Tax Act audit is mostly indirect verifications of income (analyzing bank statements, etc.), but I feel like the CRA gets a worse rap than it deserves as a workplace.

EDIT: If you do decide to apply and if you get called for an interview, go over to the subreddit r/CanadaPublicServants and look up their interview advice. Government interviews are weird and from what I understand quite easy to fail if you don't do them right (but easy to pass if you do).

    Dilemma of Leaving Public

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:15 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I need some feedback from you all on what to do that's best for me, my mental health, and my career.

I'm finishing up my third busy season at a top regional firm. I'm an audit senior (first busy season with the title). My second busy season ever I in-charged all of my jobs and it was extremely hard and only got a cost of living raise due to "COVID" which was a kick in the nutts. Meanwhile I learned that the firm grew by ~25% over the last year. We've been promised a market adjustment but I don't expect it to be that generous.

I have ~60k in student loans and am running out of patience for working 60/65 hours a week and not getting out of my student loan holes. And yes, I know, once you make partner then you make so much money. But I don't want to be broke while I am in my 20s and without kids.

So I am contemplating heading out of public but don't know what route to go. I think the end goal for me would be CFO (not a public company). I don't mind working long hours, I just want to feel compensated. From talking to people in the market for hiring, it seems like there might be 3 routes for me. 1. Go to industry as a senior accountant and learn the ropes of the GL and etc. 2. Go in as a senior financial analyst and try to work my way up 3. Try to land and FPA gig (it feels like this would be the hardest but also what's most interesting to me).

So any feedback on what might be the best route to CFO is greatly appreciated.

    Maintaining motivation/regaining it?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 04:20 PM PDT

How the hell is anyone remaining motivated during WFH. The first 3 months were quite good, all training etc. Next 3 months not so bad, it's winter and I don't have to get up or anything. But now, firms extended WFH until at-least July. I think i'm going to lose it.

I'm auditing a client that's split into 4 separate entities, so I literally work on the exact same working paper 4 times every single day. No-one ever had time for social conversation, what am I meant to do?!

I find myself more & more distracted each day just going downstairs to get food or pacing around my room.

What do you guys do to focus on this? Especially considering I see so many people say they hate it, how the fuck do you motivate yourself to do it then?! I actually quite enjoy my work, but I just cannot keep focused????

    Any F1 team Accountants here?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:42 PM PDT

    (Or other Motorsport teams)

I'm pretty interested in Motorsport, specifically F1. Anyone here currently or previously work for one of the teams? Or know someone who does?

How did you get on with them? I noticed they mostly are located in the EU, if you weren't from EU how did that work? How many years of experience did you have when they hired you, if any?

    Thanks :)

Pretty sure I’m about to be put on a pip. Never been more depressed in my life.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:53 PM PDT

Basically, I went from jackson hewitt to a small firm doing admin to a larger firm and now an even larger firm.

    I'm 4 months in.

In my interview I made clear most of my experience was in individuals and non-profits. When they hired me on they said specifically that they would be willing to train me in corporations.

Now I'm working on high net worth companies and just killing myself to get stuff done. Basically working 60-70 hours a week every week because a lot of this stuff I just don't understand. I ask a question they tell me to do SALY which would be great if I could understand what the girl before me did...when I get a review note they tell me to review on my own time.

I just had a review and the manager asked me about my resume, more or less implying that I lied to be here. I've never been more disappointed, sad, angry, and just depressed in my professional career. She like implied that she was going to look at my resume to see if I lied about it.

Any government job people can recommend. I think I'm done with public accounting. This just isn't worth it anymore.

Can I back out of an internship I've agreed to?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:14 PM PDT

I was offered an internship at a mid-tier firm and the only agreement I signed is one about confidentiality. It was scheduled to start early June and be 40 hours a week. They just notified us that the internship will only be 5 weeks instead of 10 and 20 hours a week instead of 40.

My question is this: Can I back out of this internship and pursue one with a different firm that's offering a 40 hour per week internship? I figure if the firm is going to act only in their best interest with little notice I should do the same. Would I be burning a bridge with this company if I did so?

Got a "temporary" job in accounting dept. after applying for months

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:55 PM PDT

Hello, a little background. I just got my bachelor's degree in accounting a few months ago and started applying for jobs aggressively. After applying for many different jobs, I got desperate and lowered my standards to anything that has to do with accounting and that didn't necessarily require a degree. Even after lowing my standards I found it hard to get a entry level position with no experience. After applying to 200+ jobs I eventually got a job as a accounting assistant. Now it was made very clear to me in the initial interview that this was a 3 month position. But after working there for a while, it seems to be common practice for the company to hire temporary and then make them permanent employees later on. The way that some members of the accounting dept. talk to me, they seem to assume I will be offered a full time position but it's really not up to them in the end and I'm not sure how much they are really in the know. My pay right now is pathetic for my education which I should expect with a entry level job. My current plans are to reach out at the end of the three months and see if they are interested in giving me a full time position and if they are willing to pay me a fair salary for my degree and what I bring to the table. "I've been finding faster ways to do certain things in the 1 month I have been here and have made the accounting dept. run more efficiently". Now here is where it gets very complicated. The company defines me as a contractor, so as a result I get no benefits and am forced to pay more taxes at year end. However, with the way I am employed and how they manage me, I am 100% classified as a employee and not a contractor according to the IRS terms. Therefore, what the company is doing is illegal and I can report them within two years of employment to force them to pay the taxes I owe plus compensation for benefits I should of received, not to mention unemployment if they decide not to keep me. However, I don't want to upset the company and I only want to resort to this if they don't make me a full time employee or offer me a salary worth accepting. I would consider doing it anyway just to get the tax and other benefits I should be receiving, if I could do it anonymously but it doesn't look possible to remain anonymous. I had another idea since I'm not the only contract employee here being misused. There is another contract employee who has been screwed over and has been working as a contact employee for 1 year which is ridiculous. From what I understand, the dept. he works in screwed him over and not the company itself so this reputation hopefully doesn't apply to my side of things. Anyway, he is leaving soon to finish school so if he knew about all this it could be very beneficial for him and if I ticked him off in a very low key way or gave him advice but told him he didn't hear it from me, then I could possibly force the company to prematurely make me a permanent employee and pay for my taxes/benefits up to this point. The downside is, I'm not sure if I can convince them to give me the salary I want this early on. Also, This company has multiple contract employees and a history of hiring employees as contact employees starting out. If the company is forced to pay for missing compensation for all these employees plus fees and taxes along with possible unemployment, then they are likely to take a very big financial hit which won't help my case when arguing for a fair salary.

It seems to me that waiting for the 3 month period to end before taking any action is the safest way to approach this. I could mention some of this to the higher ups to make them aware and try to help them, however, I heard one of the accountants mentioning something about this the other day on the phone with someone, so I have to assume they already know or at least don't understand the severity of it. Any advice is much appreciated, sorry for the long post.
