    Accounting Agreed?

    Agreed?

Happy 30th birthday to me! Just landed my dream job with my dream company! Public accounting here I come!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:10 PM PDT

My GPA isn't stellar. I'm going to be freshly 30 when I start. I didn't go to a major school. I had to do my first two years at a tech school due to financial aid punishment from when I was younger. I never in a million years expected a firm of their quality to even notice me. Yet here we are. I cried a good bit.

Hopefully this is permitted. Just wanted to share some good news.

I can’t possibly be the only audit ‘manager’ struggling?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:59 PM PDT

    Got promoted 6 months ago.

I was an absolute bull as a senior. I Would get absolutely anything done, under any pressure. Bring it on. I still had the fire in me.

This manager shit just hit different. Can't explain

Perhaps It's just a rough patch, I don't know. But fuck, I've lost every will for the job.

One particular tight first year project with an absolutely immovable deadline broke me.

Now the job is ending but I still have a shit load of projects which I abandoned and still need to pick up; and clients and partners to freaking pacify.

Big ups to those who enjoy this

How to remind yourself it’s just a job? (Big 4)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 03:17 PM PDT

Need some encouragement. I haven't had it nearly as bad as other associates I'm sure, so I'm sorry if I seem bratty. I am grateful for my life and the people in it, but I am struggling. I started in Jan 2020 and my last several snapshots over the last year contain basic stuff I shouldn't be getting:

-communicate better and check in regularly with seniors/mgrs: I swear if I hear this one more time I'm gonna lose it. I communicate with the people I'm directly working with, but does a team of 20 people need to know every little thing? It's like they want a play-by-play of every piss I take

-volunteer more to handle issues: I just don't want take on work unless I'm sure I can complete what I already have. Is that wrong? I also struggle with how to prioritize work/what to get done first. I ask for guidance and am often misled (they tell me to work on one thing and then are asking for updates about something else)

-try to resolve issues yourself: if I'm reaching out for help I have most likely tried to fix it myself. Or I figured it's an easy question for a senior to answer and would save me 40 minutes of spinning the goddamn wheels everyone talks about

-do more trainings/start to understand what you're doing and why you're doing it: this I actually agree with. I have no idea what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. And I don't have time to put in the effort to understand because I'm too busy trying to get the work done. It also doesn't help when half the work is completed by service delivery centers and I'm meant to review testing they completed/answer their questions. Don't they know we haven't ever completed the testing either and probably would have the same questions for the senior? I am almost 1.5 years in so I don't expect much. People say it will start to just to click. It hasn't yet

This has all led me to just start doing the bare minimum. Maybe they've started to notice, but I just didn't want to sacrifice my sanity anymore. I wake up with a stomach ache everyday worried that someone's messaged me. I can't find hype motivation to do a good job. I have enough in my personal life to keep me distracted from work (house hunting is torture). I don't know why I'm even surprised that my performance reviews are the same level of crappy that I am feeling inside.

This whole job is about balance and I can't seem to achieve it. Get the work done quickly, but make sure it's quality work. Take time to resolve issues yourself, but don't take too long to bring it up to seniors. Work independently and take ownership of your assigned work, but volunteer to take on more and help others. We can be flexible with your schedule, but just tell us in advance about every meal/doc appt/bathroom break/house showing/meeting that is completely unrelated to the job and nobody's business/etc. Except the mental breakdowns, don't tell us about those.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I know many others have gone through this too. I have no one to talk to. I don't plan on staying forever so I should just be able to let all this roll off my shoulder right? Easier said than done. I've struggled for months, in work and in personal life, and I can't seem to dig myself out of this. I think it will be better once I move. I need a fresh start.

How do you deal with ruts? How do you remind yourself none of this really matters because it's just a job? How do you take criticism and either apply it effectively or just put it out of your mind?

Got fired and took Big 4 Job

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 12:08 PM PDT

I was recently let go from my job in a small public firm. Basically because two managers bought out one partners book of business and they decided to cut my overhead. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I was able to land a job with the Big 4. Some of you might think that is crazy to go there but I took such a rocky path into public accounting and call me crazy again I love it and see so much opportunity.

    Just got a new job!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:04 PM PDT

Y'all, I just was offered a new job that's paying 8k more than my current! This is after being given a 12% raise this year at my current job.... even when they gave me a raise I was being underpaid. And now I have a fancy new Job!

I feel bad though. Our director just quit and now is not a good time for them for me to quit... but there is more money in the other accounting job.

What does it mean to “set boundaries” and “stand up for yourself” in PA?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:41 PM PDT

I always hear the line: "make sure to set boundaries and stand up for yourself, or else the firm/your team will abuse you"

How do you do this in practice? I feel as though I'm in a situation where I need to do this now, but my team is severely understaffed. What do I say?

"Sorry manager, but I don't think I can audit the equity work paper. I'm already doing too much."

We SHOULD have one more staff and one more senior, but we don't, and I'm stuck with shouldering the burden of the work. Cause otherwise, no one will do it.

What can i reasonably do here? Tell them to "Add another staff, or I quit?" The workload is starting to feel very unrealistic but I feel as though there is no other option to make it better, unless if I just pull the plug and head to industry

Has you ever declined/reconsidered a job offer because your potential colleagues/boss were too attractive? Should it ever be a reason?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:34 PM PDT

I know it won't be first or last time it'll happen to me, but a few weeks ago I declined a job offer partially because the guy I would've reported to was ridiculously attractive (not to mention extremely bright and friendly). His boss was also extremely attractive. I would've worked extremely closely with both of them. I know that most people from the Big 4 are good looking but it's as if the company that offered me a job had been scouting for male models from the Big 4 or something. I was at the Big 4 as well but it was for a brief period, and I'm definitely very average looking.

I would've been the only woman on the team so that's another reason why I ended up declining the offer. I find that I'm a lot less distracted and more vocal when I work with women or average looking/old men.

    Accounting nightmare

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:24 PM PDT

Doing some work for a young private corporate client who's ledger is riddled with errors and missing transactions. Hasn't ever closed their books. Reconciliations are hit and miss. I'm day 4 on the job and I'm very concerned about accounting data quality.

What's the best approach to this situation?

It could take months to get them cleaned up and the company is going live on Netsuite in 90 days so any issues not addressed will just spill over.

Can you come into the office early in order to leave early?

I hear a lot of people in public will come in at 9 AM and leave at 11 PM ish during busy season. Are there any people who come in early (say 5AM) in order to leave earlier? Is it allowed?

    Hating PA

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:29 PM PDT

Anyone here that works in PA that hates their life every single day? Is it a bad idea to quit and take a few months off to recharge? I'm starting to lose all interest in this field. For those that love their PA job, what motivates you to wake up every morning? Auditing honestly blows.
