Tenant negligence led to burst water pipe

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 07:02 PM PST

Hey all, in a bad situation. I have a tenant who rents a small mobile home. She's elderly and has a Section 8 voucher. Very sweet lady, also very poor.

Her furnace stopped working, and instead of contacting me about it, she decided to go stay with her son for two days despite it still being winter in Maine. queue me bashing my head into a wall

The pipes froze and burst. The whole kitchen and about half of the living room are currently drenched in clean water. The furnace is not running and this water will likely all freeze.

Can anyone shed some light on how to approach my insurance company about this situation? I fear they won't cover this since it's a result of negligence.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    Quick HO Question - TX

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 07:10 PM PST

    Location: Texas

Hello my fellow insurance persons! I'm not only fairly new to the insurance industry (renewing my P&C license for the first time next month!), but I also work specifically in commercial lines processing paperwork day in and day out. Please excuse my stupid question, I know next to nothing about my own personal Homeowners insurance.

We bought our first home last year and we have been lucky so far to not have a loss due to all the freezing that happened in Texas. Unfortunately, we do have a tree that has 3 snapped branches due to heavy snow. I was finally able to schedule someone to come out tomorrow to give us an estimate on cutting the branches out and hauling them off when I had a concern.

This particular tree is on our side of the property line, but some of the branches hang over a neighbor's roof. If one of these branches fell and damaged their roof, I would be liable, yes? Would my insurance policy cover this situation?

We have a Homeowners policy through Nationwide. I pulled up the policy language and this is what is says:

    A. Coverage E - Personal Liability

If a claim is made or a suit is brought against an "insured" for damages due to an "occurrence" resulting from negligent personal acts or negligence arising out of the ownership, maintenance or use of real or personal property, we will:

    1. Pay up to our limit of liability for the damages for which an "insured" is legally liable. Damages include prejudgment interest awarded against an "insured"; and

    2. Provide a defense at our expense by counsel of our choice. We may investigate and settle any claim or suit. Our duty to settle or defend ends when our limit of liability for the "occurrence" has been exhausted by payment of a judgment or settlement.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I should be proactive and have all the branches over the neighbor's roof removed (none look to be in bad shape, but neither did the ones that snapped under weight of snow), or let them stay.

Any and all help is appreciated. Please let me know if further information is needed!

Auto Insurance , 3 individuals, 3 vehicles, same household, separate policies, restricted drivers

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 03:08 PM PST

Hello everyone, so I'm in a situation where a family policy isn't ideal but not out of the question. Ideally i'd like to avoid having everyone under one policy, I can explain if needed. So my question is, can 3 people living under the same household, each have their own policy with different carries, insure their own vehicle, and exclude the other household members and still be covered if they drive another household members vehicle? so for example

Household consists of members A ,B, & C - each house hold member has a vehicle registered under their own name.

Member A has members B & C as excluded drivers on their policy

Member B has members A & C as excluded drivers on their policy

Member C has members A & B as excluded drivers on their policy.

If household member A drivers B or C's vehicle. will A's policy cover the vehicle in the event of an accident?

I do freelance work, client wants me to have a bunch of insurance. What should I do?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:49 PM PST

I do freelance work as a web developer in Colorado. I work from home. I recently got an offer from a new client as a contract/as needed employee but they want me to have a lot of insurance. No one else has required this. It will increase my monthly expenses by $100 a month at least.

Commercial General Liability Insurance including completed operations:Each Occurrence Limit - $1,000,000General Aggregate Per Project - $2,000,000Products/Completed Operations Aggregate - $2,000,000Personal and Advertising Injury - $1,000,000Umbrella or Excess Coverage Each Occurrence Limit - $1,000,000Workers Compensation Insurance Employer's Liability Limit - $1,000,000Contractor's Errors & Omission Limit - $1,000,000

    1. I cant find a policy online that includes an umbrella/excess.
    2. I think its ridiculous that I should include workers comp. The client says that if I am injured at my workspace in my home they could be liable and its standard practice to require subcontractors to carry the same insurance they carry for their business. The client could drop me at any moment and I could be over insured with things I dont need. Could I cancel it at that point?
    3. What is the average cost of these things and do you have any recommendations?

    Leased car stolen

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 03:55 PM PST

    Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I had my car stolen couple of days ago, in toronto. I have 4 months left on my lease and was intending to buy out the car. I just got off the phone with the insurance company and they have valued the car at 65,000$, but have told me they are dealing with the leasing company. The buyout is about 45,000$ And the leasing company isn't giving me any answers about the difference. They are giving me a bit of a run around and I just want to know if I am entitled to anything?

Blue Cross Blue Shield sent me a bad check

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 09:44 PM PST

If you receive a check from Blue Cross Blue Shield, check with their bank before depositing it. I didn't and it cost me $3450.

Five months after surgery, I received a letter from a medical device provider. They wanted the check that BCBS was sending me to pay for the device. I checked with BCBS and they said the check was being processed. Weeks later, no check, so I inquired again. They will not be paying for the device without prior approval. I explained that I was unaware of the price of the device, that it required prior approval and that the surgery center did not receive approval. They asked for more time. Weeks later I received a check for $3450. I deposited it in my bank account. After a 5 day hold, my account was credited, so I paid the device provider. Then my bank notified me that the check was returned and the amount was removed from my account. I filed a complaint with BBB. BCBS suggested that I file an appeal. I live in Tucson, AZ.

Totaled my car today, looking for advice.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 05:45 PM PST

I was in a pretty bad car wreck today (everyone is fine, thank god). My car was totaled. I owe quite a bit of money on the car, but have full coverage and GAP insurance. What's this process going to look like? Will my insurance company (Progressive) just pay off whatever is left on my loan, and GAP covers the rest? Will they issue the money to me or the bank where my loan is from? I'm in Pennsylvania, if this helps. Thank you.

    auto accident

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 08:17 PM PST

    • Edmonton, Alberta

So towards the end of January i was in an at fault accident - the CRV in front of me was braking erratically and while i was to keeping a good space between us, she suddenly slammed the brakes and because of Edmonton winters, my car slid and rear ended the CRV. Her suv just had minimal rear bumper damage however my insurance company told the auto body shop that they'd be writing out the car. I wasn't a registered driver of the car as it was under my dad however, i drive it very minimally (2-5 times a month) some months i'd never drive Ever since then the insurance company made us give a recorded statement and have been implying that we would be liable for all fees like towing if they decide not to cover the claim. i'm wondering if anyone has ever been in this situation or if anyone can give advice as to what to say to the insurance company because technically speaking, the car was fully insured and i know insurance always follows the car and not the driver which is why it's getting me frustrated. Insurance has also been delaying the claim ever since and i'm wondering why they'd be doing this?

    Thank you in Advance :)

Shopping for home insurance and found I get a completely different dwelling replacement cost if I use my wife's information

The replacement cost shouldn't be different for the same property

I then tried at a few other providers and got the same result

    How is this not fraud?

    Renters Insurance Gap

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:59 PM PST

Hello all. I live, and will be staying in Georgia, USA. The lease at my current apartment ends in 45 days. I do not have a new place quite yet. My lease was 13 months but I just realized I only have 12 months renters ins of $10,000. The apartment "required" 13 months to sign but seemingly accidentally let it slip. I could roll the plan over to another property but would be insuring the property a month before I lived there and I'm not even sure what coverage will be required by the future apartment complex. I called my renter's ins company and they said their plans run for 12 months so in order to get only 1 month of coverage I could either pay a full year and get a prorated reimbursement or start a payment plan, pay one month, then cancel. The coverage is for me only and the items covered consist mostly of a room set (bed, desk, wardrobe), minimal kitchen belongings, clothes, a $500 laptop and 2 tvs, snowboard, keyboard (all under $200 each). This seems like a lot, especially while I'm moving, and I kind of just want to look the other way and go without coverage for one month. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is the health insurance denial because it's not necessary or because the code is wrong?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:54 PM PST

Edit: Located in Texas, USA. Using Oscar Health Insurance.

English is not my first language so I still get confused sometimes and health insurance makes it more confusing. My dad received denial below from health insurance.

He lost his eyesight due to hemorrhage and had high pressure in the eye. The surgery and treatment has really helped thanks to doctor. The doctor say shots are necessary to slow down blood vessel growing. He also said monthly shots is the only way to slow it down. So it is confusing it was denied. I worry about my dad's eyesight.

Basis and clinical rationale for the denial: We have received a request for a medication injection called Avastin (bevacizumab). You have swelling in the back of your eye (called macular edema) from diabetes. We reviewed the records received and your benefit plan coverage. We reviewed the medical criteria for this service. Based on this information, this request is not medically necessary. The code submitted is not for use when the requests is for eye injections. Therefore, this request has not been approved at this time. Please speak to your provider about your options for treatment.

    Life insurance exam in PA

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 07:16 AM PST

Hey everyone, I'm currently a junior officer in the military and I am going to leaving in the coming year. My family has been in insurance for four generations and I'm hoping to go into the business myself. However, my father took his exam around 40-45 years ago. I was wondering what the best way to study the exam nowadays. I've read alot of people have been able to pass the exam after a few weeks with certain online courses. I would also like to eventually get my property and casualty. I'm hoping to find something online based to do during the evenings if possible, especially since it seems like most classroom based courses aren't happening in my area because of covid. If online courses aren't effective what are the best alternatives?Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance!

    CAT vs Local?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 06:06 PM PST

    Hey All,

I've been working on the CAT team for one of the larger carriers for 2 years now, and I'm still relatively young. I was looking at possibly switching over to the local side and was wondering what the main differences are? Obviously local would deal with a wider range of COLs, and probably handle more beginning to end, but is the inventory really that different? A lot of people say local is far far worse, is that true? Has anyone here worked both before and can speak on that?

    Thanks!

[Health Insurance/Bill Related] Please help! Just got a surprise bill from my dentist.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 05:42 PM PST

I just got a $1K+ bill from my dentist for services done 10 months ago. From the call with the assistant, I understood that they made an operation error - they were not within network of my insurance plan last year, but they mistakenly thought they were and confirmed I could do the filling etc. with them. They didn't realize that until recently which is why I just got the bills. I called the insurance company and confirmed that is indeed the case. They wouldn't be able to do anything on their end.

According to the assistant, the person who was in charge of confirming the insurance has left the job - not sure if that's true or not... She's very apologetic and willing to offer a discount like 20% something. That's still a lot of money for me to pay. If I knew I needed to pay $$$ for this service, I would switch to another Dr.

Need some advice on how I can dispute this bill if the dentist insists I should pay... Is there any place I can appeal/complain etc?

    Thanks in advance!

    What Is Cash Value?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:25 PM PST

Hello, so I'm currently learning insurance and I'm having trouble understanding what cash value is in a Whole Life Insurance Policy.

From my understanding, cash value is money that can be tapped into while the insured is still living.

    Is this correct?

Also, is cash value money you've put into the policy and it accumulates? I would ask a tutor or something but there aren't any and the book and video isn't going into depth about what cash value is.

Considering getting into Insurance - is this offer any good?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 10:33 AM PST

Howdy! Please delete if this isnt allowed here!

I am considering getting into sales and have been exploring the Insurance world, specifically P&C right now. I am in my mid twenties, a very outgoing extrovert and love building relationships with people and helping them too. I am looking at insurance because I think it is a good product, people need it and I can sleep easy at night after a sale, plus the income opportunity is nice.

I am currently exploring an opportunity with a large independent broker as a corporate agent. I would build my own book of business from scratch utilizing a referral partnership model for all my leads. The starting salary is $40k a year (not a draw they said) or your commission income, whichever is higher of the two, NOT BOTH. I would get about 40% of the company's commission from their various carrier's payout and residual income after year 1 (if Home and auto bundles hit a certain %). They do offer basic benefits like 401k, medical, etc.

Do you guys think this would be a good opportunity as a segway into the industry, or should I look into captive agencies, etc? By going this route, I would be taking a huge pay cut, at least initially. Any advice or thoughts is greatly appreciated!

    Cash Settlement

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 06:48 AM PST

Our basement flooded in September and we had a restoration company redo the basement.

We flooded again and this time are taking a cash settlement.

Restoration was 35k and the cash settlement is a little over half of that.

My question is this, my adjuster just reached out asking how I'd like to proceed. I was under the impression he was having a cheque sent for $xx,xxx.

Should I ever dispute this #? Why would I not want to proceed this way?
