Posted: 07 Mar 2021 06:21 PM PST My wife and I received a relatively small inheritance from a deceased relative ($20,000) and we'd really like to see it grow. We're both self-employed freelancers and so have a decent amount of free time in which to work at running a small side-business or turnkey operation, but I don't really have any knowledge of business ideas within this price range. Some ideas that have been floated are things like opening an unattended car wash, or laundromat, or even a secure storage facility, but I don't think any of these are doable for that amount. Ideally we'd like to get into owning property eventually, and having that as some kind of residual income, but the gap between here and there seems pretty vast without the knowledge of how to get there, so any suggestions of how to get started with this little windfall of savings would be greatly appreciated. Cold Calls - Does it get easier Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:06 PM PST Long deep breath. I have lots of experience cold calling and selling an idea over the phone. I have filled conferences with speakers, gotten sponsors, and set appointments. I hate it. In the past I would spend 10 to 15 minutes between calls getting up the nerve to call the next person. Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:34 PM PST I recently started helping out a little with my parents' small business. They do all their accounting in one huge, confusing excel file which they manually update and balance daily. Invoices, inventory etc. are also done in Excel. They used to use a DOS program for customer orders but started using a cheap, halfway functional POS system. Overall, I would say their business seems like high-functioning chaos. I suggested using something like Quickbooks or Wave for accounting and Payroll. And maybe getting a better POS system as well, since their current one hardly works. However, they said that Quickbooks is too expensive, and they aren't willing to pay high subscription fees for software. And they're not sure if the software is suited for their needs. They also don't like the idea of linkng their banking and financial accounts / data to a third party service due to security concerns. I know a little programming, so they suggested I develop a better POS system for them...that way they wouldn't have to pay subscription fees. I don't know how feasible that is as I'm by no means a professional software developer. So I know that I'm inexperienced, and that my parents have been running their business successfully for many years now. But what I want, ideally, is to find ways to automate / optimize some parts of the business to save my parents time and reduce tedious or frustruating tasks. However, I'm aware that making changes can be diffiuclt, and could just end up being more trouble than good. So is it worth it to consider change? Or "if it ain't broke don't fix it"? Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:16 AM PST Hey guys, I'm an illustrator so new to business side of being an entrepreneur, I've always wanted to start my own little business ^-^ I have a concern that I am not sure how to proceed, so would love your advice? I settled on 'lumicreates' as a handle and 'Lumi Creates' the business name. At the time the .com was taken but not any website so didn't show in google, but I noticed recently it's in use now by a marketing company that's rebranded but there url is not actually their business name. The problem is if I type 'lumi creates' in google now, they take 2 top spots with their website, and my website (I have the .co) doesn't appear at all. It's a bit disappointing, I'm not sure whether I should abandon the name and find a new one? Does anyone know a way to get my website ranked above them for that search seeing as it's not their name? I'm really not sure how to proceed, and what to think/do about this situation. What would you say is important in settling on a name/handle? I just feel I'm stuck to continue along building a brand, not knowing if this is a deal breaker. Thanks so so much! :) x [link] [comments] |
What are your favorite books or study resources for starting a business? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:50 AM PST I'm planning to start a business but as I am not very knowledgable in business I am wondering what books should be added to my study list. There are so many books on starting businesses, and I'm sure they are all helpful, but I would like to know some of your favorites that you swear by! I am looking to open a bar&grill, so a focus on food would be nice, but I am open to any and all knowledge. [link] [comments] |
Looking for unbiased critique of a business idea Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:14 PM PST Hey guys, Hope you're all well. I need some unbiased critique of an idea for a side project I had. I figured going into a category that's a part of everyone's daily lives should be a good idea, hence, I'm looking at EveryoneSleeps.in, a store focused on good sleep. I'm based in India (hence the domain would be everyonesleeps.in, which reads as everyone sleeps in as well). India is the second most sleep deprived nation. While most of it is due to socio-economic affairs and personal habits, a fairly large sum of working indians much like myself aren't get enough ZZZZs because of work. This is the category with enough disposable income to invest in a few products that will overall prove the quality of their lives. My goal is simple - Make sure people sleep better. Sleep is essential to surviving. The most famous scientists, and the most famous despots, to everyone who has existed so far in history - has slept. My products will include sleep aids, such as melatonin patches, natural sleeping aids, sound machines, light therapy glasses, eye masks, sleep inducing chocolates etc. So without casting the net too far, my niche category would be insomniacs. I have researched it, and so far very few people in the region are doing it well, and they're mostly focused on mattresses, pillows etc What do you guys think? Is there something like this that already exists that I might've missed? Does it have the potential to make profit? [link] [comments] |
3 types of people who can’t stay rich for a long time in life Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:29 AM PST Have you ever fallen for "21 din me paisa double" scheme? 3 types of people who can't stay rich for a long time in life
People easily trust & blindly rely on the tips they hear from some of their relatives, friends, and colleagues and start investing. This perhaps is one of the biggest mistakes that people generally do when they start investing in the stock market.
Most of us don't want to hear this, but there really are no quick fixes or short cuts
If you are considering your business or investments as a lottery ticket to get rich, without putting in efforts and time you are definitely going to lose. [link] [comments] |

Landlord charging me equal CAM as other tenant, but I get no parking. Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:36 AM PST I just signed a retail lease in a 2 unit strip mall with a small restaurant next door. The landlord is charging $600 a month for CAM (common area maintenance) to each of the two tenants. There is a small parking lot area with 15 spots. But the landlord stated that all of them are reserved for the business next door, and my customers have to park across the street in the township parking lot. There is no such wording in the lease prohibiting parking lot usage, only signs in each of the spaces that state "x restaurant parking only". If I'm paying CAM, should I have a right to half these parking spaces? [link] [comments] |
Used Personal Bank Account for LLC Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:21 PM PST I've been running a small business for the past year and created an LLC months ago. However, I never opened a business bank account and instead have been transferring money into my personal bank account. Am I in trouble for paying taxes this year? Was that illegal? And how do I fix this? [link] [comments] |

I am constantly worried and afraid that im running my family business wrong. Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:10 AM PST So a little backstory here, So around 3 years ago I left the military and started a small business where I deal with plants and bouquets. Things became better and soon my Mom and Dad both quit their jobs and joined me in running this small florist shop of ours. We started getting a ton of good reviews from our exceptional service on our facebook page and its been keeping us quite busy sometimes. We're even getting leads from far away and people who're wanting to purchase from us online (we don't have an online store). However I find myself being constantly afraid to expand outwards, im afraid that starting a website and a proper online store or running ads would start to overwhelm the business and we will be unable to maintain the same high level of service that we've always had. We've got a large pool of regulars that is really supportive of our business and i am a little afraid that one day we'll lose them and i'll regret not expanding when i had the chance. But at the same time, i feel like the low number of customers would mean that we can devote more time and attention to them which would make them return and spend more. Am I being too paranoid and afraid here? Am I fucking up the business and running things wrong? [link] [comments] |
Construction business sales strategy Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:43 AM PST Hi everybody, I'm putting up a business plan for a construction management company and need your advice. Long story short: - I already have partners with construction companies that can execute the work for me - I have the architects and engineers who will partner with me on the technical side so we can offer full service – from design to construction - Need the sales strategy: I had some success back in the days when I was looking for architects for a construction business – cold calling and cold e-mailing worked quite well (light approach – just politely asking them if they need any help with their construction work). Any advice and mentoring welcomed! [link] [comments] |
What piece of equipment can make a lucrative business? Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:08 AM PST Apart from usual ones like lawnmowers, pressure cleaners etc. I read on another thread about some piece of equipment that could extract all the metal parts from tires and was quite lucrative. [link] [comments] |
How do you recommend keeping your day job while starting a business (that requires business hours?) Posted: 07 Mar 2021 08:40 AM PST I am thinking of starting an email marketing agency of just myself, but I want to keep my job until the work pays better than my day job. Any tips out there for the transition? Has anyone done it without jumping in with 100% risk? Edit: I would not work on building my business during my employer's hours, just on my own time. Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:16 PM PST I tried starting an LLC cleaning service on the side while working a salaried job in NY. I had two cleaners and only had them do 2 cleaning jobs until work picked up at my full time job so i had to discontinue the business. I just had an accountant do my tax returns for my salary job and am reading now that I need to also claim my business' net income on my 1040. I only grossed $377 and didn't make any income as I was paying my cleaners too much. Should I worry about not including this on my personal tax returns? I've already filed my final ST-100, NYS-45, and form 940. [link] [comments] |
Protection of brand name/Trademark Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:59 PM PST Can anyone shed some light regarding trademarks of brands or names? I'm looking into consulting, but not sure if I should go all out protecting my name. What if it doesn't work? Should I still protect it? My initial thought was to get started with consulting for a few months and then look into it if I get a good response. Any thoughts? Totally new to this and I'm learning as much as I can as I go. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Frustrations about impending failure. Advice requested (long post) Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:32 PM PST On year 6 of my own business and it feels like everything is falling apart. Lets break it down some, but before we do, please note, this will be very rant-y and is coming from probably not the best place.. but I am trying Started my company in Jan of 2015. Quickly amassed over 40k in debt that it took until 2018 to pay off. Will never rent space in a mall again, this business is clearly not retain oriented. The business is a product development, service based business, so like many it suffered hard in covid. To compound. I took a day job right at the tail end of 2019. Unfortunately I suffered 2 herniated discs that completely ruin my productivity because of the pain, numbness, etc. We cleared 54k in sales and 13k net profit in 2020, however I did not pay myself, I never have. Now in 2021, my body is not getting better, and due to that it is a work comp case it is also out of my hands how fast it gets better. Because of my injury I have tried to bring on contractors to help and when we think we found THE ANSWER something always seems to happen. Our latest guy, for example, now has pneumonia. A buddy of mine put it in a way that I think best describes what is going on.. We are circling the drain trying to get momentum but every time we try and launch out we get shoved back in. Lets list out some issues: -1099's, no W2's because we cannot afford them -Talent is pretty young, but we cant afford hardened talent -Business is negative 2k+ for the year already -One of our key people is very sick and unresponsive -My back is causing me so many issues including the inability to get a good nights sleep -Our branding guy took on a huge job with Verizon meaning he has all but forgotten about us, so all the work he was doing on the site, social media, etc. is now incredibly limited. He is working, but instead of 10-20 hours a week it may be 3 now. -Have been denied PPP and EIDL constantly, even this round specifically for small businesses because I did not pay myself last year, we could not afford it. And quite frankly I am not sure I am up to the task of it all. We have accomplished so much, the entire team, but it simply has not resulted in anything tangible. Our industry is relatively new (3D printing) and we are working on getting a LMS running for it, but I have to be very conscious of the time I put into it vs. the time I put to literally everything else. I know I am running incredibly thin, and honestly not sure what to do. My best instinct tells me I need a break, but my wallet says you need 10k in sales this month to even afford to put your head down to sleep at night. So I keep burning. I recognize this is going to end in a burnout, this is the common formula for me, and I am not entirely sure how to break it. Any suggestions here? We are working on a complete rebrand but because of my budget I have to wait sometimes. Alas, that time is money for me, however not enough to spend 25k+ to actually bring in a firm to do it. We have the new logo, the new identity, however the website is not done, and we are not really sticking to a marketing plan, no matter how hard I try. Marketing is NOT my strong suit. I can sell, but in a digital world, one where capital expenditures are low, this is something becoming more and more difficult. We hit the first page on google, we are on the map, but the phone never rings (other than spam). I want to run ads, but have no clue where to start. My skills are VERY specialized. I have looked into getting a c-suite team together, but that comes right back to finances not being there to afford such a thing. I am willing to invest in my future, we have liquid capital, but I am constantly afraid of making huge mistakes, mistakes that cost literally years of time. We lost 4 months of my life in the past 2 months if we look at our finances.. Time that is now even harder to come by because of my back. What have you guys done to get out of this seemingly bottomless pit of bullshit and grow your fucking business rather than being drowned by it? Because, shit, I feel like I am drowning, and we aint even busy.. If we fail I am letting so many people down in the process, with the largest being myself. I am not sure I can manage that kind of weight. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make this work. I am not sure who told me, but someone did.. when it feels like you are on the edge of a cliff, just jump. I feel like I am there, but I do not know how to jump, if that makes sense.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
1st and 2nd Draw PPP in the same round; anyone had success with this? Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:06 PM PST I just applied for my 1st PPP draw in January, everything I read suggest you can do your 2nd draw PPP under certain conditions. I have done some inquiries and I was told I had to wait till March to apply again, if I used my first one up. then I was told I had to apply for forgiveness then apply again. Looking for anyone who has had luck applying twice, and or someone who know how to be successful at this. [link] [comments] |
Getting ready for “The pitch”. Need some guidance. Posted: 07 Mar 2021 09:35 PM PST Hey guys So my company is in the grocery and e-commerce space and has started to gain a lot of traction for the fact we will be launching an innovative delivery concept that will allow ASAP delivery without carrying any inventory or have warehousing costs. By the end of 2022, without any investors (we are currently bootstrapped) we will have around 35mil in revenue and 4-5mil in gross profit. I know that with the proper strategic investor we can easily scale up to about 225mil by the end of 2023 (we are currently limited by our current team...as we don't have any. All work is done with the co-founder and myself). We are having a hard time finding a valuation, especially since it has the potential for massive growth in a very short period of time. 225mil in sales will require about 35-45mil in capital, to help put it into perspective. Any thoughts on this? Any help on how to structure a potential deal? All feedback would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
