Neighbor started grass fire, how should I deal with damages? (Texas)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:29 PM PST

Long story short neighbors from street behind mines started a grass fire after some grilling mishap. It spead from their yard onto my nextdoor neighbor and from there it jump to my yard. Luckily FD arrived rather quickly and they stopped it before it spread further into my yard. The only damage on my yard is about a 15ft x 5 ft patch of burnt grass which i really don't care about. The other damage is the wooden fence, about 15 feet of it, got fire damage. This has to be replaced and it's a shared fence with the next door neighbor (where fire jumped from but not where it started). Next door neighbor has it worst, their entire yard is burnt and a great amount of their fence is destroyed. It also burned 3 other neighbors' yard and fences. Thankfully nobody's house was damaged and nobody was injured.

I'm a first time homeowner and never had to deal with these types of situations. Should I file a claim with my homeowner insurance? Will this cause my rates to go up?

Locking the doors with the keys versus the remote?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 03:06 AM PST

So my car has an interesting feature.

If I use the remote to lock the car, it arms the alarm.

If I then use the actual key, poke the door hole with it and unlock the car, opening the door will set off the alarm.

If I then disable the alarm by sticking the key in the ignition, then lock the car by again poking the door hole and twisting, the alarm then doesn't go off if I subsequently unlock the car using the door barrels.

So this begs the question, would I have insurance issues if say, my remote battery dies, and I just resort to using the "Dumb" functions of the key rather than replacing the battery?

Seems to me that the alarm (and potentially the immobiliser) don't seem to be triggered by the door locks, just the wireless function of the key. So locking it potentially doesn't arm these systems if I do it via the door barrels.

I contacted the manufacturer and they seemed confused by my question, I then contacted the insurance company and again they seemed confused by my question.

Hopefully this makes sense and my question makes sense.

The Product Disclosure Statement is not specific on this.

Edit: Australia, QLD, though I don't believe that States have different rules here...never heard of this.

Helpless to GEICO sending $3800 to collections

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 10:35 PM PST

Hi, I really need help, it's been a hard year and I'm approaching the brink at this point.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/lzenc2/geico_invoiced_me_2700_nine_months_after/

I mentioned how GEICO "renewed" my cancelled policy last week, 9 months after cancellation. They bumped my price to $2800 (usual policy was $1090). Now after "internal review from accounting" it's been bumped to $3900 and sent to collections.

I've sent them all the cancellations paperwork that they provided me, all the e-mails, all the screenshots of the fucking timeline saying it was cancelled. I don't have $4000, shouldn't have to pay it and no one is helping me from their phone line. In-person visits are suspended at their office.

    Ex Involved in Insurance Fraud(?)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:26 AM PST

I wasn't sure where to post this, but my friend told me my ex (they work together) was going to buy a fishing license and "accidentally" have his car (worth $60k USD) roll into the lake to collect the insurance money. I assume this is illegal, but how far of an extent does insurance agencies go and investigate, if they even do? He has state farm btw don't know if that helps. What would be the repercussions?

2 claims on one property = 2 deductibles, but 2 max payouts?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:42 PM PST

    Hi All,

I have a property that had a vandalism and sudden peril (both covered) on a property. My agent mentioned because the claims were different, that she'd have to open 2 claims which means 2 deductibles, which I was okay with.

I asked if that meant I then get 2 max payouts $15k each x 2 = $30k given they are 2 claims that happened on the same time, and she said yes. Just seeing if there is an industry standard to this answer, as the adjuster (works for insurance company, not public) mentioned that it typically is 1 max payout of $15k despite 2 claims, because it's the same property? Thank you, New Jersey here.

    Hit by a bus

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:02 AM PST

I was travelling in the outside of 2 rows of cars with a bus on my inside, he moved forward and I moved forward in sequence until we came to a halt in the queue of traffic waiting for the lights to change. The lane the bus was in moved off first, I remained stationary on the outside, as he moved off he came into contact with my front wing causing a scuff type of damage. What I didn't realise until afterwards was he had to move over to avoid a concrete protrusion on his inside. So he hit me instead of this object. The bus company say it was my fault for not driving in a correct manner. (I was stationary)?

Bought a car, but USAA insurance cards still saying the other individuals auto company.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:54 PM PST

I just got a car from a private seller. My address is correct but my insurance card isn't saying my company, USAA.

Is it because the vehicle isn't registered in my name yet/ title not officially signed over to me? I have an appointment with the DMV to get that arranged.

Edit: I am in the USA. State is Texas

Difference between pre-credit risk cover and run in cover ?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:45 PM PST

    I found this Website

In it, it says "run-in cover (pre-credit risk)". Is it similar between run in cover and pre credit / manufacturing risk ? Or are they supposed to be different? In what way are they actually different?

    Is Chubb a shady provider?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:45 PM PST

Was helping a relative go through their insurance policies and as part of the paperwork there was a section on 'terrorism insurance' that dictated that if they did not sign below to explicitly reject terrorism insurance, terrorism insurance would be automatically added to the policy and charged accordingly.

To me this seems like a red flag. First I read a bit about the terrorism insurance and it's more or less useless in my eyes, but the way Chubb went about it feels scummy to me.

Is there any type of short term disability policy I can purchase to use for intermittent leave? (North Carolina)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:18 PM PST

Without going into too much detail, my health sucks. My primary care doctor lovingly calls me her medical oddity and told me she would have no shortage of documentation for my FMLA paperwork, even though I've only been seeing her since late January 2020.

As such, I've been conditionally approved for intermittent FMLA to be used as needed through mid-July, before recertification is needed, as long as I still qualify for leave when I submit the days and times.

My work allows me to use PTO and vacation concurrently with FMLA, but short term disability cannot be utilized unless I am out for a longer period of time.

My current manager is willing to work with me on flexible scheduling if I need to make up hours that I would normally work, which will prove helpful in making my PTO/vacation last longer. However, I foresee a time that I may not be able to do that as easily due to the progressive nature of some of my health conditions. I also worry about a situation where my manager changes, either by transferring to a new department or being assigned a new manager, and I cannot change my schedule as easily.

Is there a type of short term disability policy or some other type of coverage I can purchase on my own that could supplement my income if I need to take unpaid intermittent leave? TIA!

    Home Insurance Help

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:47 PM PST

I've participated on the auto insurance side of things, now soliciting help for a field that I'm completely green in.

My fiancé and I are in escrow and are shopping for home insurance (first-time homebuyers) and several of the insurers are showing three losses on the property within the last year which apparently is disqualifying us from preferred-risk company placement.

After doing some digging, it seems like their reporting is showing two separate claims for the same date of loss, but with only one payout. The seller has provided their disclosures which confirm the two losses and are unsure why it's being reported as three.

Are there any recommended remedies to this situation? Can the seller/seller's insurer do anything to correct the issue?

San Diego, CA for the bot.

Is the car rental insurance offered by the car rental company worth it?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:24 PM PST

I've always been told that the extra insurance that you can purchase with the rental is a scam/over priced.

Our insurance agent has told us in the event of an accident our personal car insurance will cover us but it doesn't cover "loss of use", meaning the rental company will make us pay for the day rate for the car while it is in the shop getting fixed.

Just wondering what the consensus is on this!

    Insuring an abandoned property

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:19 PM PST

Property location: desirable suburb of Chicago, Illinois

My mother passed away, leaving me with a hoarded property she essentially abandoned 4 years ago. It was tagged non-habitable & boarded up by the village a couple of years ago.

I need to insure it until I'm able to sell it.

I'm in the process of clearing it out & should have that done within the next week or so.

What considerations are there in insuring such a property?

    .

Editing to add one of my replies below for visibility:

Despite it's decrepit condition, the property has value. The area is a hotbed for flippers.

I'm partly concerned about preserving the value that is there, and also from a liability standpoint. If the place gets struck by lightning and sets the neighbor's house on fire, or a kid falls down the stairs playing ding-a-ling-ditch, I need to be protected. Oh, and tornados! It's springtime in the midwest!

    Changing Car insurance questions

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:16 PM PST

    Location: Los Angeles, California

Hi, i've been with my current car insurance for the last 5-6 years, and I was comparing other car insurance recently. I have not picked a specific car insurance yet to upgrade to, however i have a few questions.

    1. if lets say i renewed my current car insurance in january and paid for the next 6 months up to june, and I want to change my car insurance in to a different one in March, will i have lost the last 3 months worth of money because i sswitched in the middle of the 6 months?
    2. or different scenario, if i dont do 6 month increments, but i do monthly increment payments, and I pay for my current insurance on the 1st, and then on the 7th of the month i decide to change insurance, will i have lost the last 3 weeks worth of insurance and i am basically driving with 2 different insurances?
    3. another question before i get overwhelmed: when i hire a car insurance broker to shop for my car insurance, i only pay him one one time fee? or will i pay him until he finds me a good car insurance? and when he finds me one and pay for the new car insurance, do i have to call my old car insurance to cancel my policy or does this go automatically?

ps: i was looking into gabi.com. read bad comments about it on reddit, and people prefer car insurance brokers. Is that still the case?

    When to deposit insurance payout?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:08 PM PST

Located in MN, USA. I recently had some damage to my home from a leaking pipe. My insurance adjuster surveyed the damage and issued an estimate for repair costs before the HVAC/plumbing invoices came in. I figured we would correct it to exact amounts when we had that information, but the adjuster actually issued me a check almost immediately.

Well, of course the estimates for the repair work are slightly off (it's an estimate), and who knows how far off the costs for the drywall and carpet repair will be.

Am I supposed to deposit this check and use it to pay these vendors? It might be weeks before the drywall is repaired. Do I keep submitting receipts to the adjuster and hold onto any residual funds?

I guess my real question is how the difference between the estimate and actual costs is typically settled.

Is it still your fault if you were cut off?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:32 AM PST

I understand that 99% of the time it's your fault if you rear end someone. But is it still the case if it was due to them cutting you off?

What if you're doing everything you're supposed to do (ie. not speeding, and keeping enough distance from car in front of you) but someone from the other lane cuts off right in front of you and you rear end them as a result. Who's at fault in this case?

    TIA!

Edit: This is a general question. I have not been in an accident.

Auto Insurance is cancelling due to a previous (not at fault) accident I had with prior insurance

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:27 PM PST

My wife and I recently got a new truck and decided we would add myself as a driver onto her and her parents insurance. Everything was cool until their agent said that the insurance would not add me because of an accident showing up as my fault.

Back story - I had Geico, got rear ended by someone who did not have insurance or registration, they fled the scene, I circled around, found them, and there was a police report filed. Police cited them and submitted the report to my insurance, who I had to use due to the lack of insurance from the at fault party. Geico reimbursed me the deductible as it fell under our coverage and they determined I was not at fault. This was in 2018.

Fast forward to Jan 2021, we get the truck and head over to insure it. Agent says they can't add me unless we have proof it wasn't my fault. I told him I filed the report with the police and my company even determined the other party at fault. I got a letter from Geico STATING it wasn't my fault. We submitted these docs, and it seemed like all was fine.

Now we got a letter saying our policy will be cancelled overall, due to "A substantial increase in the hazard insurance against - requested information not received. Evidence of non-fault accident not provided."

It seems to me like the insurance agent either did not provide the letters I gave him or the insurance is not accepting them (which I find absurd).

    Any thoughts on this?

    Edit: I live in California, 28 y/o.

Need coverage for part time home programming business?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:58 PM PST

    EDIT: Sorry. Ontario, Canada.

I'm moving into a new home in a month and am insurance shopping. I work from home (because of covid) as a developer but I maintain a small home business that sometimes I do some gamedev or small dev jobs with. Nothing big, haven't made any money on it in the last 2 years, and when I have made money it was less then 5k for the year, and very little overhead. I'd like for it to become productive eventually but for now it's nothing but a hobby and I'm focused on the day job.

What's the damage that this business will do to my insurance costs? If I don't bother listing it, do I risk getting declined if my house burns down or is robbed? If I'm going to need to pay more then a couple hundred bucks on insurance I'd sooner close the damn thing.

    Who'd be at fault here?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:41 PM PST

Hey everyone, appreciate your time reading this in advance,

I was driving home last night, and at an intersection, same street but in the opposite direction lane was another guy attempting to turn left. As the pedestrian timer went from 2 to 1 seconds I had already entered the intersection (light was still green) and proceeding straight and the other guy had also started to turn left at the same time, I tried avoiding him but it was not possible. He crashed into the front (driver's) corner of my car and my airbags deployed. My car is destroyed. He came out the car and started yelling "you ran a yellow light. Are you high? Are you crazy?" The witness present was an older lady who initially said that I ran a yellow light and then later changed her words to ran a red light, which sucks for me because I was not even close to running a red and she's the only witness to this case. Who's at fault if they, assuming worst case scenario for me, take her testimony 100% and completely ignore mine? What are the chances of the insurance company saying I'm completely at fault in this case?

    All responses appreciated

    Location is Halifax, NS

SO Forced to remain on my Health Insurance; invalid holder?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:02 PM PST

I was directed here from r/legaladvice. This is taking place in Michigan.

Last year my SO lost their job and we lost our health insurance. We both joined my company's health insurance. My SO got a new job, and was able to get health insurance starting 1/1/21. I contacted my company in mid January, as that is when the new insurance was confirmed. They advised they would need a change of life form and a letter from the new health insurance confirming things to remove my SO and thus lower my payments.

I provided this letter as soon as I got it, in February. Less than 60 days had elapsed, but more than 30 had. A week ago I was advised via email that I had waited too long to provide the letter, and my SO couldn't be dropped from my insurance until November, the next enrollment period. I called and they stuck firm. I asked if my SO had died or we had a divorce and I'd notified them later would they extend the deadline and they said yes, they are more lenient on some types of life change events. They advised they would contact me again today (hasn't happened yet).

A friend who previously worked in medical billing advised it didn't sound legal, and would make my SO an 'invalid holder'. Is this legal? Has anyone else had a similar circumstance they could advise on? Thanks for any assistance.
