Former Crazy Eddie CFO, convicted felon: "Audits are a myth... Real audits are too cost prohibitive... My firm had a presentation on “work life integration” for international women’s day.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:06 PM PST

Thanks. Thank you for the empowering seminar about how I would be much more happier with my life if I just let work seep into every part of my life, as if the 60+ hours a week I am giving to you isn't good enough. All I have to do is be on call 24/7 and never unplug, except for when I'm allowed to eat 3/7 dinners with my family and have a ten minute group chat. But immediately after i need to check my emails. Thank you. I feel really empowered as a woman by this seminar.

Its really the fact that im not plugged into work 24/7 thats causing me a great deal of stress and not the fact that we have unreasonable deadlines and are short staffed and have no support. I just need to work more. Got it.

WFH brings out the worst in coworkers

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:56 AM PST

My 'manager' asked how I'm doing with my work after unloading a new set of responsibilities with an approaching due date. I responded yes, I could use some help since I'm also being pulled to assist with out very in depth audit, and she responded by tagging the partner and asking why I needed help and why was I not prioritizing correctly.

Wtf was even the point of asking if I needed help??? I legit almost had a 'when keeping it real goes wrong' moment as these motherfuckers do not know about me.

I'm trying the imagine this going down the same way in person, and I just doubt it.

Managed to not respond to the email but I'm still stewing an hour later.

How do you managers and up not pee constantly?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:33 PM PST

I have to go tinkle alot. I drink water and coffee, both of which have a diuretic effect.

You managers always have your schedules full of meetings, and I never see y'all leave the meetings to go pee pee.

How do you develop bladders of steel to where you can drink water and coffee yet somehow mysteriously not have to pee? Is there a CPE course for it or something? Are adult diapers issued when you get to that level?

[New staff here] Am I really supposed to believe that come May 1, "busy season" will be over & I'll be working 40 hours a week for the rest of year?

@big four accountants how often (if at all) do y'all have diversity and inclusion meetings and do you think they're useful?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:24 PM PST

I have these meetings like twice a month where we discuss race relations and unconscious bias at work and it feels so weird and forced. It's constantly presented as having a "discussion" when in reality it just comes off as corporate pandering where the same talking points get regurgitated over and over again. Have you big four people been having these meetings at the same frequency? Do you like them? Dislike them?

    Micromanaging

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:20 PM PST

Have you ever had a superior/boss that is a micromanager? How do you deal/communicate with them?

Currently dealing with one that's monitoring work more than reviewing and questioning why things aren't immediately done.

It's one thing to be a micromanager, but it's another to be a micromanager that doesn't communicate effectively about anything, especially expectations.

Did You Retain What You Learned in School?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:32 PM PST

I know this is kind of a weird question, but I am now on to Int3 and I don't feel like a retain much from test to test. I start an auditing internship soon. I guess what I want is how important is it to try and remember what you learn in school vs. on the job training for public accounting?

Everything at my firm seems like a recruiting pitch and fake

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:22 PM PST

Is it me or is every big public accounting firm full of shit? I recently started an internship at a pretty well know firm, and the whole first month of the internship was training, getting to meet people, having people come in to tell us about their experience here and why they love the firm so much etc. The actual work recently started and every week will have a team meeting about some other nonsense on why we should work here but my boss will say "don't worry I'm not trying to persuade you guys to work here I just want you guys to listen to other people's experience". There's also tons of webinars on why they care about you as a worker, how the firm provides great work life balance, etc. I'm working at another firm over the summer and it's the exact same thing with all the webinars for their interns. It is what it is but I can read right through it and I know when I actually start they probably won't give a shit about there workers

I really had no idea what being an auditor was like

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:19 AM PST

At my old company which was a massive F100 the auditors had their own cubes and their jobs seemed chill. They were there most of the year.

I just walked by the auditors at my new job which is for a smaller private company and they're all huddled in a conference room working... directly next to each other??? Is that normal? I've always been in industry so I've had a ton of space and now have an office, so the idea of working sitting directly next to someone really stresses me out.

Anyway, when I walk by them I'm just imagining these kids hating their lives because all you guys do in here is talk about how horrible it is. Makes for a more depressing image. I hope it helps that I'm at least somewhat competent and give you guys the stuff you need when you ask for it.

    Cheers, auditors!

These corporates take it too far. Whats next?

    Officially burnt out

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:03 PM PST

Welp. Just a little under 2 years in public of working nearly 12 hour days every day for the last year and almost all weekends and I'm so mentally exhausted I can't even complete my assigned work any more. Now I'm afraid they're gonna let me go even though the firm is understaffed. I've reached out to seniors, managers, and partners and I've not received any real help. I'm being micromanaged now. Every day I feel like I get closer and closer to a major mental breakdown. I'm seeking medical help at this point, but I'm afraid the workload has worn me down to the point of no return. I wish I could take PTO, but I know it'll be denied just like it was denied right before busy season. I'm just defeated and exhausted.

Should I start applying to senior accountant positions with only 2 years experience as a staff accountant? (industry)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PST

Ladies and gents, how do we do? I'm a staff accountant at a mid sized firm (75M in revenue) and I've just finished my second year a staff. I feel like I've mastered everything I've had to do so far. Also, my new controller is being a bitch. He keeps assigning me AP, billing and AR work saying we need to cross train everyone on how to do everything. Month end close duties got switched over to the ap clerk who doesn't even have a bachelor's degree... Also, I'm just honestly tired of making $35k a year and we had a firm wide 10% paycut at the beginning of covid so technically my salary is $31.5k a year now.
