Leaving Audit Big 4, cya guys

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Not a rant post of anything, but I have to use a throwaway. I just wanna say that I gave my notice in today at Big 4. Being a first-year, not a soul will give a damn about me leaving, so at least I'm happy for that. I can't deal with unreasonable, snappy, and shitty people in management. Coming into the job I was expecting long hours and unreasonable expectations, since I did an internship during last busy season, but I can't stand people bitching about the most random shit (looking at you seniors who color code and keep everything at 80% zoom, and expect us to do the same). I've also had problems with my depression, and didn't really feel like going back to trying to commit suicide like I almost did in my junior year of college (that's another story for another time).

Just wanna thank the subreddit for helping me out with some homework problems I had a couple of years back and giving general advice about accounting. I graduated with a degree in economics, but thankfully listened to my stats I and II professor and learned to code. After endless amounts of tutorials, projects and such, I've managed to convince an employer to offer me a junior dev position. I'm pivoting my career out of accounting and into programming.

Thanks guys, and I hope that many of you are well by the end of busy season. Mental health ain't worth destroying over some auditing BS.

    Peace out.

Getting an average performance review, after working 80 hours a week for $55,000

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 09:35 AM PST

The Big4 is toxic af and we need to do something about it.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 05:03 PM PST

Honestly though. The number of posts, during busy season especially, of people's lives getting ruined over shitty low paying sweatshop jobs is alarming.

    F you Big4.

Anyone else feel like this.....no? Just me?

    Big 4 performance reviews suck

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:04 AM PST

I got feedback saying "XYZ does great work but sometimes makes mistakes since xyz rushes to meet deadlines"

Last time I got "XYZ does great work, but does not always complete them in timely enough manner"

I mean both times I got good metrics, but what's the point of review like this? Is this supposed to be constructive in any way?

Shout out to the all the dedicated seniors in public accounting

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 08:26 AM PST

Since I started in PA I've always worked with some pretty hardcore seniors. I always thought I got the short end of the stick compared to my peers because my seniors, while extremely smart and hard working, set very high expectations for me as a staff.

I have learned that hard way that the chill and relaxed senior is far worse than the hardcore ones. I just spent the last month, to a large extent, doing my seniors job for him. I don't think I had a single question he was able to answer, they all had to go the SM. He made many many mistakes and I had to spend several hours cleaning them up. Tbh this is kind of a vent post, but it has definitely made me appreciate the great seniors that make life easy for their staff

You know that B4 type feeling where you were bad at your job on the first day and you're just as bad now wondering wtf is the point of any of this

My mental health trying to deal with this busy season

Big 4 confirmation bias in this sub.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PST

If someone has a good experience wrt the aspects of b4 people dispute they are less likely to post about it because it will be drowned out by the vocal opinion on the sub. Not every office has a toxic energy. Nor does every year 1 work 80 hours a week. I think if we are honest with ourselves lots of time is spent fucking around.

I'm just saying these things largely probably vary by office and you should try to get in contact/befriend people at different offices. I think that's much more important than forming opinions from this sub if you're a recent grad

Is it worth it to stay until senior in the face of declining mental health?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 10:04 AM PST

A2 here going through my second busy season in Big 4 Audit. My depression and anxiety have progressively worsened since starting this job and I know this is not sustainable long term.

I've gotten great performance reviews and have good technical knowledge but just don't function well in such a high pressure environment. I think industry would be more my speed so I would love to jump to a senior accountant or financial analyst role before next busy season.

However, I work at a certain firm that does not promote to senior until 3 years in. I've heard that exit ops are significantly better after getting the senior title.

Would I still qualify for those senior accountant/FA roles if I were to leave after 1.5-2 years of experience? Or is it worth sticking it out for one more year to senior?

Accountants, How do you see yourself on the political spectrum? (Please remain civil)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:56 PM PST

I'd love to keep this civil, but I know there's a lot of conservatives in my college, and I'm curious about the political beliefs of those in the profession. I'd also love to hear what your perspective is based on. (Are you a tax accountant for example?)

It makes sense, given there's a huge capitalist's slant in accounting toward the best interests of businesses. That said, if you are more liberally minded, how do you balance your position as a cog in the machine of capitalism with your desire to truly make a difference in the lives of the disenfranchised?

Again, please keep this civil, I'd love to have a dialogue about this without it turning nasty.
