Planning a baby to use Paternity Leave to get out of next Busy Season?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 04:06 PM PST

Any advice? If I could get out of next year's busy season using paternity leave, what would be the pros and cons?

The turnaround time to execute is like, next month, for an event nine months from now.

    Just the worst

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:00 PM PST

I like to think I'm a strong CPA. But every time I review a NY return and try to figure out how to apply my carryforwards and estimated payments I remember I don't know nothing about nothing. Does it go to the Income tax return, the MTA surcharge, the MFI? I don't give a shit, here's your money, you sort it out.

My anxiety makes drafting emails take 20-30 minutes

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 10:13 PM PST

Questions for the managers, pending item lists, asking about the status of returns - they all take me much longer than they should. It's a cycle of read my email to make sure it makes sense/no embarrassing errors, etc., get anxious about sending the email, re-read my email and add a few details or something, then still get anxious despite fixing things, and so on.

I'm in public as well, so I have to meet min charge hours, but I also have anxiety about putting extra time on projects. Especially since I'm new and prep already usually takes me longer than whatever we put down for the budget.

This is meant more as a rant, but if anyone has advice I'm all ears.

    Too accessible

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 07:16 AM PST

Why do people still say they are accessible when taking sick. personal, or vacation days? That defeats the purpose of the day if you're still working. If I am off I am not responding to anything.

Hey, I'm fortunate enough to have received internship opportunities from all the Big 4 and Grant Thornton. I've done my own research but I thought I would useful to hear from people in the field. Thanks :)

What are your top 5 red flags when moving to industry?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 10:30 AM PST

For the public accountants, what are your red flags when researching companies for your exit opps? For US jobs, are there industries you avoid? And industries you prefer? How about start ups? How do you manage the risk?

I assume you see more financials and have a better out look in the overall health of the company compared to my experience of sticking to industry all my career. I have also been testing the waters in seeing what jobs are available.

My red flags are: High turnover Extremely lean staff Controller with zero experience in public accounting Start ups

    US Payroll Accounting Homework Help

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 10:30 PM PST

I think I need someone to break this down for me but I'll share my interpretation first.

When filling out a W2, if an employee is eligible for $55k of group-term life insurance and their total earnings is $23k, does the full $55k get added to their earnings in box 1? If someone is eligible for less than $50k, none of that is added to their earnings?
