My Mom's a Small Business Owner. And this doesn't seem legit.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:35 PM PST

My Mom owns a small business in a shopping center. Like everyone else, 2020 has been a tough year for her.

But here's the kicker. She just received a letter from the landlord. She suddenly owes an extra 3K. There's a clause in her commercial lease that states she owes that amount because so many businesses have failed. She fully understands they are within their right to do so. But she just doesn't have it.

It just seems counterproductive to me that they should ask for this right now. What's the landlord trying to do? Get even more businesses to fold and have even more vacant property?

Is there any work around you can think of? Tax relief, government loan, payment plan, whatever. I'm really afraid it could be a financial tipping point for her.

Are IG “influencers” worth it? How to deny the ask?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:16 AM PST

Since pre-launching until now, there have been tons of self claimed influencers who DMed me asking for collaborations.

Using influencer is a nice marketing tactic but honestly these self claimed ones are just ruining the idea. I can't believe people who have about 2000 followers or lower have the nerves to ask for "free" items to "promote" on their platforms.

My products are not even expensive, they are less than CAD$20/each. At this point, I really don't know how to decline their "offer" nicely anymore. How should I reply to their DM and say something similar to "F*k you, pay it yourself?"

*Edit 1: I don't underestimate people with less followers. I'm willing to reach out to them if they match my target market. This post is about "self claimed" ones that are extremely annoying.

Do white people eat mung bean sprouts?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 03:38 AM PST

I'm Asian and living in Toronto, Canada. My local farmers' market is inviting home gardeners to sell and I was thinking of joining.

Mung bean sprouts grow so fast so I was thinking of selling those. But most of the customers there are white. This might sound insensitive but do they know/eat them? If so, what dish? And maybe leave a recipe. Thanks.

If my business (single-member LLC) can't make payments on its loans, will creditors come after me as a person under normal circumstances?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:25 PM PST

This is hypothetical. Say I have a small business, a single-member LLC. The business is not making enough to make its loan payments. If this business is operated out of my house and the only tangible assets associated with it are my house's internet connection, a few square feet of space in my room for a cubicle, and a single laptop that I use specifically for this business...

Would creditors be able to come after me personally, i.e. my house and retirement savings and everything? Would this damage my personal credit score and/or hurt my ability to start a different business in the future?

Can I sell my list of clients from my 6 year old Dog Grooming business - UK?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 02:17 AM PST

    Hi all

My partner and I have built a succesful dog grooming business thats local to our home town. We have 2 staff members and turn over about £75k per year.

We are currently based in our salon but due to the pandemic its no longer viable for us to run the business. We are feeling burnt out by it/it's fizzled out naturally for us and we no longer want the pressure of overheads/rent payments and worrying about staff. We also suspect at the end of our lease next year the landlords will not renew it - they've turned some of the neighboring shops into flats and we think they are looking to do the same for the premises we are in too.

We have built a client list of over 500 clients, enough to cover 10+ grooms a day 5 days a week consistently. Facebook following of about 3000 with 250 5* reviews and Instagram about 2000 followers. We also have a website made by a professional web designer about 5 months ago, we own copyright to our logo and also own the majority of domain names pertaining to our company name.

Is it possible for us to sell any part of this before we shut up shop? Our staff have been informed of our decision but it has not been made public yet.

Thanks for the help guys, both feeling a little lost with what to do with the remnants of the business once it's officially closed!

Would it be illegal to send decals of a company logo to the company?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:35 PM PST

I own a print shop and I thought it would be a good idea to send to some medium sized businesses a post card but also a decal of there logo to show what we can do. Im just worried about the legality of it .

Buying heat press printer for t-shirt business makes the most sense, right?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:01 AM PST

Could you please help me run through my logic here?

I had the idea of starting an e-commerce t-shirt business (I know, I know).

POD is charing me $19 and buying in bulk with custom design is around $16+. These are the cheapest shirt that I plan on selling for $15.

Alternatively, if I buy blank shirt, which is $5 each, and a heat press printer for $400. I break even at around 36 shirts and beyond that, I get to keep the $11 difference as profit.

Why wouldn't I invest in a printer and do everything myself?

I know nothing about t-shirt printing or running a business, which is why I'm hoping you can help me see where my blind spot is.

    Attracting realtors

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:22 PM PST

I have a business (wildlife consulting and property management) and my target clients are landowners (10 acre - +1000acre). I believe I would benefit greatly in landing new clients if I could get some realtors to push my services, or at the very least give a business card to new landowners. I was wondering if y'all would have any ideas on how to get them to play ball.

Hit a wall this week early in business development.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:34 PM PST

Hey all. I'm really struggling. As a brief background, I'm a fairly young aerospace machinist with an associates degree in Business. I am confident that running and growing my own shop is what I want in life, and have been taking steps to make it happen over the last year. I've been steadily making progress, I have an LLC, bank account, a good amount of cash going in, multiple potential customers, and I've picked out the equipment I want to finance.

This whole time, I've been working at my day job, an aerospace company, who have been extremely supportive in letting me follow this dream, and we have been working constant overtime. I've been working 6-7 day weeks for a couple months now, on top of attempting to cook more than eat out, and actually sleep some at night. I haven't put more than a couple hours into the business in the last three weeks, because I feel burned out whenever I get home from work.

I want this business. Badly. But lately I'm just too exhausted to really put in the work, and it's frustrating me because the business itself isn't the source of any of the burnout, it just suffers because of it. Have you experienced something like this? What was it like for you?

What legal policies would I have to disclose and include in my contract if I were to offer web design and digital marketing services?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:46 PM PST

    Hi guys,
I am in the process of launching my digital marketing business/ consulting business. I intend to conduct most of my business within Australia and then gradually expand in an international market. The services I intend to offer my future clients are mainly digital marketing, web design and branding, etc. I have gone as far as registering for a sole trader ABN (Australian Business License).
Would appreciate any tips and information on the legal aspects of running this sort of business.
I have also booked an appointment in with a Business Lawyer but I just want some tips on what to ask them as lawyers are extremely expensive.

    Thanks heaps!

Tips for a startup clothing brand placing products into local stores?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:43 PM PST

My name is Dakota, and I started an international travel inspired clothing brand that focuses on global impact philanthropy by donating 10% of all proceeds to educating children in developing countries.

I started about 3 years ago in Pennsylvania, and have recently moved to Huntington Beach, California. So far, I have focused solely on e-commerce sales with my website, and my Instagram/Facebook page. This post I will only focus on my questions pertaining to getting my product into stores. I have a feeling that I may need a little bit more of an online presence along with a longer history of proven sales. I currently restarted this LLC in September, and have sold around 200 products for an estimated $10,000 of revenue (just to give an idea of the scale).

I have a couple of really popular products that my current customer base have purchased, and are extremely satisfied with.

    Products include:

    -Hoodies

    -T-shirts (long/short)

    -Hats

The questions that I have before I create a sales program to get my inventory in local niche stores are:

Should I expect to have very low margins for my products when first starting to pitch a line of my products to a new store?

Should I wait to have a larger online presence/track record, before presenting my company to a store?

I realize I do not have a lot of specific questions, but does anyone have any personal experience and/or tips regarding this topic that could possibly help me?

I need EIDL Loan help for group home (specifically cost of goods sold)

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:38 PM PST

My business is in a gray area (real estate rental/services). It's a business where I collect a fixed rent but part of that money goes towards the people in the group home. I can write off a lot of expenses such as utilities, cable and internet etc., Furniture, home repairs, food etc.

So that being said... What is the Cost of Goods for this type of business?

I been using Schedule E + 1040 + Depreciation and Amortization forms when filing taxes.

    Edit: update

I found this on bench.co where it says I can do cost of service

How to calculate Cost of Service (COS) If you're a services provider, you instead need to calculate your Cost of Service, which is simpler than COGS.

Cost of Service is just all the costs you incur during the process of providing your service. So if you're a lawyer and you need to pay $8 to print a few hundred pages of a contract on behalf of a client, that $8 is part of your COS.

What do you think of this? The website seems legit

How do I respond in an email to turn away difficult customers?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:59 AM PST

Sometimes I get customers that are just a pain to deal with constantly asking for updates, demanding, rude, etc. and usually these customers are the most frugal (always asking for discounts).

As a small business, I just don't have the resources to deal with customers like this because they're just not worth my time. They barely provide any revenue coming in and I rather focus on my customers that bring in the most revenue and I rarely hear a peep from them.

How do I respond in an email to turn away difficult customers and maybe even recommend they use one of my competitors who can handle all their inquires.

    Ty.

[Question] Small Biz partnership: how does investing/working play out?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:20 PM PST

My friend and I want to partner up in house flipping. We both have a bit of previous experience. He has more skills with the maintenance/fixing up things side, and I have a bit more experience with the prospecting/scouting/selling side. We think our joint skills can work for our advantage.

I have the money to buy our first house. He does not. I would be covering the fixing up costs as well. How would this work with profits, equity?
we plan putting in the same amount of time, effort.
When we sell the house for profit, how should it be divided?
If we re-invest and do this for a few times, and lets say after 5 years we want to part ways, how should we split the capital?
