MIL filed Husband's life insurance beneficiary claim without his consent and won't tell us who the policy is through or any other info. Help!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:52 AM PST

TL;DR MIL already filed a claim to receive husbands life insurance benefits left by his grandmother without his consent or knowledge and still won't provide any info regarding what company it is through, copies of the paperwork, etc. We don't know what to do without the basic information.

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Created a new acct as some family/friends know my main. I apologize if this isn't the appropriate place to post this, but I'm in over my head. We are located in GA, USA.

Husband's mother informed him he's the beneficiary of a life insurance policy from his dying grandmother days before she passed. She claimed it was only to cover incidentals, legal fees, etc. associated w/ being executor (he previously asked to be removed as executor of grandma's will long before she passed, so he's not the executor). From our research, this isn't typical of life insurance policies as they don't usually pass thru the estate. But is there any way it would be true his payout would be required to cover things usually covered in the estate by the current executor?

Grandma passed a few wks ago and since the funeral his mother has made up excuses and won't tell us who the policy is through or anymore information necessary to find it. All good and well since they should find my husband, except she informed him this weekend she went ahead and filed his claim for him. He again asked which company it was through and for a copy of paperwork, which she still hasn't given after promising we'd have it by Monday (yesterday). She has a long history of horrible financial decisions, even going as far to steal my husband's identity to run up a credit card when he was deployed overseas years ago.

    So my questions are:

Would she have had to forge his signature on the beneficiary claim she filed for him?

Is her filing the claim for him without his consent/knowledge insurance fraud? (Possibly also identity theft?)

We don't know if she even knows our physical address, so no clue where the check is supposed to go, and the research we've done indicates he would have had the opportunity to decide how he wanted to receive the benefits (i.e., lump sum, installments, etc.), so she must have decided for him.

Is there anything we can we do now if we still don't know who the policy is through and she's already filed a claim in his name?

Thank you so much if you've taken the time to read all of this! Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Edited for clarity/brevity. If it's relevant, husband is 34M and fully able to file his own claim forms.

Car was declared totaled today after accident last week. Insurance says I only get one week with rental car since I was given write off amount today. Can I negotiate longer time?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:06 PM PST

Hello, Phoenix, AZ. Info: I have not accepted their initial write off offer yet.

Earlier today my insurance company declared my car totaled. They said I have 1 week from today left with my rental car before coverage will end. I have up to $1000 in rental car coverage and have only used approximately $150 of it through today.

I was not the driver at fault and my insurance company has determined another driver is 100% liable. I feel like they said I only have a week left because they want me to accept the write off amount asap but i don't want to be rushed. Can I negotiate a longer time with rental car?

    Absolute cheapest insurance?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:40 PM PST

    Midwest US, "old" home.

I'm trying to find the absolute absolute cheapest homeowners insurance and am not having much luck. There only seems to be five or six options and it's like they are all colluding and matching each other's price. Is there a cut throat option for homeowners like there are for car insurance? Long story short, county assessors have re-evaluated property in the neighborhood every year for five years raising the assessment over 300% in that time. Insurance companies have matched that in replacement value and now the escrow has skyrocketed.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Fertility offering- CA

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:37 PM PST

Hiiii, my husband's work is changing our insurance from Blue Shield of California and giving us the choice between Cigna OAP 0 or Kaiser HMO 0. We live in California and we are trying to get pregnant but need some fertility support. Can anyone tell us if either offers fertility support? Or any guidance/opinions around which one has better support for fertility/pregnancy? Thank you so much in advance!

International student has question about paying bill

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:50 PM PST

I need help. Please note that I don't understand much about American health care and insurance in general. Short info: International student. Graduated in December. had insurance with a company and it ended at the end of December. Went to a dermatologist a week before insurance ended. Had a biopsy and got prescribed some prescription. Already paid about $100 for the prescription. Not sure if insurance cover or not but I threw the receipt away so let's not worry abt this part. A few days ago, I got $200 biopsy lab bill & over $400 doctor visit bill. I am so surprised by this, I thought that since I visited the dermatologist & had the biopsy before my insurance ended, the insurance will get the bill and asks me to cover whichever left. No?

What should I do? Since I no longer on the insurance plan, can I call them and press about this bill? What is my option? Can I call and negotiate the bill with the dermatologist? Is the 30 mins visit really cost $400? America, this is your fucking problem!! $400 for a fucking visit.

More details if anyone needs: I graduated in December and still looking for a job, I have a tough time already paying rent and expense without income. i am not American so I cannot file unemployment either. I have some savings only for emergency (rent, transportation logistic to travel to job interviews, $ to get a cheap car, $ for flight ticket home once my visa runs out). let's just say paying $600 will basically takes out 1/3 of that emergency savings. With the doom of job market right now and the nature of international student's job seeking, I don't know when will i get a job, i also cannot work odds job to cover these bills (again, international student's restriction). I'm in Nebraska

I'm not sure if I can reveal the name of the insurance in this sub? It's one of the cheapest plan there is for international student.

Complicated situation with health insurance and car insurance. Stuck in a rut.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:34 PM PST

Hi all, I've been in a very complicated situation and am not sure who to talk to about this as I don't want to get in trouble.

I'm currently 19, parents are divorced and I moved with my father to another state when I turned 18 (changed my license to the new state and everything.) It didn't go too well and I was miserable, so I came back to my home state.

Went to college for a semester, then became an electrical apprentice. I was originally living in dorms then moved in with my mother as it was my only option. She is mentally disabled and lives on disability, I'm not legally allowed to be living with her, but have been for the past 5 months. I quit my job two months ago as my boss became verbally and physically abusive.

I've been working off the books once a week (all I could get) at my aunts restaurant and selling my clothes and items on Mercari for extra income. I also go out before garbage gets picked up to find furniture or any items I could sell on the Facebook market. I'm doing what I can to save money to get me out of this situation.

I have not changed my license or plates since coming back here. I was told that college exempted me from having to change my info, but I have not been in school since august and am starting to worry it may cause a problem.

I would love to change my plates back to my home state (New York), but my father agreed to paying my car insurance for one more year as I don't have a job and can't afford it right now. He said if I switch it over, he won't pay it anymore since it'll be so much more expensive.

My father stopped paying for my health insurance once I turned 18 so I've signed up for NY Medicaid using my old license from when I lived here since all my doctors are here.

If I make more than $16K a year, I won't qualify for it.

I have 3 big surgeries coming up within the next 2 years and I need Medicaid to cover it before I could get off since I don't have money to get a new plan or pay for deductibles.

I'm scared to get a job as I don't want to not qualify for Medicaid anymore so I've been investing in the stock market and have made $1,500 in 2 months so far. It's not a crazy amount, but I didn't realize that this could also make me not eligible for Medicaid anymore. I keep digging myself deeper and deeper

I'm in a rut and have been becoming more and more anxious every day with this whole situation because I don't want to get in trouble and don't know what could happen. I get anxious when driving past cops since there are a lot in the town I live in and I don't want them to remember me having an out of state license and being here for so long.

I've been thinking of just taking a trip to the state where my plates are so if I ever were confronted, I'd say my parents are divorced and I go back and forth. But I really can't fathom to see my father again.

Another problem is that my father has moved and the address on my license no longer matches where he lives so if I ever get mail there from the DMV, I won't be seeing it and could get in trouble if someone investigated. My father said to not change anything or worry about it, but I have been worrying anyway.

I really need help and don't know where to start. If I weren't having surgery then it'd be much easier, but I need this insurance. Any advice would be much appreciated

Individual OOP maximum vs Family OOP maximum

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:19 PM PST

This seems like a simple question and I hope it is.

I'm on a HDHP plan with a $7000 deductible as well as a $7000 out of pocket maximum for individual. The plan also has a $14000 out of pocket maximum for family. I'm the only person on the plan.

I was told today I count both as an individual and as a family? So I hit my individual out of pocket maximum and now I need to fill up the family out of pocket maximum?

I moved from Michigan to Maryland. Can anyone answer these few questions that I have regarding my car insurance?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:34 PM PST

I will try and give as much information as possible, maybe someone here who works as an insurance agent can give me quotes if possible.

I obtained a driver's license in 2018. Drove sparingly since then until I bought a car in August 2020 after which I started driving more frequently. Have had insurance with Progressive for 6 months running and paying $123 per month. The details of the policy can be seen here: https://imgur.com/IffjUyc

I moved to Maryland from Michigan and my insurance policy will run out in about a month:

    • Do I need to register my car in Maryland before I can be able to buy new insurance? Am I even legally allowed to continue driving my car without Maryland registration?
    • Giving my driving history (the length of time I have owned the car while being insured and a clean driving record with no accident nor traffic violations), will my rates reduce significantly or remain unchanged?
    • Should I continue with Progressive or is there something cheaper out there that matches my current coverage as seen in the screenshot attached to this post?

Your responses will be highly appreciated.

    PS: It's a Honda Civic 2010

Sinkhole under my 100+ year old townhouse?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:10 PM PST

So I am the proud owner have a 100+ year old townhouse in the illustrious city of Baltimore. I think may have developed a cavity under a portion of my basement slab. There have also been other things I have noticed like gaps in my trim getting gradually larger in random spots and a continual amount of dust falling from my ceiling in my basement. Also, could it be possible the two new homes they built next door to me are making my hose sink? Am I on the precipice of falling directly into hell?

Or more importantly, do you think my insurance will cover it?

Covid Auto Insurance Lowest Possible Premium. Only use insurance on days you need it

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 06:12 PM PST

So with covid I've been driving less and less and it just doesn't make sense to pay such high premiums for insurance that doesn't even come into play. Unless I have a house fire, which I'm not even sure auto insurance would apply, my insurance is underutilized. Is it possible to switch coverage back and forth from plpd + comprehensive back to full coverage over and over based on when I use the vehicle? I have progressive and I'm not sure when they allow policy changes. I would which to use the insurance only on days that I use it. Has anyone ever done that where they lower the coverage on days their car isn't being used?

Insurance sent my boyfriend a check, but the dentist says it's their money? US, FL

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:35 PM PST

I was recommended to come here for this question:

Months ago, he went to the dentist. He had insurance and due to the work that was done, he used it up pretty quickly, but was still making very high payments at the dentist. He recieved 2 checks from his insurance company and we assumed they were reimbursing what he had over paid out of pocket once the insurance went through to cover the appointments. Soon after, he got a call from the dentist stating that the money was theirs and not his, saying he owed them that money. It sounded fishy but he paid up anyways without calling the insurance company to verify.

Looking back on it, was this possible? I've told him from the beginning this practice is super shady and I wouldn't put it pass them to try something like that. Does this sound normal? An honest mistake on the insurance part?

Neighbor set his apartment on fire resulting in a flood in my apartment

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 11:35 AM PST

    I live in NYC.

The landlord called in the demolition team to destroy every surface of my apartment that had water in it (basically every room) so that mold doesn't build up. Now i'm forced to live in a hotel until the building and the insurance company come to an agreement on how much they should pay for the damages.

It's been over a week and I still haven't received an answer and my landlord isn't answering the phone. The last time I spoke to him he said I need to be patient because "calling the insurance department would only delay the process, not speed it up." Is this the normal procedure?

Slightly crashed a car in parking lot

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:16 PM PST

Hi, I was backing out of a shopping mall parking lot today and my car's front slightly crashed with one back side of the car parking next to mine. I could hear the crashing sound but more like a touch. I got out to check and saw some light scratches and some paint damages on that back side of the car. However, that car looked very old and in bad shape. It has scratches and paint damages in different areas, including that back side. I couldn't tell which scratches/paint damages were caused by my crash. From the sound I heard, I don't think my car could cause that much damage. I waited for about an hour and needed to leave for some works. I did took pictures of the car including the plate number. I will try to contact the owner or report the incident. However, considering that car is old and has a lot of "injuries" on its body, I am worrying that I would be blamed for more than what I did to it. What should I do in this case? Thanks very much!!

    Question about totaled car valuation

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:57 AM PST

[WISCONSIN] I was recently rear ended on the highway, the other driver was entirely at fault. Her insurance company is progressive. My car was deemed a total loss and we have been fighting them about the valuation. Out of the 4 comps they came up with, only 1 is actually for sale right now. We asked about disputing it and providing our own comps, and they said that the comps have to be within a 75 mile radius, other wise it will be rejected by their "JD Power automatic system". The problem is the car I have is really difficult to find, and there is literally only 1 for sale within 150 miles. How can they set such a small radius for comparable vehicles if I have to go halfway across the country to actually have a chance at getting a real comparable vehicle to the one that was totaled?

My wife is worried about us getting kicked off of insurance due to 3 claims and making it hard for her/us to get insurance in the future and I could use some guidance.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 11:03 AM PST

So over the course of a year here are some events that occurred.

One: I was back into in a parking lot. The other people's insurance covered everything.

Two: tires were stolen out of garage.

Three: a persons paint can fell off of their truck and splatters all over my car. Still in the process of getting there insurance to cover it.

Is she correct in assuming that these minor claims will be reason to kick us off? Besides the stolen tires, none of this has impacted our insurance at all so I just wanted to get some insight.

    Thank you

(TX) Woman knocking on door about hit and run

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:06 PM PST

So I just got woken up from an amazing nap by someone knocking on my front door. They were looking for me specifically, and knew about the accident. They said they would be able to help locate the individual, and get all the money back and pay for any property damage and medical bills. They say they work for the insurance companies to try to get the money.

I explained to the individual that the cops, my insurance company, and I already know the license plate, vin, name, and address of the individual who committed the hit and run. Does anyone know how they got my information? And what this company actually does? Are they just "ambulance chasers"? I didn't want to explain to them they need to cut their losses because the individual isn't a US citizen or resident, and also because it seemed very rude to say as the individual talking to me only spoke Spanish which was a high indicator she might be or have been in that same legal status situation.
