Posted: 12 Feb 2021 09:23 AM PST I raised my concern that the lease states "Monthly Garage/Parking Rent: $0." They replied,
Upon asking where in the lease this statement is backed up they replied,
The lease amendment now lists my parking spot and associated $120/mo fee. I have not signed this. Backdating to 10/29/19 would involve backdating to a completely different lease (the first year living here, which, btw, also states $0.00 parking fee). There is email correspondence between myself and the property manager regarding the $120 for the tandem parking spot, but again, it's not listed on the original lease anywhere. This seems like a unilateral attempt to change the contract, and it seems misleading, at best, to say they can backdate this fee (especially to a different lease entirely). Should I sign the new lease amendment, or tell them to pound sand? Consult a lawyer? I had one lawyer quote $250 for consult and demand letter. Should I go that path? Many thanks for any help. Roommates sub letter has taken my room Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:48 AM PST Hello, My son lives in his college town and rents his apartment with two other people. Over winter break, one of his roommates sublet their specific room. The Subletter was shown the room he was subletting and was informed many times before and during his move which room he was supposed to move into. Since my son had not returned to school yet from break, the subletter decided to help them self to my sons room. My sons room did not have any of his belongings in it since it was break. My son has occupied this room since 2019. It is a large room with a private adjacent bathroom, so it is no wonder this new kid thought it was more desirable. We have asked him to move to the room that was specifically sublet it to him. He has refused. The rental company, even though they weren't obligated, were nice enough to call him and kindly ask him to go to the room that was specifically sublet to him. He hung up on them. My son has texted him again, stating that his expectation is that he move the things out of his room and into the room that was specifically available for him to sublet. No response. I feel like we really have no recourse here. Is there anything we can do it all? We probably just need to accept he isn't moving out of that room. Any suggestions would be helpful. PS. The sublease does not indicate a room assignment. Simply the financial obligation and the length of time for the sublet. This is why I feel like we really have no recourse [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:06 PM PST I was barred from calling the police after I was sexually assaulted at work. I was also told I had to sign an nda saying I could never call the police, testify in court or tell anyone else I was sexuallying assaulted or I would face a 6 figure penalty. I was told I would get a $4000 bonus. I wasn't given any time to decide. It had to be signed immediately. I wouldn't sign it so I was fired and escorted out by security. I did go to the police. My boss was arrested and charged with battery and sexual battery. Another manager and a security guard were both charged with obstruction of justice because they tried to delete the cctv. My boss, the other manager and the security guard weren't fired, they came back after getting bail. My question now is was it legal for them to fire me because I wouldn't sign the agreement or does at will employment cover them. [link] [comments] |
(CO) University doesn’t offer classes in program I am enrolled in. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 09:10 AM PST I am enrolled in an online graduate program and have three classes left to take before I can petition to graduate. The university cannot find professors to lead these classes so they haven't offered them for the last year and a half or so. I have been told by my counselor that I should take classes from another institution and transfer them in. These are very specific classes and are really pertinent to my degree. Does the University have any obligation to provide the classes they require? Any course of action I could pursue other than continuing to wait in hopes that they can get it together and offer the classes again? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:10 PM PST My dad was living with undiagnosed hep C for god knows how long and only discovered that it had caused cirrhosis after he had passed out in a grocery store parking lot and was taken to a hospital by ambulance. He was unable to keep up with his medications and developed chronic liver disease. I live 5 hours away from him and assumed he was taking care of himself, i talked to him about his doctors appointments and picking up his medications. When I visited him this past summer I found drawers full of his medications that he just wasn't taking. He was completely emaciated, confused, and displaying bizarre behavior. He refused to seek medical treatment. My siblings and I ended up having to get him court committed to a hospital. His ammonia levels were sky high causing the altered mental state and he had 3 Liters of abdominal fluid drained from his body. Once he was released from that initial hospital visit, his mental state was completely back to normal. He said he didn't even remember any of us being there through this week long endeavor and didn't know how he got to the hospital. He was placed into a nursing facility to maintain his care while he was taking the steps toward a transplant.. Last week the nursing facility had him admitted to the hospital where he again had fluid drained from his abdomen and was treated for his high ammonia levels. My brother received a call from someone from the hospital telling him my dad only had a couple weeks to live and he would be going on hospice, she would call him back with more information the following day. I called the hospital the next day and they had nothing in his files about hospice or this two week timeline. She told me his ammonia levels were almost back to normal and that he just needs to make sure to take his medications when he goes home. To which I replied that he lives in a nursing a home, they should be maintaining his prescriptions. She just said oh. So I asked is the cause of this because he wasn't taking his meds? Or is there anyway that the effects of these meds would lessen over time? Is the nursing home not giving him his medications? And she said well I can't answer that you'd Have to talk to The doctor, who was impossible to get ahold of...my sister in law finally talked to a doctor who was pretty upset about that hospice call. She said that information was not accurate and if it had been, hospice would have been something they talked about with my dad and only if he wanted to stop seeking medical treatment and go on hospice would they notify the family, and that just wasn't the case. She acknowledged that his case was serious and he had a short window of opportunity to go forward with various procedures, but his health was steady enough now to go forward with his next procedure. It just needed to be done timely. She was going to get in contact with specialists/surgeons and call her back by tomorrow morning. Well, tonight the hospital social worker called my sister in law and said he was discharged. We all assumed that meant he was on his way back to the facility. A while later my brother gets a call from the police department because my dad was found in a Walmart in a neighboring town shoplifting. My brother went to pick him up and explained the situation and the cops let him take him back to the nursing home. Turns out that the hospital ED had just called him a taxi, that apparently dropped him off at a Walmart. My brother drove him the hour to the nursing home where they refused to let him in because they said he had been too aggressive. My brother said that he was behaving very strangely and he then tried to take him to the local hospital because he does not have the means to care for him or any of the medication he requires. While there he was combative with doctors and was threatening them, police were called, and now he is in jail. I am at a loss for words. I don't understand how this happened and I don't know where to go from here. [link] [comments] |
My best friend is going through what feels and sounds like abuse and I’d like to know what to do. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:38 AM PST For context, my best friend, let's call him Dennis, that's his middle name, has been texting me the past month about issues with his mother. Dennis does virtual schooling and is VERY depressed. Here's a few examples. Firstly, during his therapy appointments, Dennis's mother will sit there next to him, and will interject on anything negative he says about his home life. She won't let him talk about his real problems. I think that these therapy appointments are mostly damaging to his mental health and she's only doing them so that she doesn't look like a terrible mother. Secondly, she constantly tells Dennis, as well as his younger sister and even younger brother, that she wishes they were never born. She threatens to put them up for adoption or leave them on the street. Thirdly, she blames Dennis and his sister for anything that goes wrong. Little brother doesn't wanna go to school? Well Dennis does virtual so that's his fault. She doesn't have enough money to spend on the kids? Instead of considering that she might want to buy less soda and alcohol, it's because the kids are too expensive. Dennis needs a couple bucks to spend on literally anything? She won't give it to him. He has to ask his stepdad. He normally gives Dennis the money he needs, but then his mom screams at the stepdad. Dennis was supposed to go on a date with his girlfriend tomorrow, for Valentine's Day. Now he's grounded because of something that his mother did wrong, that she is blaming him for. He can't go now. Dennis's computer wouldn't connect to any sort of wifi connection and his mother did nothing to help him. He was told "figure it out" when he asked for help. He's been trying to go to the school but can't. Whenever I try to say something they tell me to tell him to come in to get it fixed. Which isn't helpful. Now he has a fine for not signing in, and he can't get a job, because of the fine. His mother refuses to pay it off (it's about $200 that could be spent on Pepsi or beer). I'm getting a job so I can help him pay it off. Nobody else is going to do anything for him. I don't feel like working but I have to keep my friend out of juvie, and there's not any other way to do that. Dennis's bedroom consists of a bed covered in stains, an old pillow, a crappy blanket, and an Xbox and monitor setup, which I doubt his mother paid for. He's 6'5, and barely fits underneath the blanket. Dennis is genuinely beginning to worry me. I think that the issues with his mother are causing some problems in his mind and I really need to know if there's anything I can do to stop this behavior from his mother. I'm starting to fear that she's trying to make him hurt himself. She only does the bare minimum. It's fragrantly clear that she does everything she can to make sure she doesn't look like a shitty mother. She doesn't give a shit. She just doesn't want to go to jail. We're both 15 right now. He's 8 days older than me. I think he should try to be emancipated when he's older. For the record, we live in Pennsylvania, not in a major city. Northumberland County. For anyone who knows how I can help and what he can do, please let me know. [link] [comments] |

Bowing Walls from Neighbor's fireplace Posted: 12 Feb 2021 08:28 AM PST Context, I own and live inside a semi-detached home. In my living room I have now what appears to be a bubble in the lower middle part of the wall. Its right on a stud so the stud is bowing and we're talking an inch on each side level of difference from the normal wall. My attached neighbors do not own but rent and I haven't talk to them much where we're not friends but not enemies. I did notice though (through the window) that they've installed an electric fireplace exactly on the other side of the wall where the exact problem is. My conclusion is the heat from the fireplace that they must use a lot (cold winters) is causing the issue. I'd like to reach out to the landlord to talk about this but I feel strange asking the neighbor for their landlords number to complain about something they've done. What is the smart way to approach the situation? How can I even prove that the fireplace did that considering if I tell the renters they can just move the fireplace or get rid of it and pretend they don't know what I'm talking about. It's really unfortunate but its very noticeable on my side and can only lead to more and more damage if not immediately fixed. Location: Ontario, Canada [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:54 PM PST So I'm an eighteen year old female and this is extremely embarrassing for me. I want to make this short, so on Monday, while I was with some friends in the mall, one of them (18 M) decided to pull down my pants and lift my shirt up in quick secession. The only thing is that he also accidentally pulled down my underwear and I was r wearing a bra that day. He apologized profusely and even shielded me as I put my clothes back on. However, it was witnessed by an old lady and a few kids, so the security took me back after I was apparently reported. I got banned from the mall and the police came to give me a citation for public indecency. The female officer was extremely understanding, but she said that the charge would still apply to me until I pressed charges against my friend as it would be assumed my fault. I've forgiven my friend and i don't want to send him to jail. If I pressed charges, it would be sexual assault. I have no clue what to do. Is there any way that I could get the charges dropped without having to press charges? [link] [comments] |
A resident towed my car to an illegal parking location and I was towed and fined. Is this legal? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:47 AM PST Lawyers of Reddit, I'm in this perplexing situation with a resident about parking and towing and would appreciate some insight. Summary: I parked in a resident's parking spot in my apartment complex to unload things. I forgot to come back down to move my car. So, he personally towed my car with his car and left my car outside of the complex. He left it blocking the apartment entrance. I was then fined for the tow and for the parking violation. Full Story: I live in an apartment complex with assigned parking. There are spots on the outer area of the parking garage and parking in a matrix, which is in the center. The best way to describe the matrix is it is a car storage system that allows multiple cars to be stacked and rotated as they are inputted to be pulled out. My designated spot is in the matrix. However, I was advised by the technician at the beginning of my lease to park on the outer to unload stuff then move my car to my spot. (Click here to see what the matrix structure looks like or google it). So last night, I parked in the resident's spot to unload my car. I went up to load everything into my apartment and forgot to go back down to move it to my designated spot. My fault, I know. However, when I remembered about four hours later, my car was gone. After making some calls I found out that he had called the towing company and told them he was moving my car to the street and that they could deal with it. He hooked up my car to his and towed it to the entrance of the gate to block it. Then towing came and apparently the cops as well. I walked to grab my car and receive a towing ticket and a parking violation ticket. Examining the area where he towed from, there are skid marks, and reexamining my car this morning in the light there is a dent. I have picture evidence of the parking complex, the damage, where it was towed from, where he towed it too, and I also have confirmation of him telling the towing dispatch that he was personally going to move my car to the street. Now, I know I was in the wrong spot and I shouldn't be parked there. But my question is, is it legal for him to tow my car? Also, how should I proceed with this? And lastly, do I have a case? To me, it seems property management would be in charge of the towing and not the resident nor should the resident take matters into his own hands. I could be wrong and want to make sure I am clear with my next move. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Also, if any of this is confusing feel free to ask questions. Thank you. Edit - He does not work for a tow company nor is he contracted with the property as one. I checked with the office. [link] [comments] |
UPDATE: MI Religious Garb and Grooming Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:46 AM PST So probably no one cares but I emailed the right people and my boss was actually really cool with my veiling at work. He said he did research on Hellenic polytheism after my email and he kind of geeked out. So hooray! A happy ending! He even said if anyone gave me any trouble to come to him directly, which I know he probably said to cover his ass, but he seemed to mean it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:29 PM PST A few months ago, I accepted a job offer from Company A in Indiana. The job offer stated I'd be an exempt salaried employee for Company A. Everything checked out and the job has been going well, until now. I recently reviewed my W-2 from Company A, but the employer name on the W-2 is NOT Company A's, it's the PEO for Company A (Also an Indiana company if that matters). After reviewing my bank statements, I now realize that my payroll deposits are indeed from the PEO, not Company A's bank account. It was explained to me that the PEO handles Company A's health insurance, benefits, and payroll. However, I was never told that I would technically be an employee of the PEO. I've asked my manager about this, and she's asked others within the company, and I've still yet to receive a concrete answer. So my question is, is this legal? Should I be worried? Is this normal? I understand the benefits of using a PEO for some small businesses, but it seems awfully strange that I was never notified that I'd technically be an employee of the PEO. Does this mean for future employment purposes, I have to list Company A's PEO as my previous employer? [link] [comments] |

CA - Travel Agency Scam, owe $3k+, have to keep paying for a lifetime Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:02 PM PST In Oct 2019, my friend and I (both 18) signed up for the a travel network program thing. We put down a large down payment of like $2k and had to pay $87 every month. Basically she would give me half the money and I'd pay since it was my card on file. I got my purse stolen in Jan 2020 and canceled all my cards, so I completely forgot I signed up for it and haven't made any payments. My friend who signed with me has said nothing about it and doesn't respond when I call/text her and has since moved away. The agency just called me saying I owe over $3,000 and that it's a lifetime membership so I'd have to keep paying the $87 forever without a way for termination/cancellation. I'm just a student. I don't have $3000. They said they'd send me to collections and destroy my credit forever. I was young and dumb for signing this contract, but its done now. I don't have money to pay for help. Is it legal to bind two people to lifetime contracts with no way out? I only have like a $1000 saved up. They want the money soon but I don't have it, and is it possible that I'm only responsible for half the amount since it's cosigned? The state is California. Thank you for the help. edit: removed the travel agency name in case it could be used to identify but its a scam [link] [comments] |
[Oregon] Selling my house. All contingencies released, supposed to close today but it's not. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST My house in Oregon went under contract with a buyer in December. There were contingencies originally and I had to handle a few things following the inspection. Originally the close date was the end of January. The buyers requested 2 more weeks before close so they could prepare to move across the country, which I agreed to. Both I and the buyer have since signed paperwork stating that all contingencies are lifted and the buyer is ready to move to close. The new close date was supposed to happen today, but now my realtor is telling me it will be the end of this month, or maybe next week. Something about their financier not wanting to fund until they are out of a long-term lease, which is supposed to be happening. I am purchasing a house and this is now pushing my home purchase further out. Is this normal? I thought all contingencies being lifted was the final hurdle to closing. Do I just have to wait? How long can they string this out? What are my options here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:37 PM PST So, the subject kind of says it all. Most people I know pay their sitters in cash, and am wondering a couple of things. First, where can I find some online resources to identify payment thresholds where we would have incurred payroll tax responsibilities. I believe we paid her maybe $5000 June through December 2019, and to watch our kids during the summer and pick them after school through the rest of the year. Like, I said, I am trying to find some online resources to help me answer my questions, but it is a tax mess online. Second, what kinds of retroactive exposure risk are we facing. If anyone here has any knowledge or advice to share, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Samsung destroyed my fridge, reneged on agreements Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:03 AM PST I am in Washington State. I was having a problem with my $3000 samsung fridge icing over. Samsung refused to replace the fridge despite it being a known problem because I couldn't produce the receipt, as the fridge was a gift. Annoyed, I agreed to pay for the repairs, and asked them to dispatch a repair person. They sent out a local company, and the person punched a hole through a refrigerant line, and then left. No follow up plan, no word on when they'd be back. They wouldn't answer their phones, and it took five days to get ahold of them. The refrigerant gas (tetrafluoroethane) made us all nauseous as it off-gassed for days, while we tried to keep food cold with dry ice. I had to go buy a new fridge, and I had to throw out a lot of the food that spoiled. They left the fridge plugged in, so the compressor burned out. When I finally got ahold of them, they told me I had to deal with Samsung. When I first called Samsung, they offered me $1970 (depreciated value, they said), or a new fridge of a similar model. I chose the new fridge. I received emails from them stating the request to replace my fridge had been approved. Weeks later, no fridge or word, so I called them again. They said they "had no inventory" and so instead were offering me $761. They have refused to acknowledge they ever offered more, and have refused to acknowledge how ridiculous it is to claim they have no inventory, since Samsung fridges are very much still being distributed and sold. I have reached out to the office of the CEO, and all the executives I could find contact information for. I have worked with customer service for 3 months now. They've lied about what refrigerant their fridges use, told me I'm imagining we were all nauseous, lied about what was said on calls, avoided answering questions, tried to trick me into accepting the $761, etc. When I read the contents of /r/samsung, I can see a long history of really shady customer service practices, including lots of similar stories of Samsung reneging on commitments made, and later offering drastically lower amounts. In my case I have some disposable income, and other than the insults, frustration, and massive time waste, I would let this go. However, I have to assume they're also treating families struggling to make ends meet the same way. This is the most egregious customer abuse I've had to deal with. Yes, I'm angry at the financial cost, but at this point I want to turn down their $761, and make them realize that treating consumers this way is unacceptable. I have a written record of all my calls with them, and a recording of most of them (and yes, I notified them I was recording the call, also). I have all my emails exchanged with the office of the CEO. They have forced arbitration clauses in their user agreements, but those were ruled unenforceable recently. https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/consumer-products/441739-samsung-loses-9th-circuit-arbitration-bid-two-smartphone-class-actions/ Any guidance on where to get started with litigating this, and whether you would? Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:53 PM PST To add, the trash company's warning notice started that doors and "asbestos" were dumped in the recycling bin. I don't know why they thought there was asbestos but these were not my doors. Is this illegal? Is this considered illegal dumping? We live in a condo complex and this neighbor owns a unit in this complex too and that's how he was able to get in to dump the doors. The doors came from his other property. I apologize for this being poorly written TIA [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:19 AM PST I live in close proximity to a building that gets protested pretty much every day. Often the protestors bring bullhorns or microphones with amps. It can get very loud where I can hear them in every room in my house. I've called the non emergency line for the police and made noise complaints but it doesn't seem to do any good. The issue they have is with what is going on inside the building and talking people out of accessing its services. They are not likely to stop protesting unless the law is changed. To be clear, I am not disputing their right to peaceful protest. They have the right to come here and to speak their views. My issue is with the volume. I have a toddler and live in a small space. Not being able to use our little porch and backyard makes our world so small. Is there anything I can do or is moving my only option? Located in Louisiana. We live in a neighborhood close to medical buildings. There are a couple businesses on our street which are in houses. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:10 AM PST So that's the story. I can't do anything else in my country of origin. The investigator asked me to let it go but I lost a lot of money (6k usd). It's unfair because she didn't understand anything of all the proof and websites I referred to. They just sent some shitty emails expecting websites like Facebook to reply confirming the identity of the users, super unprofessional. They even mentioned contacting interpol with irony. I checked interpol's website and I can't contact them directly. I tried to get a lawyer but they don't reply or don't want to work with me because I don't live in the country anymore (also it's super expensive to do the legal stuff to give them power of attorney) What else can I do? This happened when I was living in Argentina and the criminal was from Morocco. Now I'm an European citizen, if that helps. Thanks a lot in advance for your interest and help [link] [comments] |

[FL] Father burned in food truck accident, should we engage a lawyer and what type? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:58 AM PST My father [60m] was in an accident in his brand new, unused food truck. Initial report from the fire department indicated a burner was left on, but new evidence found shows significant charring on a different source of ignition (FD coming out to reassess shortly). My father is alive, and expected to recover to some extent, but with burns on almost half of his body, his road will be hard and he may not be able to work as planned. I have a few questions:
