    Hi r/Accounting,

I'm Michael Kelley, CMA, CPA, global operations manager at Nike. I've worked as an accounting and finance professional for more than seven years. I started out in advisory services at Deloitte and moved to Nike two years ago. I also have both the CMA and CPA certifications, and am an active member of IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants); the CMA is IMA's flagship certification. A lot of my work is in data analysis, reporting and business analytics. At Nike, I'm responsible for data analysis, cost management, and overseeing a global supply chain. Ask Me Anything about my career, what it's like to be a CMA, or moving from Big Four to industry!

I'll start answering questions at 11:30 am EST.

Has this happened to you? Crazy how often I've seen this scenario play out with my auditors!

Big 4 brainwashing at universities is a very real thing

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:49 AM PST

i remember thinking back to when i was a naive undergrad, people made working at the Big 4 seem glamorous, almost like being a celebrity. the firms lavish these young promising students with limo's to interviews, happy hours. the internships involve a lot of fun like dodgeball, capture the flag.

i remember feeling panic as an undergrad if i didn't get into Big 4 - i genuinely felt like it would be the end of the world. i thought Big 4 was the be all and end all of life.

i legit will tell you a memory i had - i fantasized about being a Big 4 employee, going to a night club, and bragging to all the girls that i was in the Big 4 (not even joking). i thought it would make me some hotshot.

in reality, nobody outside of accounting gives a fukk about Big 4 - most people have never even heard of these firms. so you could argue that it's a cult - people within the organization are overzealous, but outside of the accounting world, it's nothing special.

some crazy people out there get off on working 24/7 doing mind-numbing audit work, but if you are a normal, sane person, it's bewildering that one would choose such a mediocre salary with such high hours and stress for an extended period of time.

Yesterday, I got the best news of my entire life. I took them all in 2015 and failed them all, tried again in 2019 and yesterday I found I passed the last one. It's been hard work but it feels good to be able to put this cursed exam behind me.

PSA: If you are in public accounting and transitioning to industry, don't assume that it will be laid back or that recruiters will understand what you mean when you want work-life balance

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:02 PM PST

Not every industry position is laid-back. Some places require a lot of hours and others are run by people with the workaholic mindset. Be careful in interviews if you say one of your primary motivations is work life balance. People can interpret that as you not willing to put in long hours during month end or whatever work culture they have. Some positions are either high profile or have different expectations. It isn't all come in and 9 and leave at 5. Even then, some jobs are but there are busy times where you may need to work 55-60 hours a week and they want to know if you are comfortable with that. Make sure you get a good feel as best as you can about this during interviews...some places really suck...

but also be careful when you mention work-life balance to non-accountants or HR professionals. Not everyone knows that when you say work life balance, what you as a public accounting professional mean is you don't want to work every weekend or late nights every night for months on end, or be on call on holidays. I know what you guys mean, but for some people that don't get it they think you never want to stay late for month end or never want to assist with a big project that might require you to work on a weekend. I keep on telling my boss that work-life balance to you means something far different - you most likely work much, much more than us. Yall work your asses off, and you want something less insane. I get it, many people don't. Good luck.

Just trying to help you public accounting folks. Seeing too many good candidates get tossed by morons that don't know anything about public accounting just because they mention they want work life balance.

When you’re trying to file but the partner adds 100 review comments

The soundtrack to leaving work at 5:30pm as your former co-workers audit your financials

I feel so dumb and frustrated...

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:40 PM PST

I work in tax I started at the end of September. I blew a budget on a return (like took 2.5x as long as the budget). Partner sent an email to my supervisor, the reviewer, and me about how we need to respect the budgets. The reviewer was difficult to get ahold of. It took me over a month to complete this return because I would send question to the reviewer and they wouldn't respond for a week or more. So I'd ask other people my questions, which added time to this client and more people put time to it.

I'm still learning. I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm trying my best to learn and get through the returns sent to me. But I just keep getting stuck. I either struggle with getting suck trying to figure something out on my own or I asking questions too often. There's no in between for me. I'm so extremely frustrated because when I first started I was always told that in my first year, no one should talk to me about budgets or tell me "eat my time". I haven't. So how am I suppose to fix this issue?? I can't get faster without taking the time to learn. I'm just so disappointed in myself. The last thing I want to do is upset the partner who also is the head of the tax department. I just don't know what to do. I feel like I should just find another job... I'm tired of crying nearly every day from work.

We're in busy season and several of us can't find billable work. What would you do?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:34 PM PST

Think my firm overhired this year. We are in busy season (tax) and a few of us are having trouble finding billable work. Its a smalk firm but we were way busier in prior years. Problem is they give us billable goals to hit and I cant keep up despite constantly asking for work but I'm not the only one. Feel like theyre definitely going to make cuts after busy season. The boss really likes me so I feel like I'm safe (but at this point I know its not guaranteed). I dont want to see anyone else to get canned though. I have serious worries about my coworkers, several that I am a mentor for. I feel like I should leave to protect them but I dont necessarily want to. Maybe I'm too attached and its negatively affecting me?

I'm just kind of ranting but I dont know what to think or if this is normal. Anyone else ever have this issue?

How fucked up is it to quit during busy season?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:49 AM PST

I know it would be a dick move but I just fucking hate this shit. I dread going into work every day and get absolutely no enjoyment from the work. I'm being pushed into duties and things that I'm just not ready for but have to do because there is nobody else that can do it. I don't even have another job lined up and I'm not even sure I would try to find anything to do with accounting anyway. But if I left this place would literally be fucked. Like me telling my boss I'm done would make his life a living hell. Just looking for some advice or words of encouragement I guess.
