The Small Business Administration has announced that the federal Paycheck Protection Program will reopen beginning next week.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:38 PM PST

beginning next week, offering a much-needed financial lifeline to small businesses that have been suffering from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic for almost a year.

Applications will initially be limited to smaller, community-based lenders, a response to widespread criticism that larger banks and companies with existing access to capital were favored during the first round of loans that went out last year. Recent data on those loans has also found that minority-owned businesses were the last to receive assistance.

This time around, the SBA pledges a more equitable process. In addition to placing smaller lenders at the front of the line, it released new guidance on accessing capital specifically aimed at underrepresented business owners, including women, people of color, and veterans.

Smaller businesses that did not receive a PPP loan the first time around can begin to apply on Monday, January 11. Those that did receive one of the original loans can apply for a second PPP loan beginning on Wednesday, January 13, provided they meet eligibility requirements. For larger applicants, the program will open "shortly thereafter," the SBA said Friday in a joint announcement with the U.S. Treasury Department.

Authorized as part of the coronavirus stimulus package passed in December, the PPP has been extensively revised from its original form, whose focus on payroll costs was seen as too restrictive by many business owners. While job retention is still the goal, the new loans will come with more flexibility, the SBA says. Among the program's new details:

"Borrowers can set their PPP loan's covered period to be any length between 8 and 24 weeks to best meet their business needs" "PPP loans will cover additional expenses, including operations expenditures, property damage costs, supplier costs, and worker protection expenditures" "The Program's eligibility is expanded to include 501(c)(6)s, housing cooperatives, direct marketing organizations, among other types of organizations" "The PPP provides greater flexibility for seasonal employees" "Certain existing PPP borrowers can request to modify their First Draw PPP Loan amount" "Certain existing PPP borrowers are now eligible to apply for a Second Draw PPP Loan."

Kid looking to start a tea business kinda stuck

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:07 AM PST

Hey there! I am Liam, 13 years of age, and considering starting a small business. I noticed recently that I would like to start making a bit of income so I can afford more expensive things I want. I used to mow lawns and rake leaves with my brother, but that hasn't worked out well since Covid.

When reading books about finance and money, it really inspired me that I should start a business. I would like to do it on something I enjoy, so that brought me to two things: Electronics projects (Arduino and such), along with tea. Now that I assumed people wouldn't hire a kid as a freelance electronic prototyping person, tea it is. I had done loads of research, and making and selling custom tea blends seems to be a stable idea, except how many other people do it.

I have done loads of research on producing the products, where I will buy the essential stuff, how packaging could be, and etc. I am willing to invest up to 500$ (of my money) into a start-up, but I just don't really know if it's a great idea. There are so many other people that have a business in the same subject, and I don't really know if I could sell the products or whatever. I don't know.

I have the whole business idea basically planned out, along with branding, marketing, and yea, but I just am kind of stuck on if it's even a good idea, if I will make a moneys back, etc. In general, what should I do? I don't quite even know what I should ask.

Running a Tiktok with 130K, average views per day -200k to 900k, how much to charge for promo?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:09 AM PST

Hey guys I've got a tiktok page that's doing really well, I've had a few people asking for promo not sure what price I should charge. I could hire a manager to manage my tiktok and small business but in all honesty I like being in control and I manage things well.

How much do you think is reasonable to charge, for 15 second promos for brands. I've got a number of ads lined up not sure how much I should charged .

Moving from Owners Draw to W2

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:04 AM PST

I want to make sure I understand this properly.

I own an LLC and am the sole employee. During 2020 I paid myself an owners draw and so I know I'm subject to quarterly taxes for that.

However, I'm moving to a payroll service starting 2021 and will be paid as a w2 employee. My understand is that because I'm having income taxes withheld from my payroll, that I will no longer need to pay quarterly taxes.

    Am I understanding that correctly?

Can anyone help me figure out USPS shipping costs?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 10:56 PM PST

So I run a record label, and send little cassette tapes internationally quite often. One cassette tape weighs about 2 oz or so. I ship them through International First class (cheapest,) in a 6x10 padded envelope. It always ends up costing $14.50, regardless of the int. destination. I send one at a time, but sometimes I've send two in the same envelope, and it still costs $14.50. Anyways, I've recently started getting my record into some stores in various countries, and that means I have to ship multiple at a time, up to 25. I shipped 6 using a bigger padded envelope, and it came out to $26.50 I think. I know they have a flat rate padded envelope for shipping that is $27, but I was curious to know if I would have gotten the same $14.50 if I had shipped them all in the smaller envelope. Does anyone know if they can help me out? I really can't find any information about it on their website. Thanks in advance.

    Update on PPP Loan

Message from Jennifer Roberts, CEO of Chase Business Banking

I know that many business owners, including likely you, are paying close attention to announcements about the additional $285 billion Congress approved for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans for small businesses. Below are highlights of what we know, and I'll share updates and details as we learn more.

    • First time borrowers. In general, borrowers can have no more than 500 employees and their business must have been in operation as of February 15, 2020. The first loan can be up to 2.5 times the business' average monthly payroll costs, up to a $10 million loan maximum.
    • Second-time borrowers. Businesses can apply for a second PPP loan if they've spent or expect to spend the full amount of their first PPP loan before they receive funding for the second loan. In general, borrowers can have no more than 300 employees. The second loan can be up to the business' average monthly payroll costs, up to a $2 million loan maximum.

      • Accommodations and Food Services companies with NAICS code 72 can borrow up to 3.5 times the business' average monthly payroll costs, up to a $2 million loan maximum.
      • All businesses applying for a second PPP loan must show that their business revenue declined by at least 25% in any quarter in 2020 compared to the same quarter in 2019.
      • Businesses can apply for a second loan whether or not they have requested Forgiveness.
    • These highlights will apply to many borrowers, but there are some exceptions. For full program details, visit SBA.gov and Treasury.gov.

    Timing

Congress has set aside funds for new and smaller borrowers, borrowers in underserved communities, and for community and smaller lenders. So, the SBA will roll out the PPP program in phases:

    • Some community and smaller lenders, expected to start January 11 (first loan) and January 13 (second loan).
    • All other participating lenders, including Chase, shortly after that.

We'll update this page as we know more.

    How to prepare

    • You may want to contact your accountant, attorney or other trusted advisors.
    • To apply through Chase, you will need an active Chase business checking account. If you don't have one, open one here or go to a branch. It may take up to 10 days upon account opening before you are able to apply for a PPP loan.
    • Keep checking back here for updates.

Thank you for being a Chase customer,

Received my first order on a woodworking! Can it grow?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:34 PM PST

Started woodworking as a hobby and reviewing it now for a small side business.

Over the last year, I started woodworking as a hobby, bought used tools to get started (couldn't afford new ones and as a hobby itself it is expensive). I have learned to use different tools and designing software.

I have built myself a work bench, corner floating shelves and key & coat hanger.

Today, I received first order for key & coat hanger. Quickly reviewed the requirements, made a design and shared the proof with the client. Within an hour I had an advanced payment from the client. Can't wait for the weekend to get started on this client's project.

Right now, I can only afford to spend some hours over the weekend.

If I want to convert this hobby to a small side business, what steps should I take? How can I analyze the market need and reach out to right audience? Shall I focus on local or online or both?

    Any inputs will help. Thanks.

Edit: Is it worth to pursue a business in woodworking?

Looking for people who are willing to help, motivate, and chat along the journey FBA

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 10:15 PM PST

    Hello All,

I am looking to create a friendship(s) on learning the amazon FBA process. Looking to create a small chat possibly on discord to help each other on lacking knowledge, daily motivation and interesting news along our journey.

A little bit about myself; I currently am working full time as an engineer in a top 100 company in the US. I am tired of the work life of being told what my new hours are, when or when not to take vacation, what extra days I have to work ect. In shorter terms, I am trying to replace or come close to replacing my income and become FREE! I am currently on track to releasing my first product here soon as I have been doing a ton of research.

If you would like to add me on discord the user is "Aub#1443"

If this is not allowed to be posted please remove, but this didn't seem to break any guidelines.

Two separate LLCs, parent-subsidiary or other structure?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:02 AM PST

I have a mostly online Ohio single-member LLC which currently makes money. I'm also working on a fully online "side project" in the same industry but is a completely separate service from that money-making business. Currently, all the funds to get that side project up and running are coming directly from and only from my money-making LLC. The side project probably won't bring in any money for several months and possibly up to a year, but will continue to have expenses including paying contractors and running/developing the website. I'm wondering how I should set up and structure these businesses going forward. Should I set up a parent-subsidiary relationship for this, two separate LLCs, or some other structure?

How are you dealing with employees' anxiety and underperformance?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:13 PM PST

I'm tiny operation, unfortunately our main profit center is shutdown due to COVID (personal services). Our online orders + subsidies etc show we have lots of room and I'm working on new things for making money since I can be doing services.

The other staff member I have that goes into the shop to help with online orders and curbside pickups is unfortunately really underperforming. We've talked and I know it's anxiety, they're working with a pro etc to work on it . It's only like 6hr a week of work (I pay for more), we have Asana for checklists and on a busy day it's maybe 5 orders (2-4 items each).

I've been doing alright for the last few months anxiety wise but now watching all these spectacularly stupid fuck ups are just driving me crazy. While I sympathize with how crippling anxiety and the current world can be, I also am finding myself in a situation that is hurtful to the business and me. Are any of you feeling the same experience?

    Scheduling

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:19 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I am hoping you can help me. I am in need of scheduling appointment software of some kind. We have customers who schedule appointments long in advance and then when out appointments come around they forget and aren't home. I also don't want to spend a ton of time calling customers.

I have looked into Calendly, Acuity, Appointmentfix. They are almost what I want. Maybe one of these listed above are capable of what I need and I haven't figured it out yet. I think AppointmentFix is close to what I want but I have to manually text the reminder, but at this point, that might be better than having to constantly call or send an email myself.

I have 3 handymen I need to schedule, and I want to keep it on one calendar. I use Gmail,

I want to be able to set the appointment time. They vary in time and length depending on the work that needs to be done (and I don't want the customer to be able to schedule their own because we have handymen that have specific skillsets).

I am looking for a scheduling software that will send automated emails/texts to confirm or decline appointments with the customer and will send the email/ text reminder 24 hours in advance to the customer.

I want customers to acknowledge a cancellation policy in some way, or at least have it referenced when scheduled so they are aware of a cancellation fee.

Do you guys have any suggestions? We use ConnecTeam to schedule our employees which works great, except when I need to change appointments for customers, and it doesn't send anything to the customers because it is just for our employees.

    Thanks for your help.

    Second Round PPP

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:15 AM PST

Just spoke with my accountant, the best thing to do currently is get all your number in order and make sure you qualify for the second round, once you accomplish this its sit back and wait for the SBA to put out the application and what paperwork you will need to prove your 25% loss. If you want you can gather your tax returns, monthly sale tax receipts, and your P&L for both years. I also made a spreadsheet to help me.

Too many Google Business listing photos?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:14 PM PST

I regularly upload recent photos to my Google Business listing under the assumption that an active listing is one liked by the algorithm. I now have over 1500 photos uploaded by owner and on my end the upload page is damn near unusable as it tries to load everything.

Should I be going about this differently? I'm a service business so no photos in particular would be out of date. Deleting one by one is a pain as well.

    Small business tax deduction question.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:25 PM PST

Ask a photographer, I sometime use editors from Facebook to edit images that I cannot complete on time by myself. Are these services tax deductible at the end of the year? I am paying them through PayPal and these editors are from Pakistan or Vietnam. Should I open a PayPal for my business account to show my CPA transactions throughout the year?

What would be your next move?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

I run an online fitness business with my mother. We create fitness content for older adults and generate revenue through in-content ads and DVD sales. We've been working on it for two years and while it's still a side project for both of us, it's finally starting to generate enough income to where we're both taking a small paycheck each month. The rest of the earnings we've been putting into a business checking account for incidentals, but it's finally gotten to the point where we have a not-insignificant amount of cash we can use on something to help take the business to the next level. My question is, what should that something be?

Here are a few options we're considering.

--Advertising. Until this point we've grown almost entirely organically. We had some limited success with Google Ads about a year back, but the margins were so tiny for the amount of time they required us to manage that if we were to do it again we'd want to enlist an advertising agency or some other expert who could help us achieve a more significant ROI.

--Professional marketing help. My background is in marketing, but right now I spend all my time on the operations of this business and don't have time for things like pitching brands for sponsorships and other channels that would bring in new revenue.

--Setting up an entirely new revenue channel. An online subscription platform would be the most obvious choice, but would require some heavy lifting on the tech side and possibly a total redesign of our website.

--An admin to take smaller tasks off both our plates, like keeping up with our social media channels, responding to customer emails, etc. and maybe grow into a larger role in the future.

Other small business owners, what did you spend money on that helped grow your business in a meaningful way?

Should I operate as an LLC?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:55 PM PST

    Hi,

I started my own corporate wellness business a little over a year ago and it's going well. I have a business name, logo, email address but I'm not sure if I should open up a business account and start operating as an LLC. I've heard a lot of ppl say I should and other say it's not worth it. I projected my income last year and submitted quarterly taxes for 2020 so that I wouldn't get taxed big time at the end of the year. That's about all my tax guy recommend.

I'm not quite sure what to look up as pros/cons and if I should or not. I live in Cali. I guess it depends on the state? Any advice is greatly appreciated thank you. Cheers.
