What Stock Question are you too embarrassed to ask?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 03:31 PM PST

In my experience, Active Learning is a cornerstone to successful trading but I have found that most people are embarrassed to "look dumb" by asking questions that may or may not be simple. I fundamentally can not believe 1 investor/trader knows everything and have yet to come across someone who does.
    Why is that?
Because the rules and market correlations constantly change.
There is no place for pride in your portfolio when you are learning.
    Ask questions.

Guess the Company #6 (due diligence / ticker trivia)

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:24 PM PST

    Previously, on Guess the Company

Hi fellow kids, I'm back again today with yet another DD where I reveal the ticker at the end rather than the beginning.

Let's see how quickly you can figure out which company this is:

-This NYSE listed company is trading at the same level as where it was 1 year ago, gaining 80% since its lowest point in March 2020

-This company has a 5 year average return on capital of 6.1%, compared to its industry's average of 0.91%.

-Based in New York, this company was founded by Henry Wells and William Fargo

-As of the last report, this company has $46b of total debt

-This company recently drew the attention of federal investigators who are looking into whether it has been using "misleading and aggressive sales tactics" to sell its products

-With over 100 million customers, this company facilitates over $1 trillion in revolving credit annually

-In 2016, this company lost an exclusive partnership with a multinational corporation to Citigroup.

-Losing this one single partnership COST this company about 10% of its revenue!

-This company currently pays a quarterly dividend of 43 cents

-Its largest shareholder Berkshire Hathaway inc owns approximately 18% of this company

Have you made your guess yet?

If your guess was WFC (Wells Fargo & Co), you would be wrong!

The correct answer is actually AXP (American Express Co.). Outlook for AXP: AMEX is becoming more and more aggressive with its sales tactics to coerce business owners into accepting their product while at the same time sticking to its modus operandi of charging 50% higher merchant fees than its competitors Visa and Mastercard on the basis that AMEX cardholders are perceived as affluent. According to American Express, AMEX cardholders average 60% higher income than non-AMEX cardholders. This statistic is probably skewed by the fact that Warren Buffet has been carrying an AMEX card since 1964.

With e-commerce and alternative payment options on the rise, physical charge cards are going to become a thing of the past. Amex's business model which revolves almost entirely around collecting merchant fees is on shaky grounds. TLDR: Boomer stock, no thanks. OPTAP: $120

Disclaimer: I do not hold any positions in this company. This is not financial or investment advice.

    Nio a good buy?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:42 PM PST

I'm new to stocks, yadda yadda yadda.

Been watching NIO grow and all this hype around it as well as TSLA.

Worth the purchase? Looking to buy about 10 shares, nothing crazy.

Just curious on others opinions who've been doing this longer.

    Thanks

    The Future of Tesla Stock

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 06:09 PM PST

So I was wondering if I should start buying Tesla stock. They split awhile ago from $2400 and it went to $600. Now it's at $880.02. Do we see this going much higher? I'm a BIG supporter of Tesla especially after rumors of a solar powered phone and the way they're utilizing electricity. I think the company as well as Elon musk will revolutionize electricity as we know it.

What is your opinion of Tesla stock?

    switching trading platforms, need advice

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST

    Hi All!

I'm looking to switch trading platforms mainly because margin rates are so high on Ameritrade. I was looking at ETrade and it's a tiny bit cheaper but not much of a difference. I do almost all of my trades on my phone. A lot of my trades are held long term with some short term investments.

I've never transferred to another trading platform but does everything transfer including my stocks that I used margin for? Do I just pay Ameritrade for the margin rate once I transfer out?

Interactive brokers look really attractive with their margin rates. Wondering if it's trusted & secure though. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

What will happen to stock market with a Biden presidency

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 06:26 PM PST

I've been scratching my head w this question and on the one hand we have stimulus and unemployment money which should push stocks even higher but in the long run with the dollar dropping and higher taxes and interest rates.... could bring some red days and months for the overall market.. (except for energy and EV stocks) so what's the consensus? What will happen to the market in the months and yrs ahead?

American expat wanting to start trading in stocks but can't

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 04:00 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

As the titles suggests I want to start investing in some stocks as I see it as a good opportunity to start earning some extra money.

However, I'm living in Germany and every exchange website I try to sign up for says I'm not allowed to trade as a US citizen living outside of the US.

Is there a way around this? Is it just these websites or something to do with a law? Is anyone in a similar situation and has found a solution?

    Thanks a lot!

This has been asked here before but...

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:51 PM PST

It doesn't appear that years ago there was a good answer.

In the USA we are allowed to access the SSE and SZSE through approved brokerages and institutions. There are a lot of restrictions on these things obviously.

Now, through traditional brokerages I can see various ETFs and even companies over in China that provide me limited access to things traded on these markets.

I suspect however that there are differences between availability between respective brokerages.

My question is: Is there a specific brokerage that allows us greater access to the SSE and SZSE over others?

Free money for almost everyone. I don't agree with the minimum wage increase though. I've read a lot on both sides of the story and IMO will do more harm than good.

    Tax question carrying over loss

    Hi guys,

I have a question regarding taxes, sorry if it's stupid. If I lost 100k in one year and made 100k in the next, does that cancel each other out or am I limited to just 3000 loss for the next 33 years?

    Thanks!

    Boeing jet missing in Indonesia

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 06:00 AM PST

Boeing just can't get a break at this time... so sad to hear this again... we have to find out more, i don't think this was a MAX ... Think i might reduce the Boeing allocation soon...

    NEWS

A Sriwijaya Air Boeing (NYSE:BA) 737-500 plane with 62 people on board lost contact with the control tower after taking off from Jakarta on a domestic flight.

    • The plane lost more than 10K feet of altitude in less than a minute before falling off the radar, according to tracking data from FlightRadar24.
    • Local reports in Indonesia indicate that suspected debris from the plane has been found in the sea off the city, although it has not been confirmed it is from the missing plane.
    • Looking toward 2021, Boeing is hoping to see demand pick up and for it to cut the gap in deliveries with Airbus this year.

    ~UPDATE~

The plane, a 737-500 aircraft, was 26 years old, much older than the Boeing 737 MAX that was grounded in March 2019 after two fatal crashes, according to a report from Bloomberg.

What happens if I use only RSI for buying/selling stocks?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 11:37 AM PST

I am an amateur in stock with a good understanding of math, numbers, charts, etc. I have been thinking of this for quite some time but I couldn't really get a proper answer:

RSI is an indicator of whether a stock is oversold (30-), or overbought (70+). So, my thinking is that there might be mainly two reasons for the overselling case which are the stock is shitty (the company is crashing) or for undervalued at the time (e.g., bad news, etc) in which case, the price will increase at one point. (Opposite is true).

Suppose that I know a company is solid and is expected not to crash any time soon (like Google, Apple, FB, etc). My questions are:

    1. Is my understanding correct (i.e., overselling -> shitty company or undervaluation)? If so, what else could be the reason for this overselling that I need to know?
    2. What happens if I buy their stocks when RSI < 20 and sell RSI > 80 (or another condition like price += x%)? I know it is not as simple as that but it seems there is a good correlation between RSI and stock price based on the charts I looked at.
    3. If 2 is a positive approach, is there any other indicator that I can use together with RSI? So the chance of a "good decision will increase".

And then just amplify the effect?

How long we will be riding this market to the moon? Does someone has a number.. For my sell order?

    Small Cap opportunities for 2021

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 10:02 AM PST

Next week I have to pay taxes for 2020 and I'll have some leftover cash for next years taxes. I usually put them into stocks that I think might double over the year. Last year it was Zoom Video Communications (ZM) & Appian Corp (APPN).

This year I want to find some small cap opportunities and would like to hear which ones you are looking at too.

    My shortlist is so far:

    • ORGO
    • MBIO
    • GOEV
    • PRTK
    • CLRB
    • ORTX
    • KBNT
    • CRIS
    • TLGT
    • SEAC

What do you think Tesla’s market cap is?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 08:24 AM PST

Not currently invested, don't plan to. Not a conversation about to the moon or a conversation about "tHe FaLl iS SoON."

Lately seen a lot of posts discussing tesla stock price. I have noticed interestingly people throw around the stock price as if this if the share price determines when to buy or not, how much it could have to grow etc. As in wow a 100$/share?? Could 10x my money if goes to 1000$!! 1000$ a share? Oh would have to hit 10000$ a share to 10x my money that'll never happen. Alternatively discussions being like oh they are 800$ now easily 1000$ when biden takes office.

No one ever discusses market cap though. 1000$ a share if that represents a market cap of 100billion would mean tons of room, 10$/share if represented a market cap of 5T i would hope only could go down. But as I said it seems no one discusses market cap with tesla.

Sure okay Elon is a genius you say. Not just a car company okay I buy that. But just curious what everyones thoughts on its market cap are. Oil is worth ~2 trillion. So is it that? Do you believe tesla will eliminate all oil and be the only competitor in the market? If they create first grids and battery powered anything, what stops other mega companies from making some small tweaks and instantly having a similar product?

Genuinely curious hear tons of bears saying it'll go down, okay other than random share prices i see cited what market cap do you think is reasonable. Alternatively people still loading on at 800$/share what do you think market cap is, must be at least significantly higher as why would you want to take on big risk now for small potential upside.

For current investors, finally why isn't this market cap all priced in? Dems have senate and house, known fact now, nothing else is tangibly changing in the company. So why will it keep going up besides euphoria/fomo?
