My mother is planning to wrongfully claim me as a dependent, which will cause me to lose out on a LOT of financial aid for college.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:35 AM PST

Background info: My parents are divorced and have a parenting plan in place which states that my older brother and I have split custody between both parents and each parent gets to claim one of us as dependents. My dad is supposed to claim my brother and my mom gets to claim me.

At the beginning of 2020, my mom kicked me out. I moved in full time with my dad, and have been putting his financial info on all of my scholarship applications, financial aid applications, and on the FAFSA since I lived with him exclusively for almost the entire year. Now, my mom is saying she still plans to claim me as a dependent. Im worried that if I have 2 parents incomes listed instead of my dad, I will lose a lot of the government assistance I was planning on getting. The parenting plan does state that she gets to claim me, but I am 18 now and she did not provide any of my financial support this year. Is there anything i can do to prevent her from claiming me?

    Edit: I am in Colorado

[MD] My parents filled out several medical forms specifically intended for me which resulted in my ADHD diagnosis being repealed.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:15 AM PST

My parents do not believe in mental health problems. I am however, diagnosed with ADHD, Depression, and Anxiety which requires a 504 plan at my school. I had a virtual doctors visit yesterday to confirm if I am eligible for the 504 plan and my parents took advantage of that to take the forms which I am supposed to fill out and they filled them out and submitted them.

This resulted in numerous things occurring...

•My prescription for ADHD medications is going to be cancelled

•I am no longer eligible for counseling from our insurance

    And worst of all

•My 504 is to be removed

Now one of the forms was specifically designated for them, but there were two forms specifically designated for me, the patient, which they completed "for me".

I examined the results of the questionnaires all the questions referred to whether I had felt a certain way mentally in the past few days, weeks, or months, there was no way they could've answered those questions.

I am only 15 and I feel like my parents crossed a line. Can they legally do what they did?

UPDATE: Found mom's will and she wanted the house sold, but I want to keep it.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:49 AM PST

Hello! I'm from Texas and my mother passed away last week. I have been asking in this sub of what to do going forward since she passed without a will and I am her only child. My SO and I went to mom's house and found a holographic will. However in this will, she stated "I want my house sold and all proceeds to go to my daughter." Will this legally hold up? I planned on living in the house, so I don't want it to be sold. Should I show my attorney this will or just pretend it doesn't exist and proceed with probate and heirship?

[California] Seller on Depop is demanding sports bras back after I paid her for them; she's claiming I'm in possession of stolen goods and is demanding compensation

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:25 AM PST

I bought six sports bras and two 90s crop tops on Depop from a seller in New York, now she's been messaging me via there demanding them back claiming:

You got stolen goods, I got the goods on you.

Jenna (the seller) is demanding compensation for the goods which I paid for; I sent her money via PayPal.

She's threatening to get her sister to come and get me unless I send her the goods back.

I spent around $200 via this Depop store and thought I got good customer service.

I've also had phone calls at 4am from this depop seller, and had gifts delivered to my house (mainly alcohol and candy) and emails to my work address (I'm on my company's website) demanding compensation.

I don't know whether to go to the cops in my area or in NYC; who should I go to.

This has gone on for six weeks now, and the seller is insistent about me sending the sports bras back within the next 3 weeks.

Landlord put out rat poison without notification. Dog got into it.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:23 AM PST

I live in Chicago, IL. Landlord put rat poison in a common area outside without notifying residents. It was placed under a neighbors deck. My dog got into it when coming back from a walk. She's at the vet now. There are children and other dogs that live in this apt complex.

Does my landlord need to notify residents of the poison placement? If so, could he be responsible for vet costs?

Edit: The active ingredient of the poison is diphacinone. It was not placed in a container of any sort. It was spread out on the ground.

Two different drivers hit my house. Do I have any legal options?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:26 AM PST

    Location: Wisconsin

In August of 2019 in the middle of the night a presumably drunk driver

drove blew through a stop sign, ran across my neighbor's yard and hit my parked car in my driveway. Then his car continued sideways into my house. I woke up immediately and within 60 seconds ran outside. His airbags had deployed and he had fled the scene but left his car there. I called 911 since I had no clue what to do. The firefighters and EMT showed up and they towed his car away. My car was totaled. The house had quite a bit of siding and chimney damage. Since the guy fled the scene and I have a totaled car along with house damage I filed a claim with my insurance. 1 month later, the driver showed up to the local police station and provided insurance information.

I handled my entire claim through my insurance. It was estimated that his speed was 90 miles per hour to go airborne like he did and go the good 100 feet through my neighbor's yard.

In April of 2020, I was on the deck in my backyard and it happened again. This time, a woman kept driving through the stop sign and plowed into my car and the crashed into my deck. I was trapped for a few minutes until I could get my leg loose and I then went to see if I could offer her assistance. She tried to restart her car and pull away, but her car was pinned in the wreckage. Another call to 911 and the police arrested her and towed away her car. Another claim to my insurance company to replace my again totaled car and rebuild my deck and additional damage to the corner of my house. I believe that she was also insured but since she was high, non-cooperative and being arrested, I didn't have the time to get her insurance info.

I asked the village where I live to do something regarding these accidents for public safety. The responded by installing signage with a concrete base to deter drivers from crashing into my house. My house was built in the 20's and nothing like this has ever happened before. If I showed you pictures of how far my house is from the road, you would think this isn't even really possible.

I then received a non-renewal letter from my insurance for both car and auto. My rates about doubled for car and about tripled for home.

Obviously, this really stinks since I wasn't even driving or doing anything other than sitting at home. Plus I won't lie, my partner and I have been a bit high strung over these incidents and get a bit stressed out when we observe traffic doing the old rolling stop at the sign once in a while.

My question is do I have any legal remedy for any of these additional out of pocket costs? I kept a log of time I had to miss work to deal with contractors and such for these repairs. Additionally, in the first accident I lost equity in car. Also, my rates increased dramatically for insurance. Do I have any recourse for this? Are there any other options that I have? I realize that you can sue anyone for anything, but is that feasible here?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for reading the long story.

If I were to report my mother to CPS or an authority of some kind for not sending my brother to school for the past three years, what would the legal consequences be for her? (Michigan)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:53 PM PST

My mother has not provided my brother (15) with a proper education over the past few years; as he did not enroll in the second semester of eighth grade, did not enroll in the first semester of ninth grade, and was not enrolled in the first semester of tenth grade this year and she provided zero homeschooling.

My brother has really bad anger issues; such as punching walls, kicking holes in doors, etc. I feel she might be a bit scared to get him to attend school, but she is doing absolutely nothing to help him prepare for the future. He has some type of learning disability and has struggled with school a lot. He is playing video games all day and has been staying up until 6 AM for the past few years and I am very worried about his mental and physical well being. I am also quite scared for my own well being, as I am scared he will harm me in some way - as he has threatened to a few times. I do not want him to become a danger to society.

What legal consequences would be in store for her if I were to report this? Is there a way to go about reporting this without this seeming like it is entirely her fault, or will the law treat her without remorse? I've read that I have 30 days to move out if she does kick me out for reporting her, is that true?

    Thank you!

Seller sold house while under contract with me

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:49 AM PST

Hello everyone -looking for some help here:

I was under an Agreement of Sale for a home until 1/31. Closing was supposed to happen 1/29 and the seller apparently sold the house to someone else as a cash sale a couple weeks ago.

Currently my title company is trying to see what solutions they can work with all parties.

I have only talked to one lawyer so far who seems to think I can only sue for damages for my inspection/appraisal costs.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I was doing a full 203k where the property was going to most likely have equity in it, and there are no properties like this in my area.

I am in the state of Pennsylvania

Employer held a handgun to my head while in the main office

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 03:39 PM PST

**Update: The mentioned director has been released from jail with the federal detainer dropped pending the investigation. Lawyer must be amazing.. The mentioned firearm has not yet been recovered but they are executing a search warrant on the office where this occurred. I don't know much more than that at the moment but I'm a little surprised he was able to pull off having a federal detainer dropped.

I'll try to keep this post organized and explain the situation as best I can. I greatly appreciate any advice or guidance provided.

A little background to begin. I am a manager at a midsized home health care agency in PA. I have been at this company for just shy of a year. We typically operate smoothly with a little hiccup here and there, never anything major. Recently due to an issue beyond our control, the area that I currently operate was running a bit in the red. We held a meeting in office today to address the ongoing issue. During this meeting which included the Director of Operations, his assistant, a HR Specialist and myself, a disagreement began over what the root cause of the deficit was. During this disagreement, the Director of Operations began screaming and reached in a drawer at the desk he was at and proceeded to pull a handgun out and point it directly at the side of my head while threatening to kill me. The remaining office staff ran out and called the police who showed up rather quickly and the situation immediately deescalated when he noticed the police outside. The police then determined he is actively on federal probation and he was subsequently arrested and charged.

While I have an idea of what the next steps are going to look like for him, I have absolutely no idea what my next steps are supposed to be. Obviously I'm pretty upset by the situation and clearly cannot return to this job. Do I have grounds to sue? Can I file unemployment while I'm seeking my next job?Do I just stay thankful I'm alive and keep moving? Any advice on how I should approach this would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance everyone!

County-operated public sewer pump is spilling out across my yard, into a creek, and they won’t fix it

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

Hi all, hoping to hear some advice on this nasty problem I'm having. My location is West Virginia.

I moved into a new house in October. At the far end of my property next to the road is a county-operated public sewer pump known as a lift station. It looks similar to this one from Google. It services the sewer for my house and at least one neighbor, maybe some other neighbors. These systems are common across suburbs in the US and they have a built in alarm with a red flashing light in case they become overloaded. If it alarms, you're supposed to contact the sewage company for them to resolve it. Like most other municipality websites in the US, my local sewer company's website has guidance to call right away if your red light is on.

Every time there is heavy or prolonged rainfall, with there being probably six occasions since October, the pump reservoir fills all the way up, red light turns on, and it begins overflowing all around the lid with disgusting sewer water. The sewer runs across the grass about 6 feet and enters a creek which is also on my property.

I've been on the phone with the sewer company every time it has happened since October. They always promptly send a guy in a truck to come look at it. The technician manually turns off the red light so I "don't have to watch it flash all day" even with the sewer still pouring out. Despite the willingness to send someone out each time, the company is not taking this seriously enough to perform a permanent fix. They think that sending someone out to turn off the light and sometimes throw handfuls of lye (cleaning agent) on the sewer trail across my grass is an acceptable solution for the problem.

In their most recent visit, I was told by the technician that the sewage infrastructure in the area I'm in can't hold the capacity during heavy rain, and there is nothing that can be done about the overflow on my property. It overflowed again yesterday, but I noticed the red light doesn't turn on anymore. I could speculate that the last technician permanently disabled the red light so I'd stop making them come out to my house, but who knows.

I am enormously bothered by this problem, with the top three concerns being:

    1) This is causing environmental harm. Children play in or around the creek downstream. Fish and aquatic life are in the creek. Deer and all other wildlife drink from it.

    2) Public health. The creek empties into a river two miles away, which happens to serve as the city's drinking water source. This problem allows some amount of human waste and whatever other contaminants are poured into people's drains to ultimately end up there. I understand city water treatment facilities sanitize it per government standards, but obviously we need to protect the waterways.

    3) This is all taking place on my property — it's unsightly, unsanitary, and smells bad near my home any time it overflows. Not to mention the harm this could do to my property value to have a recurring sewage issue. I'd rather have a septic tank that I can ensure is maintained properly than to continue at the mercy of an unconcerned company.

Would I have a case in pursuing this? Are they breaking environmental or real estate laws by allowing this to continue on my property despite my repeated calls? What preparation should I be doing right now to have the most solid case if I did decide to pursue it legally?

For some extra detail about attempts to hold them accountable: I contacted the state Division of Natural Resources (DNR) about it. They said they don't have jurisdiction over it, but recommended another state-level environmental agency to contact. I haven't done this yet but I plan to. No idea how far I could end up down that rabbit hole. Hell, I've even considered contacting the EPA. Right now I'm just wanting to educate myself on possible next steps.

    Thank you for any input.

[CA] Tenant/Landlord: Am I responsible for concessions my Landlord has made with new tenants on a lease takeover?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:59 AM PST

I've been renting an apartment in Los Angeles and my lease ends at the end of February 2021. I've been looking for a new tenant to take over my lease since November 2020 to save money in areas I could due to COVID. My landlord found someone who wanted to rent starting in February 2021, which would start the last month of my lease. Lease was signed and I was tasked with moving out immediately the weekend of 1/23 as the tenant wanted to move in 1/29. I did not mind giving up a week that I paid for in order to accommodate the new tenant.

However, once I handed in my keys, my landlord informed me that they had offered the new tenant a three week concession in order for them to sign and that it would be my responsibility to pay for those three weeks. With the expenses I incurred to move everything out so suddenly + this sudden information about paying for the concessions, I would've been better off just letting the lease run out for the final month.

I have a trail of text showing discussions that the new tenant will move in 1/29 and that I was never informed that I'd be responsible for concessions beforehand and that it was only stated to me after I dropped my keys off. Do I have any Legal recourse to push back? I believe they will not give me back my full security deposit if I refuse to pay.

Won a case against landlord for security desposit, a lien was put on the property, but he still sold it without me ever getting paid -- now what? (Baltimore, MD)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:19 AM PST

It's my wife's situation, not mine, but it was easier to write the title as mine.

She rented an apartment in Baltimore, MD, back in 2007. She left at the end of her lease, cleaned it up, took pictures, and was out of there. He then wouldn't pay her back her $950 security deposit. By this time we had moved together far away, and she found a pro bono lawyer to handle the case. It went to court, she easily won with all of her evidence (the landlord didn't even show up), and she was awarded 3x the security deposit, so $2,850. But they couldn't force him to pay for whatever reason, and a lien was put on the property. We figured that was that, and at some point in the future she'd get the money when the property was sold.

My wife looked into the situation recently and found out the property had indeed been sold a few years ago, but she never got any of the money she was due. She's been contacting the city of Baltimore about it, and they basically said the guy closed his original bank account connected to the money, then sold the place, they never collected the lien because they didn't have access to the account, and now they're giving her the run-around to open a new case (they can't say against whom) since it's "expired".

What should she do? What type of lawyer would one even seek out? If the city of Baltimore still runs like it did years ago, it's horribly inefficient and no one knows what's going on, so it seems they're wrong when the people on the phone my wife has been talking to says to get a lawyer for rental situations. We're not in a position to spend a bunch of money on a lawyer to file paperwork and chase the city around to fulfill their duty of collecting a lien, so I'm hoping there's a pro bono or easy way to handle my wife being wronged on the repayment of her security deposit twice now.

In NC. My girlfriend's ex husband is stalking her and I, contacting us repeatedly via all social media and is now saying he is going to come here (he lives in NY) and propose to her and she is scared.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST

Sorry for typos, on phone. They have been divorced since 2018. Apparently he recently found out she was dating and (from his messages) is setting out to "ruin us and our relationship." We have blocked him on everything except her email so that we have some sort of proof that he is doing this, but one of his emails actually said "my lawyer told me to stop. I told her (the lawyer) to fuck off." So we also have another party involved in a way who has seen what's happening. With that, he is also messaging her family, most recently telling her sister that he is getting onto a plane and flying here to apparently propose to my girlfriend to have her back.

Let's leave me out of it and just say I'm the girlfriend (she doesn't Reddit); she is scared to death and getting extremely stressed out and doesn't know what may happen when he shows up. Is there anything we can do to try and get some form of protection for her in advance in case he actually does come? Right now I'm having her stay at my place because I don't think he knows where I live, but who knows, but he may also show up at her work or her sister's who lives nearby. I have found this link for our state, and am looking specifically at paragraph b, line 2, but am not sure if we can have anything done yet or not.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Canadian expat in U.S.; been fired for sexual abuse allegations against woman (who was 17 at the time), but the timeline seems impossible and my job doesn't require interaction with teens

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:38 AM PST

I'm a dual citizen working in California; I work in a startup dealing with customer data and marketing.

I've been fired due to allegations I sexually molested a teenage girl (17/F) in the company offices in 2014; but our company's employees are all 25 and older (I'm 37) and we don't even work with teens; our clientele are mainly B2B.

The girl is alleging I raped her in the company offices onMarch 5 2014; it's not that likely since the offices are only open M-F, 10-6 according to our company's website.

She claims the rape happened on March 5 2014 but I was at an off-site meeting that day in another city so it couldn't have happened; I wasn't in the office at all, and it was undergoing remodelling.

Teenagers don't form any part of our B2B client base.

I worry I may never be able to find another job in this tech field again; the allegations are puiblished on Facebook etc.

I suspect the allegations were made because (am I wrong here) I'm technically a public figure for appearing on the company's website as a "Customer Relations Support Specialist" (my job title).

I moved to the U.S. from Manitoba in 2011 and have been here ever since.

It's probably stupid to worry about, but could I be deported and would this ever get to court?

Should I start preparing for an attorney?

Can someone help me understand the eviction mortiorium? My 21 year old son used our family summer home for a week (with permission of course) and one of his friends refuses to leave and keeps citing an "eviction moritorium" Its a crazy story but I would love soom insight... thanks!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:32 PM PST

So we own a family vacation home that my wife and I purchased a few years ago its about an hour from where we live. My son and his roomates from college wanted to stay there over college break so they werent going to their respective families to quarentine (and also to avoid the potential spread of covid) so I happily agreed. I had only met 2 of the 5 kids going but I figured there would be no problem. I have a "Ring" doorbell on the house so I had seen no more than 6 cars in the driveway the entire time, meaning there were no parties being thrown (which was one of the agreements) and I had figured everything was fine.

They were staying there for a total of 35 days. I had texted with my son and about 2 weeks in spoke with him over the phone. Everything seemed fine. Then I spoke with him a day before they were leaving and he told me 2 of his friends said they wouldnt leave... and that they were saying because of an "eviction moritorium" they had a right to stay there without being evicted after staying for 30 nights. I figured it was a joke and just told my son to make sure he's the last one out of the house, turn off the lights and electronics, lock the doors, yadda yadda.

Well the morning they were supposed to leave, my son went to get coffee at a local place about 10 minutes away while everyone was packing to leave/leaving. He called me and said 2 of his friends had already left, and 1 had met him in the driveway saying that 2 kids (who I will now call A & B) had locked themselves inside and refused to leave. My son had tried to go to the door but it was locked and a chair on the inside was blocking it from even being opened. One of them had left an envelope taped to the door citing an eviction mortiorium, and basically saying that A & B would only be speaking with the home owner from here on out.

At first I had thought this was a prank because its so unbelievable, but when they refused to come out for 3 hours I knew they weren't kidding. I had my son leave and go back to school, and I got in my car and drove down to MY house to try and convince these entitled brats to get off my property.

I pulled up and walked in through the back door, because I always keep the master key for it. My kitchen was a wreck, there were plates and pans all over the place, empty bottles and cans around the table, it was disgusting. I went into one of the bedrooms and found A&B playing video games on a TV they dragged from the master bedroom. I unplugged it and they told me I legally had to be off the property because they were there first. They just kept telling me that if I had an issue to speak with their lawyer, but I told them to stop playing these stupid games and to just leave. I also should note that I told them both to put on masks and they refused, so knowing that I was potentially exposing myself to Covid-19 I just left the property telling them that they had no knowledge of the law, that they never rented my home so it didnt apply to them, and that they better leave.

Now here we are a day later. My husband drove down there at around 4AM and noticed the light on our porch was turned on, and heard speakers. He saw A & B with a bunch of random college aged kids partying through our living room window. He came back home and this morning we contacted A's parents, we got the parents contact information from our son's friend. The mother was super nice bjt basically said her son doesnt live with her anymore and theres nothing she could do.

These kids refuse to leave my house and are trying to deny us access. They are telling us because of the Covid eviction moritorium they can stay there and quote "the lawyers" will work out the payment and stuff after the Covid crisis is over or when they "feel like" leaving.

I have suspended the cable on the television and disabled the bedroom ceiling fans and lighting (they are connected to an app on our phone actually) and they contacted my son informing them that violates the eviction moritorium and to "reinstate" everything as was when they arrived.

If you want to picture the type of kids A&B are, they are your typical douchey frat boys that wear the pink shorts and button down shirts.

Im not one for reddit, but aside from getting an actual lawyer involved in these college kid level antics- What should I do? Im pretty sympathetic to the fact that college kids do crazy and spontaneous things and that they can be entitled, but this is another level.

I let women from a shelter temporarily stay in my basement or attic (apartments) but my neighbor reported me for illegally renting

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:09 AM PST

I have been letting women (and their children if they have any) from a nearby women's shelter temporarily stay in my attic or basement. The shelter partnered with me to do this and I had to undergo a background check before anyone stayed in my house. I'm NOT a landlord who is renting. I don't charge the women for anything, and often I share my own food, clothing etc if what comes from the shelter isn't enough. My place is just a temporary stop. It isn't a permanent living situation, it is only meant to be a temporary safe space. I've never had anyone longer than 45 days and those were rare cases, 99% of them stay less than 30 days.

Even though I'm not a landlord who is illegally renting my neighbor has reported me for exactly this. I'm being charged for illegally renting my basement and attic and not having all the things an apartment is supposed to have (both basement and attic are one room, basement has a kitchenette but the attic does not) not having bathrooms or running water in the apartments (there is one on my main floor and one upstairs they can use) and for having too many occupants at one time (I only have one family per apartment but sometimes the women have children with them). I'm also charged by the fire authorities for a long landry list of fire code violations (not enough exits, fire rated doors etc) and I have found out I'm even being investigated for my taxes too now even though I made no money or any kind of tax deductions from this.

I understand that if I was a landlord renting to people why these things would a problem. I know it would be illegal to rent this way. I'm just trying to help the women and the shelter. Now even the shelter is being looked at for allowing me to rent in the first place. This is all just a big misunderstanding but no one from any of the three investigations wants to listen it seems. My neighbor doesn't realize how much hurt he has caused here and all this will ultimately hurt the women from the shelter. I tried to explain it to him before but he still complained. I didn't do anything wrong but I'm being punished anyways. What should I be doing to explain so all this can go away? I have never been arrested before this or had so much as a ticket before. I didn't even gain from this, if anything I am down money because I helped. My location is the state of Massachusetts.

Can my employer legally do this?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:36 AM PST

So because of mental health I decided to resigned my position as a teacher. I then get a text message from my assistant principal saying that I owe them this month's paycheck because it was for February. I went to look at my recent paystub and it says 'Period end 12-25-20'. Therefore my recent paycheck that I received is for the month of December not February. I had received a bonus in December and I was told I would have to pay that back as well. Then they said that I would have to pay back the money they paid for my certification. They never paid for my certification. I've been paying that myself monthly. My question is can they make me pay back a bonus and a pay check?

Edit: I'm in a public school in Texas.

Apartment won't stop flooding and it hasn't been fixed. Landlord says I can break lease with 30 days notice(the lease says 60) I want out now. Atlanta Georgia

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:02 AM PST

I signed a 6 month lease starting November 15th. Every time it has rained more than a sprinkle the yard outside my door floods and then it comes inside, seeping up from the ground. It's a basement apartment.

First instance was Nov 30, I reported it but didn't even call the emergency line cause it was easily soaked up by a few towels. Landlord response was a drop off a dehumidifier, and they said they checked to make sure the pump in the yard was working. On dec 1 they promised that they would be installing a second pump.

Second rain was dec 24, I called the emergency line but didn't make a request in the online portal. Again it was little enough for me to mop up. A few days later they dropped off a new dehumidifier since the first one never worked.

Third rain was Jan 1, much more rain. The water covered my whole kitchen and hallway. Called the emergency line as well as made a portal request. Included many pictures of the flooding inside and outside, including water being up over the tops of my shoes a few feet outside my door, and the pump being completely submerged. I told them on the phone that it was more water than I could handle. They sent a plumber that night to suck it up.

Jan 4 I request a cleaning crew to clean up the mud and the nasty smelling anti mould spray the plumber had used. They comply and send one for the next day. At this point they tell me they are in the middle of reorganizing their maint. Department and hiring a new manager for it.

Jan 7 I got fed up and posted a lengthy message(firm but not rude) to the maintenance request. I said I am leaving town at the end of the month for 1-3 months and I need to know that the problem will be fixed before I go(true). I pointed out it had been over 5 weeks since I was promised a new pump would be put in and it hasn't happened. I get a call from a higher up who noticed it and she assures me that she'll personally oversee it.

Jan 9 a team comes to overhaul the drainage system. They reroute the gutter, install a new pump (I assume it's under a lid I haven't tried to open) and add a grate into the ground that wasn't there before. They did not try to dump a bunch of water in to test it. It doesn't rain more than a sprinkle the next few weeks

Jan 26th this morning I wake up around midnight when it was supposed to start raining but there was nothing going on so I fell back asleep til 4am. Around then I got up to pee and stepped in a puddle, there was more water than ever before. I open the door and the water level in the yard is higher than ever before. I called the emergency line (no idea why I bothered) and took pictures and posted it on the portal. When I woke up again around 830 it had been done raining for a while. All the water in the yard had seeped into the ground EXCEPT the pump and the grate are still completely submerged. Mid morning someone comes to suck up the water, it's not the plumber from last time, just a maintenance guy and his vacuum is not nearly as good, there is still standing water under my washer/dryer

The higher up lady called me again and I said I would like to exit the lease as it had been almost 2 months since it was first reported and it's only gotten worse. A few hours later I got an email from the lady who rented me the apt saying that the management had approved a 30 day notice with no penalty. I responded that I wanted to exit the lease by the end of the month with no penalties and that I would like the super scammy non-refundable deposit they made me use back, as my contract was signed under false pretenses. And I said I find it very, very difficult to believe that they weren't 100% aware of the problem when they rented the apt to me.

So sorry to write a novel but do you think there's any chance I'll get what I want? Would I need a lawyer to stand a chance? There is a paper trail for every event except the Xmas Eve rain

Husband left the country, refuses to come back.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST

This is in Los Angeles, CA.

My (42F) husband (49M) is an Emirati citizen.

We met while he was doing business in America and married in Los Angeles, where our marital home is.

He handled most of the finances during the marriage and I know he has a lot tied up in LLCs and other bank accounts. Most of our money in terms of investments he invested into companies in his home country, including the one that his parents own.

Things started getting really bad in 2020 when he said he felt suffocated by our kids (5F, 3F, and 1F). I also suspected he was having an affair with a 23 year old woman because of some Facebook messages I saw.

He punched a wall when he heard that I was pregnant with our daughter and when I tried to access financial documents he tore them up in front of me. I have suspected for a long time that he is bipolar but his family has a stigma against mental illness and he refuses to get tested. I had given him an ultimatum that if he didn't get help for his anger issues I was looking into a divorce.

He told me before the holidays that he had to go back to Dubai to do business like he used to do and it could not be done virtually. He told me that he would be back in three weeks.

The day after he left I found out that all our joint bank accounts were closed and he also hadn't paid any of the credit card bills.

I tried contacting him in any way I could and in a phone call he said to calm down and that he's not trying to divorce me but that I could be the most annoying person ever and all I ever did was keep him from doing what he really wanted. I also found out he had sold off some of our antiques we had owned.

That was almost a month ago and he refuses to come back and his parents have also stopped responding to my attempts to contact him.

I have been selling off a lot of things but I know I can't keep up with the mortgage or find a job that sufficiently supports the kids.

What do I do? If I file for divorce do I have to personally serve him?

Unrecognized transaction on my mom’s Mastercard credit card, she is in ICU. What can I do?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST

Hello everyone, I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me on this matter. I'm really lost on what to do or how to proceed.

I'm from Argentina and my mom's battling a severe case of COVID-19. A day before she was admitted to ICU she told my dad to look after any payments done with his and her cards and try to reduce consumption or stop some payments. That's when we discovered that on one of her credit cards, the one from Mastercard, there were some installments of 12 monthly payments being charged from the 5 month already from some unknown to us source. So we looked it up on google and it came out it was some kind of fraud and other people were reporting the same issue to VISA and making claims about an unrecognized transaction. They eventually 'won' the claim and got their money back.

So, here's our specific issue.. my dad tried doing the same and called Mastercard costumer service to make the claim and to find out what was that product or service that was being paid in 12 monthly installments that was so expensive, but as you could expect, the employee told him that she wasn't allowed to share that information with him or give any kind of details. She said that only the owner of the credit card can make that claim, but how? We told her if she ever recover from her illness she won't be able to talk for some time due to her having a tracheostomy done nor going personally the bank to make the claim.

I know my dad's not the best making claims and obtaining any benefit or 'win' from them, so this time I'll make the claim myself but I don't know what should I do?

Employer in Michigan says my sick accrual hours come out of my vacation pay. Is this right?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST

I was out one day and asked that 8 of my sick accrual hours be applied for that day. They said okay but warned me that money comes from my vacation pay, so my vacation pay will be 8 hours less.

Is this how sick accrual works in Michigan?
