How on earth do you access enough capital?!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:48 PM PST

I don't know if this is a real question, or just a rant.

My wife and I are in the hospitality space in a small, quiet, touristy destination. There's a Bed & Breakfast up for sale that has been owned by the same couple for generations. We worked there in high school, and fell in love with each other and the inn. That was 20 years ago. We ran the numbers, and if we bought it, we could make a nice living for ourselves and our kids while working it. We wouldn't get rich, but we could do what we love and treat people to our little slice of paradise.

However, the price is $1.7M. We have no debt and strong income from my desk job and our hospitality business. But we don't have $340K in cash just sitting around, waiting to be deployed on a business (or $425K, which is the 25% that everyone says we should have). At this rate, we can't buy it or something like it until we're old and our kids are gone.

So, I just know that some outside investor is going to buy it, hire a big property management company to control it, and then want to hire my wife and I to do the day-to-day operations and pay us starvation wages.

It just bums me out, man. The banker was like "Well, just start saving!" and I wanted to punch him in the face. Maybe y'all are better at having nearly a half a million dollars just sitting around "just in case" the right opportunity comes, but...not us.

    Handyman: Busy to Dead!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:58 AM PST

Started my Handyman business 4 months ago. Started as a "side gig" but was so busy went full time.

I'm LLC, insured, registered, EIN, just waiting for license to come back from the state.

Was crazy busy, 5 days a week, 40-50 hours a week, making great money. Most of my business was on referrals and I haven't advertised yet (bc I don't have a license so a little skeptical)

Then All of sudden nothing. Literally not one call. Is anyone else running into this problem? Any good ways to spread the word without officially advertising? I'm super depressed and anxious. Any help would be great!

Edit: Was a long time lurker and finally posted and glad I did. I appreciate everyone's feedback and great input tremendously.

    Accepting online payments

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:58 AM PST

Anyone know how I can accept payments online, I can't do it through my website as it doesn't have my currency (€).

I was thinking of some platform where customers can submit their card details and we process the payment from POS?

Multi-Member LLC. Signed Letter of Intent, no Operating Agreement. Business went South. No product. No launch. What can I do for my annual due diligence in taxes and compliance?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:01 PM PST

Business Partners and I have a Multi-Member LLC splitting 50/50 in the Wellness Industry 2019 incorporating in California straight out of college.

    Letter of Intent was signed.

Operating Agreement is incomplete and business just went South.

    No formal dissolution process since.

Broken team. No product. A mess.

I went through a phase of depression trying to find an answer on how to solve this problem with performing my due diligence on anything renewal related - Annual Taxes, Business Licensing, EIN, etc with all this legal jargon and technicality in opening-up shop as my step forward to the 'American Dream', but I overlooked and overshot my expectations way too high.

What can I do to get this off my plate?

    Pinterest for business promotions

Do you utilise Pinterest for business?

I'd like to so I'm wondering if anyone from a sustainable/eco/ethical brand would like to join a group board with me. The more the merrier, group boards are a great way to attract a following - I have a blog, last year I had about 5,000 blog views directed from Pinterest and I wasn't even active from august onwards

If you're a bit stuck on Pinterest anything to do with it I'd be happy to chat. You can always message me x Amy x

Can I create multiple LLC's using the same name? All with the same domain/social media?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:59 PM PST

Let's say my stage name is Johnny Appleseed. And I want to make multiple businesses using the Johnny Appleseed name. For instance:

Johnny Appleseed Productions LLC - An LLC for my videography content; for weddings, real estate, corporate, commercials, etc.

Johnny Appleseed YouTube LLC - An LLC for all of my YouTube/Patreon content

Johnny Appleseed Music LLC - An LLC for all my music content

First of all, can I make multiple LLC's like this that all use the JA name or do I need to differentiate them more?

Do I open up more risk to all three LLC's if I'm operating all three businesses under the same URL/domain or social media handle? Like, if I were to make a JohnnyAppleseed dot com or social media with @ Johnny Appleseed but included content from all three LLC's, are the other two LLC's protected if someone were to take legal action against content from one of the LLC's?

Should I even bother making separate LLC's? Everything I've read tells me its best to keep everything separate just in case.

Advice: Joining air force vs. Starting my own business

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:30 PM PST

PLEASE NOTE: This question is essentially if taking the risk of starting a small business is worth missing out on more income at a career with less potential for increase of income. The information below is for more background on myself, and how the question applies to my specific situation. If you don't feel like reading a book today, feel free to skip my question. Just looking for guidance from people who might have a little more insight than me.

A little background, I'm 18 years old. Currently I work at a call center making 10 an hour. roughly 20k a year. Me and my girlfriend live together and both work at this same job. I've been talking to a recruiter about joining the air force for a while now and am finally in the home stretch (Just need my ASVAB, MEPS, and to pick an MOS). I could probably be sent off to boot camp by the summer. Once I join the air force I would be making about 25k salary while in boot camp, but 48k when I'm out (This is because of how the air force's housing allowance works)

Joining the air force would basically be over double my current income, but I'd be locked in to whatever that minimum contract is (I think its 4 years but I may be wrong). I'm trying to find out if its smart to start up a mobile detailing service now (obviously after a good amount of saving), or join the air force and start it afterwards. I know if I'm conservative, $3000 would be more than enough for my business license, business insurance, and all the supplies and equipment I need. I already have a truck (bought it for 500 bucks about 3 months ago, so reliability may be questionable. From what I can tell it just needs a new belt, it's got a small oil leak, and it could use some new coolant. These are all things I know how to do myself so I'm not too worried about her breaking down on me. but just thought I'd mention this)

Here's a break down of our current situation:

Our monthly income: 2500 (If I joined the air force, this number would be about 4000 since my gf would have to quit her job when we move)

Our monthly expenses: 1700 (this is likely to change as our current rent is 650 for a small room, when we move we would likely opt in for a studio apartment about 800. new expenses would be closer to 1850, maybe 2000 if you wanna tack on a little wiggle room)

Current debt: 1000 (at our current rate we can have this paid off in 2 months)

I know I can make back my 3000 if I put in the work. Taking into account business being slow at the beginning, I can make back my money within 2 months at most. The thing is 3000 is a huge chunk of change for us, but once the ball gets rolling I would at least be able to make 15k within my first year. But this is something that will continue to grow as I work with it. I estimate around 30k if everything roles smoothly for my second year. If I really push to reach reach my goals I could be making 50k by my third year.

Of course I'm no business expert. I'm just a guy with a passion for detailing, and an itch to start my own business some day. I know I was made for better things, I just don't want to look back and regret not following my passion. But maybe I'm letting my emotions control me. I guess I'm just afraid of locking into the air force for 4 years, finding out I have a kid on the way, and not having another opportunity. What are you guy's opinions. Be brutally honest, this isn't just my life, I have my girlfriend to take care of as well.

Small business just starting up in window film installation.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:13 PM PST

I've been doing window film installations like frosting and tinting on the side of my main job and I've just recently started to get regular work. I've got a website and some advertising sorted but most of my work has come from word of mouth. My last installation was at a resort with guests passing by as I was doing my work. It had me thinking I should probably look into insurances and some legal things to cover myself for anything that may happen.

So I live in Queensland, Australia. I have an ABN already but I'm unsure of what I'll need to set myself up.. I would really appreciate some help if anyone in this sub knows of some recources I can follow.

How do you handle potential copywrite infringement?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:22 PM PST

I'm looking into starting a business. (Pins, Stickers, Art). I see a lot of artists doing renderings of already existing characters from video games and movies. How do you not get in trouble for copyright infringement? Do you have to get permission before creating art designed after a pre existing character?

Buying a IT / Computer service business

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:03 PM PST

I run and IT services business that I started myself fifteen years ago providing IT services to small business . I was a one men show and have grown to add techs now . The growth has been slow since mostly came with word of mouth. Most customers pay a fee that covers all their IT needs. I am looking to buy another business like the one I am running to grow / add more clients. In our line of business, we don't have much assets . I am more or so buying the other owner's customers which are mostly yearly contracts with monthly payments . The monthly payments depend on the size of the customer. So, if the business has more computer/people then the client pays more. The business that I am looking into buying is one men show. He started like I, but does not have any employees. He has been in business for 10 years and has about 10K monthly reoccurring revenue from service agreement and about another 4K for project pay that is not contract based that goes up and down . His total yearly revenue was 200k and he net 120k last year. He has some hardware sells which has very little profit . What I am most interested in is the monthly service agreement since that's under contract and most of that is profit .

He is asking 200k for the business .

My problem is that he is a one men show and his relationships with the customers matter. He has offered to stay around around for a few months or more and announce a merger.

I think 200k is too much money . I am really buying accounts. What do you think it's worth it. Would I be fare to offer 30-50K upfront and two years of 50/50 profits for all his clients . I was hoping to get some suggestion from you in a creative offer. I guess I am not sure how others are doing this.

I don't want to rip him off because I have been through the same of building a similar business which has not been easy, but at the same time I don't want to get into a bad business deal. I have not verified anything yet but was told that most of the 10k is at least under contract for another year.

    Looking forward to your suggestion.

504 Commercial Real Estate Loan or other options for home based growing business?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:48 PM PST

So, this might be way out there, but I had have some weird questions.

I live a little more east in a "country" style area of California. (San Diego)

I own a small printing business that's growing quickly. I started it in my home, which is a rental. I outgrew it within 6 months, and luckily my neighbors were moving out and my landlord allowed me to move my business into the studio home for a small price. Both homes are at the same address, so technically I'm still a home business.

I'm already starting to realize my business is going to out grow that very quickly, but I REALLY don't want the expense of a commercial rental. I've done that before and it was $3000-4000/month plus all the expenditures of having an off site business. Meanwhile, my wife is pregnant with twins and we're outgrowing our own home rental.

My end goal is to really try to purchase a home here that has a large detached workshop on the property. There are a ton of homes here that have this available because of the farming, etc.

The downside is the cost of a property with a workshop plus a home is higher than just a smaller home alone. But we're talking maybe 100k-150k more. The savings of having the two together vs a home + a commercial rental are HUGE in SO many ways.

Are there any resources available to me to look into for the years to come for this? Can the company use a loan like a 504 business loan, purchase a property with the intention of building a business and "renting" the house on the property to ourselves as the tenants?

I'm just thinking outside the box here! Bear with me.

Which banks are the best for opening a checking account for LLC that can be multi-managed AND be applied online?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:15 PM PST

Hi! My friend and I are starting an LLC partnership. We are looking for a reliable bank to open a checking account that can be multi-managed and be applied online.

Worst case scenario, I will have to travel 4 hours across state to a Chase bank to open the account. And my friend will have to travel 2 hours, as we are from different cities, same state. I don't really want to travel as Covid is still rising in the U.S., but if there are no better options, traveling will have to do.

Are there any banks that fulfill those our criteria? Does Mercury work, and how is it? I heard Novo and Azlo aren't as good. Thank you in advance!

Starting a Title Insurance Company in Texas

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:47 AM PST

    Good afternoon,

Looking for advice, help, guidance and things to watch out for when starting up a new title insurance company. The company i have worked for has been around for over 100 years and is extremely old school in everything that we do. They trained and taught me how to become an Escrow officer/closer but i do not have alot of knowledge in other parts of the company.

Im looking to start a new Title Insurance company that is both state of the art and professional. Has anyone had success in starting their own title company? If so, what advice would you give and what would you prioritize? We are working on getting a title plant and hope to have that locked in today or tomorrow!

    EIN HELP!!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:24 PM PST

Hi - I created an LLC earlier this year and obtained an EIN. I did the whole thing, but didn't have a chance to print the EIN letter at the end (but did write down the number).

I ended up closing on a property and bought it under the LLC. Now I want to open up a bank account and need that stupid letter that I didn't get the print.

I've been calling the IRS for DAYS and CAN NOT get through to get a copy of the letter. What's worse is the bank is trying to accommodate and had their security/risk team run my EIN against the business name and it is not coming up as a match. This made me VERY scared and anxious.

How can I get a copy of the EIN letter if the IRS is not taking calls regarding the topic right now - and wtf why wouldn't the EIN match up against the LLC??????
