    WFH nightmare

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:02 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm sure everyone has experienced this..... B4, been working from home for almost a year now..

I was on a call today with my team, and thought I had muted my mic. I shouted across the house to my wife, "hey can I get some fucking gabagool?" I looked down at the computer to see everyone white as a ghost. The female partner's mouth was open like she saw a murder. I profusely apologized, but the team call was super tense afterwards and ended 15 minutes earlier than scheduled.

Should I reach out to team members and apologize? How should I approach this, I'm worried it's going to damage my career.

When the media talks tax law: "...a tax law quirk"

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:07 AM PST

I highly recommend you don’t do this

    All too familiar...

LPT: Do the math. If you make $60k a yr. at a job that forces you to work 80 hrs a week ( game devlprs?) You are only making about $15/hr. That is nearly minimum wage in many places. Get a different job and reclaim your own time.

As I sit here and read an internship acceptance speech on LinkedIn in which she *tagged multiple partners in the post* and jerked them off publicly about how they “lead by example and embrace growth,” I am inspired to ask you good people a few questions before I start my internship next week....

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:39 AM PST

    1. What strategies can you enlighten me on to not be too slow on projects, but also not be too fast? I want to do the work well and be a high performer, but I also want to take long shits and chill out here and there if I want. I mean, come on, it's WFH.

    2. When it comes to billables, should I pretty much refuse to eat hours? I'm not sure how this works from an internship perspective.

    3. Should I volunteer for projects? I know I shouldn't be volunteering for everything, but I do want to be seen as a top performer.

    4. I want this internship to become a FT offer, but I don't want to be taken advantage of in the future if I accept. What are your general strategies on advocating for yourself so you don't become the drone who says "bro, that's nothing! I put up 100 hours 2 months in a row!!!" I do not glorify overworking yourself, I think it's not a badge of honor, but rather a badge of pointless servitude.

Thanks in advance for any replies I may get. I'm not nervous for the internship, but I do want some tips on navigating unfamiliar territory so that I may be seen as a top performer without being a brown-nosing try hard who tags partners in LinkedIn posts. Sorry if I don't respond quickly, I'm driving an hour away to take a CLEP exam today.

    Feel like I’m drowning - need advice/encouragement

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 04:31 PM PST

Background: been working in B4 for about 1.5 years now and my overall mentality has taken a big hit over the past few months in particular. Coming in, I made a pact with myself that I would at least stay until Senior and that my ceiling would be doing maybe a year as Manager.

Welp, now I'm pretty much set on my ceiling being 1 year as Senior (up for Senior this August, so leaving in spring/summer of 2022) and even that feels like a stretch. Seeing other exit stories has only made the thought of leaving grow more and more but I simply have to at least push through until that promotion. At this point, I just don't see how I'm here for another year+, and I think it's more likely than not that I dip in the fall.

To make matters worse, I've been placed into an absolute shitshow for busy season. I'm on a brand new client that already has a bad rep for messiness and unresponsiveness, as well as being on a team with a senior that people wonder how they still work here and a manager that hasn't actually done this type of work in a few years. Feel like I'm being tossed to the wolves.

Does anyone have any advice or words of encouragement? Or perhaps an outlook on the job market over the next year? Not sure if it's just the initial post-holiday blues or what but I feel like I'm about to begin the longest 7-8 months of my life and the next few months in particular are going to only seal the deal for me to leave sooner rather than later.

Audit Senior trying to get out before busy season

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:58 PM PST

I'm trying to leave my firm in January/pre-busy season, but am wondering what the repercussions could be. I've been trying to leave for a while (since after last busy season really) but haven't hit any traction until recently, just wondering if it's frowned upon and if anyone has any stories of people who left around mid-January? Thanks

    Hiring Process Question

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:10 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

So I finished my final interview two weeks ago for an internship position.

I did some more research on the firm and the partner and found articles the partner wrote. Is it dumb for me to still ask some more questions at this point? The recruiter said I will know this week if I get an offer or not. But I have some genuine questions I would like to ask.

Anyone else struggling to get back in the swing of things?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 03:06 PM PST

My seniors and manager are on vacation until Thursday, or aren't assigned on the client for the next couple weeks. The off-shore team is asking for work to do but I don't know what to give them to do. They're about to drop hours from our engagement and I'm worried the manager will be pissed. I know the senior would have work for them to do.. I just have no idea what that would be

I don't want to reach out to the client to ask for PBCs. I'm assuming that would waste their time, as they barely have closed the books. I don't even know what else I should or could ask of them

I'm a bit aimless on what I should be doing and my anxiety is building, being this directionless. Am I dropping the ball? Client files at the beginning of March.

Industry job isn’t what I expected - anyone have similar experiences?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:45 PM PST

I left big 4 to join as an SFA in the FP&A department. While I was excited to leave the auditing/Financial reporting role, a lot of my responsibilities in this position entail following a set of procedures to help produce reports while copying and pasting data as necessary from various sources. I feel as though I'm not learning much and that anyone would be capable of doing my job.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? Is this a normal feeling?

    Intermediate ACCTG 2 Advice/Study tips?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST

Hello everyone! I didn't do too hot on my Intermediate 1 midterm and final, the only thing that kept me from failing completely were small quizzes/team projects.

This quarter, our grades are more concentrated on the exams. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or study tips that might help? We use the Spiceland textbook btw.

I plan on watching Farhat to supplement my lectures as of now and ofc doing practice problems.

So Stressed - Don't know what to do :(

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:25 AM PST

26(M) years old working at a small firm as an accounting manager. Honestly my workload is not that much but the clients I get are messy and new clients the firm gets that go to me are also mostly messy. I don't know how to handle these types of clients so I then tend to avoid dealing with it which only amps up the stress and anxiety. I've only been here since August but I feel like crying.

I also find myself getting more and more down about the reality that I'll be working for the next 30-40 years doing the same thing year after year.

I'm newly married and have a kid on the way and honestly everything but work is awesome. Time off for Christmas/New Year never lasts long enough and I love life when I can be on my own schedule spending time with my wife, playing games, and hanging out with friends/family.

I don't know what to do but I feel like I need to do something otherwise I'm not sure how long I'm going to last. Any advice would be appreciated.. :(

    Accounting careers

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:01 PM PST

Long story short: started my career in asset management and pivoted towards accounting since I liked the topic and it's the language of business, got MAcc, became a CPA, did the big 4 audit thing and then landed a job another job at an investment manager (dollar signs in the eyes got the best of me). Unfortunately, this job doesn't involved accounting/excel/numbers and I didn't realize how much I would miss it. I just started this job and it's just a mismatch and I'm miserable (no the money doesn't help like I thought it would)

I'm thinking of looking into financial analysis or financial due diligence. Can anyone offer insight on either role? I thought FDD was what I always wanted to do but now I don't know what I want! I want to work with numbers, projections, forecasts, accounting... just not so much reading...also wanna step away from asset management even though that's where money is!

[recent graduate] Can someone please tell me why my resume fucking sucks? Please and thank you.

So I've been studying for the CPA exam and for the past 3 nights I've woken up in the middle of the night while doing a problem. I woke up literally in the middle of a Dollar Value LIFO problem today. How do I sleep like normal again?

Do you actually learn a lot about accounting at public accounting (audit)?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:58 PM PST

Hi do you learn a lot about technical accounting in public? I've started for about a few months and I feel my tasks have been more administrative, data entries and documentation related rather than actual accounting knowledge. I've taken and passed the CPA and nome of that knowledge was really applied.

Aspiring Accountant: What’s Your Take on WGU’s Online Accounting Program

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:41 PM PST

    Good evening all,

I've posted here a few times, congratulating a few people, and asking for feedback as an aspiring accountant and you guys have been great with your feedback. I come to you folks again for more feedback.

I thought I had a plan for going back to school. I'm 31, working in retail management. I live in TN and community college is almost free or very low-cost to me and I wanted to take advantage of that. My educational path was going to be: community college for an A.A.S in accounting and then university to complete my degree at the bachelors level. My thinking was I'd have the educational needs met once I graduated from community college (degree in hand) and i could apply for different finance jobs like bookkeeping and whatnot with more confidence. But I'm second guessing my plan.

I came across Western Governors University and they offer a B.S in Business / accounting exclusively online. I've read a few things on here from former students and I get the idea that it's really up you to grasp the material on your own and make what you can of it and that's fine, I've bought courses on Udemy for QuickBooks and Accounting and I feel I'll be okay on my own like that.

But my concern is: is this a legit school that can help me become an accountant or is this a diploma mill school similar to IT Tech (for those of you that remember that school)? No other university seems to offer accounting online so I am raising an eyebrow at WGU.

    Thanks.
