Guilty for not working this week

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 07:58 PM PST

Does anyone else feel really bad when you waste time? I had a SUPER light week this week and I literally just took naps during the day, was on reddit, etc. I "reached out" to some managers but didn't press hard enough. The work I did have—I did it super slowly. With the DC situation, post holiday blues, general pandemic dread...it was hard to get back into working.

But now I feel superrrr guilty. Can anyone relate? Sorry for the rant, I'm literally just venting

What are the most "type A" behaviors you have ever seen demonstrated by your seniors or managers?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST

When I was a staff 1, my manager got on my ass multiple times for the following things:
    • Writing "Hi John," rather than the more professional "Hello John," in a quick email message to the client. We had a good relationship with the client, and addressing them so formally felt forced imo.

    • I requested a quick informal meeting with the client (to ask some clarifying questions) at 10:45 AM. The seniors tweaked out over it and said it was weird that I was setting meetings 15 minutes before or after the hour. Only 10:30 or 11 were acceptable meeting times in this situation.

    • Not saving a workbook with my cursor in cell A1 before closing it. I kind of understand the general benefit of this one, but the cursor was in cell D3 or something close. Not something like cell Z184.

To be clear, I absolutely judge you if you do any of these things! I'll probably get a bunch of replies with people backing up the above points, but honestly, who cares? Everything here is so trivial. Is it really worth nitpicking someone over? What other things have you guys experienced?

Is anyone at the top 10 firms hearing suggestions to work in the office?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST

At a big 4 and a partner has suggested our team works in the office 2-3 days a week during busy season. Firm guidance still has a policy of working remotely, but I'm wondering what the general response would be to a partners deviation from policy. I don't want to return to the office quite yet, and in fact I didn't even renew my lease since rent was increasing while my comp didn't. Thoughts?

    Rejection of efficiency

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:17 AM PST

I'm an accountant working in public accounting. My entire life I have walked the line between lazy or efficient seeking the best way to complete a task with the least amount of work. Walking into my office is like taking an elevator to the past. They do not know how to use any technology and they are not problem solvers. They are just not creative enough and would rather just do things the long way. My question is, why when show or tell them an easier way to do things do they just completely reject the efficiency and are personally offended? Not just management, My coworker friends reject easier processes and will not even adopt OCR in adobe. My co worker would rather print out a 100 page pdf saved as an image and go through it line by line rather than email it to me so I can use my OCR feature in PDF. (Yes, I pay for it myself) She's 22!!!!! I want to know why. Why do people act this way? I dont need advice on how to deal. I am fine, I just want to know why? (it occurred to me while I was searching for why that not asking why is probably a factor) My theories: do not believe me? like mindless work? lazy? jealous? fragile ego? not self aware? please tell me what you think.

I have a question about becoming an accountant

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:45 PM PST

So I'm currently in high school, I quite like math, and I don't really mind working in an office.

I'm interested in becoming a financial accountant, and I was wondering how I actually do that. This quest might sound dumb at first but hear me out.

When I go to university, is there a specific course for financial accounting? Or am I trained in that field by whatever company I end up working for.

This may sound confusing (sorry if it is) but I just need someone to explain the process to me.

Would anyone be interested in excel pro formas?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:22 PM PST

I've prepared pro formas for all my exams this year (ICAEW Professional). These include all the common adjustments in them. For example, consolidated statements and tax computations. If anyone is interested I can share them. I know I much preferred having them in one place over looking through the books. Wish me luck, I have 4 exams next week.

How Long Does it take to write a client email

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:16 AM PST

How long does it take y'all to write an email to a client? As an A1, I feel like it takes me forever to write out in a professional and succinct email to a client.

Looking for Advice - Leaving Public Tax

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

People who have worked in public accounting on the tax side, what are some typical positions you have moved to when leaving public, or have seen others go to? When I make the jump I'd like to have a starting place in my search.

Looking more for roles/types of jobs rather than specific companies. Thanks!

Interview at Google - looking for insight or advice!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:42 AM PST

I found out on Wednesday. I was not expecting to hear back from them so I am equal parts and excited and nervous! I've spent last 2 days scouring the internet and subreddit looking for information on interviews for roles that are more operational rather than technical. There is an abundance of info out there for technical interviews for coding, engineers, software development, etc., but hardly anything for accounting/finance/operations. I'm not 100% confident which role the interview is for, but I applied for two that were essentially the same role, only one was a senior level and one was staff. Has anyone made it through the process or have any insight for what to expect? Outside the usual "give an example" questions? Or any resources that might be helpful? Thanks so much in advance :)

Edit: I don't mean advice about interviews in general - I've done my fair share of those. I just meant Google-specific since they are known for a very long, multi-step process.

Did reporting sexual harassment cause me to lose my full time offer?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:45 PM PST

Edit 2: I will be removing specific details from this post as someone from my country has posted this on Instagram which resulted in people identifying the firm and my identity (don't wish to be sued...)

I intern-ed at a Big 4 (audit) in 2020. A senior (year 3) sexually harrassed me and I was discouraged by my manager from reporting this to HR.

Eventually, I reported it a while later and after investigations were concluded, he was let off with only a warning and was even promoted.

The manager that discouraged me from reporting contacted me and berated me for reporting it, saying it caused a fuss with the paperwork and the entire team had to go through numerous investigations because of me. She hinted at the end of the call this might affect my full time prospects (interns at the firm normally get a full time offer after completing internships) and true enough, I got the email a week later that I didn't get the ft offer.

So yeah, do you think I lost the full time offer because I reported? Will it affect my applications for the other big 4s if they happen to ask why I didnt get the full time offer ? :/

Is there a problem a tracker can't solve?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:00 AM PST

I work in big four audit. Why does it seem like folks here love trackers? Every time we need to do something, we make a tracker for it. Need to follow up with a client? Make a tracker.

While it's useful for bigger tasks, I find I waste time building trackers for my managers instead of simply sending an email with three bullet points...

So what's the deal with all those trackers and what do you think of them? Am I the only one who sees them as having a cost (time) instead of only a benefit?
