Here's some copywriting advice: why the photos matter more than the pixels. Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:41 AM PST There's a little known company called Apple who do a great job of showing us why benefits always trump features. How do they show off the camera on their newest phone? Do they bang on about the number of pixels it has? Do they boast about the width of the lens? Do they tell us anything about the camera at all? Nope, nope and nope. Do you know how many pixels your iPhone's camera has? Of course you don't. That's because Apple know you don't really care about those things. Those are features. You care about taking great pics (it's all about the gram, after all). So all Apple need to do is show you the photos their camera can take. After all, that's the point in having all of those pixels - to take great photos. Great photos are the benefit of the camera's features. You can apply this to any product. Which car would you rather buy? Car 1: This car is fitted with the latest airbag technology Car 2: This car is 79% more likely to save your life in a crash Talk about the benefits and let the features speak for themselves. Your headlines will be instantly more compelling for it. ** Edit: btw guys, if anyone is interested, I've just relaunched my copywriting newsletter (this post was actually taken from it). It's cost-free, spam-free and I've never tried to sell to any of my subscribers. You'll get a welcome email, an email tomorrow and then 1 email a week thereafter. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2021 03:35 AM PST Hey all. Coming up from a deep dive into the science around how people change, and wanted to share some thoughts. We can start a company as we are, but shepherding that company as it grows up requires us to grow up, too. But we usually don't like it. How leaders grow into who they want to beThe path of leadership is one of change. Of growth. That's why I love the work of coaching so much. I get to accompany incredibly talented and driven people on the journey through the wilderness and mess between who they are, and who they want to become. Most leaders, they think that this is a thinking exercise. That change is simply a matter of deciding what we want and then systematically working toward it. As comforting as it is to think of ourselves as these incredibly logical, empirically efficient creatures (particularly as we make decisions with millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs in the balance), unfortunately that's simply not the case. Reams of neuropsychological research (here's a decent summary out of Harvard and Carnegie-Mellon) indicates that people, even the most calculating leaders, make decisions emotionally and then rationalize that decision with logic. In other words, what we now know empirically is that the work of our conscious mind is to rationalize, not to be rational. And so it is with change. It's not enough to logically understand the benefit of change — we must also reach the same conclusion emotionally. This is relatively straightforward. When change happens, it's because changing feels better than staying the same. Simple as that. And then afterward we come up with logical reasons in support of the change. Simple yes. But this is an incredibly high bar. We're evolutionarily wired to prefer the status quo because no matter how bad it is, we know we will live through it. We can of course take steps to make changing feel better — visualization, the law of attraction, etc — but overcoming our evolutionary bias against change is often too difficult, and we end up frustrated despite our at times herculean efforts. When change does finally happen, it's most often the result of pain. Whether that's the physical pain of touching a hot stove, or the emotional pain of having our work rejected by a customer or investor, we change most effectively and reliably when staying the same hurts too bad. "We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to."- C.S. Lewis Great. Pain drives change. Pain still sucks. So what?Understanding this, we can take an active (although unpleasant) role in our own transformation. The reason that so many leaders evolve slower than they'd like, is that humans don't like pain. So when the pain comes we look away, numbing ourselves to the very catalyst to our transformation. We might ignore the pain of rejection by quickly jumping to the next task, or distract ourselves from the pain of an unworkable co-founder relationship with TV or food. We might just shove the feeling down in the name of "compartmentalizing." And in so doing we stay comfortable, and stuck, robbing ourselves of the transformation we say we want. We don't evolve, not because it's actually comfortable where we are, but because we aren't willing to face the actual pain of our situation. To feel it, unmitigated, without reflexively looking away. It's normal to avoid pain. It's part of the evolutionary wiring that lead to us being here to talk about it. Pain sucks, and it makes sense to avoid it in most circumstances. But if you're trying to change, to grow, as so many leaders are, the specific pain caused by your current situation can also be an incredible catalyst for change. If you welcome it. If you're playing to win, all of life is an obstacle. If you're playing to grow, all of life is an ally. Financial literacy and business books for budding entrepreneur Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:10 AM PST Hi everyone. I am trying to learn about the financial literacy every entrepreneur must have. I was listening to Kevin O'leary on Robert and Kim Kiyosaki's radio episode. Kevin said that on Shark Tank, he would not invest in an individual's idea if they don't know what financial statements are. I am from engineering background but I have always liked learning about finance and business. Please help me find books to learn about finance and business management for entrepreneurs. I am currently reading The Lean Startup. If not books, anything that teaches you about business strategy or just any ideas that can help a beginner. Thank you 🙏 [link] [comments] |

Business structure for low salary? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST I'd like to find some info on a business structure where I can run a small business inside it (incl. investments), pay myself a modest salary, and accumulate gains over time inside the business. (Too long a story to explain why. I just have to keep a modest income for personal financial/health reasons.) Looking for 100% legal. Nothing shady. And not concerned about minimizing taxes, just having the right structure to keep my personal income modest for now. I know it's out there. Rich folks build such structures all the time. I just need mine to keep my take-home low for a while. Can someone point me somewhere? I have googled for weeks on this. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:31 AM PST Hi there! I rarely post on Reddit, I usually read a lot. I would need some advice, I am Italian, and many of my friends due to the coronavirus crisis have lost their jobs. I would like to help one of them in particular who knows how to do woodwork, performs excellent work, and currently specializes in the manufacture of cigar cases. I would like to create an online business by selling his work, but I don't see much business for cigar cases. I would like to create an online business (e-commerce) by selling his work, but I don't see much business for cigar cases. I see many difficulties in terms of marketing (I would have great problems creating ads because cigarettes are banned). There are also other works that he can do, mountable lamps, kitchen accessories, etc. I would like to ask you if you have any ideas for some kind of wooden product that you think could have a lot of space in online e-commerce. Sharing your experience would also be very interesting. Thank you all. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:03 AM PST I am residing in California and currently use a virtual mailbox (shipping center) address as my business address. The business address is located in a different city from my actual home address. I get this error message when applying for the business license within that city: "The business address you have provided shows to be a UPS store mailbox, we cannot use a ups store, po box per State of California business & professions Code- Section 17538.5. If you have another valid physical business address we will then be able to move forward in updating the business address." To clarify, I do NOT have a UPS store mailbox. The shipping center is a locally-owned business operating for many years. Either way, I'm not sure if the distinction matters and I cannot use a shipping center in general. After all this, I am wondering if it's even necessary at this time to register for a city business address as I will only operate selling fully online on my own website. I was able to register for my federal EIN and seller's permit with the virtual address just fine with no issues. I don't want to have to deal with the city if they won't accept that virtual address and I don't think it makes sense the use my home address as my EIN and seller's permit will be in different cities. I hope I'm not too confusing. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:01 AM PST Like many people, prior to getting into e-commerce I was extremely cynical about the nature of influencers. But like them or hate them they're clearly effective. I feel like I'd have an easy time choosing the influencers in my niche. I'm seeking suggestions in getting them on board. I'm not at a point in my business where I can afford more than a 100 dollars in actual payments, so the straightforward method is out of reach. I'd gladly send some influencers my products for free, I just need help contacting them (en masse) and piquing their interest. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
How do I get my life on track? Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:56 AM PST Help! I'm stuck in a place in my life where I am unable to advance my career and I'm also not making any significant progress with my entrepreneurial ventures. I'm very smart with a great resume but I've always hated my jobs and spend so much time at work thinking about building a company. Because I need to make a living, I take jobs that match my background but which I don't enjoy, inevitably hate them, quit to work on building a company and the the company fails. Then I have to get a new job to replenish my accounts. This has happened on 3 separate occasions and I just turned 30 so I can't keep living this kind of life anymore! I want to break the cycle and sort out my life. The gaps on my resume keeps me from truly advancing to more senior roles. Recently, I tried to raise capital for my new startup and that didn't go well so I am back to interviewing for a new job because I need the money. My current plan was to get a senior role and leave entrepreneurship behind for good as I feel like the pursuit just keeps ruining my life, but I applied and was offered a junior-level position because of the gaps on my resume. I feel like I have to take yet another relatively low paying job because I need the money. I am upset and disappointed because I am getting nowhere with both my jobs or with entrepreneurship. I don't know if I explained my situation well but I need advice on how to move forward with my life and career. I was not sure what subreddit to post this but I need some serious life advice from entrepreneurs who've been able to sort out their lives. [link] [comments] |

Question about FEAR as a person startup Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:09 PM PST Hey gang, first post here, been on the thread for a while. In my last business, I had the fortune of 2 great mentors that guided me in the same office space. Made some money after taxes and that's the only reason I'm lucky enough to try my own thing again during the pandemic. Lately, I've been having some mini fear attacks. (I think panic attack is too extreme). Little "challenges" that every business faces, it really gets to me like, I feel paralyzed and fearful of taking the next step. Has anyone experienced this before? How did you deal with it? One other note is that I'm in physical therapy after a car accident. I plan on a 100% recovery, but there are some days (25-30%) when I am in pain. Much better than 7 months ago when I was in pain 80% of the time. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
2 companies want to hire me for business dev/marketing/Growth, no idea on how much to charge. Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:10 AM PST Hi all, I own 2 small businesses and usually give business and marketing advices to people and companies around me "for fun", since I'm genuinely passioned about business and marketing and know a things or two. I'm just happy to help and curious about other businesses in general. But here's the thing: I've helped 2 companies these past few months do a better job and increase their revenues by helping them fix a few issues they had internally and giving them advices on sales strategy, marketing and SEO. Well, my advices weren't so bad apparently, because they both want me to work with them now as a marketing agency/growth hacker/whatever the term. --- Basically, my job would touch multiple fields: improve their SEO, PPC, sales strategy, and resolve some problems they have internally but really aren't aware of. To put it simply: I observe their companies and help them make more money via different technics. This can involve improving their SEO, doing market studies, managing their PPC, implementing a crm, (...) Sooooo... How much would you guys charge? And is there even a name for that kind of business? Because it isn't really a digital marketing agency and I think the term Growth Hacker has now become utter nonsense and bullshit. I don't really believe in charging hours as I think it's a conflict of interest, so maybe a share of their profits? For example, company A's estimated growth for this year is 3%, I take 10% of anything above these 3% + a retainer fee of 1,500$ /m ? Or maybe I offer 2 plans: Plan 1 is strategy only and costs xk$ which is basically a % of what I think they could make by applying it, Plan 2 is the same, but I'm the one executing the plan, so I charge a fewer fee for the plan itself but ask for a commission on profits. What do you guys think? ---- TLDR; People want me to improve their businesses and help them make more sales via PPC/SEO/Sales Strategy/BusinessDevelopment. How much do I charge? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:55 PM PST Hi guys, I'm a 23 year old grad. People generally describe me as very enterprising and entrepreneurial. I've worked as a teacher, a salesman, and a supervisor for a moving company, but I've wanted to start my own business for a while. However, for the life of me I can't come up with any ideas. Is there anything you guys would recommend? Ideally I'd like something that I could put together totally remotely. I'm not very tech savvy, and the only real decent skills I have are just soft people skills. I'm really at a loss and could go for some kind of inspiration. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:52 PM PST Today i talked to a guy who is jobless. And it got me thinking. He asked me info on how to get his game to work. But then later i was like... well should he get a job instead of gaming. Which led me to the question, how to make 1 dollar. Then i realized that I already made $2 from the stock market. And $30 dollar for a website change. And $170 from selling an option. And $7 dollar from adsense. ( i had the day off today) My idea was i bet you can go outside, ring a doorbell and ask, can i clean your driveway off snow for $1 and you probably succeed. Now i like to challenge you guys as well. How to make $1 dollar preferably repeatable. But doesn't have to. [link] [comments] |
How long did your previousburnout last until you recovered? Posted: 28 Jan 2021 02:32 PM PST Curious to see how long other people's burnout lasted until they were back on their feet? Just hit a slew of 4 days where I was completely tanked mentally and physically, and gradually got better over 4 days. With some research, I realized I was burnt out not depressed. The difference being that I was completely exhausted mentally and physically but not feeling sad, lack of self-worth, and etc. [link] [comments] |
