Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 05:05 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

For those who have sold your startup... what input can you provide? 4 year old business, apprised at value that would “set me up for life”, still have things I want to do, but also also fighting burn out. What are some things to consider? This is the most complex decision yet.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:59 PM PST

Appraised by multiple brokers in the mid 8 figures.

String revenue with good potential growth over next couple years.

Burn out is very strong from all aspects. The anxiety has grown extensively over last 3-6 months.

Excited for the industry and potential but burn out is just so big and toll on my mental state.

Can founding a startup or working at one help you figure out your personal strengths ?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:10 AM PST

    Dear Community,

I would love find out where my personal strengths and passions are, so I can do some investments in myself with high time-opportunity cost (e.g. a Master's Degree).

It has been suggested to me that working in a startup can help with this, because before a startup has many employees, one is likely to take on a variety of tasks. (Entrepreneurship is also one of the options I am strongly considering).

Taken aside the fact that every startup is different and it will depend on the ones I approach, would you say this can generally work, or is there a flaw in this plan ? Flaws could be that it's very rare to find such an opportunity, or that this method would not help me figure out what I am good at or passionate about.

Would you say your personal startup-time has had such an effect ?

Thank you in advance for any stories, input, two-cents and arguments.

If i can give back in any way, I'm a psychology student with some mental health and activism experience. Stay healthy and have a nice Christmas period/holidays.

Add. explanations: I would not need the startup to succeed, for me it would be "simulating startup" / playing startup.

Does name matter if you have a good product?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:05 AM PST

If you have a good product or service, does your business name really matter?

I am planning my company launch for January 1. My website is pretty much ready to go. The only problem is I can't seem to get a good name. I have been through about 3 or 4 at this point, and I am getting really frustrated. All of the good ones are taken or trademarked to hell.

For now I have settled on a random two word (not industry related) brand name that is ehhhhh..... ok not the worst but could be better. I have the .co domain and brandco on all social media profiles. I am honestly just thinking of running with it.

    Question for entrepreneurs

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:08 AM PST

Hi guys. Recently I was thinking about why so many entrepreneurs statistically fail in their first 5 years. I want to figure out what are the reasons for that. There are so many books and information about entrepreneurship and still, that is the case. I would love to hear your thoughts on, what are the biggest struggles entrepreneurs face that prevent them from achieving success?

How many start ups at the same time?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:03 AM PST

I'm a developer and I've built a ton of apps mostly for other people and personal projects.

I was thinking about doing this "spray and pray" sort of approach. Where I find problems people might have...and just build super simple apps/sites and which ones have more traction.

Does anyone have any experience doing something like this? I'm wonder what the pitfalls might be?

Main challenges of external fundraising for someone with only bootstrap experience?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:51 AM PST

A bit of context: I dropped out of architecture in 2011 and moved to Asia where I built and later sold a small bootstrapped food business. Since 2010 I've also been working on a bootstrapped online lifestyle business and it's currently generating 7 figure revenues with a combined input of around 20 hrs/week between my brother and me. So my background has always been with self-funded small businesses.

My family and I moved back to Vancouver in 2018 and I started working for a local HVAC company in sales. Long story short, I realized the industry was very antiquated. So in January 2020 some friends and I started our current startup to address the gap we are seeing.

I quit my job in August to work on this full time, launched the MVP on Sept 30 and have begun getting some revenue (not profit). Due to the nature of the business, we feel that external capital is required and have begun reaching out for a Pre-Seed round.

Does anyone have experience with a similar transition? What were your main challenges going from bootstrapped to funded? Along that vein, did your bootstrap experience give you an advantage?

    Partnering with universities

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 12:51 PM PST

Private startup, considering partnering with relevant universities near me to develop some new clean tech. How does that process typically work after making the connection? What are the financial obligations on either end? How is intellectual property preserved? Would I need my own documents (NDAs, partnership agreement, etc) going in? What sort of long term commitments or obligations will be expected of us?

How to finding my way to big leagues?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:34 AM PST

Im a Sr Engineer here in SF, I started my own ecomm and became entrepreneural mindset and have since been developing nothing but passive income businesses.

Sometimes I see people in news who for example create autonomous vehicles using lidar like Austin Russell who is 25 and has funding to create his dream.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/austin-russell-net-worth-luminar-ceo-billionaire-b1766574.html

I feel capable, I know it involves a lot of work and commitment but I was wondering, how does one go from wanting to be like that coming from a self taught self funded everything normal guy like myself?

I would like to be a respectable CEO for a real startup to join the contribution of high technology innovations somehow or someday.

    Truly appreciate any tips!

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 05:05 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

How do you bring value to a NEW business relationship?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:42 AM PST

    Imagine this scenario.

You just discovered a person online you wanted to talk to, and he agreed to hop on a Zoom call. How would you provide value to this person besides asking him only the things you need?

The only things I've come up with are referring him to someone he might benefit from or helping him with your expertise (for example, Web Development).

However, how to "suggest" this properly? How to better identify the help you can provide?

Usually, I would ask, "Do you need some help with X?", and people would just say "Thanks, I'll let you know if I need something."

I want to go beyond this, any tips on achieving this?

How should I go about marketing our product being a new company?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 08:12 AM PST

So we are a small two man operation. We have our prototype created and about to file for our patent. From there we're going to do a indigogo campaign for some funding. What is the best way to do some basic marketing for our company? We're using word of mouth with family and friends, but trying to get past that that layer of potential customers. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Where can I live in the USA to live very cheaply and work on a startup?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:02 AM PST

    Hi,

I am in NYC. I am paying not that much rent. I am working 4 days a week. I do not currently have any remote work. I am exploring leaving NYC to live somewhere cheaper. A change of pace would be good. It would be good if I could work less on income and more on my startup.

I do not have much in savings. I am resourceful. I would probably have to work locally. I am open to all ideas of living cheaply with the internet. My objective is to get away from working for income as much as I can so I can work more on my startup.
