Scammer spoofed my phone number and now I'm marked as a spam caller

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 06:37 PM PST

I received several angry voicemails from a random number yelling incoherently about me scamming them. I have never called this number.

What I have deduced from the caller is that the scammer has spoofed my number and is offering a service adjacent to my business with online payment, only to steal the money. I have not returned the call as they were angry beyond rationality.

Presumably the scammer called quite a few people while spoofing my phone number because some carriers identify my number as potential spam. I contacted my local police but they weren't helpful; the didn't even listen to voicemails.

My question- what can I do to reverse my phone number being marked as spam and/or how can I prevent this in the future without buying more/changing phone numbers?

Will your merchant account be flagged because the total customer number is small but the payment is high and recurring?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:43 PM PST

I'm starting my part-time private STEM tutor business, but the initial customers will be from my friends or friends of friends. The customer base would be small but they pay good money reliably. I'm thinking of 5 customers each paying around a thousand dollars per month.

I also plan to do it full time by designing a tailored curriculum for each student. I can cover both maths and physics materials up to college sophomore level, so the payment per month could be even higher.

How's the possibility of stripe/intuit freeze my fund, because the pattern is kind of similar to friends paying each other? I guess the best approach is to spread the risk by having merchant accounts on different platforms or just use check, but I figure a service intro webpage and a web payment portal look nicer.

IRA/401K to lower our AGI, I could use a recommendation.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:27 PM PST

I posted on personal finance but was recommended to ask here too.

My husband is a sole prop with a few part time employees (including me). Thanks to the tornado that was 2020, taking advantage of the programs we qualified for, a quick pivot and bounce back. We are now on track to be above 400% of poverty line with our combined income. Meaning we would loose our access to a marketplace plan (CA) and would loose the self-employed health insurance deduction.

So before the year is out we need to set up a IRA or a 401k, to lower our AGI by at least 15k. I could really use feedback and advice. This is very new territory for me and I have no older wiser person in my life to ask about this.

Solo 401k is out because we have PT employee's over 1000 hrs a year.

Background: We have a 6 months emergency fund, no debt, one car payment (0% interest), our rent is 40% bellow market. We will get a HSA qualified plan for 2021. Our medium term goal does include buying a modest house in the next few years if the market dips in our area, otherwise we would opt to stay where we are at and just long term invest till it does. Possibly with an out of state rental property. We are not the flashy extravagant type so if we can get to leanfire that would be awesome.

Small businesses that grew in 2020?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:12 PM PST

I hope this isn't against the rules, but here's what I am looking for... There's a lot of fear right now within the small business circles I am in, so what I am looking for right now is some hope.

Has anyone here experienced growth this year? If so, how? What changes that you made created growth in your small business? Did you pivot, were you just in a lucky industry?

What was something that brought you hope?

    I appreciate any responses.

How to add value on a tender

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:56 PM PST

Any advice on how to add value to proposals? Do you push a guarantee, include services that others may charge for, spend time doing a very detailed quote or offer breakdowns for various line items? What has worked for you?

We are a small construction subcontractor and we are looking for ways to differentiate ourselves. Or ways to sell to our strengths. Or???

We are busy and have a few good repeat clients. We are looking to expand/scale but it seems a lot of the work we are bidding on is given to the lowest price and we don't want to be the cheapest or work on jobs where everyone is there simply because they are the cheapest...

Need help on where to start

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:14 PM PST

I want to start an apothecary (selling herbal oils). I want to start small and start an online store. Where do I start? I have done my research into herbs and how to make the oils. Do I need any certifications or licenses?

When did you get your LLC, and get all of your certifications/licensure/etc?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:37 PM PST

Howdy guys! Quick little tidbit about me before I jump into the question, maybe to give some backstory. 28 year old from Florida, graphic design degree, finally putting it to use after six years since graduation. After dabbling in print on demand via mostly Redbubble since about this time last year, back in September I started a decal biz on Etsy. I'm slowly growing it, and will be branching out into screen printed tees (got one design up so far) and other things. Which I know is hella saturated, however my target niche is not so much. Eventually I will move from Etsy to a separate store, maybe keep Etsy as well, but alas that's where I am now. I'm wanting to get familiar with simpler product before I really jump in further. Plus, I work full time and have had a few surgeries over the last few months, with more coming, so I don't want to put much strain on myself.

I am finally in a place where orders are coming through frequent enough that I am feeling good about making things "official" and building even more. I know I'm going to get an LLC, and then of course I need to work on my sales tax certificate, and... That's about the extent of my immediate knowledge. I know I've got to get all my ducks in a row with that (though suggestions would be nice if you are familiar with florida!)

So really my question is, when did you guys go through the process of getting all of the official paperwork done? Did you go all in at the very beginning, wait until you reached a certain milestone, wait until a certain time of year, etcetc?

First Warehouse - Propane Heating Options? How much do I need to open the bay door for venting?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 06:34 PM PST

So I have a 2400sqft warehouse that includes a heated office 20x30. ceilings are 14'. I need to heat about 2000sqft separately. It seems pretty easy to get a forced air propane unit, maybe 100,000BTU? Which from my research is overkill but would do a quick job of getting up to 65F~ from 40F~.

My question is how much of my bay door needs to be open when running?

Is the propane option as easy as it sounds? I figured I can maintain some smaller 30lbs tanks and fill them up myself as I go instead of getting a massive 100lb tank which I don't want to pay some other company to fill. I also assume I need to store it locked up outside?

My shelving is only 10ft on the sides, it's a straight shoot down the middle. Is airflow and the ceilings going to be that big of an issue?

Last question is noise, are they deafening?

I have a warehouse sale where I want it running for customers, but normal operations I could get away with some radiate heaters I think.

How do I Split a Vehicle between my business and personal?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 04:44 PM PST

Basically, I'm not sure if this is possible but I am currently in the market for a work truck (most like a Tacoma) for my small business where I build raised bed Organic vegetable gardens and do custom indoor growing solutions.

I have been in business for a few years and continue to get larger jobs and borrowing my friends pickup is not really working anymore.

I plan to trade in my personal vehicle for a truck that will act as both my personal vehicle and my work truck.

Is there a way to split the vehicle, let's say 50/50? I'll take a personal loan out to get the vehicle but can I have my business depreciation 1/2 the value of the vehicle?

I know I can record mileage but I'm not sure if there's another way to split this vehicle.

I might be trying to do the impossible, I really don't know.

I want to keep my personal debt to income ratio low because I plan to buy a second rental property in the next couple years but don't know if my LLC can technically be held liable for the payment/keep it off my personal expenses.

My business does have a credit standing, as I have had a business credit card line for a couple years.

Any info/insight would be greatly appreciated.

How do you keep growing your small business?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:07 AM PST

I have been working on a small online reselling business, most of my time goes into sourcing for products and uploading them to my eBay page. I have been doing pretty well selling online these past couple of months but looking to see what I can do to actually scale my business and start making some more money. If you are reading this what do you think can make this business grow? is it more merch, should I have more expensive items? or do I just need to be more organized and try working less and selling more?

By the way, I also started a Youtube channel trying to see if I can generate more income by having a side hustle of some sort from having a channel, you think I'm doing too much? should I just concentrate on one thing at a time?

In case your interested in seeing what I'm doing or want to support me this is a link to the YT page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_5jHgokhP_vtDRKVgCyL4g

    How to build an MVP?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:44 PM PST

I start by sharing an incident that took place in San Francisco in 2007. Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia had moved to New York, and the city was lit because of the International Design Conference. Visitors from across the globe had come to NY, and amongst them were some of their friends who weren't able to get a hotel to stay. All the hotels, motels, and rooms were booked and reserved. The duo offered their friends their apartment to stay for the night and got some extra cash for their sustenance.

With this incident, an idea struck their minds, and they utilized this opportunity for a business. They bought a few airbeds and launched a website, "Air Bed and Breakfast." This was the birth of an MVP. Their business idea was to provide visitors a place to get a bed to sleep and breakfast in the morning.

Their idea succeeded, and their first guests became the first customers of Airbnb. This is how the duo- Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia built Airbnb- the now $26 billion company!

This young duo's approach is what we are going to know about today- MVP – Minimum Viable Product and its importance that why startups should always consider building an MVP project before launching a full version of the product.

    Square reader problem... Anyone else??

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 02:29 PM PST

Anyone else have this problem with their contactless card reader?

I've had this happen to me twice now:

The card reader has been functioning correctly up until an hour ago, when I tried to do a transaction with a customer's card. Their card wouldn't insert all the way and when I tried to do a separate transaction with my card, it also wouldn't go in all the way.

I had this same issue with the previous card reader I used, so my boss had it order the one I currently use to replace it. It's so bogus that it's giving me trouble not even 6 months of being replaced. It won't even pair with my device anymore and I don't have a phone that will take the magstripe reader. I've tried searching for answers to this particular problem on their forum but I haven't come across anything helpful.

I've checked both of the non-functioning card readers for signs of debris in the reader but didn't find any. I did notice there was a difference between mine and a functioning reader that I had to borrow from someone else.

    (MI) tax exempt client

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:13 AM PST

I'll be reaching out to a CPA pretty soon, but I'd like your guys' take. I just made a sale to a client, but they are a non-profit, so they'll be giving me a tax exempt form, and it's my first time handling that sort of transaction. I asked someone I knew who did this kind of work, and they told me I just keep the form, exempt the taxes and don't do anything else. Something doesn't quite feel right. Do I need to turn that document in anywhere for tax records? Or am I supposed to just hold onto it for my own?

Yeah, I'm a little out of the loop, I've only completed my first year in business.

    Edit: typo

Will I have to pay my pp loan back if I my 2020 total income ends up being more than my 2019 total income?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:13 AM PST

So I took out a pp loan for payroll as an independent contractor because of missed wages as my contract was shut down earlier this year because of covid. During that time I wasn't earning any income. I used the loan to cover my weekly wages that I would've earn if I were working.

Now I'm back working again and business has picked up considerably. I am currently on track to make more than I did in 2019 with the pp loan included.

Will this affect the forgiveness of my pp loan? Will I have to pay it back?
