    New Designation, Who Dis?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:17 PM PST

I am newer to reddit and post almost exclusively in r/insurance because that's what I'm passionate about, although I'm seeing that there might be a number of other threads for like minded professionals.

I've been in the industry ~8 years, almost 5 with a carrier, and TONIGHT I passed my final exam to become a CPCU!! I've been working on this goal for 2 years and I am extremely proud of myself. My friends and family don't get too fired up about my insurance endeavors so I wanted to share here where maybe some are familiar with the designation. Anyone else working towards this? Does your company give any bonus or recognition? Has it helped with securing jobs or promotions? Thanks for reading!

Insurance Company can't get in contact with their policy holder - dropping my claim

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

Hello all, I'm unfamiliar with working with insurance companies so any help would be really appreciated -

I was in a car accident. I took a picture of their insurance info, called their insurance, and made a claim. It's been about 3 weeks since then, and I've been calling and asking where we were at. Apparently they haven't been able to get in contact with their policy holder - the person I'm making a claim against for hitting my car. I asked for a time-frame on what they can do next, and the person from their insurance company says if they can't get in touch in 2 more weeks, then the claim will be dropped. Meaning, I don't get compensated, and I can't file another claim or re-open that one.

This doesn't sound very logical to me. She says it has to do with people making fraudulent claims. But then the insurance company has all the incentive to just not get in touch with their policy holder, so they don't have to pay out. The insurer is Financial Indemnity Company.

Do I need to contact my insurance provider? Or an attorney? Or the policy-holder? What incentive does the policy holder have to talk to their insurance?

    edit: I'm in California, Oakland

Filing a claim after paying out of pocket?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 06:08 AM PST

I had a wisdom tooth removed and the doctor in network said my health insurance doesn't cover it. A few other doctors I called also said my insurance doesn't cover it.

I have blue cross blue shield. The plan says it covers impacted wisdom teeth, but doesn't say anything about removal of just wisdom teeth. I feel like these doctors just checked my dental benefits which are basic cleanings etc instead of my surgery benefits.

I do not have a separate dental plan. I ended up paying for it out of pocket. Can I file a claim with my insurance? New York, US

Personal to Commercial lines broker (Ontario)

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 05:28 AM PST

I just started working in Insurance industry for less than a year. I recently got promoted from an admin role to personal lines CSR. And got a 20% raised to $52k.

After few months working, they pull me out of PL to train me for a commercial csr. We haven't talk about my salary yet as they still haven't given me the role officially, but my question is - should I ask for a raise given that they had to get approval for my last one as it is over the limit of what they can give for an internal promotion and its only been a few months?

Also is this even considered a promotion? I don't really want to look too greedy, especially that I don't have any experience yet in the industry and I really want to be in commercial.

Need Vacation override / early prescription fill, but may change jobs soon...

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 05:00 AM PST

I live in the US in Washington, DC.

My partner is on Stelara, a very expensive drug for crohn's which she takes every two months. We may be moving abroad and she's been tentatively approved to get 6 doses filled in advance. This is roughly worth $150,000 of prescriptions per their inflated price list.

Any idea what may happen is we end up changing insurance plans a few months after getting this filled? Would they in any way be able to come after us to get these prescription back or money?

Thanks in advance for anything help or advice you can provide.

    Help: Homeowners Insurance

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 04:59 AM PST

    Hi all,

My wife and I will be paying our first homeowners insurance premium, but I was hoping to get Reddit's help verifying the coverage makes sense. I tried including all relevant information:

    PROPERTY

    • Location Falls Church in Fairfax County, VA
    • Type Single Family Home
    • Year Built 1950
    • Stories 1 1/2
    • Above Grade Living Area Sq Ft 1,250
    • Land Area Sq Ft 13,040
    • Basement No (Crawlspace)
    • Assessed Land Value $262,000
    • Assessed Building Value $219,670

    POLICY

    • Provider GEICO / Travelers
    • Premium $674

    COVERAGE LIMITS

    • A - Dwelling $270,00
    • B - Other Structures $27,000
    • C - Personal Property $135,000
    • D - Loss of Use $40,000
    • E - Personal Liability $500,000
    • F - Medical Payments to Others $2,000
    • Earthquake 10% of Dwelling (adds $70 to Premium)
    • Water Back Up and Sump Discharge or Overflow $5,000

    DEDUCTIBLES

    • All Other Perils $2,500
    • Earthquake $27,000

The water back up limit seems a little low but I'm not sure. I'm also wondering whether it makes sense to go with earthquake coverage.

    Thank you for your help.

I got in a car wreck with a personal injury attorney.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 08:43 PM PST

MT, I t-boned another driver. They ran a red light making a left in front of me. I have not obtained the crash report yet but the responding Highway Patrol Officer said there were no witnesses and that he could make no determination of who was at fault.

The other driver happens to be a personal injury attorney. My insurance company informed me that he had not made a claim on his insurance but that he had filed a lawsuit against me for his injuries (possible concussion). I did not sustain any injuries.

I do not believe myself to be at fault. My insurance will hire an attorney to defend me. I am covered for up to $1 million in damages.

My questions are: What can I expect to happen? How can I be best prepared to deal with it?

Thanks in advance, this is stressful and I'm clueless about this kind of thing.

    Car Crash

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 11:27 PM PST

Hey guys, so today I was driving and I happened to stop because the light turned red. So while I was waiting for it to turn green a crash happened right in front of me and one of the drivers lost control and hit me. I called the cops (they did report) and the driver at fault had no insurance. What do I do? The car is mine since I bought it however, the car is under my dads insurance (liability). But I was the one driving.

Car found after insurance claim settled

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:12 AM PST

My car was recently stolen and now a few weeks after the claim has been settled the car was found by police. It seems in reasonable condition and still runs. However, I've spent a good portion of the settlement now.

Do I need to report this to my old insurance company? And will they be expecting me to return the settlement in full?

General Question: How do I “shop around” for insurance?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:02 AM PST

I'm located in Northern California. I want to know how to find the different insurance companies that aren't the big name ones. I always hear that for car insurance it's best to shop around to get a good price but I genuinely don't know how to do this. When I search it up, all I find are State Farm, geico, all state, etc. they all have similar pricing. I want to know how to do this as it applies to other insurance I'd have to buy in the future as well. Thank you for your help!

    Changing deductible and coverage

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 06:22 PM PST

I somehow accidentally signed a homeowners policy that had a wind/hail deductible of 5% which is $11,820. That's about the cost of a roof. Apparently this kind of plan is unheard of in my area, but I missed the fine print at the bottom that described the difference between the wind/hail deductible and the regular deductible. I need my roof replaced. I went ahead and changed my deductible today. Here is my question: Will my insurance cover the roof at the new deductible rate? Will they require me to wait a certain amount of time before I can file a claim on the roof since I just changed the deductible?

Can't believe I made this mistake. Thanks for any answers or advice.

Issue with Plumber - Water Damage

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:29 AM PST

We recently had plumbing work performed and needed a new acid neutralizer installed to treat our well water. The plumber and team came out on 11/24 to install the system. Everything seemed fine.

Fast forward to 11/30 and we noticed that the carpets in our basment around the plumbing equipment were very wet. I noticed dripping water coming from the new system. We called the plumber and he came back on 12/1 to tighten the equipment, but didn't investigate for any other potential sources of water. We woke up on 12/2 to discover the carpets to be completely soaked and a broader area. The issue was not resolved. We immediately called the plumber, but they couldn't send someone until 12/3. In the interim, I discovered that there was a tube that was connected to the old system that was pouring water out when our water softener went through its regen cycle. The plumber failed to close this tube off which caused the damage.

He came back on 12/3 (I wasn't home at the time) and he fixed the issue, but did not bring any fans or anything to help dry out the floors. We are running 2 fans and a dehumidifer, but the carpets are remaning wet and the smell is becoming unbearable. We have contacted the plumber again on 12/4, but have not heard anything further.

How do I go about pursuing this with the plumber? We either need to have a restoration company try to salvage the carpets and address any mold, or have the carpets and pads replaced. Should I hire a company to come and then file a claim with him for the costs? Or wait for him to address the situation and file a claim with his insurance? I am very concerned that we won't get a response from him in a timely manner and the issue will become worse.

I am in Maryland. The plumber is from Pennsylvania with insurance for PA and MD.

(X-POST from r/LegalAdvice) Vehicle taken by police as part of crime scene; insurance not providing any compensation

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 06:01 AM PST

Edit 12/4: So, so thankful for everyone offering advice. You guys are giving me hope that there may still be options to untangle this mess, and I really need that right now!

    KENTUCKY

I did my best to find information on any similar situation but there doesn't appear to be much out there that I've found specific enough to be helpful - hoping someone here can provide me with some options.

My car was stolen by someone who broke into my home and took the spare key. A week after it was stolen, the car was seen driving around & stopped by police. Unfortunately, the stop resulted in an officer fatally shooting the individual driving (who I assume is the burglar who stole it to begin with).

My car insurance (full coverage) would only pay for the vehicle as lost if it was missing for 14 or more days, which it wasn't. Because the car was found, they now consider it recovered. HOWEVER, because the vehicle was part of a crime scene and there's the lingering possibility of a wrongful death suit against the police, the police say they must keep the car for a minimum of 2 years.

I still owe money on the car. So now I'm paying car payments for a vehicle the police are keeping for 2+ years AND having to pay for a rental vehicle since my insurance no longer considers the car to be missing. Insurance also stated they can't even offer payment for the estimated repair costs of any damage done because they're not able to access the vehicle for inspection.

Is there anything that can be done about this? At the absolute minimum, I don't want to be making payments on a vehicle I can't drive for several years. This is a financial mess I'd like any possible help to get out of.

EDIT: I've been combing through the Policy Book for the relevant sections and found these relevant sections:

Comprehensive Coverage:We will pay:...c. transportation expenses incurred by an insured as a result of the total theft of your car or a newly acquired car. These transportation expenses are payable:during the period that:a) starts on the date you report the theft to us; andb) ends on the earliest of:i) the date the vehicle is returned to your possession in a drivable conditionsii) the date we offer to pay for the loss if the vehicle has not yet been recovered; oriii) the date we offer to pay for the loss if the vehicle is recovered, but is a total loss as determined by us; andduring the period that:a) starts on the date the vehicle is left at a repair facility if the stolen vehicle is recovered, returned to your possession in a drivable condition, and has unrepaired damage that resulted from total theft; andb) ends on the date the vehicle is repairedThese transportation expenses must be reported to us before we will pay such incurred expenses.

There's a nearly identical section for a daily rental charge:

Car Rental ExpenseWe will pay the daily rental charge incurred when you rent a car from a car business while your car or a newly acquired car is:

    1. not drivable; or

    2)being repaired

as a result of a loss which would be payable under the Comprehensive Coverage or Collision Coverage. We will pay this daily rental charge incurred during a period that:

    1. starts on the date:

    a) the vehicle is not drivable as a result of the loss; orb) the vehicle is left at a repair facility if the vehicle is drivable; and2) end on the earliest of:a) the date the vehicle has been repaired or replaced;b) the date we offer to pay for the loss if the vehicle is repairable but you choose to delay repairs; orc) five days after we offer to pay for the loss if the vehicle is:i) a total loss as determined by us; orii) stolen and not recovered. The amount of any such daily rental charge incurred by you must be reported to us before we will pay such amount.

There's then a section that addresses the limits of Car Rental Expense per day per loss based on my policy.

Finally, there's this clause under the Exclusions for Comprehensive Coverage:

THERE IS NO COVERAGE FOR:...9. LOSS TO ANY COVERED VEHICLE THAT RESULTS FROM THE TAKING OF OR SEIZURE OF THAT COVERED VEHICLE BY ANY GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY

So based on that last clause, I'd only be able to claim transportation expenses from the time period that the car was stolen until it was taken as evidence by the police?

    Delta Dental Plan Sharing?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:30 PM PST

    Hi all,

I was laid off in May and had to find non-employer based insurance in MN. I got a health plan with a Delta Dental add-on for $15/mo. In July I went in to get a standard cleaning, which once a year is 100% covered. So, naturally, I received a bill for $167 two months later. I called DD and asked why my cleaning wasn't covered, since I triple checked the terms to make sure it should have been. The representative explained to me that because I had another cleaning in JANUARY, under my employer's plan, they counted that as my once-a-year cleaning. I pointed out that this coverage wasn't in effect until June 1st, and the representative casually explained that Delta Dental does "plan sharing" (whatever the ** that is), so the cleaning in January counted on my current plan that wasn't even effective until June. So what the hell have I even been paying for?! No where in the terms did I see this outlined. Dare I argue it?

Insuring vehicles in bulk? (~6 cars, 25 motorcycles)

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:24 PM PST

Colorado, but need advice for other states too if possible.

Just curious / asking for future reference.

I've tried calling insurance companies and the answers I usually get are equivalent to "I don't know."

Just curious if there's a way to insure a bunch of vehicles so that they can be titled/registered/road legal without having to insure everything individually.

Bailee insurance or E&O professional liability insurance - bridal alterations

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:10 PM PST

My wife alters expensive wedding dresses. We don't own a shop or anything, they just come here to our home, get fitted, then leave the dress here while she works on it.

Let's say my wife accidentally cuts a hem too short on a $10,000 dress.

Would this be a scenario where a Bailee "damage in process" would cover it, or would we need professional liability coverage? I'm confused about the fundamental difference between the two concepts.

My farther had a whole life policy I never knew existed.... but what is it worth?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 04:49 PM PST

Hi, my father passed away a few moths ago. Today i received a letter from an insurance company about a life insurance policy i did not know existed. It is a whole life policy started in 1964 when my Dad was 32. the face value was $5K and he paid premiums of $124.0 every year. They won't yet tell me how much the policy is worth until I send some documents, but they said it is more than 10K. Is there any way to estimate the payout value based on that? Thanks

Bought a coop in NYC, completely lost on insurance

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 03:56 PM PST

So I just cannot figure out what proper insurance looks like. We are in the process of buying a 2B2B ~1000sqft in New York in a coop building. An insurance broker our agent recommended quoted an insurance package that's something like 2250/year (~2000 for HO6, 250 for umbrella).

This feels super high to us (and deductible is 2500) a friend in a similar building is paying ~100/month in a similar property. The agent mentioned most people are underinsured in New York, though we're more worried about expected value over having iron tight insurance in all cases.

I can obviously get quotes from places, but I'm unsure of how much insurance coverage to have outside of our personal possessions and the fact that we need liability insurance in case of damage to neighbors' apartments.

Does anyone have any advice as to how we should approach things? This is by far the most opaque part of the process.

COVID Travel Bans - insurance? [CA, USA]

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:49 PM PST

We have a **safe** trip planned in a few months (imagine: a fancy rented cabin, in the middle of nowhere, driving there with everything we'll need for our stay).

However, there are rumors that our County / State (CA, USA) will soon put in place travel restrictions. Things like "residents cannot travel for more than XX miles unless it is one of the reasons YY".

At that point, we're unlikely to meet the restrictions set by XX and YY, and we'll certainly want to stay at home, to comply with the order.

We can certainly cancel the trip now for a small fee, but even if the order passes, hopefully it will only be in place for a few weeks? And in a few months, we'll be clear to travel? Who knows what the requirements will be then.

I tried to call our insurance company to see if they still offer travel insurance. They do, but it doesn't seem to cover COVID related stuff? Certainly not cancellations due to travel restrictions.

Are you aware of any insurance that would cover the cost at least of the rental? In case of COVID related travel bans or restrictions?
