I created a new blog with only one post. Got 7000 views in a day. Here is what happened Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:59 AM PST Two weeks ago I created a brand new blog for SpreadTheWorld. I wanted to start some SEO efforts that will generate traffic to my product. I know SEO is a long term game, I thought that maybe I can leverage the content through distribution. The ContentTo kickstart my blog I wanted some good content that provides value to the readers. I don't bother much about keywords, for now, I just wanted something valuable that will help both SEO & marketing. My first post was about one of my favorite topics: How to use Reddit as an IndieHacker.I wrote a long post (750 words) about my experience and how you should use Reddit at each stage of your start-up. Then I cleaned it up with Grammarly and Hemmingway - to remove mistakes and improve readability. My goals with that blog post were (in that order):
I created some call to action for this. I added a CTA at the end of the post redirecting to my Twitter: "Do you want to launch on Reddit? DM me on Twitter, I'll be happy to help → Twitter"The footer of each blog post was designed with a CTA to bring traffic to my product. DistributionI posted the article on the blog. It generates no traffic at all, no surprise, it's the very first post. Then I posted to IndieHackers, on a Saturday. Not the best day to share content, I got only 12 upvotes and a few comments. I also tried Reddit (on a weekday) and got small traction on /r/Entrepreneur: 56 upvotes and 25 comments. Nothing extraordinary for a community with 900k members… As I'm trying to start using HackerNews I also posted the link of my post to HN with the title: "How to Use Reddit as an IndieHacker". It got no upvotes, I just watched the post drawing in the "New" section and disappear :/ I thought: "ok, my post wasn't that good, I'll write a new one and try again". Retry!A few days later, I read a tweet from someone explaining that you should re-post your content on HN. That can make some results and the community is ok with that. So I tried. I just made a small modification in the title: instead of
I did
I know that getting the first users is a real pain (that's why I created SpreadTheWorld), so I figured that, maybe, it will catch more attention. I checked an hour later and the post got a massive spike on my analytics tool! 📷The post just exploded! At this time I got 36 upvotes and was #5 on the homepage! Homepage of Hacker NewsThat day was crazy! My blog post stayed on the homepage for almost 8hrs, brought me, 6000 visitors - sometimes more than 100 concurrent users!I also got 100+ comments on the HN post, I spent the day answering them and trying to keep the momentum going!I also monitored Twitter to thank every shout-out and try to create some momentum there as well. Here is the live Tweet Final StatsA week after the post, here are the stats:
The conversion wasn't good!I told you earlier that I had some CTA on the blog + on the bottom of my post to convert the audience. They didn't work! A very few people clicked on them, the bottom of my post was too muddled and the text was too vague. I removed all the useless links, and re-word the CTA And it worked! The conversion rate jumped from 0,6% to 2,3%! I also added a CTA in the header (the day after) - a lot of visitors wasn't going to the end of the post: The conversion is now way higher, almost 10% of the blog visitors go on the product page! I did all these experiments during the rush, so I kind of miss this wave of visitors, but I'm ready for the next one! Takeaways

Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:38 AM PST Learning to code allowed me to make my ideas a reality. When I first tried to learn to code, I had no idea where to start. Online courses, theoretical CS classes, books, etc. just didn't click for me. I couldn't build anything useful, like a website or mobile app. I was frustrated until I discovered the concept of learning by doing. I then built fun mini-projects, such as a to-do app and a weather app by Googling my way online and watching tutorial videos. Instead of memorizing syntax, I was able to create websites accessible by anyone on the internet. That was game-changing for me. I could finally make something useful. Fast forward to today, I might not know advanced CS theory, but I can build minimally viable products (MVPs) to test ideas, iterate upon projects to add new features, and I have a good idea how to create digital products with seamless user experiences. Whenever someone asks me for advice for learning to code, I say this: The best way to learn to code is to just start. For example, if you have an idea and you want to build a landing page to test demand, google "How can I build a landing page in HTML and CSS?" (or something similar like "how to make a website with HTML/CSS?") and spend a few hours going through tutorials and youtube videos. That's how I learned — and I wouldn't have wanted to learn to code any other way. Over time, it gets hard to find the right resources. That's why I created Enlight, which has a directory of projects in web development and data science. You can access the projects for free here. I'd start with a beginner level Web Development project, like a to-do app or weather app to get an introduction. Most Enlight projects take ~1 hour, and it's really cool to have a finished project you can share with anyone! Over the past four years, Enlight has grown to 12k+ users, 40+ community-contributed projects, and 1 million+ total pageviews — so you're in good company! You can also join our community discord to ask questions and interact with other learners. As I built Enlight with my team, we came across another problem: motivation and accountability. Learning alone is really hard. And that's why we created the Enlight Cohort program, which is a two-week introductory web development bootcamp. We've had 200+ learners go through the cohort since July, many of them being entrepreneurial students and professionals. The next cohort starts this Sunday, December 6th. If you're interested, you can learn more here. I'm happy to answer any questions! I love talking about learning to code! :) [link] [comments] |
Why B2B is considered easier to market than B2C? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:10 AM PST Most of the posts I read, about creating SASS business, for example, say that B2B is easier than B2C. I kinda believe it too, but I want to know more in-depth (marketing research, getting customers, etc). I'm asking that because I want to build a product, but most of my ideas are more towards B2C for some reason. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
"Move Fast and Break Things" - NO! NO! NO! Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:31 AM PST This is advice from Mark Zuckerberg. It's very romantic and sexy. And to works great for companies that have millions to "burn and learn". The entrepreneur's I work with don't have millions to B&L. They have $100K to "get it right the first time". I'm writing this because I had yet another meeting with a prospect that had the same story I've heard well over 100 times: "I hired a cheap developers from (Upwork, India, my cousin's friend), and after 9 months and $100K, I have a half-built app that's useless and I am out of money". Don't get me wrong... there are great developers on Upwork and from India / Philippines, and I am sure your cousin's friend is also a great developer. It's not the skill that's the issue and the reason for a 95%+ failure rate. The core issue is a lack of fundamental pre-planning, scoping, and understanding of what exactly the entreprenuer is creating. A proper scoping and planning phase can easily be 25% of the entire project. And if you skip this phase, you can offer a significantly lower rate to an unsavvy founder. The problem is, you can't build something if you don't know what you're building. I am sure you've heard the carpenters credo: Measure Twice, Cut Once. The carpenter will actually spend more time measuring than cutting. Software development is a quantum order more complex than carpentry. Why would you skip the planning phase?!? Entrepreneurs... please, please, please... do not skip the planning phase. Treat it as the most important phase of the project. The time spent will more than pay for itself when you have the app you want in the tie you want at the cost you want. Lots of great resources out there to learn how to scope and define. The whole process should no more then 3-6 weeks, and will absolutely set you up for success. "Move Moderately and Build Awesome Things" [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:07 PM PST I started my business LeadGen Network to help small and medium businesses grow through the internet and we also offer recruitment services. This plan took me almost a year to finally figure out and plan. Problem is that now I need to hire people and its hard when you dont got much money to your name. I cant use fiverr since i need to pay upgront and for upwork I would need to be 18 and I wont be 18 for a couple of months. I need customer service reps, recruiters, telemarketers, email managers, and a VA. I cant do these things myself since I am dealing with alot at home (i had to drop out at 16 bc of it). Im looking to hire or outsource by the hour and by commission. any tips on how to do so? Im able to pay people outside the US. [link] [comments] |

Have audience, have designers - looking for high end clothing manufacturer (kind of like J!nx) Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:51 PM PST Hello! My small business is doing well and id like to spin off into merchandise (hats, hoodies, shirts etc) that are higher quality than the run of the mill POD shops. Ive been working with many designers with popular products outside of clothing and id like to port our best sellers into a clothing representation. Similar to the cloths from Jinx possibly https://www.jinx.com/ I have the audience, the niche, the designers - need a clothing manufacturer to help with designs and production. Thank you! Investors, Crowdfunding, or independent funding? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:48 AM PST Hey all, I have been working on a small smart device company for a few months now, alongside working full time as a mechanical engineer. I'm reaching the point where I really need to decide on how to go about funding; talking to investors, crowd funding, or investing my own money. It's a consumer-based product, I have a 70% positivity rate ("would buy, I would love this thing") out of 50 some surveys sent out, so I figure about a third of that is truthful. It's patent pending, final package design is done, and I am just waiting on software/app/website/electronics. I believe this product would do well on Kickstarter, and believe that the bottom line funding would be around 25K, but my business partner and I think it could go much further (250k, maybe). Any suggestions? Would it be good to at least meet with a potential investor or two (with NDA,) see their reaction, then decide? Any information, advice and tips would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks! -Tanner [link] [comments] |
Starting a marketplace after being a seller on one Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:33 PM PST Suppose you are a seller on a marketplace, and decide to start a marketplace of your own. It's a niche space. Right now I need the income I earn from the marketplace but I wouldn't do both simultaneously. I'd close my account on the marketplace before I start my own. I don't want to get sued/be served a cease and desist. It's a lot of hard work to start a company, and also expensive to bootstrap in the B2C space. It's not like they've copyrighted the concept of a marketplace. Lots of marketplaces look the same and have the same features just like lots of online stores might use the same layouts, templates etc. I checked the terms which says: Service Content, Software and Trademarks: You acknowledge and agree that the Service may contain content or features ("Service Content") that are protected by copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights and laws. Except as expressly authorized by XXX, you agree not to modify, copy, frame, scrape, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on the Service or the Service Content, in whole or in part, except that the foregoing does not apply to your own User Content (as defined below) that you legally upload to the Service. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:21 PM PST I'm now 20 years old and I dream to be an entrepreneur one day. If I can say so myself I'm a smart guy, I can learn quickly and I have a highly developed common sense. School isn't doing it for me, bc always repeating knowledge, which AI can do better, I find it very useless. So I'm planning to go into the business world, as an entrepreneur. My question is, How do I find a mentor that can guide me through this world, bc I'm completely new. Is there anything I can do right now to start with, I have some free time and need some money. Is there anything that you guys can recommend to start with? Just as I said I'm a noob, but I really want this. [link] [comments] |
[Looking for Feedback] Starting a Supply Chain/Procurement Consultancy Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:54 PM PST I want to help startups and small businesses grow by taking on their procurement and supply chain programs without them having to hire more people. My model would look a little different than normal consultancy-type companies - my company would get paid a percentage of any savings we achieve. If we don't save the company money, we don't get paid. Example: We do a spend audit and find 100k worth of addressable spend. Our projects achieve $20k in savings and we take 20% of the savings, netting the company $4k revenue and saving the business 16k in the first year. I'm looking for feedback on this idea/model and would love any tips on where you would start building this kind of company. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
What do you guys think about a chat widget for your website with built-in social proof? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:53 PM PST I'm developing a live group chat widget for websites owners to allow live chat discussions on their website. It uses Twitter so you can see who each person is chatting is by taking their twitter bio: https://imgur.com/a/pjlhgwY example video: https://streamable.com/wj4g83 Do you think this will help you with social proof when selling a product or service? You can get customers to leave you a nice feedback or show other website visitors that real people are using your products and asking you questions directly on your website. [link] [comments] |
[Research Survey] As a small business owner, what marketing tools/platforms do you use? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:19 PM PST Hi everyone! I'm conducting a survey to gather information about the different applications, platforms, and other marketing tools that small business owners and entrepreneurs use in order to gauge how they reach their customers. I'm working on building an application to better support local businesses, so all responses are important! Happy to see any feedback or recommendations for improvement. https://forms.gle/pn8s3J29ikPtyG1i9 I appreciate all your comments! [link] [comments] |

Landscapers: How much do you charge? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:18 PM PST As I work on starting a landscaping company, I'm finding myself struggling to set prices and ensure that they are competitive with other landscapers. I will be servicing a relatively affluent area in the Northeast (median house listing $580K). Specifically, I'm curious how much you would charge for three guys to manually weed (no weedwacking or chemicals), edge, and perform a basic cleanup of a yard. How much more would you charge if you added mowing to this package? Right now, I'm leaning towards charging $75/hour (not including mowing) for weeding, edging, and light yard cleanup. The breakdown for this is as follows:
This comes out to roughly $75/hr, or $225 for three hours. I figure I would add anywhere from $50-$100 if mowing was included. Please let me know if these prices seem reasonable, and what you would charge for similar services. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:47 AM PST Hey guys, I started a project where I wanted to build a company information database but stopped halfway. I wonder if anyone wants a free list of companies in a specific industry in the UK. If you need that just let me know and I'll share the link. Again for now this is free as I don't know how to monetize it but most likely I'll monetize this sometime in the future. [link] [comments] |
