I’ve got a internal ethics question

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:58 PM PST

I work in a small family business that my father owns and my cousin is running the show for now

Something is happening that makes me question my cousins loyalty to the business and I'm wondering if he's making shady deals to extend his hand with the companies money

We have a customer that is going to pay us 85000 for a job to be done , but to do the job we have to use a service from a third party , my cousins brother in law owns a company that does this service but his price is double the competitors price and further away making it cost more in both time and materials .

Right now is not a good time to be overspending as no one in America is sure when the countries economy will be back to a good place and I understand helping someone out is good but at a what cost ? Right now after I run the numbers we'll be spending 15 thousand more than what it would cost from another company and our profit would be reduced from 45 thousand to 30 thousand.

I think this may be something to look at but if I bring this up to my dad I'm worried he will fire my cousin , and I certainly do not want this to happen but I am not the one running this company right now but This company feeds my family and anything negative hurts me personally to some end .

Should I throw my cousin under the bus for this situation or let it be?

    Betting on myself!!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:07 PM PST

I just started a small business. This exhilarating and exhausting. I have been unemployed since November 2019. After over a year looking for a new job that would pay me a livable wage in San Francisco, I decided to create my own job. In the past 3 days, I have registered my business, filed for a Fictitious Business Name, built a company website, started a Linked In Company Page, setup a twitter account, booked a professional headshot session, created a logo and ordered business cards.

I am also currently doing 2 small projects (started those on December 1st) for free that will be done in early January to use as client sample work. My planned public launch date is Monday, January 4, 2021. I am very excited and have not told anyone but needed to let it out somewhere.

Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it!

What length will you go to to keep a customer happy? Sorry for the long post; looking for advice on how to better handle difficult customer

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:45 PM PST

I am a one woman shit show, making and selling shelves online. I have 152 sales as of today. Out of 152 customers I have had 2 people less than thrilled.

    1) 89 year old woman, local. I drove to her house and literally set up the shelf for her. She loved it. Perfect. Done.

    2) Karen.

Karen was difficult from the get go. Very lengthy texts, wanted me to guarantee (as if I'm a post man and it's. COVID) the date it would be there (TX to CA) b/c she's having a friend come set it up, etc. I send her 2 shelves by the date that she requested... She loves them but something just isn't right about the larger one.

-I send her DETAILED instructions via text. She still doesn't get it.

-I made her an 11 minute youtube video with an exact same shelf as if I had just gotten it in the mail. How I would go from package to wall. I set up the entire shelf explaining what type of items would be best supported in each area on the shelf. Karen still doesn't get it.

-She's sending videos of the issue and I dont see any issue, but I wanted her to be happy, so I continue to entertain her. She tells me she has OCD...

-Karen says she wants to mail back, she will pay for shipping and NO RUSH, can I please fix it and send her a new one? Of course I say yes. Truly, through all of this, I have been NICE to this woman. Helpful, apologetic and enthusiastic and blah blah.

-She asks actually, can you mail me the new one first so i have somewhere to put my things? I didn't really know how to react to this but it definitely made me uncomfortable and I politely said no, I would like to have the faulty one first since I have had NO OTHER COMPLAINS AT ALL and I want to see what exactly is going on here.

-Karen mails back. SHE mailed it back in a box 3x the size of the shelf, costing her $50 (IMO this is not my problem or fault, it should've been closer to $18 had she used proper packaging).

-Issue with shelf: It's 5 tiers. 2/5 tiers are 1/8" shorter in width. I review the videos she'd sent me and now I can see what was bothering her - 2/5 were 1/8" off. I make these all the time and I wouldn't have ever noticed this so it's a VERY particular issue that I confidently don't think anyone else besides Karen or a likeminded fellow Karen would notice.

-I offer to send her another shelf for free b/c of the trouble. She wants it. Cool.

-She continues to bitch about the $50 shipping and throws out "well if you just cover the shipping back and the free shelf we are all good". I DIDNT WANT TO AGREE TO THIS. But I was a pushover and I did because I really want all of my customers to be happy and I didn't want to piss her off. I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!

    - FF to today: I have had her shelf for just under 3 weeks. I just finished my finals and I'm selling via fb marketplace, when an order is placed, I have 3 business days to make, pack, ship said shelf or fb automatically cancels the order. I've been getting steady orders and I haven't had time to send her a new shelf yet. Also, I am doing this all alone and I don't have any help. As of today, she's getting rude. I explain the aforementioned and she doesn't care. She just wants her shelf, thanks!

Well now I"m pissed. I'm down to cover shipping and give her a free shelf if she's being a non-Karen. But with her rude ass attitude today I am seriously regretting my kindness.. I just finished the new one and I am mailiing tomorrow. if God forbid this woman says anything besides "Omg love it" I'm probably going to snap on her. I haven't had ANYONE even close to as difficult as this woman and I think I have really done a lot for her and 151 other people haven't had this problem (minus 89F #1).

So yea, what do yall think Reddit?

How can I avoid this in the future? How would you have handled Karen? What is a timely turn around for receiving and returning items? Please, keep COVID in mind for the time being. Thanks!!

TL;DR: Very difficult customer. I have gone to great lengths to assist her and offered free item and begrudgingly agreed to cover shipping back to her. She is now being rude and I don't know how to handle moving forward if she continues to be difficult.

    Market Research and Analytics

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:15 PM PST

I am thinking about starting an apothecary, selling homemade herbal lotions. My question is that I want to see what 20 year olds are looking for verses 30, 40 and so forth (I want the products to feel more personalized). How would I go about this, should I make a survey monkey and have the local population take it? I could reach out to the local community through Nextdoor...or should I post a link on a trusted forum/subreddit? Please advise.

Starting a small business based on my new found Tiktok fame. What’s the best website developer to use?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:06 PM PST

I'm dyslexic so please bare that in mind when reading sorry for any errors.

I'm looking to have a split format (two sides to one website) I have one Instagram page with a sizeable following mainly women's fashion, I'm looking to sell jewellery, accessories that I get for a really good price and I know my targets audience and what they like. I'm going to use my skills to market my Instagram page on TIktok.

My other other endeavour is going to be based from my more successful Tiktok with millions of views and thousands of followers (4K new followers per day) but primarily focusing on careers advice, stock investments and so on. I've also started a YouTube channel.

I know it's a odd mix but I just want the home page to have two portals to either side so it's all under one brand name. Currently I'm running with one name (same prefix but different suffixes) hence why I what it all on one site. With different themes.

Long story short i have a lot of demand but no platform to sell them on, I've had requests just to take payments directly through PayPal but I want a website. What's the best web developer that won't cost a fortune in the long run but has a solid and reliable web design?

I've used Weebly before but I had issues with the website in mobile which primarily most of my sales were and will be generated from.

I'm dyslexic sorry for any errors I'm really trying my best thanks for reading :)

Does it make sense to create a holding company?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:49 PM PST

    Quick Summary

    • I work a job as a professional and looking to buy a rental property
    • I own 5% stake in a corporation on the side with a friend. The money I make here puts me into the next tax bracket
    • My father owns some property and has some cash he wants to invest

My thought is to start a holding company with my dad. We would both put in some cash, he would include his property and i would transfer my 5% or the corp to the holding company. We would then buy rental properties as individual LLCs under the parent company. My thought is I can use the money from the corporation that is putting me into a higher tax bracket to invest with out paying income tax on it. I could also use the holding company for write-offs.

Is this a good idea? Am I missing anything? We are in California, should the parent company be in Wyoming?

And advice on how I should proceed, pros and cons, other options, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

    When to close a business?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:01 AM PST

    Hey ya'll,

I am a small business owner and have now been in business for 3 years. I own a small fitness studio and am owner/operator. I have two part time employees but I bring in about 90% of the revenue. I have been paying myself the bare minimum in order to grow the business and pay off all debts. I was able to clear all my debt in the first two years and was gonna use this 3rd year as a gage of how well the business was doing and growing.

Unfortunately, this year we also got hit with the pandemic and had to shut down for 3 months. On top of that I also lost about 20-35% of my clients who are afraid to return. I am breaking even on a monthly basis but I am paying myself peanuts and wouldn't be able to support myself if I didn't live at home with my parents.

My question here is, should I consider shutting down and moving on from the business?

Factors to consider: - pay myself/make way less than the going rate - at the end of my lease - covid is not done and cases are at an all time high

Any insight from anyone who has gone through closing a business or any advice is greatly appreciated.

I need the experts and experienced business owners for this one...

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:56 PM PST

    Hi Everyone,

So I've been a hard working employee all my life but I'm finally about to take the leap and go out on my own with a new small business. I've got several pieces in place and I'm finalizing my business plan now, but one final thing that I need is a basic but professional website for potential customers to find my services and see my precious work. I went to Google to search this exact topic but honestly it all seems a bit overwhelming. I don't have a lot of extra cash right now to put towards a website so I'm thinking more DIY. What do you all recommend or use thats something I can build myself pretty quickly?

Sitting on a war chest of $, how do i proceed?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:30 PM PST

So I run a digital marketing agency in one of the few niches that is thriving in the pandemic

Our monthly revenue went from 20k to 70k since the pandemic hit and its still growing

Expenses have risen in turn, with top line profits staying almost identical (10k-20k ish) throughout the whole ordeal. I've had to hire a lot of people and invested a lot in marketing.

    I have access to ~350k

    The following are my options:

    • Invest with my brothers: This money will be tied up in a family business that can promise a good and stable return, but very little liquidity. I may actually not see a dollar here for years. Its either going to be jewelry or real estate, both slow ROI.

    • Sit on it: With current expenses, my burn is 50k/mo in the case that everything goes tits up. I understand this isnt entirely likely but just to err on the side of caution, i would feel safe having a few months of runway.

    • Lateral expansion: I could grow the company more through other verticals, but these would be high risk, long term investments (SAAS).

    • Stocks/Indexes: I'm ashamed to say i dont know jack shit about this part. I've done well for myself so far in the small business world at 26, but once it comes to big business/finances, im at a loss. I broke even on bitcoin a while ago, and i made a few grand investing in alphabet, thats my knowledge here. No 401k, no insurance.

Anything im missing here? Which route would be best?

Update: I am recruiting one of my friends as an employee

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:49 AM PST

    original post

So this update is way earlier than we expected, so we started working together for bits and doing some work together (we didn't start officially as my business was having a one week break) and today while discussing some things about the business an email from uni came and MY FRIEND SECURED A SCHOLARSHIP, so she doesn't need to work any more with me but she told me she wants to continue working with me but without a salary or contract or whatsoever, she wants to work as a friendly favor for me sticking with her at the time.

I am going to update you again after probably one month as we are still doing work together and we are planning to continue till uni (but no Salary as mentioned before) but i just wanted to update you guys and thank you for your help and advice as they were all appreciated

Edit: yes i am giving her the money she was supposed to get but she doesn't know that, either as a uni fund or wait for an occasion to gift it

    Thoughts? Ideas? Advice?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:15 PM PST

    Hello!

I'm slowly getting into starting a small business. I've bought a Cricut machine & epson printer. Did it on a impulsive decision. I thought I can create cute things or start making stickers. Im not creative at all. Pretty much just wasted money.... dumb decision. Now I bought a lot Starbucks cups. And trying think what I can do... I was thinking maybe like a like box full of gifts. Like similar to a FabFitFun box obviously handmade items. (Make up pouch with name, tumblers, possibly make a cute tray like a eyelash holder) I really don't know. I've so much ideas but the fear of failing or not being good possibly stopping me. Or maybe this isn't for me?

My boyfriend says I should resale name brand clothes. But based off the apps I have for reselling doesn't seem like much a profit.

Can you tell me your success story? Or any advice to push me? Or honestly to just pack everything up and sale everything I bought. 😔

    Invoicing solutions: Stripe vs Freshbooks

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 03:23 PM PST

Hi all! 90% of our revenue comes from CC charges and stripe is great for that. However, we also have a handful of consulting clients and right now we use Freshbooks for that.

However, more recently I have been wondering why we can't use Stripe to invoice our consulting customers. They all pay by check or wire, but stripe allows you to mark invoices as paid by external means.

Just curious if there's anything I'm missing. Does anyone use stripe to invoice for anything that isn't paid by CC? Does it work well?
