Important Year-End Dates to Remember for Payroll Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:19 PM PST If your small business had a payroll for the calendar year 2020, including both W2 and 1099 employees, here are some dates that you should mark on your calendars! January 27, 2021 is the deadline to E-file your W-2 forms with the Social Security Administration and your state. If you use a payroll software or service, this should be easy. If you do this manually, make sure you start early. January 29, 2021 is the deadline to E-file your 1099-NEC so they can be processed and postmarked to your contractors by February 1, 2021. Contact an expert consultant or CPA to learn about how 1099s might be treated differently this year. February 1, 2021 is the deadline to to mail W-2 forms and 1099-NEC forms to employees and contractors. Again, if you use a payroll service or software, these filing options should be available to you automatically and should not take much time. Aim to have them done by mid-January. If you file these manually, or outside of a service, be sure to start as soon as possible. [link] [comments] |
The No Asshole Rule - How We Failed to Follow It Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:37 AM PST Hi, I'm Alex and I am the CEO of Bloomy Lab. We develop mobile apps to improve the quality of life and develop creativity. After my last post on Reddit, many people asked me how I managed to recruit a team and how I hired employees. I will share my life hacks for hiring with you. But in this article, I'd like to tell a story showing you that even if a candidate has an excellent resume and work experience, it will not guarantee the absence of problems:) Let's go! A company is looking for an iOS programmerLast year, we were concerned about finding an iOS developer for one of our products. After several interviews, we met Joe (name has been changed). Joe was a young specialist. At the same time, he already had a certain work experience. He lived in another city, but for us, this is not a problem. We have always supported remote work if our employee expressed such a desire. As it turned out, not everyone can organize their working day at home, even if they say they had such an experience. But first things first. We noticed that trivial tasks, which usually took no more than 2-3 hours in an office environment, dragged on for weeks. At the same time, Joe was quite convincingly telling us that he was about to finish the task, and just in two days, he would hand over the project. But "tomorrow" never came. His reaction to our questions and comments was disruptive, even a little theatrics. Joe was blaming himself and telling us this would never happen again. After his speech, he usually sighed thoughtfully - "It seems to me that I am pulling your project down ... I guess I failed to make the cut ...". With these words, Joe had gone offline. As a result, later Joe told us that for personal reasons he did not have enough time to complete several tasks. He asked for a month's leave to put the matter to the rest. Surely, we let him go. When it had been a month, we found out that he had blocked us on all communication channels. At the same time, we managed to send him a generous fee:) It turned out that in three months of work, he managed to create only a pale imitation of an app. It didn't work at all. So we not only screwed up the app launch but also lost a considerable sum of money. My findingsI admit that this incident is purely our fault. At that time, I hardly could imagine how to hire employees and manage a team properly. Thus, the conclusions from this story are as follows:
Tell me about your experience in hiring workers. Share your stories - it's very interesting to read them! [link] [comments] |
With Tax season coming up, what are some deadlines everyone should remember? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:30 PM PST A lot of people sell online (e-commerce websites), maybe that would be a good one to start with (: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:20 PM PST Evaluating the purchase of a long-standing, hardware supplier of unique electrical components that primarily supplies to sub-contractors, and occasionally direct to military. Nothing new and sexy, but has been in business since the 70s; average revenue is ~$1.5M with a 60% margin. 99% of my current business is B2B, non-governmental/military in nature — seeking this out since the product offerings align vertically with what we do...but new potential revenue streams from aforementioned military business. That said - my biggest concern is around what I don't know or have experience in...dealing with military contracts and likelihood of recurring/ongoing revenue from them. So can anyone with some degree of similarity speak to this? (Hardware/product, not services...small...established) How confident can one be that these long-term revenue streams don't dry up? Thanks in advance. Edit: By "how they work", specifically speaking to if there is anything general that can be inquired about for specifics. Or good ways to perform due diligence — in no way trying to come off as arrogant but answers including having an M&A attorney/broker along, etc etc is not what I am looking for; it's specifically about the military purchasing system or process that I'm trying to gather some info about to become better informed or ask more intelligent/pointed questions for. How do you deal with nuisance customers? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:08 PM PST You know the type. The customer that makes you groan when they walk in. The customer that constantly complains about your products/services but for some reason keeps on coming back. The customer that thinks because they made a purchase they have a right to be an a-hole. How do you guys deal with them while still being professional? [link] [comments] |

How do you calculate shipping cost? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:37 AM PST Okay. Context: I am from Thailand and I want to export stuff to the Philippines. Can any of you guide me through what I need to know and do? I can research the "what I need to know" part myself, but the pricing is what really piques my interests. I would love to hear firsthand experience from you. How do I know how much I should charge per product? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
PPP loan for S-Corp calculated on payroll only or profits too? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:32 PM PST I run an LLC taxed as an S-corp. I pay myself salary and also take profits each year. I applied for the PPP loan earlier this year, calculating the amount at 2.5 months of payroll. But that didn't include the profits I took from the company. I'm seeing all this about owner compensation, but I'm not sure I understand it. Should I have included 2.5 months of my profits in the amount of the loan? And if so, is it too late to go back and change the loan I got back in Q2? [link] [comments] |
Best company type for creating an app "business"? [UK] Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:12 AM PST I am a new independant mobile app developer and want to create a business front in order to avoid using my real name on the app store for a variety of reasons. I would need to obtain a DUNS number and after reading about the different ways to register a business on the UK government website I am more confused than ever. It is a stupid questions but which type of business allows for better protection if sued? This is highly unlikely but I am just trying to prepare for all possible pitfalls. I know that as a Sole trader I would be liable for all loses, but if it is a a company separate from me, I have more wriggle room for things like bankruptcy, is this correct? I will be the sole person operating this "business" and it would be 100% online, so I really don't know what to pick :/ The reason I ask this is because I have heard some really bad experiences of indie app developers being sued (especially in the US!). I have not stolen any code or images, my work is 100% my own, but I am worried that even a legal proceeding would end up with me losing money. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:46 PM PST I was wondering about Payroll Funding/Financing, how does an establishments company go about this? Is there a such thing as this, or do you just get a normal business line of credit and save it for a rainy day to use for payroll? What companies are easiest to get approved for these type of line of credit ? [link] [comments] |
Physical Address for fully online small business Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:16 PM PST I'm in the process of creating a small business which sells online courses. It's fully online - no physical storefront or product. I've been spending more time away from home (California) and am wondering whether I can make things easier and more flexible for myself. Is it necessary to have a business license in a specific state? For documents and physical mail, could I just use a virtual office and have them forward to me wherever I happen to be? LLC from out of state question Posted: 28 Dec 2020 10:36 PM PST Hi all, I live in Arizona but want to get an LLC from New Mexico for the low annual costs + not having to use my personal address which would be public info. This is for a freelancing business where I'll be offering marketing services to businesses in the US. I have no physical business location or employees. I currently don't have a client in Arizona; my question is do I have to register the LLC as a foreign LLC in Arizona? Or can I simply register the LLC in New Mexico and conduct my business as usual living in Arizona? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:20 AM PST To the point: 19 y/o guy in college for nursing. Mom pitched the idea of a painting business to which I shrugged off and then was like "damn, wait a minute". Service isn't going anywhere. I've realized it's (extremely unlikely) an app or software or startup is going to make me a sustainable living. Instead, it's pure, hard work, which I have no problem with. So I've set a budget of $500, my mom has an LLC from a business of hers that she didn't get the chance to pursue, and I live in South FL. I've painted our house, sure. But I wouldn't even consider myself a novice. Point I'm trying to make is I don't think I know how to paint well enough to satisfy the common residential customer. I want to learn, but aside from YT videos, I have no exp but I do have a supportive family, my $500 budget (can easily go far over) and lots of drive. I guess I just wanted to put this in this sub to see who would reply with what. Is painting even profitable anymore? DIY is the bees knees and everyone watches too much HGTV thinking they're Bob the Builder so I don't even know if there's a strong demand for it. I'd start out residential, but I'd like to do commercial as well. Any advice, please. Cost of materials, can I purchase directly from the manufacturer, etc. Credit score is around 730, no debt until atleast 2025. Give me a day in your life, and if you think it's remotely plausible I operate this sort of business while in school. I know this is hard work but hey, might as well do something while I can. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:37 PM PST Hi. I've been planning to start a small business selling clothes from some brands I like that do b2b and use wholesalers but I've been stuck for a few reasons. I dont know which business model to use. LLC or sole proprietorship? I want to use a sole proprietorship but what if I fail. I have no assets to dissolve if that happens. What permits and licenses would I need if I work from home and sell online or go to a flea market to sell. Which do I get first when it comes to permits and such. If it doesnt go well how do I end my business without being in severe debt? I have more questions but everytime I feel I got closer with a solution for everything a million more problems come up. Would appreciate some answer and feedback. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Recommendations for home goods Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:55 PM PST Hey- I just bought a home and am looking for small businesses that you would recommend buying decor/furniture/anything home-related from for a first time home buyer. I want to support small businesses with this home purchase because I know they're struggling. I'm going for a pretty theme, flowers and lots of white and light blue. I love sparkle and would say it's close to French country but less rustic and more sparkly/floral/colorful. And also please comment if you know something I will need but may be overlooking when buying supplies. [link] [comments] |

Picking up own LTL freight at bonded warehouse? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:49 PM PST I got a quote on freightos that was too good to pass up. The only catch is that this freight forwarder would have charged $500+ for final delivery (< 2 cubic meters of cargo, ~1500 pounds, and I live about 50 miles from the port). Other freight forwarders were quoting ~$250 for final delivery, but were charging a lot more for Origin charges. Instead, I'm planning on driving up there and picking it up myself. Is this a terrible idea? Are bonded warehouses more inland, or right next to the port? (I don't want to go anywhere near the port of long beach/port of los angeles). My previous shipment was door-to-door, and it worked out fine. But I'm really trying to get my costs down. Door-to-port seems like it might help. [link] [comments] |
What is the average shipping time for Alibaba? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:56 PM PST I am looking to buy something and there are different shipping options. All of the shipping arrival times are around 4-15 days like with using Express UPS Saver(WTD). How realistic are these arrival times? Will it arrive within this time or is this wrong information?
