How much of auto insurance is determined by car value?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:34 PM PST

I will be getting a new car within the next 3 months or so, the value of which has the potential to be up to $70K. I've not owned a car in my adult life due to living in New York City, but will be relocation to Los Angeles soon, and so I don't have context for how insurance is typically priced.

As the headline asks - how much of an insurance premium is determined by the car's value? I have the opportunity to get a car worth up to $70K, though I've found several great options for sub $50K. Getting a higher-end luxury car would be nice, but at what point am I just setting myself up to pay higher insurance?

I realize there are many factors that go into an insurance premium, but just looking for any wisdom on how they are typically priced when comparing various car values. Thanks!

[AZ] Insurance company said I’m responsible for water damage? Maybe?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:07 PM PST

R/legaladvice told me I should cross post here. So... here goes.

My wife and I just sold our old house, but the new one (we moved across town) wasn't ready until a couple of days after the closing date, so we leased our house back for three days. On day 2, our movers came for our stuff.

In the morning, before they arrived, I closed both valves behind our washing machine. The movers disconnected the hoses for us later, and we went with them to the new house to help unload our stuff. When we came back for the next load, I walked in to find our ceiling leaking. Turns out that we had a faulty hot water valve that, despite being in the fully-closed position, leaked out through the ball and dropped into the wall.

A remediation guy came out the next day to check everything out, and found moisture in the ceiling. He said it would be about $1,500 to fix it, but informed us that since we were basically tenants, the new owners would have to go through their insurance. I spoke with the new owners later that night, and gave a verbal agreement to give them $800 towards the cost of their deductible. They called me back later, stating that they didn't want to use insurance, instead going straight through the guy, and asked us to pay the full $1,500.

It's worth noting, since they kept quoting it, that part of the leaseback is the phrase "property will be returned to the owners in the condition it was received." Also that all communications were done over the phone, so other than the call logs, I have no record of these conversations.

They mentioned small-claims, at which point we stopped talking to them and consulted a local real estate lawyer. He said, based on what we told him, we weren't liable as we had no way of knowing the valve was bad and we didn't disconnect the hoses. It's been radio silence from the new homeowners until yesterday, when we got a letter from their insurance company.

It basically stated that the damages were now up to ~$3K, and that they decided that we were liable. They're asking for the money by the end of the month, and suggested that they may take further action if they don't get it.

    My questions are:

Do we take this straight to our insurance company? Or should we talk to the lawyer again?

Is this letter a scare tactic? The wording makes it sound like they're just asking with scary language.

    Old policy from 1960

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:05 PM PST

Hello. My friend has several old policies and was trying to see if they're worth anything or can be cashed in. His parents took them out on him when he was a child. He is still living but both parents are dead. I've been googling and found nothing. Hoping to get some help here. Thank you.

An angry driver kicked my car and left a dent. Do I settle this through my insurance or small claims?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:56 AM PST

    [CA]

The driver in front of me wasn't paying attention so I honked when the traffic lights turned green. He got angry, got out of his vehicle, kick my car and drove off. I recorded everything on dash cam and gave my local police department the footage with his license plate number.

I called the police department and they said they would contact me if they find the guy. I don't think they're going to do anything about this case.

Do I settle this through my own insurance or do I ask the police department information about that guy so I can file in small claims?

If I do settle this through my insurance, would my rates increase?

    Thanks

How do I find better rates for car insurance?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 04:16 AM PST

My husband said we should look around.. Seems expensive to him. . Right now we have Geico. I'm 49F, clean license, no points, my husband is 49M but doesn't drive (weird European.. Doesnt have a license). We also have a 1M umbrella policy.

All of the sites that compare insurance seem to be scams or you have to enter your personal info and they will call you forever.

Are there brokers for this? Or is there a company someone can tell me to look at? A website?

    Can’t Make this up.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 04:00 AM PST

At my ex wife house (Delaware) visiting my kids for a birthday party and my girlfriend, 40, (a Maryland resident) without me knowing went to move it out of the way for other vehicles. She started it and didn't have it in neutral or parking brake on and released the clutch. The car parked right in front of garage door naturally moved forward going through my ex wife's garage door. Luckily no one was hurt. Garage door is ruined and my car is fine other than cosmetic damage.

Will her insurance cover it all? She has full coverage (State Farm) She is not my on insurance. I hope not to use mine as I was involved in at fault single car accident where i Injured myself. My insurance didn't renew my policy and I am now with a high risk insurance that I pay high rate on.

Should I ask my ex to use her home insurance? Should I pay out pocket? Any scenario without me using my insurance?

I feel like my insurance adjustor isn't trying to do anything for my case. What should I do?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 03:39 AM PST

So long story short, I live in California and I got into an accident at a blind intersection. I told my adjustor everything, including the fact that the other party cannot see and has a license restriction for corrective lenses and I had to take photos of my license and insurance for him. After I told my adjustor this, he responded "The officer didn't make any mention of it, nothing I can do." maybe that's the case but I'm not 100% sure. My adjustor also didn't want any photos of the intersection, or the other persons car. He just looked at my car and before he even contacted the other insurance said I was at fault because I wasn't T-boned.

The final thing is that from my understanding, if I use their recommended towing company they have to pay 'a reasonable amount' for towing fees, no matter the coverage you have. But he told me I will not get any part of the tow covered because I didn't have Roadside Assistance. Any clarification on that would be great, because I currently have a very large bill from them because this AAA authorized tow yard said I needed approval from my insurance before I could go to the vehicle, only for my adjustor to say "I don't care, its not my car."

Is he following California laws correctly? If he is, that's fine, just sucks for me. But if not, how would I proceed?

BEING SUES FOR 90K- CAR ACCIDENT NEED ADVICE

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:11 PM PST

So almost 2 years ago, I got into a minor fender bender in a turn right lane while driving my boyfriend car. The guy I hit was on his phone and I ended up hitting him from behind. The passenger of the car was already on disability and went to the hospital while the driver was completely fine and the wreck was determined by the police officer to be mutual fault.

Now I know how insurance works, I am simply at fault according to them because I hit the other party from behind so I am willing to accept that. Almost 2 years later I am phoned by my boyfriends insurance asking me all sorts of questions. They inform me they are going to accept the passengers claim and payout 50k and deny the drivers due to (small tissue strain/whiplash.) They then ask if I knew my parents car insurance at the time to take the remaining claim. I was 20 at the time of the wreck and did not live with my parents nor was I on their car insurance. I was very confused and even offered up my own insurance but my boyfriends insurance rep was not interested.

About a month later I receive a letter saying the settlement of 50k was paid out to the wife & that I could no longer be perused by her. But now I received a lawsuit saying i'm being sued personally for nearly 90k for both the husband and wife. I really don't know what to do. I've called my boyfriends insurance, sent them all the documents and I was assured it would be looked over by their legal team.

Do I need a lawyer? Should I call my insurance? What is some advice on my next steps? Will I have to go to court? I am a college student, living in an apartment and my only assets is my extremely old car & my small savings account and am extremely scared of being in financial ruin.

Driver with no insurance and in rented car hit me... what do a do?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:52 PM PST

So the accident happened two days ago, I just got the call from my insurance company. The insurance information he gave me was not accurate. I am an idiot who got one-way insurance, so they won't help me fix my car. I have his cell phone # which is accurate, and my insurance (progressive) got his name and other info now. He also hit another car as well. We found out today that he was renting through enterprise and his insurance was not active. My insurance said that they are going to contact enterprise, but have no idea what's going to happen. I have no idea what to do in this situation, I just cleared my savings to fix my car a month ago and now this happens. This all happened in AZ

Sorry for the jumbled post, my brain is very scattered right now.

Due with baby one week after policy period ends...

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:28 PM PST

    In Texas..

I am currently a teacher and have insurance through my school (public charter school - insurance is BCBS). I am pregnant and due August 7. Open enrollment is happening right now for us and our policy will last until July 31. My question is basically, WHAT DO I DO? What type of insurance should I get now for all the appointments, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc? Should I get an FSA or HSA? Will these roll over?

What is the best option for me right now?

Vehicle totaled, offer from insurance is low

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:11 PM PST

My insurance is trying to call my vehicle a total loss. They offered me 50% of what comparable vehicles are selling for in my area. Furthermore, my vehicle had a lot of aftermarket features installed, which should further increase the value above market value for just the vehicle year/type/condition.

I paid out of pocket to have an appraisal done, and my insurance conducted their own appraisal, but even so the amount they are offering cannot buy like kind and quality.

What more steps can I take to get my insurance to come up with a more appropriate offer?

    TIA. In CA.

Has Cigna insurance broken the law with my claims?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:27 PM PST

I'm in the USA in the state of Georgia. Long story short, I got Cigna Open Access Plus (PPO) through my employer. I pay about $160 bi-weekly. $2,500 deductible for medical and $4,500 out-of-pocket deductible.

A home sleep study was requested by my doctor. Cigna paid for half of the home study and I paid for the other half. My doctor wasn't satisfied with the 13 apneas/hour results. I'm a 38 year old healthy and muscular male at 5'8 and 160 pounds. He was iffy on obstructive sleep apnea, so he wanted me to have an in-lab study. Cigna denied coverage for the in-lab study and I got a letter from their medical director that basically said that it "is obvious from the home sleep study that obstructive sleep apnea is present and no further studying is needed." It went on to say that treatment could be via CPAP.

Well, I paid out-of-pocket for that in-lab sleep study. CPAP did not work in the lab. I had some sort of out-of-body experience and felt like I floated up to the ceiling. The sleep tech immediately switched me over to BiLevel and that feeling went away. The titration study revealed 29 central apneas, 0 obstructive, 0 mixed.

Diagnosis in the titration study was "Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome controlled with BiPap. Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome complicated use of CPAP."

So essentially, Cigna's medical director "guessed" based off from the home sleep study data and everyone knows that home sleep studies are notoriously inaccurate. I expect him to have sense enough to know that if common people know that and he's a doctor. I have the documented claims that Cigna denied for the in-lab study and also the titration study.

So here we are presently. I'm somewhere around $5,000+ out-of-pocket and my $2,500 deductible was met earlier this year. I go to have a procedure (such as an Echocardiogram that my doctor ordered) and they paid like $2,600 of the $2,800+ and I received a bill for over $200. I've had that happen numerous times for 'covered' services and I've met every requirement months ago. Pre-authorization was obtained by my doctor's office.

I'm quite alarmed that their medical director seems to be such a moron. It makes me wonder how many people's lives he is putting at risk with his 'guesses' similar to what he did with me. If my doctor would have listened to their medical director's bs and put me on CPAP, obviously, it would not have worked. Cigna wasn't willing to pay to verify that and their initial answer turned out to be wrong, but it was only found to be wrong when I paid for what they wouldn't pay for. Needless to say, I'm ticked. I have indeed considered legal action against them for their medical director's incompetence. They've half-paid a number of other services that should have been fully covered and I received the other half of the bill that they wouldn't pay, yet when I log in on their site it says "You pay nothing" for all of my deductibles and services.

    18 First Car Accident

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:28 PM PST

So I'm 18 years old and I've owned my car for a little less than 6 months now. I have liability only insurance with high limits and recently got in a wreck today. I was at a stop light, stopped, and rolled into a guys car in front of me. His car has very minor damage to his bumper, almost unnoticeable, and he said he would more than likely not file a claim with my insurance company. Of course my entire front end is destroyed. We did file a police report though and the officer said that my insurance company would be informed of the accident. I also was given a ticket for unsafe starting of a stopped vehicle (a non-moving violation). Does this mean my rates will NOT go up if he chooses NOT to file a claim with my insurance? Also does the fact that I was ticket for a non-moving violation work in my favor? Or will my rates more than likely still go up? I plan on calling my agent tomorrow but I don't even know what I should and shouldn't tell them. This is all new to me and money is an issue so I would like to hopefully get an idea of what to expect if anyone can provide me with any guidance or words of wisdom. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (Kansas)

Inherited property - new insurance policy needed?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST

I inherited a house from a parent and recently submitted the final paperwork for the transfer.

Something that confuses me is that when I called the property insurance earlier to temporarily have the account under the trust, the agent told me that no new policy was needed after the transfer. He said they'll keep the same policy but change the account holder to me.

Is that correct? I was almost certain a new policy would need to be drawn up. This is California if that matters and the insurance company is Farmer's.

How should I go about getting car insurance for the first time in a sort of complicated situation?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST

I'm 23F, currently staying at home in Michigan for the next month. I've gotten a job that starts January 18 and will have me relocating to Tennessee. I'll be moving shortly after the new year, so with some money coming in from my current job I plan to buy my own used car hopefully within the next week (I've been driving my mom's to work while she works from home). I'll only have about $2500 to spend on the car itself, so clearly nothing fancy. I'm gonna go to a used car dealership, as opposed to a private seller, so I can immediately get the title transfer and temporary license plate upon sale. But I really need the car now, before I move, because I need it to get myself down there and because I'll only have so much time after arriving in TN before the job starts.

I've been on my parents' car insurance since I could drive - I'm listed on their declaration page. I've never been pulled over, gotten a ticket, or had any accidents. I think the tricky part here is that I need a temporary MI policy that only lasts a month or 2, until I get to TN and can transfer all of my registration and insurance. How do I do this? What company do I go to for a policy? How do I get insurance on the car at the time that I buy it - because I know I need that to be able to drive it home? I'm just very new to this and would really appreciate some step-by-step help. Thank you for reading, and advice if you have it!

PA: New Federal employee family of 4, which Blue Cross plan would be best?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:46 PM PST

    Hi insurance people:

I am a new Federal employee in Pennsylvania, trying to pick out health benefits. We are overwhelmed by the +40 options, but I think we've narrowed it down to two plans offered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield:

FEP Blue and the Basic plan.

    https://www.fepblue.org/our-plans/compare-plans

These plans offer low/no deductible, at a $3.5K/$5k premium, which is right in the middle of the pack. However, they come with some strict limitations - FEP blue only covers preferred prescription plans, and neither covers non-preferred providers. FEP Blue also puts you on the hook for 30% of generally everything, with a $7,500/$15,0000 opm.

Had hoped to discuss all of this with HR or Blue Cross, but neither have been at all helpful in this decision - the people who do pick up their phones, are only reading the information from their website.

We are generally healthy, with no prior conditions and no ongoing prescriptions. We have two teenage kids, so a trip to the Emergency Room wouldn't be unheard of, but it generally not expected.

Any insight on whether or not either of these plans is a wise choice would be tremendously appreciated.

Do you have to cancel auto insurance (Geico) when lease is up?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:37 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have Geico insurance for my leased car. The lease is up in a few weeks; do I have to cancel the insurance deliberately, or is there a chance that it ends with the lease? I called Geico last week and had a very hard time getting someone on the line, and it's difficult to find information about cancelling my policy online. I figured I would ask before giving it another shot. Thank you so much!

Edit: I'm not getting another car — not leasing or purchasing, I'll just be living car-free. (I'm moving to a pedestrian-friendly city, and the move happens to overlap with the end of my lease). Thanks to all who have replied so far!

how to find cheap auto insurance at 21? i’m very lost

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

My parents bought me a car but in my moms name for insurance reasons. I live away from them in a city and they said if i get in a wreck the insurance company will know i live away and insurance will be 2,600 a year (i have a 2018 buick encore) so i'm only allowed to buy groceries with it and they track where i go with it.

i work from home but i want a physical job and i'm already saving up for a car of my own. will insurance be a lot of i'm under 25? (like over 2000 a year) does the car i get factor into that price? i have a completely clean driving record. i live in Maine, US

How is there such small difference between these 2 car insurance rates?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 01:48 PM PST

Male, 26, kentucky, one wreck in 9 years and 1 speeding ticket. I'm going from a 2017 Hyundai Elantra to a 2013 mustang GT. My insurance agent quoted me at $88.30 a month for full coverage on the mustang, ONLY $8.30 more a month than the Elantra. How it this even remotely possible? The mustang costs over 10k more than the Elantra and, well, it's a mustang. Even the insurance agent was shocked and reran all the details and still got back the same number.

    Car totaled by uninsured driver

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:20 PM PST

Title basically sums it up. I have never had to deal with insurance before so I wanted to get some advice so I don't get taken for a run. Our 2013 Subaru was totaled after a driver with no insurance blew through a red light. Thankfully we have uninsured motorists coverage and an independent witness.

My insurance is saying that I will have to pay a 500 deductible on the car if they consider it totaled. Is this standard practice? This seems pretty messed up since it was not our fault.

My wife has wip lash and got a bit banged up. Will uninsured coverage compensate her for pain and suffering/ and medical bills she receives?

I am really worried my insurance is going to try to low ball me on everything so I just want to get an idea of what to expect. I have MetLife if it matters. Any advice is appreciated!

    I am in Washington state.

Advice for appealing a claim on health insurance, please.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:18 PM PST

    Location: Idaho, USA

I went to a medical clinic seeking an elective procedure that I had researched in advance and knew was covered 100% by my insurance. The clinic talked me into getting a different procedure without me realizing it, so the procedure that I actually had done was only covered 80% by my insurance. Since I signed papers saying that I knew what procedure I was getting (I thought I understood, but I didn't), my only hope is to appeal the claim with my insurance company and convince them to cover the procedure at 100% instead of 80%. Does anyone have some advice on how I could argue a compelling case to change the coverage? I don't want to lie, so I can't say that my insurance gave me false information about my benefits or anything. Does anyone know of any reason why an insurance company would change a claim due to their client misunderstanding what they were having done? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't see any downside seeing as I get a free one month trail. But I was just wondering if anyone has heard of it seeing as ya'll have more expertise in this field than myself.
