    Biggest Startup Exits in 2020

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:27 AM PST

This list is based on research I made for a YouTube video. If you prefer to see it as a video instead it is available here.

This list shows the biggest Startup acquisitions based on publicly available acquisition prices. Some of them are older and not really Startups anymore, but they are big exits and made the list. Research is based on multiple online sources and ended on December 28th of 2020. If I missed some deals please let me know in the comments.

    Price Company Buyer Founded
    #1 $40 Billion ARM Nvidia 1990
    #2 $35 Billion Xilinx AMD 1984
    #3 $27.7 Billion Slack Salesforce 2009
    #4 $13 Billion Etrade Morgan Stanley 1982
    #5 $10 Billion Inphi Marvell Tech. 2000
    #6 $7.1 Billion Credit Karma Intuit 2007
    #7 $6.9 Billion Mellanox Nvidia 1999
    #8 $5.3 Billion Plaid VISA 2013
    #9 $5 Billion Veeam Insight Venture 2006
    #10 $3.5 Billion Pluralsight Vista Equity 2004

    Observations and Comments

NVidia - Nvidia is the only company featured twice on the list. They acquired companies for a total of $46.9 billion in 2020.

Age - It takes a while to build a very valuable company. The youngest company on the list is Plaid that is only 7 years old, which is incredibly fast. The average age of the companies on this list is 20.6 years.

B2B vs. B2C - There are very few consumer-facing companies on the list. Basically 2 companies Etrade and Credit Karma. Credit Karma is a free app where what is sold isn't paid by the users directly, but rather the lead generating and advertising model for bank and credit card providers. Basically, Etrade is the only company on the list that consumers actually buy something directly from.

Geography - 9 out of 10 companies are based in the US and 7 out of 10 are in Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley really shows its strength with such a presence on the list.

Forming an LLC as a Foreign Person in Delaware, Taxes and NRA Withholding - Need Help

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:36 PM PST

    Hello,

Can I form an LLC in Delaware as a Non-Resident Alien (NRA) for signing recording agreement with a record label on my behalf (I'm a music artist), publishing music and collecting royalty from US-based PRO or Performing Rights Organisation like BMI (In other words - do business) and not pay the 30% NRA Withholding tax?

Currently, I distribute music independently through an aggregator and the final withdrawal amount in my PayPal is always = the actual amount minus PayPal fee and the 30% NRA Withholding which reduces the amount substantially.

If I create a US business bank account for my LLC and receive my earnings there, will I be able to waive the NRA Withholding tax? If so, how will I take money out for personal expenses to my personal bank account in my home country, do I just give myself a salary every month? Will that salary amount be liable to 30% tax?

My country is mentioned in the United States Income Tax Treaties.

    Thank you.

P.S. I am a music person and don't have much business/legal knowledge, any help regarding the issue would be really awesome.

how to value a possible partnership?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:14 AM PST

okay, using my throwaway for obvious reasons.

I'm a foreigner, living in asia. during my last business (which didnt went very well) i've found a huge market gap here which i'm developing right now. it is related to importing certain goods.

I've set up everything needed in the last few weeks, including a few job ads in the exporting country (my homecountry) that i"m looking for someone who does the logistic part there for me.

through this channel i got a few emails with partnership possibilities. one certain guy is very impatient in joining in.

i can understand that, as its basically a bulletproof business idea. i'm not good at handling money, dont have a degree in a business related field, but i know how to bring money home.

we are talking about a estimated 6 digit profit in the first year with possible 7 digit numbers if we expand at the right time.

ihave a local business partner who takes care of the import-process and i'm basically the connecting piece between those two parts. i handselect and buy the goods too.

how could i value this possible partnership? for obvious reasons i won't share my business with someone else for free. but i just have no idea what kind of number i should tell the guy at the zoom meeting tomorrow. he is highly qualified, has a master in business administration and experience in export.

Long shot, not even sure I should be posting this but how would you go about this?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:49 AM PST

Hi all. First off, throwaway for obvious reasons. I am inexperienced in terms of business and investing as I am very young, and would appreciate any insight.

Recently, thanks to personal connections with a mining company, myself and a partner (more like mentor that took me under his wing, who is basically asking me to deal with this) managed to obtain a few hundred tonnes of high quality metal bars (I won't say which type) at a very low price. About five tonnes is sitting in an offshore warehouse (neighbouring country) and the rest is in its origin country. I own a share of this metal, and would profit greatly if we successfully offload all of it.

Where do I even start with finding potential consumers? I am aware of the metals applications, so should I simply approach the nearest company/industry/individual that can make use of it? I assume my mentor/partner has already attempted this, otherwise they likely wouldn't be ask me to search for and vet potential consumers. They have many more connections than I do, so I am assuming this is no easy task.

I apologise for sounding so clueless, but this is the first time I've ever dealt with anything like this. I have zero experience in this field and am overall under qualified and uncertified as an individual. The only experience with making money I have at all is buying BTC.....

A shot at something interesting for startups/businesses

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 09:21 AM PST

I want some actual business investors and entrepreneurs to have a gander at this idea I am working on, which basically automates certain processes of a business. It also makes it easier to deliver your products since the thing it automates is the entire operations of a company. Not only, would you be quicker, but the speed of your operations would be a direct cause of better communications and data flow. Every company has teams or groups of people which are entitled to do a certain task, but this product will just make it a much manageable, inclusive, easy, quick, efficient and consumer-focused experience, very much like a platform. Do let me know, if you might be willing to give it a shot.
