    Leaving B4 !!!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:10 AM PST

I can't believe my time to post this has come. After 1.3 years at B4 i'm finally leaving! I got my CPA license approved last week so i'm also officially a CPA !!!

Obligatory details about the new gig: 20% pay bump, stock options (tech startup), lots of opportunities for growth, good benefits.

Putting in my two weeks after the break. Won't have to deal with 6 month busy seasons or client bullshit. Don't let people tell you you have to be at B4 at least 3 years to be successful, find your own path!

Regret being an accountant and being born?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:58 PM PST

I took an accounting degree because it was a 'safe and stable' career but I do not enjoy it at all. I got my degree and joined a big 6 accounting firm and was surrounded by extraverted, social go getters while I just want to do my job and fuck off. I couldn't get along with my team outside of work because I do not care about their inane conversions about sports, movies or celebrities. They look at me weird when I say we should eat cheap food for lunch and when I don't join them for getting overpriced bubble tea. Food is just temporary escpiasm and fuel for the body, you don't need to eat expensive food or drink expensive drinks. It's just a trick on your brain.

Most of my colleagues were bright eyed and ambitious, thinking of jumping to the big 4 or becoming a manager while I can't even bring myself to do any work and hate being born.

Now I'm in corporate and it's not any better. Instead of young bright eyed folks, I'm stuck with boomers who only talk about their kids or compare me with their kids telling me how much better their kids are.

Unlike other people, I am unable to have hobbies, enjoy things, have relationships or look forward to things. I tried basketball, soccer, football, baseball, jogging, going to the gym, watching movies, watching television shows, snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, travelling, cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, rock climbing, cycling, learning an instrument, video games, tabletop games, and more but I never enjoyed myself. I was always forcing myself to do things and only convinced myself that I enjoyed them as a form of post purchase rationalization.

I wish I wasn't born into this world just to end up as a wage slave.

    CPA BC PERT EVR TIPS

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:31 PM PST

So I thought I would share my tips regarding PERT reports from my experience as I'm seeing many of my friends struggling to complete this part of CPA Journey.

About my case: - My PERT got approved after 4 reports: 1 Previous report (AP/AR) + 3 reports (1 junior role, 1 senior role and 1 final at the same senior role). I know some people did 7 reports and still haven't got approved, so you want to play along their "game".

    • Sometimes I was late for my mentor reviews (around a few weeks), but they don't seem to care much.

    • I'm not a great writer (not even close) so if I can do it, you will def get thru this!

GENERAL TIPS: - You have to do mentor reviews every 6 months otherwise they will likely to degrade your reports or worse not approving it (I know ppl got degraded because of this)

    • Get your mentor/manager to help you when you can't think of an example for particular questions.

    • When you start to submit your reports, keep it going, don't delay it for too long.

    • REMEMBER: your next PERT report needs to be better than the previous ones. Believe me on this, my friend submitted a bs one just for the sake of it and the reviewer went back to her previous reports and degraded her levels (from level 1 to 0, level 2 to 1) LOL

    • You want to show the PROGRESS in your reports. So although right now you may have all the experience tha meets their requirements now but keep some of them for future reports. You should do at least 3 reports after your previous experience report (if you are lucky, you will get approved in the 3rd report)

    • 1st report: try to hit all the technical and enabling competencies that you can think of. In my case, I did all the FR, all management and 1 audit. Write about: explain in details of your tasks based on their vague examples; include audiences/stakeholder's value; action you took; etc.

Tips: * Set the bar low in your first report, so you can show my of your progress in the next one. You don't want to give them everything, because the next report you will have less stuffs to write about and they have higher expectations now. In my case, it was a Junior role.

    • I opened my job descriptions/task lists at my work and add more details, but not too much

You will likely to get 2-4 level 1 here.

    • 2nd report: based on the first one but you MUST addressing the reviewer's notes, if they say you need to include the handbook section, include it. Give more details based on your examples in 1st report unless they say your examples are too simple and need complexity.

For Enabling in 2nd report: *** Search CPA Values, then include them in your second report but again. For examples: integrity, competence. You should say something like, e.g. I created this new report for sales manager to address... this shows my competence and integrity to ... which improves the company's cashflow... reduces mistakes...

For technical, i included some CPA values in the "action/result" part of the examples.

You will likely to get 1-3 level 2 here with some more level 1.

    • 3rd report: same as 2nd report but with more details. I remember i write at least 1.5-2 pages for each question here. Every single para in Enabling, I conclude: this shows CPA Values which are:... by doing this and that; management are happy with my actions, ...

In this final report, give more than just than just one example, for example in FR competency, they want: debt covenant, note disclosures, give them your work experience, e.g. I prepared note disclosures such as assets dep term...looked into last year...to ensure....This shows... I also updated debt covenant by...communicate with banks...to ensure...this shows

You need to ensure you have enough depth and complex examples in this final report (see below for more tips).

    WRITING TIPS:

    • Tips for adding complexity to your reports in 2nd and 3rd report. Give examples when you are super busy:
    • cover someone's work under year end/audit pressure;
    • Management needs something immediately;
    • important stakeholders: bank => affect covenants, cashflow of the company
    • first time doing the task, no direction, have to figure out by yourself

    • Use STAR method (separate into diff sections: Situation:...., Task:...., etc.), include specific details such as

    • be specific, e.g. deadlines - how many days, when, year end?

    • actions you did, what happened if you didn't do?

    • alternative actions

    • what did you learn?

    • Enabling competencies: GOOGLE GOOGLE GOODLE! For example about team work, just googled "how to effectively improve team work skills", then write and apply in your example based on the articles, apply adding your own notes, make it more complex (above).

    How to resign? B4

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:26 PM PST

I'm an A2 in It Audit. I would be heading into the rush of busy season for my 10k client, but instead I have an IRS Revenue Agent Job starting 2/16 and am planning to resign on 1/4 after the holiday break.

I do really like my current team and manager, I just want to move on from my current city and life. Any tips on how to resign? I was thinking I would put something on my manager's calendar that morning and then try to get my director/partner? Not sure how it works. I don't talk to my coach very much. When does HR get involved?

Going to give notice on 1/4 and have two weeks

I’m currently an undergrad student taking the accounting major path at my university and had a genuine question for CPA’s and accountants in general.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 09:24 PM PST

First off, which did you find easier, financial or managerial accounting? And second, is it worth it to become a CPA if I don't want to work at a Big4 firm?

    What’s the purpose of 150?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:25 PM PST

Why do you need 150 units to get the cpa license as opposed to the 120 that bachelors degree gives you? What the point of requiring 30 extra units? More student debt? More wasting time in useless classes? Getting a worthless masters degree?

Feeling like I made a big mistake with a new job...advice?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:59 AM PST

Hello all! I've been in the accounting field for a little over 5 years now but I need some advice.

I took a senior accountant position at a private company last month that said they had some trouble this year due to the pandemic but had gotten through it, but that's definitely not the case. They have years of mismanagement trouble and constantly bleeding cash.

I'm starting to wonder if I should keep my eyes open/start applying for other positions at this point, but if I do should I just leave this job off my resume??

I don't really want to up and quit but things look pretty bleak. I have a decent amount of data analytic experience as well as technical accounting but even in my job search it was hard to get this one.
