This "end of pandemic" run is delusional

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST

With the announcement of Pfizer's vaccine, stocks that struggled during the pandemic began to soar while stocks that did well during the pandemic are starting to struggle.

But all of this is delusional. At least in the short term.

It will take a while before we return to normalcy. For that the vaccine needs to be massively distributed first. Which will take time because, you know, logistics, bureaucracy & stuff. Then stuff like travel & outdoor entertainment will only go back to pre covid level way after the vaccine has been massively distributed.

    My advice is, don't FOMO

I'm not saying this because I have positions in "covid stock" (I don't; I currently hold mostly NIO, Palantir, Maxeon and a bit of BABA)

Posted about NIO 6 months ago and got 3 upvotes, today I am posting about PLTR

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 11:55 AM PST

I posted this buy in about NIO 6 months ago and got about 3 upvotes. I'm glad I got in and believed in the long term success of this company. I still hold onto my core positions but have sold my LEAP calls.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/stocks/comments/g69o67/today_i_threw_some_money_at_nio_because_tsla_was/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Today, I am posting about Palantir. Might be a little late posting about this, I bought in around $10 which is their IPO price. Here's a couple reasons why I believe in the long term success of this company.

    • Big name backers like Peter Theil.
    • Big data/AI analysis. I don't own any stocks in this industry aside from your typical FAANG stocks. This is an opportunity to consolidate my positions into a more focused strategy. I also get to invest in government and defense stocks at the same time.
    • Palantir is not just a government and defense stock. Palantir is already expanding to enterprise applications. I believe that this is where our future in society is moving towards. We have made significant progress in technology in the past 20-50 years. We spent so much time and money developing and rushing out newer technologies and in the mad rush we forgot to optimize. There is so much room to use AI and machine learning to figure out where the inefficiencies lies.
    • This kind of proprietary tech has a huge moat. It's not something that any competitor can just come and replicate. Their technology is advanced enough to attract attention from the government and companies like General Motors. Having also worked in the industry, I can tell that their tech is way more advanced than their competitors.

As always, only invest what you can lose and you are ultimately responsible for managing your own risk!

    I screwed up. Big time.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:57 AM PST

After the crash in March, I read lots of talk on here about predictions of a long recovery and how a V shaped recovery wasn't likely. I pulled all of my money out of the market and planned to get back in once things settled down. You know where this story is going.

I'm sitting at 100% cash as the markets hit all time highs. I sat out so long I feel like I can't get back in until there is a major correction or I will lose LOTS of money. I'm in my 40s so we're not talking a few hundys.

I learned many valuable lessons through this, but I'm not sure what to do. It looks like my options are to suck it up and get back in and lose about 25% of my retirement, DCA for awhile, or wait for a major correction and jump back in.

What would you do in my situation?

    TDAmeritrade crashed

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:56 AM PST

TDAmeritrade keeps timing out and giving an error when I try to login.

The authorization server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server.

Looks like it crashed a little after market open. I'm guessing other apps are probably having similar overload issues. One would think they should upgrade their servers.

Which company is most likely to do logistics for the Pfizer vaccin?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 05:23 AM PST

Vaccins need to be transported with a very low temperature at all times. This requires an excellent logistical network. Which company has the best network in place? Is it Cryoport ($CYRX)? This is a small cap stock not even worth $2 bln right now, and I'm wondering whether there are other companies that also have a cold supply chain. Or is there a company in this field that does all logistics for Pfizer?

I'm developing an addiction to stocks (help)

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 07:27 AM PST

    Hello everyone.

I have a problem and it's not the usual problem "i don't know what stock to buy"/"i'm stressed about losing money".

In fact, my issue is that i can't think about anything other than stocks. I spend hours everyday reading quarterly reports, 10-Ks, investor presentations, news articles about the companies i'd like to buy.

When i decide that i like a company, i can't stop watching my broker's account waiting for the price to dip a little so i feel ok at buying it, then if the stock goes up i want to buy more, if it goes down i want to buy even more.

While i'm working (from home), i always keep my PC on so i can keep an eye on what the market is doing and plannig my next action. If i buy a stock and doing that my cash diminish, i immediatly transfer some money from my bank account so my liquidity is restored and i'm ready to buy again. This is hurting my performance at work and i'm always distracted, i go to sleep always late because i NEED to finish reading that 10-K filing.

I started investing like three years ago in a mutual fund, switched 2 years ago to S&P500 ETF and in september i started investing in individual stocks.

And the worst thing is that i'm not even so much concerned about getting rich or earning/losing money...i just want to own that company. This morning i bought some shares of a real estate investment company that build-owns-rents corporate buildings mainly in the city i live, and the thing that i'm thinking about is that next time i'll go downtown, i'll look at those shiny skyscrapers and think "i own a part of them".

So this is it, i just needed to share my thoughts. Thanks for your attention and sorry for the grammar.

I suspect the market will follow a similar pattern to 6/04. One massive green day on good news, followed by another big green day from sheer momentum, then a significant drop as that momentum slows and things correct.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 08:34 AM PST

Getting some real deja vu. I seem to remember 5 months ago we had this same exact thing happening. A vaccine was announced, we had 2-3 ridiculous green days as everyone got hopeful, then once the momentum ran out everything dropped like a rock. Now assuming this vaccine does work at 90%, it does provide more hope that things will recover, which means the drop shouldn't be as significant. But it will likely still happen to a degree.

My advice? Tomorrow will likely be green. Sell and take your huge profits then, even selling half your position if you're not entirely convinced, then DCA into things over the next 1-2 weeks. If Wednesday is green, and it very well could be, be glad you got two out of three days of the runup.

If no drop occurs, there's no shame in profit taking during an extremely volatile period in the market. If you don't want to try timing the market and just want to hold, that's fair too.

Almost all stocks are touching record highs some even crossing their 52 wk highs. The biggest shocks being Oil related- XOM and CVX almost 13% high SU 20% and ENB 7%. Airlines (AC and DAL) are almost 20% up as well. Might as well sell everything rn and buy for a higher price later.

    Hope you didn’t buy today.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST

Today's rally of the vaccine news is the most fake and fragile rally I've seen. Completely blown out of proportion, good job for those who bought over last few months, airlines cinemas cruises etc.

But everyone got carried away with the headline and not reading into the fine print. These results were only on 94 people. They still have no idea on the negative effects of this vaccine. In addition they will only be able to produce 50 million doses by the end of the year. For a 2 dose vaccination that's only 25 million people. This is be like a flu shot too and will need another within a year.

Finally the transportation PFEs vaccine needs to be stored at ridiculously low temperatures this is going to be a logistical nightmare.

This is not the covid news we were waiting on and soon the market will realise this.

Sorry to shit on your parade.

    PTON - will it recover?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 09:33 AM PST

So I am invested heavily in PTON and with the vaccine news it dipped a lot this morning. Will it bounce back after the noise settles down or should I get out of my positions? They reported great earnings so I'm wondering if I should hold for now.

I made my first profitable trade today. Thank you guys

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 11:18 AM PST

Basically the title. I'm a 19 year old college student working part time. I don't have a whole lot of money to put towards investing/trading. I'm pretty new to all of this and I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means. Anyway, I had been interested in stocks for a while, but didn't know where to start. I wouldn't say Reddit is the best place to look, but it was a start. I found this sub and asked questions. I read up on strategies, stock lingo, and I observed discussions that took place here and a few other subs. You guys gave me some solid pointers. Led me to the right places. Gave some recommendations and provided reasoning for why you think/don't think something is worth the time, while also reminding me to take things with a grain of salt

Last week, a few states declared that they would be legalizing weed. I took a look at some cannabis companies and found myself looking at $ACB and $SNDL. Their prices were rather cheap ($4.42 and $0.21, respectively) when I found them. I was a little confused as to why there wasn't much talk about either despite the news. Well, I bought shares in both Wednesday afternoon. The next day, I saw news that ACB had gone up 36%. I was pretty happy with it and sold a few shares and held onto the rest. I waited for prices to go down and bought in again on Friday afternoon. This morning I awoke to find a stop-limit order had been fulfilled and I had made a little over $100. $ACB and $SNDL had both run up quite a considerable amount from when I first bought them, like +150% on both.

Anyhow, thank you guys for being patient with me and my sometimes dumb questions. I have a lot to learn still but I thought it would be wrong if I didn't express my gratitude in some form. Best of luck to everyone during these times. Things are looking good for the positions I have in energy and cannabis atm. Hopefully it stays that way

Who is manufacturing the refrigeration systems for Pfizer?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 08:13 AM PST

Everyone is focused on purely Pfizer with their vaccine but they need to be kept in cooling systems of -94 degrees F. So will Pfizer be manufacturing all of these cooling systems or will another company be in charge of all of this because in my eyes this seems like another business is about to blow up. On top of that Pfizer has announced that they are partnering with UPS to create Mobil freezer farms throughout the U.S so keep an eye on them also. But any ideas on who would be manufacturing them?

What is stopping you from holding Amazon?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 12:26 PM PST

Hi all, I just recently paid off my student loan, and I have a full time job in my field of study. Now that I am finished paying my loan off, I'd like to start investing some of my money. I've been somewhat paying attention to the stock market for the last year and a half, but for the most part it's just been "OMG look at Tesla go to the moon!".

I feel like at this point I'm definitely too uneducated/undisciplined to begin day trading but I'd really like to start building my retirement portfolio.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, why should I not just buy a piece of amazon whenever I can afford to? I keep hearing that diversification is the key to a strong portfolio, but if I'm buying amazon, a company that doesn't seem to be going anywhere, is diversification necessary?

The way I'm looking at it is well they hold so much user data. They're invested in the entertainment I watch, with Prime video, fire stick and twitch, the music I listen to with Prime music and Alexa, what I read with kindle and audible and even the food I eat with Whole Foods. They already have the infrastructure for same/next day delivery and after this year, I imagine delivery services will continue to improve and be more popular. The future of targeted ads scares me lol, an entire generation that grew up online is ready to consume...

Stocks poised to make the biggest comebacks after the COVID crisis.

Believe it or not, one day, COVID will be behind us and we will see certain stocks that were hurt badly by it re-emerge. Outside of the obvious such as stocks in travel, cruise lines, and movie theaters, what are you currently investing in that you know will bounce back? As hard as it is to have confidence in anything right now, what stocks are you placing your confidence?

McDonald’s to test McPlant, which includes a meat-free burger, next year; Beyond Meat shares fall

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 09:51 AM PST

McDonald's will test a meat-free burger in several markets next year as it adds plant-based menu offerings, which it has coined "McPlant."

International President Ian Borden said that McPlant was created "by McDonald's and for McDonald's." Borden said that the McPlant line could also include chicken substitutes.

The company has not yet disclosed the supplier for the line. A company spokesperson declined to identify their supplier but said that McDonald's will not be manufacturing the products.

Shares of Beyond Meat, which made the meat-free patties for McDonald's Canadian test, fell as much as 6% in morning trading on the news. The stock was briefly halted for volatility.

McDonald's began testing a meatless burger, dubbed the P.L.T., in several dozen Ontario restaurants in September last year. By April, the chain had ended the pilot and has since said that it has no plans to bring back its P.L.T. burger at this time.

Former McDonald's CEO Don Thompson, who was an early investor in Beyond, sits on the plant-based meat maker's board. Investors have speculated that the connection between the two companies could mean a long-term partnership and make Beyond a supplier for the largest U.S. restaurant chain by sales.

Other international McDonald's markets have found more success with meatless burgers. Restaurants in Germany, for example, have added veggie burgers made by Nestle to their menus.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors that markets will choose if and when to add McPlant items to their particular country. He added that the exact pace will be dictated by consumer demand.

Rival Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, released a plant-based Whopper in the U.S., with a patty made by privately held Impossible Foods last year.

Shares of McDonald's rose less than 1% in morning trading after the company's third-quarter earnings and revenue topped analyst estimates. The company also released an investor update, predicting systemwide sales growth in the mid-single digits in 2021 and 2022 and sharing more about its strategy for boosting sales.

Beyond is expected to release its third-quarter results after the bell Monday.

Covid Vaccine effects on E-commerce (PYPL, AMZN....)

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 11:39 AM PST

Want to hear what the consensus might be on this topic. What are we thinking the effects a vaccine might have on companies such as PYPL, AMZN, PIN and other stocks that have done well from quarantine. Thoughts on what the immediate future will look like? Not so much AMZN since they're a monstrosity, but smaller ones such as PYPL.

    TDOC is killing me...

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:53 AM PST

First the merger with LVGO, where I didn't manage to sell my LVGO before it got frozen. I had 100 LVGO, that was at around 140, so 14000 USD..which was converted to 59 TDOC and 1100 USD, ... now the 59 TDOC is worth (at the time of this writing), 59*179=10561, so a loss of (10561+1100-14000)/14000=17%...

Why does the vaccine news has to drag it almost 14% today? It is not like corona is over already, and even if it has, telemedicine is gonna stay..

I am tempted to buy more, but it has already become my second biggest stock next to amazon...

Do you think there will be another huge dip before things return to normal?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 12:37 PM PST

The DJIA jumped 1200 points today, which is great. But, COVID cases are at an all-time daily high. One could use the argument that another global shutdown is coming.

Do you see another mass shutdown occuring? I see two reasons for another one not to occur:

    • We know what to expect and how to handle a second one. People might just continue to practice mask-wearing and social distancing despite rapid rising cases and go about their day

    • The recent announcement of Pfizer vaccine success (although the amount of time for continued testing, manufacturing, and distribution would mean quite a while before the general public gets vaccinated)

What are your thoughts? Are you buying, holding, or selling?

    Opinions on my current picks?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 12:23 PM PST

College sophomore working with a $2000 account. Sold my DAL holdings after the rally today and I'm finally in the black (Entered the market the last week of August and got BURNED). This is what I'm in now and why:

$700 in RKT: From what I can tell, seriously undervalued. They've had tremendous growth in the past year and they seem to be leading the way in online morgage tech. Picked this up at 20.50 after getting burned when I first started. Waiting on the earnings call tomorrow.

$750 in NIO: Maybe I'm buying into they hype? Company has gone nowhere but up. If they're able to manufacture a quality EV at the same price as the big 3 then they've got a shot. China is also one of the largest auto markets in the world. While I don't see them succeeding in the American market, I can see growth in China and expansion into Europe.

$500 in COKE: I trust that COKE will be around for the rest of my life. Not really looking to make a killing here but just a safe spot for my money to grow.

Next purchase will be in the semiconductor field (I'll be moving $500-600 in out of savings). EVs are the future and while I don't know who will win that battle, I know everyone will need these materials for manufacturing (least thats my intuition tells me). If any of you have any advice on what to buy or things to improve my trading, I'm here to listen.
