Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:05 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

Can I do this? And how?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:46 PM PST

I've created the software in my spare time (am Sr. Dev/Architect by day), want to roll out to beta, but have no idea how I'm going to make it happen, financially and time-wise.

    Immediate costs I see are:

    1. Infrastructure (AWS currently)
    2. Customer support
    3. Insurance (E&O)

I'm the only one with an income in our family, and I don't see how I could just replace that overnight, even with product in hand. I've thought about looking for investors, but that seems like the absolute wrong move, since one of the biggest things I'm asking for is a salary (and a sizable one at that - Sr. Dev/Architect currently). Of course I would also use investment dollars to market the product and build a team around it, but still, just feels way too early to even consider it, and in the long run I'd rather not take any investment dollars I absolutely didn't have to. (Don't know if this is the right mindset or not)

I could get spouse on board for customer support, which I think would work fine. And I've thought about preselling annual subscriptions, which I believe I could do to cover insurance and infrastructure costs.

But, there's still a laundry list of things that need to be added to the software (it's MVP in every sense of the word). And, marketing, etc. becomes the most important thing to keep the business growing, which I wouldn't have the time to do. I'm sure there are things others may point out that I'm missing as well.

Anyone gone this path? Bootstrapping themselves while still in a day job? Is it feasible? Any advice?

    Resources for finding angel investors

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 09:38 PM PST

Hello r/startups, I am looking for some resources to find angel investors.

We are a SaaS B2B fintech startup in SE Asia currently raising a seed round of $200k. We have an MVP and market validation, now we are looking for angels or VC funding.

Unfortunately I have turned down 2 local investors because of their unscrupulous nature.

I am a member on angel.co, but to be honest, I still can't figure out how the site works. Any info on [free] resources to secure angel investment will be appreciated.

    Thank you

Who would you have on your advisory board?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:11 AM PST

Working with a friend on a FinTech for a specific industry sector. He's putting together an advisory board for both business and product advice.

So far we have * senior person from the professional body for this sector (most of our users will have membership to this body as part of their license to practice) * senior executive from an international accounting firm * a lawyer who specialises in financial matters. * senior employees from two of the companies who will be among our initial customers (we used them for idea and prototype validation).

I think I'd like to add someone with experience in launching start ups but that's pretty broad. What sort of experience should this person have?

What other skills/experience would you add?

I wasn't sure what flair to assign this to but I just have to make a confession I guess. I tried to find mentors in the past, and have failed miserably. Now I'm stuck.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:15 PM PST

I don't know what it is these days but it's hard to talk to people. At least, I've found it hard to have conversations with people before COVID came along. I tried going to meetups, even went to Forbes Under 30 summit a few years ago, and could not form meaningful relationships with a single person.

I thought reading a ton of books would be a good substitute. But everytime I read stuff and try to apply it, I fail miserably. In a nearly endless cycle.

Admittedly, I feel as though I'm stuck and I'm not sure what else to do.

End confession. Thanks for at least reading.

Has anybody hired a copywriter to refine the pitch and website?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:03 AM PST

I am looking to hire a copywriter to help me with my pitch and my website. But I don't have any previous experiences in this and don't want to be taken advantage of. Anybody who has worked with copywriters before, how do they get paid? Is it a pre-defined fixed price, or is it by word, by page? Any advice is appreciated.

Broke college student, don’t know where to start

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 04:30 PM PST

Like the title said, I'm a broke college student that doesn't know where to start. I have a great idea for an app that would be disruptive in a space that hasn't been touched in a while but I'm absolutely not a tech guy. Learning to code is out of the question for me (believe me I've tried lol), I'm basically Jobs looking for my Wozniak. I know nothing about the legalities of business or companies or anything really because I'm just a freshman. I'm super passionate about this and I feel like every minute that passes by is a wasted minute. Where in the world do I start?

Sole Founders dealing with business demands

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 09:03 AM PST

Everything popped this week and things started to get crazy. But - when you have a business that is always online - how do you deal with taking breaks or even going to sleep? This is a good problem to have, but I am exhausted. It's always up-and-running, and I wake up to tons of traffic and contacts from social media. It is getting out of hand.

Anybody else launch by themselves and have to endure the growing pains, feel guilty for having to look away to even sleep?

Do you think people understand the idea of "support" closing overnight - or does it lose finicky users?

Biggest problem so far are email confirmations. I used SendGrid, it misses about 10% of them, and I end up having to manually reach out and get them on. Almost wish I had not done Email Confirmations. Also...some users simply want to know more or want some help doing simple internet-tasks. International users asking if it works in this language or that one, and I end up having to edit their English sections of text so that it doesn't look ridiculous. Even with software that was meant to handle everything...this is my first experience of coding at this scale. It's more hands-on than I intended.

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:06 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

How do you meet other entrepeneuers during in this COVID-19 environment?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 04:33 AM PST

Hi y'all. One of my problems back when I was starting off was I started during COVID-19. But... Couldn't really meet many people cause of the lockdown.

My friend was curious about what I did, to which I said: idk, I just annoyed people on start up slacks and that seemed to work.

So my question I pose: how do you meet others in the community?

How to partner and split the percentages?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:55 AM PST

I came up with an idea for a small start up. Let's call it mobile dog grooming. I currently have a career and have no intentions of leaving said career right away. So, I approached an old friend and mentioned wanting to do the start up. He seemed thrilled and wanted to go into business together.

Here's lies my dilemma. I would put up the collateral and he would be doing the work.

-$10,000 approx for material and equipment including llc etc -$20,000 loan on a van

The friend would be doing all the physical work where I would be the investor and helping the start up. After discussing what he should get paid he mentioned being part owner and getting paid a salary since he would be doing most of the work.

So the question is, how would you suggest the structure of this?

Me: 30k in upfront costs of business and helping create start up. Clearly all the risk financially

Him: Running the business's day to day operations. Salary of 3000 a month.

We would create the LLC together. Sign a non compete.

Should I hire a lawyer to line it all out?

Website Startup - T&C, Privacy Policy etc...

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:30 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I'm working on an MVP for a website at the moment and I'm looking to launch it in a few weeks. nearing the end of development I've now stumbled upon all the legal terms that go with a website. Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, Digital Millennium Copyright Act,

Can anyone give me some guidance on what to include in the website to cover all my bases in terms of policies and any resources I can use to help me with that.

I'm a startup on a low budget. Have you gone through lawyers at this point or draft them up yourself after analyzing different websites?

    Thanks in advance!

How do I ask acquaintances if they can connect me with a potential co-founder? (...)

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST

My previous startup (worked on it for ~8 months) didn't end up working out for a bunch of reasons. The one that I'm most intent on not repeating is picking the wrong co-founder.

    1. I don't have a good network. I've asked several old school/college friends, no one wants to startup in a pandemic, or is happy with their golden handcuffs. Same with old colleagues.

    2. I do have a few good acquaintances though, ex-founders, current founders, investors - though again, I'm not sure how to even approach someone who I may have spoken to only once or twice about getting help finding a co-founder.

    3. I'm active on producthunt and other online indie/saas communities, I've received about 5-6 messages from people wanting to be my co-founder, however I found nearly all of them to be lacking a complementary skillset (actually, all of them were non-tech guys trying to get me to work on their idea and split it 50-50)

Among these, (2) seems to be my best hope. How do I reach out to these individuals (mostly current founders of other companies with whom I shared a coworking space before the pandemic) and ask them if they know anyone else who might be looking for a co-founder like me?

I feel like I can't just blurt that out, out of the blue, to people I haven't spoken to in months.

So, my plan thus far, has been to figure out a way to help them somehow, with hiring, product feedback etc. - so that kind of gives me an in - and then I can try to casually bring it up

"..I'm working on so and so and exploring this and that space, I'm also looking for a co-founder (btw, let me know if you know anyone good) and ...."

Would love to hear any ideas or suggestions :)

Is it worth it to rewrite my entire mobile app code base ?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:45 AM PST

So I'm a student who is trying to launch a startup with some friends from university. I am the only engineer. The app is, technically, a clone of TikTok, we have user video upload and social media stuff. We have received some positive feedback from an incubator and some other companies where interested in our project.

The app has been a WIP for almost a year now. After mostly three months, I was done building it, then it was just a bunch of refining and adding small features. Our architecture is a back-end API with a database, a mobile app and a back-office web app for administrators.

Currently, we are preparing to launch the app as a test version, to try it on few users. Things are getting quite real, and I am super scared of letting other people use the app. The rest of the team obviously used the app before, but not continuously, and there has always been some few bugs. I am afraid the app does not look "professional" enough and users don't like it, especially since it is made for normal people, not businesses. I am not even sure I would personally use it....

So obviously, as the engineer, I need to solve those problem ! But I am not sure I should actually continue to code on the current code base for the mobile app. I am using the Ionic/Angular framework. When I started last year it seemed like a good choice, since I only knew that to build mobile apps. But now, I know how to use React, React-native, and I am also considering learning Flutter. Then, when I am coming back to my app, it feels like really bad code. I really dislike Angular logic now, and Ionic component do not have the most "native" feeling. I encounter problems I would not with a more modern framework. I really feel like I should stop here, and rewrite the app using Flutter. I think it would look cleaner, faster and closer to what a real professional app should look like.

I think it could be possible, in the way that, apart from some bugs, the app is currently working so it would be easy to do testing with real users without having to implement other big features. And in the meantime I would be able to code the Flutter app. No need to change the back-end, so that's already a big thing already done.

Would guys advise me to rewrite the app in Flutter, or continue with what I have ?

Thank you for all your advises !
