Possibly about to get nuked on google reviews due to a vengeful client who i took to court

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

what can i do? I only have two reviews since I just started out. A 1 star would fuck things up quite a bit.

Edit: I worked for this guy for over 3 weeks (23 working days to be exact), many days involving 9-10 hours, many evenings, two weekends too. I worked in the rain and mud, outdoors, and in the hot summer sun. I was paid for 5 days of work or about $1000 for 23 days of work. Do the math.

    The reason?

The owner cheaped out and would not spend the money to buy new materials and so 10+ year old building materials had to be reused. There was a defect in many of the materials that caused problems during construction. I was blamed for it despite demonstrating my ability in another similar project, which I showcased to the Judge/Adjudicator. This was ignored. I tried to explain why this happened but not being able to make a video (since I didn't have access to the job site anymore nor the defective materials) made it difficult to illustrate to someone with zero experience in contracting. Ultimately I was blamed for something that was out of my control. I contacted the manufacturer who agreed with me over the phone but would not put it in writing (as you can imagine why) despite me reaching out 3 times. I could not use this as evidence.

As a result, not only did I work a physically demanding job outdoors for over 3 weeks with many OT hours lifting 75 lb blocks for nothing, I LOST $2000 after all is said and done because most of that labor didn't count according to the Judge/Adjudicator. I can appeal it but that will cost more money and at this point I am not confident that I can win with these people who have no idea what's going on.

To add: this guy asked me to be his delivery boy for him for free because I had a truck and he didn't. He also had me cut concrete for him with my saw because I had one and he didn't, again for free. He pressured me to work weekends and evenings. I ended up getting paid $1000 for 23 days of work. That's less than $50 a day. That's BEFORE expenses like $400 of gas, $600 of dump fees, $3000 of machienry fees. He was also telling me about his one year old BMW in addition to his Accura. Fucking asshole.

Starting a business NOW. Good idea?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:08 AM PST

Ive been on temporary layoff since April 1st and have been teaching myself some new skills in the leather craft arena. I haven't really sold much of anything yet, mostly just gifting my creations but there is starting to be a groundswell around some of the products.

I've invested THOUSANDS of dollars on this side hobby and my question is, can I recoup some of that money by starting a legitimate businesses this year and taking such a big loss. Would I be able to claim the same investments whenever I decide to start a business? Say 2022 for arguments sake.

I could really see this becoming a side income and it seems like a waste to let all this money just get sank and not leverage it if it's possible to.

    LinkedIn for small business hiring

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:17 AM PST

    HI All,

I am working on creating a platform that, for the lack of a better comparison, works like LinkedIn but only for small businesses.

    What does that mean?

    As an employee seeking jobs:

    1. Get access to platform based on some entry crtierion (at least have x years of experience, at least have Y referrals from older employers)
    2. Create profile
    3. Seek and publish referral from older employees
    4. Express interest in companies / openings that are relevant

    As an employer:

    1. Create business profile
    2. Create job openings
    3. Endorse and share reviews on employees that have worked with them in the past
    4. Contact other businesses for reference checks on potential employees

    Question for this group:

    1. Does this help ease (at least a little) the challenge of hiring the right talent?
    2. As a small business, what information is critical in making the hiring decisions? And is an online platform like the above a good solution?
    3. Is this something that you would use to seek employees or seek jobs?
    4. Any other feedback is most welcome.

    Thoughts on bonus incentives

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:41 AM PST

So I have seasonally and hourly employees whom I employ for about 5 months.

This year I tried a bonus in entice to fix the following issues: 1. Showing up late 2. Not showing up at all 3. Decrease amount of call outs

These goals were all accomplished. I'm finding however, some employees who got the bonus are stoked (ofc) and the ones who didn't seem to be upset.

They all signed an employee contract on what was expected from them and stating that the bonus was for people who go above and beyond, not just simply show up at work and do their job as expected bc that's what the hourly wage is for.

I'm not sure how to fix this, because I don't want the kids thinking poorly about themselves, just constructively wanting to improve their work efforts. Any ideas on how to overcome this would be greatly appreciated.

Payroll Question - What am I missing?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:11 AM PST

tldr: why would anyone pay an employee in just cash under the table?

I manage a small US business with 3x employees and one of them recently came to us and said his friend is doing the same job and getting paid in cash under the table and asked if we can do the same thing (the owner definitely won't). I understand why an employee might want that arrangement (despite the long term impacts on SS, UI, etc.), but why would any employer do it from an economics perspective?

Besides the penalties, jail time, etc. doesn't the economics of this also still work out poorly for the business since they presumably wouldn't be deducting those cash payments as expenses now? We are in an industry exempt from worker's comp, so that also isn't in play here, but is that the thing that tips it over? Wouldn't an employer be better off paying the payroll taxes and then deducting the expenses in every other case?

buy truck in corporate name since I have extra money in that account?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:34 PM PST

so, I'm needing a newer truck for work, I have money just building up in my corporate bank account, since the taxes are cheaper I don't pay it out all to myself, now normally I would buy this truck in my personal name but since I have enough extra money in my corporate bank account, I'm thinking why not just buy it under the companies name. now since I'm the owner and 90% of the time the only employee the insurance may be more expensive under this name, is really why I'd usually buy it in my name.

is there perhaps some way I can buy it under the corporate name and then "gift" it to me, or sell it for $1 or is there any loop holes liek this? or if anybody has information on corporate vs personal work vehicles. |

and I would be buying it straight out, not financing. also I'm in Canada, so some matters may differ, but give me all the info you have thanks all.

    SEO Recommendations for Black Friday

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:44 AM PST

Google recently shared a list of best practices ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to ensure maximum visibility, according to Search Engine Journal. These recommendations help Google understand and surface sales events in search results.

    1. Use permanent URLs. Use recurring URLs for Black Friday landing pages rather than creating new URLs each year. Google recommends this because re-used URLs allow sites to build link equity (the quality of a link gained when other pages link to it, which is accumulated over time).
    2. Publish Early. This allows enough time for Google to discover the links and index them
    3. Follow SEO Best Practices. This speaks for itself.
    4. Build internal links. Link to this landing page from other pages (including the homepage) to communicate the importance to Google and help visitors find the page faster.
    5. Include a high-quality image.
    6. Get the landing page recrawled. When you perform major updates on the Black Friday page ask Google to recrawl the page to get your updates indexed more quickly.

Started a small rendering business, where to go from here?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 02:56 PM PST

    Hi all,

Background of my company: I started a 3D interior remodel rendering service. What I do is use the existing layout of the client's kitchen or bathroom and remodel it with new countertops, floors, cabinets, and more depending on what the client wants. I have access to real catalogues so people can get a more accurate visual of what their space would look like with the new materials. I also create empty/full 2D/3D floor plans.

I am wondering where I should go from here? I have created an Instagram page and a website showing the work I have done and I update it whenever I finished another render. I am just stuck on where to start advertising. I tried promoting 2 posts I made on IG, but that did not generate any leads for me, but I did get a few visitors to my website.

Anyone have any suggestions where I should start and best budget friendly place(s) to start?

Thank you for your help in advance!

What to do with current work truck?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:52 PM PST

Started a service based business at the beginning of this year. Expected to drive approx. 30,000+ miles per year and am well on track to hit that. Our current truck looks great but is too small, bought it for only $5,000 and already spent over $2,000 in repairs and likely needs a new transmission at this point. Can't decide with my business partner wether to keep this truck and pay for the transmission or upgrade to a newer vehicle. Business started dead slow but has rapidly improved month by month. Currently grossing $12,000+/mo and netting 85-90% of that.

We believe we could get at least $5,000 selling our truck as is and could use that as a downpayment on something newer, but don't know if thats the right move given how new we are. We don't think paying cash for a new truck is a good idea either as we would like to build up our reserves. Not having a payment is great but paying $2,500 (ish) for a transmission then something else breaking down would be terrible. Any advice on what you would do in this situation?

*Other details include business partner has a full time job and works in the business on the side and does not require a work vehicle. I drive the truck daily and do all of the services. He also does not rely on the business for income since he is employed elsewhere, he wants to keep his money in to help us grow. I have only recently started to take dividends from the business that will vary based on our revenue. Fixed monthly expenses total $300/mo but increase based on production. Without adding any employees in the future we should continue to net 85-90% of gross revenue every month.

Moved to unincorporated territory. No business license needed, confused.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:25 PM PST

I run a general partnership online business with no physical products, all digital. I just moved to an unincorporated town, and a county officer told me I do not need a business license or a home occupation permit, just a DBA/FBN.

Will not having a business license hurt me in the future? For example, during a recent escrow process, the mortgage lender asked for my business license. If I get another mortgage in the future, I won't have any such license to show them.

This is my first time living out of the big city, maybe I'm just overthinking things and businesses are run more simply out here.

I need to solve the perfect "box insert" for my business...

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:04 AM PST

    I need to sometimes ship a 10" x 6" x 0.10" metal plate in a 12" x 12" x 1.00" box, with other size flat products on top of the insert that are sized 11.5" x 11.5" x 0.10".

How can I modify an insert like this:

    https://www.shippingsupply.com/images/Category/medium/407_xl.jpg

So that even if lifted upside down the 10" x 6" metal won't fall in the 12" x 12" box. Other items will be flatly placed above this insert ideally.

    1) Is there a way to modify this insert so that my sheet metal remain immobile?

    2) Or could I "zip tie" the plate to the cardboard flat side (without any insert) such that is doesn't move - but this exposes zip tie bands tightly along the outside of the box - is this OK?

    Highly Automatable Businesses to Start?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:16 PM PST

I'm a software engineer with a strong data processing / web scraping / web design / API integration skillset. I was wondering if anyone knows of any businesses that could be run extremely efficiently with lots of automation.

I get the sense that there are a lot of companies out there doing things the "old-fashioned" way. Lots of employees, high overhead, limited use of automation, etc. but still have healthy profit margins because they're entrenched or in a niche market without a lot of competition.

    Tracking inventory and COGS

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:01 PM PST

As a small business retailer what is the best way to track inventory and COGS when I am buying and selling many different products at many different costs?

I am aware there are plenty of inventory management systems out there, but I am trying to avoid the high cost of these systems. How was it done before computers?

Would a system like Square keep track of all of this for me as I make sales? Would I have to manually enter every new product I get in into the Square system?

How should I deal with an employee who made mistake and tried to cover it up?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:44 PM PST

I have a virtual assistant who deals with e-commerce orders. The employee sent the wrong product to the customer that costs us $56 USD. The employee realized her mistake 3 days later. Instead of informing me or discussing it with me, she tried to cover up her mistake and sent the correct product to the customer (costing another $52 USD.) In all the customer paid $69.99 and the 2 products combine for 108$ leaving us with a $38 loss ( or 56$ if I count the loss in profit too). There is no possible way to recover the product sent.

What bothers me most is the dishonesty and deception. I only found out by chance when going through some old emails. I am not sure if this has happened before because we have 25+ orders every day and I don't check everything.

Should I forgive her and continue employing her?

And Should I deduct $56 or $38 or $0 from her salary?

I am thinking to either deduct the $38 and give here another chance OR

pretend i need to access her computer, delete all our company data from her desktop, then revoke all access and then fire her and withhold the $38 or $56 from her final pay.

I was already looking for a replacement for her over the few weeks because her productivity has decreased and her excuses have increased.

I do also dread the thought of training someone new, which will take 40 hours. So I am contemplating how to proceed.

Any advice? What would you do?

What’s the one thing that is very painful and time consuming, and should be replaced by technology.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:51 PM PST

Small businesses have challenges that are unique to the business, geography, size, and a lot of other factors.

I feel this makes it difficult to discover and generalize problems that a lot of businesses might be facing. This in turn limits the tech solutions that cater directly to your businesses problem.

Is there anything in your business that you think is extremely manual or painful or plain time consuming, and you think should be solved in a better way?

Please include in your responses a brief about your business, where it's based and how big (in terms of revenue and/or employees)

Looking for a Membership Tracking Software/Program

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:05 PM PST

Hey all! I have a flower club that has grown in the last year, and it's a $__ a month and they get 4 bouquets a month and other perks in my store.

My issue is that I've been tracking it on a spreadsheet I've made up and it's just not working.

I've tried virtual punch cards, but it issues a new punch card when they complete it which is not what I want.

Need: a program, app, software that helps me track when they pick up flowers that they can see and me.

    Thanks guys!
